00:00Right now, I'm sitting at our rehearsal studios and we're rehearsing to go back on tour again with all this
00:05new music.
00:06I wanted to make songs that I could just have fun playing with my band on stage.
00:10My new album, Cruel World, is a project that I've been working on for the past year and a half.
00:15I feel like I've learned so much about myself through the process of writing it.
00:19The album is about my experience of being a girl in your 20s and about redefining home and loving, losing
00:28and experiencing everything that there is to experience as a human being.
00:32I first got inspiration for this album after coming off tour in September 2024.
00:38Figure out who I am as a person, let alone an artist, to be able to tell these stories.
00:42I also was moving out of my childhood home during the process, rediscovering so much of who I used to
00:49be, also kind of defined the album and gave me a chance to reflect.
00:53I always think about fashion when crafting a musical era.
00:57I've been drawing quite a lot of inspiration from references that I used to love as a kid, like old
01:02movies that I used to watch.
01:04And I love kind of old, like Victorian corsetry and fabrics and lace and things like that at the moment.
01:12So I'm trying to kind of encapsulate this fairy tale kind of gothic fantasy world.
01:17And I feel like there's no better way to do that through the clothes I'm wearing.
01:21The first people that I share a song or an idea with is, of course, my sisters.
01:25Luckily, I live with two of them and I can just come home after a session and play it to
01:30them.
01:30They're the best kind of judge of whether something is good or whether it's just kind of rubbish because they
01:35kind of just tell me straight, which is always really good.
01:38The funniest part for me is looking back through all of the old lyrics that just were obviously not right
01:45and see kind of what the song was going to turn out like.
01:48You don't have to kind of be creative all the time.
01:50In fact, you can't really force it and you kind of just have to wait for some idea to kind
01:55of fall out the sky.
01:56I find that songwriting, like many things in life, is kind of just chaos.
02:00And it's about showing up to the studio every day, even though most days you'll come home empty-handed.
02:06It'll be worth it when you do get that song that you really, really love.
02:09You're welcome.
