00:02Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal
00:08care, and James Herriot's legacy lives on. His former trainee, Peter Wright,
00:17all my life I've enjoyed doing this, has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:23There we are. How are you doing me, old mate? Peter's old partner, Julian Norton. Not quite the same as
00:30operated in theatre, is it? I know. Now has two practices. I don't want to let him go. One of
00:36them in the town where
00:37Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved. Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:45And in the foothills of the Pennines. That's a Hollywood smile. A new generation of town and country vets.
00:53Also uphold the Herriot ethos. I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've
00:57got.
00:58The teams are united. And always determined to hit their target.
01:07Has there helped animals of all shapes? It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:12Sizes. Hello, gorgeous.
01:14Types. Catch.
01:17And temperaments. No, don't be nasty.
01:19It's definitely not glamorous.
01:22Cut that mucus out.
01:23But it's varied.
01:24So we've actually found gold. Literally found gold.
01:27It's rarely easy.
01:28You've won Mr. Wet T-shirt.
01:30But they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:33It's alive.
01:34Treating all creatures.
01:35Let's move it.
01:36I can't believe it.
01:38Great.
01:40You're all right, little bird.
01:41And small.
01:42How are we happening?
01:43Yay.
01:55Yorkshire's highways and byways take many forms.
02:00Winding country lanes between dry stone walls.
02:05Those that loyally follow the path of the river.
02:12Or rise suddenly to skies of heather.
02:17Eternal drovers' roads.
02:20Tracks dating back centuries.
02:23For descendants of the livestock that first travelled these routes.
02:28Crossings feel safe.
02:30As if this land is somehow theirs by ancient right.
02:36But for many pet owners, the dangers of the road are a constant fear.
02:42A fear that's just become reality for Michael.
02:46Who's rushed to the practice in Kirby Moorside with his 14-month-old Springer Spaniel, Brutus.
02:52The car went right over him.
02:54I thought he was brown bread.
02:55But when we looked, he'd done a runner.
02:59And he was halfway down a grass field.
03:02Which was a bit of a relief.
03:04At least he wasn't dead.
03:08I don't want to lose him.
03:11He's got a cut on one leg.
03:13He is limping a bit.
03:14He was whimpering and yelping a lot coming down in the car.
03:19Although Brutus has survived the accident for now,
03:23Michael wants Peter to make sure there are no issues that aren't visible.
03:27I'd like to come to him.
03:30Oh, dear.
03:31He's looking a bit sorry for himself.
03:32Didn't he just?
03:33He's looking to be alive, actually.
03:35I think we'll have him up, please.
03:37Right up.
03:39Goodbye.
03:40Goodbye.
03:40You're all right.
03:41Have you had a lot of marming?
03:43That's good.
03:44Nice pink colour, that, yeah.
03:46In front of him, check his chest.
03:48See if there's any bleeding into his chest.
03:51Just check your heart rate.
03:54How long ago is it since it happened?
03:57It came straight down?
03:57An hour.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Lungs are clear.
04:01And his heart rate's very steady.
04:03And his pulse is strong.
04:05He's got a gash on his front leg.
04:06Yeah.
04:07It's just how I feel down those ribs.
04:10I think he's been remarkably lucky.
04:12It's a miracle, isn't it?
04:13It is a miracle.
04:14Yeah, it is.
04:14And the other thing, of course, is the bladder.
04:17You know, is his bladder intact and this sort of thing?
04:19Yeah.
04:20There's some swelling in his abdominal muscles there.
04:23And I think it looks, it feels to me,
04:26as if the wheel has gone over this part rather than his chest.
04:29Right.
04:30I really did think he was a goner.
04:32Yeah, he's a fairly laid-back character, aren't you, Beatrice?
04:35Do you want me to leave him?
04:37Yeah.
04:37I'll give you a ring.
04:38I'm going to stay with Uncle Peter.
04:40We'll get your sonny out.
04:42You want me to come through?
04:44Good boy.
04:46Good boy.
04:48Peter knows he has to get to the bottom of things quickly.
04:51Good boy.
04:53He's a brave lad.
04:54And Nurse Chloe has come straight over to help.
04:57Good boy.
04:59Well done, Brutus.
05:01What do you want to do first?
05:02Do you want to ultrasound scan him?
05:03I'll ultrasound him first, yeah.
05:04What I'm going to do is scan his abdomen and make sure everything's as it should be in there.
05:11I'm not certain about his bladder, so that's something I need to check.
05:15Right.
05:16Let's have a look.
05:18OK, Chloe?
05:19Yeah, absolutely fine.
05:21Heart rate's nice and steady now.
05:23Good.
05:26Nice definition of intestines there.
05:30They're very clear.
05:31If you get blood in there, then they wouldn't show as clearly as that.
05:36That liver's looking pretty healthy.
05:39Nice edge to it there.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Looking quite healthy.
05:44Just going to check his bladder now.
05:49There we are.
05:51There's his bladder.
05:56A little bit of a catheter in and just check that he hasn't got blood in his bladder.
06:02It could signify that he's got kidney damage.
06:05It could mean that his blood is traumatised and bled.
06:20While Brutus ran into trouble on the road with a car,
06:25it was an off-road mountain bike accident
06:29that left Julian needing medical attention not too long ago.
06:33Look, that's my knee.
06:37And it seems he might not have learnt his lesson.
06:41Crashed into a tree yesterday.
06:43To the frustration of Nurse Lucy.
06:45I thought you were taking it easy.
06:47Well, I was, but I was going quite fast and it was nice and good conditions.
06:52Crashed into a tree.
06:52And I was going a bit too... I was going a bit too fast.
06:55It was a narrow track at the bottom with trees on either side
06:59that were encroaching on the path.
07:00And I could squeeze... I did squeeze through, but I wobbled a bit.
07:03If you have to go back to your surgeon and tell him
07:06that you've done your legging again for the same thing,
07:09he's not going to be very happy, is he?
07:11No, he won't be very happy, but he did say I was capable of doing pretty much most things.
07:16We're not crashing into trees.
07:18But there were only little trees.
07:21There were more like saplings than trees.
07:23Crashed into a bush.
07:25I went a bit mad when I got home and told I was crashing into a tree.
07:33When new life is expected on a farm, there are often bumps in the road.
07:40And the journey can be even more tense with rare breeds.
07:46In Huddersfield, Shona's had a call about a pregnant pedigree heifer.
07:52I'm going to go and see Jess with one of her white park cows.
07:55It's a first-time carver, quite an experienced farmer.
07:59She knows what she's doing, she's carved quite a few cows.
08:01So just trying to get there as quickly as possible
08:03because things aren't progressing as they normally would.
08:07She's called Tilly.
08:10I've had her since birth, so she's just coming up three.
08:14Although Tilly isn't white, she is a pedigree white park.
08:20There are only 750 breeding females in the world.
08:24So every calf is special and precious.
08:29Morning.
08:31Hello, lady.
08:33You've got Tilly.
08:34Good girl.
08:35OK.
08:36Right.
08:37She's quite slack enough, isn't she?
08:39She's very slack.
08:40And then she started pushing at about 9 o'clock last night.
08:43OK.
08:44But it didn't progress any further.
08:46OK.
08:47And now since I've been down since 6-ish, she hasn't pushed at all.
08:51Right.
08:52OK.
08:53Come on, Tilly.
08:53Good girl.
08:56So I haven't touched her at all.
09:00Whoa, whoa, whoa.
09:00Don't be kicking.
09:02Was she showing him properly like she was going to cut?
09:05She was down on her side, pushing about every five minutes.
09:11OK.
09:12And it's just not progressed from there.
09:18Good girl.
09:19So there was just a little bit of, like, a band on the cervix when I went in.
09:24But there is a little bit of room now.
09:26There's a foot there.
09:31There's a nose there.
09:32There are waters haven't broken.
09:34There's been nothing like that.
09:40Good girlie.
09:41I just have to have to feel that a good, because I can't feel what is and isn't going on
09:45here.
09:47So I'm just trying to establish whether she's in labour and it's twisted, or whether she's not actually gone into
09:53labour yet.
09:55She's been pushing, but not any really back arching tail up pushing, because that's why I've left it.
10:02But it's, you know, nine hours is too long to be pushing.
10:07The cervix isn't open now.
10:08I'm just trying to establish whether, I think there's a bit of a twist.
10:10There is a bit of a twist, actually, I think.
10:12Right.
10:13Is it alive?
10:17It's not moved yet.
10:21Coming up.
10:22Right.
10:23Has the car caused Brutus serious injury?
10:28These wounds can be absolutely lethal.
10:31The position of it does worry me.
10:32Julian doesn't know what's hit Rodney's lamb.
10:35It's in our place for an injury like that, isn't it?
10:38Yes.
10:38And a giant tortoise.
10:40The hail from the land of the Sahara.
10:42It's a bit different to Huddersfield.
10:43Gives Matt a big shock.
10:46Wow.
10:54At the practice in Kirby Moorside, Peter and Chloe are examining young Springer Spaniel, Brutus.
11:02Right.
11:03Who's been hit by a car.
11:07Oh, yes.
11:09That's exactly what we wanted, isn't it?
11:10Yeah.
11:12We've got urine there, which means his bladder's intact.
11:16Overtly, there's no evidence of blood there, so that's a major concern.
11:19We can rule out, we can tick off, so that's good.
11:23Right, I'm just going to flick the light off.
11:25We're just going to X-rays left for, because this is the one he was particularly concerned about.
11:30There you are.
11:32Good boy.
11:33That'll do us.
11:35That's the noise we wanted.
11:39That shoulder joint's looking good, so I think we've mainly just got soft tissue damage here.
11:45Certainly everything is in place, so I think Brutus has been a very lucky boy.
11:51Brutus may have been lucky so far.
11:53Right, shall we take him to him?
11:55But he's not out of the woods just yet.
11:58These wounds such as these appear quite small.
12:01They can be absolutely lethal sometimes.
12:04That could potentially cause a very nasty septic arthritis,
12:09so we're just going to flush that out now and clean it up.
12:13It looks pretty insignificant, but the position of it does worry me.
12:19I'll just put an old stitch in there.
12:22I'm going to have to move pretty quickly.
12:25Brutus is now coming round from his slumber.
12:28Good lad.
12:30Good lad.
12:33Just freshening the edges of the wound to get a nice healing process.
12:39Great.
12:40That looks better.
12:41That's better, indeed.
12:43Brutus has got away incredibly lightly.
12:46If he was a cat, you'd say he was a part of his nine lives.
12:50Good.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Right.
12:53After a traumatic day and initially fearing the worst,
12:57Michael's back with his wife Shirley.
12:59Look who's here.
13:01Look who's come for you, eh?
13:05His chest and heart are absolutely fine,
13:07and I know I've said it, but how lucky has he been?
13:11I thought I'd be digging a hole, I really did.
13:12Yes.
13:13So I want him on some antibiotics,
13:15and here's some good old painkillers.
13:17Thanks ever so much.
13:17Any problems?
13:18Give us a shout.
13:20We will.
13:20All the best.
13:22Bye-bye.
13:26In you go.
13:27Come on.
13:27In.
13:29Phenomenal relief, really.
13:30But they're good vets here, I mean, they're just spot on.
13:33Phenomenal result, yeah.
13:35And he might have learned a lesson as well.
13:45Near Huddersfield.
13:48I'm feeling the walls of the vagina.
13:51Shona's trying to establish if Jessie's pedigree heifer, Tilly, is in labour.
13:56The main thing we need to decide is whether we're going to do a cesarean or not, isn't it?
13:59Yeah.
14:00And if Tilly's unborn calf is in danger.
14:03She is quite swollen in there, like, she's quite fluid-y.
14:06Yeah.
14:07So...
14:08And she's not due till next Saturday.
14:10Yeah, and...
14:11But she is slackened off and everything, so it's weird that she was straining.
14:16That's my only issue.
14:17She's sweating.
14:21Temperature's all right.
14:22It's very slightly up, but she's a little bit stressed, isn't she?
14:25Good girlie.
14:26I can feel the end of the cervix, and that's completely shut.
14:29There's no twist.
14:30Yeah.
14:30I'm just concerned that she's been migged out down there.
14:34She was sitting most of yesterday.
14:37Yeah.
14:38Do you want to see her walking?
14:40Yeah.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Right, Tilly, come up here and show everybody how you can walk.
14:43Come on, then, we're going on a little walk.
14:45Oh, you're shuffly, aren't you?
14:49So, I definitely wouldn't do a cesarean at this point,
14:52and she's definitely not actively calving at this point.
14:56She's lifting her tail.
14:57She's definitely not far off, is she, by the looks of her?
15:00I'll tell you what I could do, actually, is rectally feel it
15:03and make sure it feels all right rectally,
15:04because when I first put my hand in and I said I could feel it's hair,
15:07I was feeling it through the vaginal walls.
15:12Oh, golly.
15:14Because her cervix isn't open,
15:16I can't feel right into where the calf is,
15:18I can't feel into the uterus.
15:20So, what I'm doing is going rectally,
15:22and then I can feel the uterus below me,
15:24and so I'm feeling if anything feels abnormal.
15:27So, there should be quite a bit of fluid around the calf,
15:29which there is.
15:31There's definitely a head there.
15:33It doesn't feel massive, so maybe there's two.
15:36Yeah, her grandmother is in the end bay over there.
15:40She had twins, so Millie and Molly were her twins,
15:44and then Millie had Tilly.
15:48Steady.
15:49There have already been some new arrivals here recently.
15:53This is Bonnie, and this is Bonnie's baby.
15:56Bonnie's baby!
15:58With Jess doing her bit for the future of this historic breed.
16:02There's only 750 breeding females in the world,
16:06and supposedly the first British breed of cattle.
16:10That is really cute.
16:12James I went hunting in Lancashire,
16:15and he shot a white park with his bow and arrow,
16:18and apparently he got fed it that night,
16:22and he enjoyed it so much, he knighted it Sir Lloyd.
16:25That's why we get the name Sir Lloyd, isn't it?
16:27Yeah.
16:28They're so pretty.
16:30Can you come?
16:32Good girl.
16:33Everything seems OK.
16:34I know that Tilly's in very good hands with Jess,
16:36so she will keep a very close eye on her.
16:39She'll let me know if anything's going on.
16:40I do think there's twins in there,
16:42so that'll be exciting to see,
16:43and hopefully they don't get too tangled up
16:45and just come out nicely one after the other.
16:47But obviously I'm here, I'm on hand,
16:49if Jess needs any help carving them.
16:52No!
17:00Across Yorkshire, Julian's been on hand
17:03for his next client for many years.
17:06Today I'm heading to see an old friend of mine,
17:11a farmer called Rodney,
17:12who's got a problem with one of his young sheep.
17:15You ready for your tea?
17:17Rodney's sheep are his pride and joy.
17:19They're all comical and they're all different characters
17:23and they're all part of the family.
17:27And it's one of the newest family members,
17:31two-month-old Anna, who's causing concern.
17:35One of her eyes just hit right.
17:38She's got like a little mark or something
17:40and she was holding her head to one side.
17:43So I thought we'd better be letting him have a look
17:46and see what he thinks.
17:49Julian, come in to look at you.
17:51Make you better.
17:52Hi, Julian.
17:53You all right?
17:54So how's this lamb then?
17:55Poorly high, do you think?
17:57Yeah.
17:57So what did it look like to start with?
18:00It just looked a bit foggy to start with.
18:02What's the other one like?
18:05Normal.
18:06This is a cataract.
18:08The white bit there, that silvery bit,
18:10is actually the lens.
18:11Yeah.
18:12So the lens obviously should be totally see-through.
18:15In this lamb, it's gone all smoky.
18:17So that'll probably be why his head was lopsided,
18:20because he was trying to...
18:21He wouldn't be able to see through it.
18:23So it's very unusual in a sheep.
18:25Sometimes see them in calves and sometimes in alpacas.
18:28I don't think I've ever seen her in a sheep before.
18:32Basically, there's nothing that we can really do about it.
18:35She'll cope.
18:36Sheep are good at bidding a flock,
18:38because they get security from the rest of the flock.
18:42So you'll find that she'll probably always want to be near other sheep
18:45when she gets older.
18:47While Julian knows Anna will be OK,
18:50a vet on a busy farm like Rodney's.
18:52So it's a bit of a way to journey, then, maybe, Rodney.
18:55I feel a bit like a...
18:56Have a took to look at in his knee.
18:59He's familiar with the phrase,
19:00while you're here.
19:02So what's wrong with this one, then?
19:04He's got a rump on his knee,
19:06so I thought you could have a look while you're here.
19:09Oh, well.
19:14Feels a bit odd, doesn't it?
19:16Yeah.
19:18Could he have been knocked by somebody, or...?
19:21Yeah, because they're always faking, like, you know what I'm doing?
19:24It's just an odd place for an injury like that, isn't it?
19:26Yes, yeah.
19:27He bends it all right.
19:29Yeah, he bends it all right.
19:33What are you going to do with that, I wonder?
19:37What do you think? It's just a knock?
19:38I don't know what that is.
19:41Hmm.
19:41Hmm.
19:49At the animal hospital in Huddersfield...
19:53In regarding which...
19:54I'm Molly.
19:55...Jake has arrived from the local zoo with Bernie to see Matt.
20:00Bernie is a sulcata tortoise.
20:02Now, these sulcata tortoises can be massive.
20:05We're concerned that Bernie has got some eggs that are being passed,
20:09and retained eggs can be really problematic.
20:13Morning, Jake, all right?
20:14All right.
20:15This is Bernie.
20:16Hi.
20:17Come on through.
20:18Let's see what we can do.
20:21Has she had eggs before, Jake?
20:23Yes.
20:23Yeah.
20:24And it's never been a problem?
20:25No.
20:25No.
20:26So, what's the story?
20:28So, usually she's annoying keepers when we're cleaning her,
20:31sort of moving about the whole enclosure,
20:32but she's sticking to one spot the whole day and not moving at all.
20:36And how long has she been doing this for?
20:39A few weeks now.
20:40Right, OK.
20:41What I'll do is I'll borrow her, get her x-rayed,
20:44see what's going on there, get her blood sample as well,
20:46check calcium levels, send them off.
20:48All right?
20:49Yep.
20:49Come on, you.
20:56So, we're 12.3kg.
21:01I think, hopefully, let's see,
21:03is the blood and x-ray machine going to be big enough?
21:04We might have to do this in two parts.
21:06Nurse Becky is helping Matt.
21:08Oh, no.
21:09She'll be all right.
21:11And while Bernie's not her first tortoise,
21:14she feels a little in the dark.
21:16I've done a couple with Matt, none this size, though,
21:19so it's a first for me.
21:21She's beautiful.
21:23The Egyptian sulcata tortoises,
21:25so they hail from the land of the Sahara.
21:27It's a bit different to Huddersfield.
21:31All right, there we go.
21:35Ready?
21:39All right, moment of truth.
21:44Wow.
21:46It's a lot of eggs.
21:47No wonder she's shuffling around like she needs to lay.
21:51We've got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
21:55Ten eggs knocking around in there.
21:58So, Bernie is pregnant with ten eggs.
22:01Oh, she's a big girl.
22:03Those eggs have clearly got a shell,
22:06and they're ready to be laid.
22:08And because she's not getting on with the job,
22:10if they were to stay in there,
22:13they can cause problems, infections.
22:15Worst-case scenario is they would have to surgically remove those eggs,
22:18which would mean sawing into that shell,
22:21which is by no means a simple undertaking.
22:27Coming up...
22:30Is the spaniel hit by a car on the road to recovery?
22:34I was quite concerned that he might have abdominal damage,
22:37that some of his body organs may have been squashed.
22:41And Julian's going off-road.
22:43We go up, up, up,
22:44and then down, down, down,
22:46and that's the best bit.
22:47For a fearsome mountain bike challenge.
22:50This says mountain biking is a dangerous activity
22:52and carries risks.
22:53Personal injury, death, etc., etc.
22:55Can I cross that bit out?
23:05In West Yorkshire,
23:07at Rodney's sheep farm...
23:09I mean, he ain't limping it out.
23:11No.
23:12After being called out to look at Anna the Lamb's cloudy eye...
23:16So, I don't think it's a joint infection
23:19or a joint swelling as such.
23:22Julian's now examining a mysterious lump
23:24on Tywin the top's knee.
23:27Instinctively, as vets,
23:29if there's something that we don't know what it is,
23:31what we like to do is stick a needle in
23:33and see what comes out of it.
23:34Go on, then.
23:36It could be an abscess.
23:38It has that feel.
23:39It's sort of slightly soft and squidgy.
23:42I think we'll do that.
23:45So, this part of the leg is the same as our wrists.
23:48So, it could have been a bang from another sheep
23:51because it's on the outside.
23:52But it could be full of pus,
23:54which is why I'm going to stick a needle in.
23:56It won't hurt this.
23:58This goes in.
23:59And then, hopefully, something comes out.
24:02Ooh, look.
24:05It's like treacle.
24:07Having just said it's probably not connected with a joint,
24:09it might be connected with a joint
24:11because that does look fluid-y.
24:14Like it could be a joint fluid,
24:16but it's quite gloopy.
24:19I think this is bursitis.
24:21So, this is a bit like
24:24a condition that people get called housemaid knee.
24:27Give her a look.
24:28I'll take it out now.
24:29So, look, I'm going to take it out.
24:31Put your foot down.
24:34So, that should have relieved the pressure quite a lot.
24:37Well, it looks different altogether, yeah.
24:39Looks like normal now, yeah.
24:40Can let him go now, if you want, actually.
24:42Um, we don't need to do anything else.
24:45So, a bursa is like a mini cushion underneath a tendon
24:48and it makes it run smoothly.
24:51And if that gets banged or knocked, it swells up
24:53and it becomes like that, swollen.
24:56Sometimes quite painful
24:57and that, now it's drained,
25:00should go a long way to stop it coming back.
25:03I've not seen a housemaid's knee in a sheep before.
25:06Good. Right.
25:07All right.
25:08We're done.
25:10A few weeks later...
25:12Now then, want some tea?
25:14..it's feeding time for Anna,
25:16whose eye problem Julian diagnosed as a cataract.
25:20Anna's doing very well.
25:21She's still sticking with her mum all the way to the sheep
25:23to show her how to go on.
25:25So, they can't adapt.
25:26It's like what else.
25:28A person that loses sight of a lie or something like that.
25:31It's life.
25:31We've just got to get on with it.
25:33And Tywin's knee is looking good.
25:36So, today, with the help of his son Matthew...
25:39Oh, boy.
25:39..Rodney needs to get Tywin's feet in good shape...
25:42Go on, big boy.
25:43..to help ensure a productive lambing season.
25:49Oh, boy.
25:51If they don't have their feet right,
25:52when it comes to tripping time,
25:53they can't do the job properly, basically,
25:56cos they can't put all the weight on the back feet.
25:59So, it's critical.
26:01Well, then, it's all right.
26:02We'll soon have done.
26:03The secret is really not taking too much off.
26:06Cos if you go too far, you can easily...
26:08..easily cut them.
26:10He's having his beauty treatment.
26:13I know he's in that he's being upside down.
26:16That's it, yeah.
26:17He's happy, I think.
26:20All right, all right, Tom.
26:22Good boy.
26:26They hate being in turn-over crate,
26:28cos they know if they're going in there,
26:29they're having something done with them,
26:29so they're quick to get back home.
26:32Bit of food and they'll follow you anyway.
26:34Come on.
26:36And with the job done...
26:37Come on, then.
26:38..Rodney can enjoy his favourite afternoon pastime.
26:42I like to watch them at front of the house.
26:44You can see what's happening and how they're growing
26:46and what they're doing.
26:49It helps you relax and all,
26:50and you can see potential in them.
26:52..and if you're feeding them right or if they need help.
27:03At the animal hospital in Huddersfield...
27:06Stop hissing!
27:07..Giant Tortoise Bernie seems to be running short on patients.
27:11She's hissing at me.
27:12I think she's a little bit irritated,
27:13but I would be if I was pregnant, so...
27:17Becky and Matt have just discovered 10 eggs stuck inside her.
27:22You've just got to be careful.
27:23I don't want to have to sedate her to get a blood sample.
27:25But if she'll let me just hold her head,
27:28push those two legs in, that might keep her head out.
27:31Very strong.
27:32That's it, all right.
27:32Can you push those two legs in?
27:34I'm trying, Matt.
27:35Don't worry if you can't.
27:36That is fine.
27:38I'll just give her a tickle.
27:39Lovely.
27:40Come on, Mrs.
27:41Try that.
27:42There we go.
27:43Oh!
27:43Perfect.
27:44Get some blood.
27:45Straight shot.
27:46Right, well done.
27:48That's just going to check on her red blood cells,
27:49white blood cells, calcium levels,
27:51because at the end of the day, she has passed eggs before,
27:53and for her to not be passing them is slightly unusual.
27:57So I want to make sure that there's no underlying condition
27:59that could be causing this,
28:00and really it should hopefully give us some answers
28:02as to why we're having trouble this time.
28:05Some hormone injections will just help get those eggs moving,
28:09and will give us some supplemental calcium as well to help.
28:12There you go.
28:13There's that calcium in there.
28:14Job's a good one.
28:16Last but not least, hormone injection.
28:18Just going to put that right into this muscle here.
28:21Well done, Bernie.
28:22Right, bubble back in the box.
28:23Lovely.
28:25All being well, those injections should help her to pass those eggs,
28:29and hopefully within the next day or so, she'll pass them.
28:34Right, Jake, so yes, she's got eggs.
28:36She's got ten, to be specific.
28:38If not, then we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it,
28:43because at the end of the day, if eggs don't get passed,
28:45then you've got no choice but to go in surgically and try and remove them,
28:48which is no mean feat in a tartice.
28:59In Kirby Moorside, Shirley has brought her young Springer Spaniel Brutus
29:04back to the practice,
29:06with Peter hoping he'll prove that little miracles can happen.
29:11My next patient is a chap I saw,
29:13and he'd just been run over by a car,
29:16and the owner saw the wheel actually go over his body,
29:19and I was quite concerned that he might have abdominal damage,
29:23that some of his body organs may have been squashed,
29:27and even though it was quite bright,
29:29then the effect of that may be apparent afterwards.
29:32Mrs McCann.
29:34Come on.
29:35So, I'm just checking up on him today to see how he's going on.
29:39Morning.
29:40Morning.
29:41Brutus.
29:42How are you?
29:44Hey?
29:45You look OK to me.
29:47Have you been all right?
29:49What have you to tell me?
29:50Is he eating OK?
29:51Yes.
29:52His abdominal muscles were quite tense last week and bruised.
29:57See, there's nothing there now.
29:59You're being nonchalant about it, aren't you, Brutus,
30:02having a sniff round while I'm examining you.
30:05Hey, let's have a look.
30:06You've been a very good boy, haven't you?
30:09Yeah, that's he was nicely, hasn't it?
30:12Well, I can't find anything wrong with him,
30:15and he's been a very lucky boy.
30:19Well, be it yourself, Brutus,
30:21and keep away from those nasty cars, won't you?
30:23We're doing our best.
30:25Thank you very much.
30:26Well, it's a pleasure, an absolute pleasure.
30:28Bye-bye.
30:29Thank you, Brutus, thank you for coming to see me.
30:31He's gone.
30:32It was off.
30:35I'm so pleased that he's recovered to such an extent,
30:40I would say he's back to normal.
30:41So I hope when Brutus is out in traffic again,
30:45he does consider what needs to be done.
30:48In other words, look right, left, and right again
30:51before proceeding,
30:52and then Brutus will live happily ever after.
30:58With Brutus back out enjoying exercise,
31:01well away from busy roads,
31:05Shirley's husband, Michael, still can't believe their luck.
31:09Brutus, go.
31:10Go.
31:11It was devastating to see him run over.
31:13I was only maybe 10 metres away.
31:16I mean, just unbelievable.
31:19I mean, he thinks everything is his friend,
31:22but he's obviously learning now.
31:23He's, what, 18 months old.
31:25So he's learnt a lesson.
31:27Brutus.
31:29He's my shadow now, whatever I'm doing.
31:34Oh, Brutus, how much do we love you, boy?
31:44The Yorkshire Dales is the perfect spot
31:47to enjoy a peaceful break.
31:50But undeterred by his recent biking accidents,
31:54Julian's come for a not-so-relaxing weekend.
31:57I've just arrived at the campsite in Swaledale.
32:01I'm very excited,
32:02because tomorrow I'll be doing mountain bike racing
32:05in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire.
32:07The closer I've got to the campsite,
32:09the more and more excited I've been getting.
32:12A trip away like this,
32:14the examiner really starts
32:15when I press my pop-up roof button
32:16and the roof goes up,
32:18and that's when I know
32:19that I'm really in full camping mode.
32:23So that is where we're all going to be tomorrow.
32:26We go up, up, up,
32:27and then down, down, down,
32:29and that's the best bit,
32:30and then we're happy.
32:34Burgers it is today for tea.
32:38Oh, yum, look at that.
32:41Mmm.
32:42I just know how much fun that's going to be tomorrow
32:44when I'm whizzing down at high speed and doing jumps.
32:47I'm just totally excited about it.
32:55It's going to be a long day in the saddle
32:57and I need to get my beauty sleep, I think, tonight,
33:00so I'm going to turn in early.
33:10The Ard Rock Festival
33:12Remember, no bikes allowed in the registration tent.
33:14is the UK's biggest mountain bike event,
33:17with thousands of riders competing
33:19across the intimidating slopes of Swaledale.
33:24This is the registration process
33:26and this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity
33:28and carries risks,
33:30personal injury, death, etc, etc,
33:31so I've signed that,
33:33so can I cross that bit out?
33:36Although he likes to seem relaxed,
33:39Julian's more aware of the risks than ever
33:41after his serious knee injury.
33:45I'm slightly nervous.
33:47Mountain biking at this level
33:49is always quite dangerous.
33:50There's challenges ahead, for sure.
33:53T-minus one minute for the first riders.
33:56Julian's competing in the over-50s veterans group,
34:00aptly known as the Grand Vet category.
34:02Seven stages, 40 kilometres of glorious
34:06Yorkshire Dalles countryside await you.
34:09This is when the adrenaline starts to flow.
34:13OK, so, ladies and gentlemen, good luck.
34:15You may go. Enjoy.
34:22This course is right up in the high parts of Swaleale.
34:26It's pretty rocky,
34:26so try not to fall off.
34:28That would be my main challenge.
34:32Still to come...
34:34Hello, Shona.
34:35She finally does it?
34:36...fresh concerns over a rare breed calf.
34:39I don't know whether you want to check the calf
34:41because she's bitten the navel off right at the top.
34:44Let's have a look at your navel, then.
34:46And during Julian's epic bike challenge,
34:49a frightening déjà vu.
34:53You OK?
35:02Near Huddersfield...
35:03Lyric, what are you up to?
35:04Jess recently called Shona
35:06when she mistakenly thought her rare breed Heffertilly
35:10was in labour.
35:11I was very concerned.
35:13The white parks are...
35:14They're actually rarer than pandas,
35:16and her line has a reputation for twins,
35:19so I thought because of the twins,
35:21they may be tangled up together
35:22or the calf might be dead.
35:26But thankfully...
35:28Oops, Debbie.
35:29..one healthy little girl has been born.
35:31I'm very pleased that she came out quickly,
35:34that she was a heifer,
35:36and actually pleased that she was a single calf.
35:39So I'm pleased that we can continue that genetic line.
35:43But Jess still has some concerns,
35:45so she's asked Shona to come back.
35:50What I'd wanted Shona to do is,
35:52because she thought that she'd felt this sort of second head
35:55or some lump behind the calf,
35:58just to make sure that there isn't a dead calf inside her,
36:01and to make sure that she's returning to normal,
36:04and she's healthy.
36:05Good morning, Jess.
36:07Hello, Shona.
36:08Has she finally done it?
36:10You'll be pleased to see.
36:11Oh, look at that.
36:13She's a heifer.
36:14Oh, fantastic.
36:16And she was done in 15 minutes,
36:17because she came so quickly,
36:19I thought, oh, there might be another one coming.
36:21But then she just settled down.
36:23Good girlie.
36:24Good tillie.
36:26Third last tillie.
36:29Yeah, that's fine.
36:30Cervix is closing nicely.
36:32Yeah.
36:33So I was definitely wrong about the second calf,
36:35but that's a good thing.
36:36But I don't know whether you want to check the calf,
36:39because she's bitten the navel off right at the top.
36:42Let's have a look at your navel, then.
36:45You can feel the calf coming through.
36:47Can't feel any hernias or anything that's a problem.
36:51Cord's intact.
36:52She's just bitten it off nice and neat, hasn't she, your mum?
36:55Haven't she?
36:56I do like these calves.
36:59They're so pretty with their eyeliner.
37:03So have you thought of a name yet?
37:05Well, Tilly was named after Matilda, the naughty schoolgirl,
37:10because she was the naughtiest little calf I knew, weren't you?
37:14Wasn't the nice teacher called Miss Honey?
37:17Oh!
37:17Honey's quite nice.
37:18Yeah, yeah, honey.
37:20Do you want to be called Honey?
37:21It's called the Matilda theme.
37:22She just looked at you then when you asked her.
37:26I'm really pleased.
37:28Every calf is important,
37:29and every heifer calf is extra important.
37:34It's really good to see another heifer calf in the breed,
37:36and hopefully, in a couple of years' time,
37:38Honey will be getting on with having some calves of her own as well
37:41and carrying on the breed.
37:50A few miles away,
37:52Mat's come to the zoo after treating Bernie the giant tortoise,
37:56who had ten eggs stuck inside her.
38:01You all right, Jake?
38:03You all right, Matt?
38:03How's things?
38:04How are you?
38:05Not too bad, not too bad.
38:06How are we doing?
38:07She's passed all her eggs.
38:09Ah, fantastic.
38:09She actually did it on the way home in the drive from the vets.
38:13Back of my car, she ended up laying the last one.
38:15Excellent!
38:16But we've been putting her in the field
38:18to sort of give her a bit of TLC,
38:20a bit more grass to build her back up.
38:21And she's thriving.
38:25She's trying to escape,
38:27trying to get the weeds on the outside of the enclosure,
38:29but she's eating the grass, as we speak.
38:32Oh, brilliant.
38:33Let's go say hello.
38:36It's like she recognises me.
38:38Relax.
38:39Hey, it's all right.
38:42She recognises me straight off the bat.
38:44She took to self-righting.
38:45Hey, it's all right.
38:47Don't look so concerned.
38:49Hey?
38:50Ah, she looks well.
38:51She looks really bright in the eyes, doesn't she?
38:53She looks happy.
38:54Are you enjoying yourself?
38:56That's what we like to see.
38:59The improvement's almost instantly.
39:01She's a lot happier.
39:02She moves about a lot more.
39:03She's just like all burning up.
39:05Fantastic.
39:07Looks like she's off.
39:08She's had enough of us, Jake.
39:09I don't blame her.
39:10No.
39:11No.
39:13No.
39:22Back in peaceful Swaledale, Julian's competing in one of the UK's toughest mountain bike events,
39:31not long after suffering a serious injury when he came off his bike.
39:39This event is basically a continuous ride.
39:42There's no stopping.
39:43There's no waiting.
39:43It's just a whole day of non-stop riding.
39:47But riding in tandem, he does have some support.
39:53So I'm doing this with my friend James.
39:56We go riding every Tuesday.
39:58This has gone all right, isn't it, James?
39:59Yes, excellent.
40:00So I've done one of the stages out of seven.
40:03And you think it's going to be easy because it's downhill, but your legs are stinging by the time you
40:09get to the bottom.
40:16Every Yorkshire vet needs to take time to relax.
40:20Julian's relaxation is just more high octane than most.
40:25This is exactly my idea of a perfect day.
40:28When I'm not at work, this is where I like to be.
40:30You're not thinking about any stresses or pressures or anything like that.
40:33You're just concentrating on going as fast as you can and not falling off.
40:43You OK?
40:48Yeah.
40:58It's not far until the pit stop, where Julian can assess the damage and refuel.
41:04Can we help us out?
41:05Yeah, yeah.
41:05Just take as many as you want.
41:08Quite hard.
41:10Pull off and hold my elbow.
41:11It's not too bad.
41:12It's just a flesh wound.
41:14His bike's chain has been coming off.
41:17It's been jumping for a while, hasn't it?
41:19Yeah.
41:20But while he's an expert at fixing animals, for this, he needs mechanic Amelia.
41:25If you actually look really closely, it says off.
41:30Yeah.
41:31You ride a bike, right?
41:32Yeah, exactly.
41:33You have a different job.
41:34Exactly.
41:35That's always the way that I've been.
41:38It's a major school where I've been driving with my clutch off, apparently.

42:13to reach the finish line.
42:21That was absolutely, as the name suggests, totally epic.
42:25Super day.
42:26And they're all again.

42:33in his appropriately named veterans category.
42:36You're second in the Grand Vets, then.
42:38Hey-hey!
42:40The second in the Grand Vets category.
42:43That puts a smile on my face.
42:48The mountain biking community is like, you know,
42:51that everybody's so friendly.

42:54There's a bit of competition.
42:55And it's just a really, really good, fun environment.
43:00It's really tough to be in action, that's for sure.
43:03So I think that's our next stop.
43:31Well, here's the road.
43:31That's what we're going to do.
43:31We are going to do this.
43:31We're going to do this.
43:32We're going to do it.
43:34We're going to do it.
