00:00You can have Paul Blackburn back.
00:01You can take him back.
00:03We don't need him.
00:04It's funny, and Yankee fans who stayed up late last night, I feel for you.
00:08Because I think when you stay up past midnight watching a baseball game,
00:11you've invested time and you've invested giving up sleep.
00:15So the one thing you don't want to do is have your manager basically tell you,
00:20hey, today's game is not a big deal.
00:22That's what it felt like, too.
00:24Aaron Boone did what Carlos Mendoza did a day earlier.
00:27You know, Mets fans were angry on Monday for a few reasons,
00:30and one of which was Dickie Lovelady.
00:32Where's Devin Williams?
00:33Where's Brooks Raley?
00:34Well, Mendy did that so that Monday those guys would be available.
00:38And it worked out, right?
00:40The Mets win that game last night against the Cardinals partially,
00:43I have to admit this, partially because Mendy took Sunday's game and said,
00:49you know what, I'm not going to go balls to the wall.
00:52Right, I'm not throwing Devin Williams.
00:53Correct.
00:54Now, last night in the Yankee game, Aaron Boone made a few similar decisions.
00:59Like, Fernando Cruz got two big outs in the fifth inning.
01:02He didn't come back out for the sixth.
01:04Camillo Duvall, who looks brilliant, comes in, gets a huge out to end the seventh,
01:09doesn't come back out for the eighth.
01:10Aaron Boone even says after the game,
01:12I don't want to give him a second up this early in the season.
01:15And then finally, Paul Blackburn, who is what he is,
01:18I mean, he's one of the last guys in your bullpen,
01:19he comes out after a scoreless eighth to pitch the ninth.
01:23And so what Aaron Boone did is exactly what Mendy did the day before,
01:27and I get why it's frustrating in the moment,
01:29but when you've got yourself a very long season,
01:32It's a long-ass season.
01:34You're not wrong, Aaron.
01:35You're going to make decisions for the next day.
01:37And that sucks when it's 12, 15 in the morning,
01:40and you've given up sleep.
01:42But what we have to do as Mets and Yankee fans is understand it.
01:46It's almost, he conceded it.
01:48And when you realize it was conceded,
01:50you couldn't get mad about it.
01:52Like, you could,
01:52but you're talking about game four of the 162.
01:57You know when you shouldn't get mad at it?
01:58Let's say it works out the way it did for the Mets.
02:01Again, the Mets had an available Devin Williams.
02:04He was great.
02:05They had an available Brooks Rally.
02:07He was great.
02:08But that's why you're not mad at it for the Mets.
02:11Give it away game three of the Pirates series,
02:14so that this first game of the St. Louis series,
02:16you're set, you win it.
02:18Hey, we're on our way to winning another series.
02:20The only reason that guys like Sean are going to get upset
02:24has been on what happens today.
02:26Like in game two,
02:28what happens today is going to matter.
02:30For some reason, the Yankees,
02:32for whatever reason, who knows,
02:33they have a bad adding by,
02:34it's Freed on the mound, right?
02:35Yes.
02:35You get a bad adding by Freed,
02:37you end up getting smashed around out on the West Coast,
02:39and all of a sudden, you've lost this series,
02:42and you gave away game one.
02:43That's when you get frustrated by it
02:45because of what we talked about yesterday.
02:47When it comes down to ultimately at the end of the season,
02:49a tiebreaker, this series is going to matter.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Because the Mariners are going to be good.
02:53You know the Yankees are going to be good.
02:55Could you really afford to give away game one?
02:57Why not win game one
02:58and then worry about two and three later?
03:01I really believe circumstances as baseball fans
03:03impact our moods and behaviors
03:06and feelings towards managers.
03:07If you're sitting in 45-degree weather at Citi Field,
03:11you're angry.
03:12If you're sitting there in your own drool at 1215
03:15and you're not used to staying up that late
03:17and you're investing time
03:19and Paul Blackburn's out there
03:21giving up a walk-off hit to the big dumper,
03:23you get mad.
