00:03Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the Luster.
00:08This giant cephalopod-like sea creature, half octopus, half shark, is, many believe,
00:15stuff of fantasy, the kind of fictional monster Jules Verne might dream up.
00:21But then, there are those more open-minded souls, like myself, who believe this gigantic
00:27cryptid to be as real as you or I.
00:30I will present to you the evidence I have collated, proving this animal is no mere figment of the imagination.
00:35And it all begins with the first sighting, off the coast of St. Marie in 1823, by this man,
00:44a pirate by the name of Pierre Lafitte.
00:54Yeah, Lafitte was my great-great-great-grandfather.
00:57I tell you no lies.
00:59Still got the journey he had when he was pirating away.
01:02Passed on from generation to generation.
01:04And that's why this is the only boat trip where you can experience the exact place my ancestor witnessed.
01:12The Luska.
01:14Roll up, roll up!
01:16You know you want to.
01:17And I promise you guys, you will not be disappointed.
01:22So how was it?
01:24Are you a believer now?
01:26To be honest, I think I'm even less of a believer than I was before.
01:31I don't know why you bothered.
01:33Because I want to be prepared.
01:36I'm afraid nothing can prepare you for my ex-husband.
01:43Hello.
01:44Either that's him, or we've come to a soup kitchen by mistake.
01:52Hello, Charles.
01:53Cara.
01:54It's been a while, hasn't it?
01:56Oh.
01:59Stop it.
02:05This is Rory.
02:08Ah, yes.
02:09Didn't realise you were bringing him.
02:11Nice to meet you, Rory.
02:13It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
02:15Can't wait to hear all your stories about the Luska.
02:17Absolutely fascinated about it.
02:19Ah.
02:21Would you like a glass of wine?
02:23Just a cup of coffee will do, Rita.
02:26Let me see if I can find a waiter.
02:29Sit down.
02:35So how are you?
02:37I mean, you know, the...
02:39the anniversary.
02:41Feels strange to be back.
02:44Looks like it was only yesterday.
02:47I'm taking the boat out later, to...
02:49to where it happened.
02:50Fancy joining.
02:51You remember him together?
02:52No, I'd rather stay here.
02:54With Rory.
03:05I...
03:13Poor guy.
03:23You all right, Milano?
03:26You all right, Milano?
03:26You all right, Milano?
03:49It's just a bad dream.
03:58How have you been?
04:00Just went for a walk, that's all.
04:04Thanks.
04:30Good morning, sir. You good?
04:33No, I am not good.
04:35What's wrong?
04:37Turns out, I'm an uncle.
04:39Yes, mom.
04:40Yes, sir, I'm not starting.
04:41But I came to visit Uncle Merv anyway.
04:45That's Eloise, the niece I didn't know I had.
04:47So you're her uncle Merv.
04:50No, I'm not.
04:51I mean, yes, I am her uncle, but not Merv.
04:53Never Merv, understood?
04:55Okay, clearly touched a nerve there.
05:00So she's Solomon's daughter?
05:02I don't know why he couldn't just tell me that in the first place.
05:04He could have just said, well, as it happens, I do have a daughter.
05:07Are he and her mother together?
05:09Yeah, not for some time, apparently.
05:10She's supposed to be staying with her Auntie Vondra.
05:12Well, she doesn't like it there, so she ran away and came here.
05:16They've got a case, I assume?
05:18Oh, my God.
05:19It's not a murder case, is it?
05:22Please let me come on a ride along, Uncle Merv.
05:24Please.
05:25Right.
05:26So firstly, you're not coming on any ride along.
05:29And secondly, it's not Uncle Merv.
05:31It's Merv in.
05:33Remember?
05:34Hi.
05:35I'm Naomi, by the way.
05:37I work with your Uncle Merv.
05:41Right.
05:42Go pack your stuff, young lady.
05:43You've got a boat to catch.
05:45I'm sending you back home to Antigua.
05:47Whatever you say, Uncle Merv.
05:49And it's not...
05:52I like her.
05:58Victim's name's Giles Parry, 58 years of age.
06:01Body was found floating six miles out at sea.
06:04Sergeant Fletchers with the postcard now.
06:05A couple of fishermen going out early this morning came across the body.
06:09But paramedics reckon he'd been in the water since last night.
06:14Thing is, this is already causing a stir on the heart.
06:17Why is that?
06:18Because of those marks on his body.
06:22They're all over his front and his back.
06:24And the bruising here.
06:26Some people are saying it was caused by the Luska, and that's what killed him.
06:31Sorry, what?
06:32It's a sea monster.
06:33A sea monster?
06:34Like a local legend kind of thing.
06:37Half shark, half octopus wraps its tentacles around you and drags you under.
06:41Hence...
06:42A sea monster?
06:43Not everybody believes in this thing.
06:45Most people don't, but...
06:47Do you?
06:48No, but it's still part of our history.
06:51Part of our culture.
06:52Right.
06:53Well, we can knock that theory on the head as a possible cause of death, alright?
06:56Except there's a little more to it than that, sir.
06:59That's why he's here.
07:07I've always wondered whether this will come back to haunt me.
07:11Seven years ago yesterday, Giles Parry's 16-year-old son, Benjamin, drowned that seal.
07:19In the exact same location as Giles' body was found this morning.
07:25A local fisherman told me that Mr. Parry had sailed out to that swamp yesterday to pay his respects.
07:34Then he ended up dead himself.
07:38Was he stormy yesterday?
07:40Called the harbour master.
07:42It was come for the last 24 hours.
07:44Do we know what time he left the harbour?
07:46Just before seven o'clock, according to the GPS.
07:49Also, there's a boat mechanic who's been fixing Mr. Parry's engine.
07:53He saw him leave.
07:54He says there was definitely nobody else on the boat with him.
07:57It's arrived at the final destination.
07:59Half an hour later, radar shows no other boat near it at any point.
08:03So, what happened to him?
08:05How did he end up dead with all those weird markings on him?
08:09Unless, you know, it was the lost girl.
08:14I hate to break it to you Officer Rose, but sea monsters don't exist?
08:17No, yeah, I know.
08:19But, it'd be cool if they did do alright.
08:23What's that?
08:32Sir.
08:32Sir, will it?
08:33Our victim wasn't shot, right?
08:36No.
08:37There's no gun found on the boat.
08:39Not that I've found so far.
08:45So, what is that doing here?
08:55I don't know what happened on that boat
08:57but the fact that we found this on it
08:59means it's suspicious
09:01I think someone else was there, you know
09:08I'm going to talk to Catherine
09:10and what I know
09:11John Sparrow was an isolated figure
09:14but he did drink at her bar
09:16and he would talk to her
09:18I'm also going to contact the Guadalupe police
09:21and request the Benjamin Parry case files
09:24So the search back then wasn't led by the St. Marie team?
09:28As it was, the Guadalupe Coast Guard
09:30who was first contacted when the empty boat was discovered
09:33they stayed there
09:35I bet that ran cool
09:38I did push for us to have a role
09:40but the senior investigating officer
09:43wasn't interested
09:48there's some people on St. Marie
09:51who think I should have pressed harder
09:53especially when they ran into a dead end
09:56early on
09:58it's always been felt
10:00more could have been done
10:02or by me
10:08considering I am already
10:11persona non grata
10:12I would like to do my bit
10:14to try and solve this case now
10:17and win back the community's trust
10:20I've located the victim's ex-wife
10:22she and her partner
10:24are staying at a hotel
10:25just outside Tom
10:34we arrived here two days ago
10:36to mark the anniversary of Kara's son's passing
10:39and I'm sorry to ask
10:41Ms. Smart
10:42but your son Benjamin
10:43why did he take the boat out on his own?
10:47Giles had always been into UFOs and aliens
10:51that kind of thing
10:52our holidays were spent visiting Loch Ness
10:55or the Bermuda Triangle
10:57the Losca
10:58here on St. Marie
10:59Ben was getting even more fanatical than he stood
11:02that's why he snuck out on his own
11:04and he took the boat we'd hired out
11:06for a last ditch sighting of the Losca
11:10the weather turned bad
11:11the sea was rough
11:13he never came back
11:19I kept hoping they'd find him alive
11:22with a life jacket on
11:23just floating somewhere
11:24this time passed
11:25you have to accept
11:27that he's not coming back
11:30so you returned Tom to England?
11:33after 10 months
11:34Giles and I were arguing non-stop by then
11:36I just needed some space
11:39some time to process it all
11:41whereas he
11:46Giles was convinced
11:47the Losca took their son
11:49he became obsessed
11:51that's why he stayed on here
11:52when I left
11:53to try and prove the Losca exists
11:56and he really
11:58truly believed in it
12:02and yesterday
12:03did you see Giles at all?
12:05we had an early dinner at 5
12:07it's great to finally meet you Giles
12:10and how was that?
12:11how was Giles then?
12:12it was fine
12:13you know
12:14quiet
12:15Giles was
12:16Giles
12:17still as delusional as he ever was
12:19did Giles ever own a gun
12:21that's all
12:22not why we were together
12:23and I struggled to leave
12:25he bought one
12:26while he was out here
12:27what exactly happened to Giles?
12:29you said that he was found dead at sea
12:31I assumed it was an accident
12:33but
12:33is there more to it than that?
12:36well
12:36we're not sure
12:37yet
12:38we're still working on that one
12:48yeah my friend's dad swears
12:50he saw the Losca one time
12:51okay
12:52come on
12:53there's nobody to see him afterwards
12:57keep our focus on the keys
13:24what's your wonderer?
13:25I mean
13:26Vondra
13:32Vondra, Vondra, it's all right. She's back at my place. She's safe. Thanks. Okay, look, I'll call you back in
13:37a bit
13:41Hey uncle Moe, hope you're hungry. I ordered lots
13:45Which reminds me I borrowed the credit card this morning needed it to pay for the board to get back
13:50to St. Marie and dinner
13:52You really are your father's daughter, aren't you? I know right?
13:56What's going on, Eloise? Why are you back here?
14:00Because we need to talk about dad. We could have done that this morning
14:05Why didn't you mention it then? I was waiting for the right moment and before I know it you're shoving
14:10me on a boat back home
14:13All right
14:15What about you then?
14:17We need to work out a plan uncle Merv. A plan for what? To get him out of prison
14:22To find evidence that proves he's innocent
14:26Okay, um
14:27What exactly did your dad tell you about him being arrested?
14:31Just that he was set up
14:32And shouldn't be in jail
14:34That it's a miscarriage
14:37A miscarriage of justice
14:40So you need to help him, right?
14:46Why don't you go and get some plates and cutlery, yeah?
14:49Why don't you go and get some plates and cutlery, yeah?
14:55So, you idiots
15:16Solomon clearly hasn't told her about the scam he got caught up in
15:19That he has gotta shot someone
15:22And held me hostage
15:25He's dressed it up like he was the victim
15:28And she obviously idolizes him
15:30What are you going to do?
15:32I should just tell her the truth, right?
15:35Just...
15:37Tell her in a nice way
15:38Not in a...
15:41Your kind of way
15:43What is a my kind of way?
15:44You know, sometimes you can be a...
15:47Tiny bit insensitive
15:50Insensitive?
15:52Me insensitive?
15:53That is rubbish
15:54I mean, if anything, it's everyone else who is too sensitive
15:58Sure
15:59That's totally what it is
16:04Hey, Louise
16:08Right, um...
16:09I'm off to work now
16:10So we can have dinner later, yeah?
16:13And we'll, um...
16:16We'll talk
16:16Okay, Uncle Mark
16:21Old school
16:22I like it
16:28Right
16:29Where we at with the case?
16:30Anything from the lab yet?
16:33Postmortems estimating time of death between 7.30 and 8pm
16:37So...
16:39The victim leaves the harbour at 7
16:41Dies between 7.30 and 8
16:43Out at sea
16:44Just after he drops anchor
16:47And cause of death
16:48Was internal bleeding
16:49Due to a ruptured spleen
16:51Which, in theory
16:53Could have been caused by something
16:55Gripping him tightly
16:57Like...
16:58The tentacles of the Lusk
17:01Or...
17:01More likely...
17:03Something else
17:05Same with the red markings
17:06Kinda like friction burns
17:08But...
17:09There's nothing at the scene to suggest
17:10What might have caused it
17:13What about the search of the victim's house?
17:15Uh...
17:15Mati and Seb are just starting
17:31What?
17:32Sarge!
17:32You have to see this
17:34Ten-year-old Seb will be losing his mind right now
17:38Like sea monster central in here
17:44This is gonna be the best search ever
17:46Alright, so rules
17:47You start on the computer
17:49I'll hit the cabinets
17:50Alright, cool
17:57You alright Sarge?
17:59Yeah, it's just my old boss from Jamaica
18:01I'll call him once we're done with this
18:13So what do we know about our victim?
18:15Giles Parry worked as a paramedic back in the UK
18:18Until he moved out here seven years ago
18:21Spent all his savings buying a boat
18:23And earned a small income
18:24Giving talks about the legend of the Luska
18:27What about these two?
18:28Any sniff of a motive yet?
18:29We're still waiting on Mr. Lyons' background and financial checks
18:33But he and Cara have been together just over a year
18:36Met on a dating app
18:37Now, as he only met the victim for the first time yesterday
18:40I'm struggling to find a reason for him wanting Mr. Parry dead
18:44But, she's a different story
18:46Miss Smart previously worked as a teacher
18:48Before giving that up to write a book a few years ago
18:51A memoir about losing her son
18:54I skim read it
18:55And she's very honest about how hurt and angry she felt
18:59About Giles' behaviour
19:01When I needed my husband's love the most
19:03He disappeared down the rabbit hole of fantasy
19:06Casting me aside for his futile belief in a mythical beast
19:10I mean, the guy had gone full on Looney Tunes, didn't he?
19:13What was that you said earlier about not being insensitive?
19:18Look, I'm not-
19:18Where it gets interesting
19:19Is the book's no longer bringing in any money
19:22She's basically broke
19:23I spoke to her literary agent in the UK
19:26And apparently, a US TV production company
19:29Has offered to make a documentary about her and Giles' son going missing
19:33It's worth a quarter of a million dollars
19:36Oh, I'm sensing a but
19:38It going ahead was dependent on Mr. Parry agreeing to appear in the documentary too
19:45Don't tell me, he didn't want to
19:54So we spoke to the staff here
19:55Well, that dinner you had with Giles
19:57It wasn't as sedate as you said it was
20:00According to them, you got quite worked up, Ms. Smart
20:03Angry that your ex-husband was refusing to agree to the documentary
20:07Well, that's an exaggeration if ever I heard one
20:10No, it's not, it's the truth
20:11Giles, please, I need this
20:13Why are you being so stubborn?
20:14Because I know what they'll do
20:16Make me have to look like some mad conspiracy theorist
20:18I hate you Giles
20:20So much
20:23I didn't just lose a son seven years ago
20:26I lost my husband as well
20:27He never once thought of me
20:30That maybe he needed to be there for me
20:33And even now, years later, I ask for his help
20:36Because, yes, I need the money
20:38I thought at least he owed me that one favour
20:41But, but...
20:41No, not even that
20:43Thing is, Ms. Smart, we checked with the production company
20:46And that documentary's officially got the go-ahead
20:48So now, with Giles dying in suspicious circumstances
20:51And he's...
