Bobby Wagner was productive last year but his age is a massive question heading into 2026. Will Washington bring him back?
Transcript
00:00I am of the mindset that Wagner will not be back.
00:04Are you of the same mindset?
00:05No.
00:05I don't know.
00:06You're on I Don't Know camp?
00:08Yeah, I'm on I Don't Know camp.
00:10What about the boys in the aquarium?
00:12Stallion wanted us to take calls on this.
00:13I don't think many folks out there think he's coming back.
00:18Jeffrey, what do you think with Bobby?
00:20You think he's coming back?
00:22I don't know either, JP, because they can go either way.
00:26When they said that he was a free agent, because I had seen it across the internet and stuff,
00:31I was wondering, I was like, are they waiting until after the draft to figure out what they're going to
00:37do with Bobby?
00:38Or is he going anywhere else?
00:39So I'm really confused.
00:42I don't know at all.
00:43Yeah.
00:45My thing is, to be honest with you, we normally have these questions and we get into these worries about
00:53if somebody's going to be back or not.
00:55Like, I lean on my big bro, Doc, on this one.
00:59Like, we were, what, 5-12 last year, bro?
01:02Yeah.
01:02Okay.
01:03I'm not saying.
01:04I mean, like, if it happens, if he comes back, I think Bobby can help you.
01:09If it doesn't, it's not like it's the end of the world.
01:13Well, and they have drafted his position.
01:15I know Medrano got basically no run last year, but that doesn't necessarily mean that should have been the case,
01:22right?
01:22Like, maybe he wasn't good enough to get on the field, but maybe a year of learning, you can get
01:29that speed on the field.
01:30They talked about younger, faster, stronger.
01:32Medrano is faster.
01:34Yeah.
01:35He's nothing else.
01:36I mean, the questions on him coming out of the draft were tackling ability, and I think that is still
01:42a question until we see it on the field.
01:46But Kehoe had a really good camp.
01:49Yeah, he did.
01:50And then I think, if I remember correctly, I think he was dealing with concussion issues.
01:53But if you're just looking at the depth of the linebacker position, I think by adding Chennault and then expecting
02:01a lot more from McGee,
02:06and then you still have Lou Vu, who's obviously a really important part of this, you know what I mean?
02:10Like, I just think it doesn't – it wouldn't make a lot of sense.
02:16That's not to suggest that Bobby can't help you in the locker room, on the field still.
02:20I think there's a lot of situations where Bobby helps you.
02:23I don't think he should be a 99% snap player, but I think the anger or malice towards Bobby
02:32that was coming from the fan base last year was pretty misguided.
02:35I think the coverage stuff was a problem, but you also got to wonder who's putting him in those situations.
02:43But I don't know.
02:44It seems telling to me that they're trying to move forward in other directions, I would say.
02:51Okay, and we'll kind of just see how that goes.
02:54Yeah, I mean, but they have to improve the team.
02:56Right.
02:57They have to improve positions.
02:58They got to make each – they have to elevate the athletic system and the play and the speed and
03:04lower the age in every position.
03:08That's what they're trying to do.
03:10Agreed, dude.
03:10I don't think it just completely washes them out.
03:13But, you know, and if it does, like I've always felt when a person – when you move on and
03:19you bring in other people,
03:21you are probably improving your team for more of just a year but the long haul.
03:26Because for me, as much as people like to go crazy over, like, what's happening this year,
03:32I'm thinking about what's going to happen this year and two, three years down the line.
03:36I like to look at the different people to see how all that stuff starts to come together.
03:41I don't want to see success one year.
03:43I want to see success be extended.
03:48That's – I mean, over the years, right, that's kind of what we've seen is they would have these flashes
03:542012,
03:562015, 2020, if you can call the 7-9 COVID season a success.
04:00But it was kind of fun late in the year when they got hot and won a bunch of games
04:04and got in the playoffs
04:04and Heineke was diving for pylons and stuff.
04:07Yeah, but if I could see the playoffs every year, I'd be much happier.
04:10Well, B, I think that leads to the biggest question.
04:14As 2024 was unfolding, we were like, oh, my gosh, they've found this quarterback.
04:19They've turned this thing around.
04:20This is a long haul, successful path they're on.
04:27And then 2025 is a disaster.
04:29Yeah, it was a disaster because no one likes to discuss it, but let's be real.
04:35The damn injuries were a major problem.
04:37100%.
04:37Okay, so – and then they were supposed to be trying to build something.
04:42But you had that much success, so they went after it, which I had no issue with,
04:47and most people out there were begging for it.
04:49Now they went for it and it didn't work.
04:51You know what?
04:52Get back on it.
04:53And so far, it looked like they are trying to build something differently
04:56because they signed people that are a little younger.
04:59They gave – they didn't give them all one-year contracts.
05:02A lot of them got double digits or two years or three years, you know what I'm saying?
05:06Yeah.
05:07And they're thinking about what's going to happen continually because if you go out there
05:10and you have success this year, you don't want to have a whole new damn team
05:14or 50 more players coming to the next year.
05:17Right.
05:17And that's what they've had to do through two seasons.
05:19And I think they recognize that there's a real discussion here of –
05:28like it's on them to prove 24 was who they are and the direction they're headed
05:35and not a one-off outlier of this great season.
05:39And you're totally right that injuries are such a massive factor.
05:43injuries happen across the league, probably not with the severity, especially –
05:47I mean, Jaden missing time is going to be on a different level than everything else.
05:52Yeah.
05:53But the significance and the amount of the injuries at the defensive end position specifically
06:03kind of buried them.
06:05Totally.
06:05I mean, to have – to just have not only your best player –
06:09George Armstrong was having a heck of a season.
06:11He really started the year strong.
06:13But to not only lose the top, but to lose the depth as well.
06:18Yeah.
06:19And then you look at kind of what you're lining up there late in the year.
06:23Like, it really impacted them defensively.
06:26And that's not to suggest that there weren't other problems and structural problems
06:29and how they built it.
06:30Like, there's – it's a long, long list of things that went wrong.
06:34Yeah.
06:34But the injuries were a huge part of it.
06:37And I think, you know, they don't want to make excuses, right?
06:40They don't.
06:41But, I mean, what I'm saying to you is you get somebody injured,
06:45then you force another guy to play who's not ready.
06:48So he gets on the field.
06:50He's not ready probably physically.
06:51He's not ready mentally.
06:53He makes more mistakes.
06:54Then all of a sudden everything starts going haywire.
06:57People go, oh, man, this team sucks.
06:59No.
06:59You got people out there who's not ready to step out there and play yet.
07:03But the guys that were ready got hurt.
07:05And people always say, oh, I have no excuse.
07:08Well, if you're at work and a regular job and the guy who does all the damn work,
07:13who's the guy who leads the way, he don't show up one day,
07:17tell me your production don't drop.
07:20You know what I'm saying?
07:21And that's all just in the building.
07:24You know, if there's a guy at work,
07:26I'm sure that knows how to run that machine better than everybody out there.
07:29Oh, damn, he woke up this morning.
07:31He got a stomach bug.
07:33He can't come to work.
07:34The person that was behind him now moves into the place
07:37who's never ran that damn machine.
07:39All of a sudden, you got stuff going all kind of crazy.
07:43And then they're like, well, we don't know what happened.
07:45You know why?
07:46Because Bob, who ran the damn machine all the time, wasn't there.
07:50And now you got somebody else.
07:52We still got people that work there.
07:54But you know what?
07:55Everybody's doing something that they don't normally do.
07:58And that's where the problem popped up.
08:00Yeah, dude, it was – there's a lot of different reasons to it all, right?
08:05Like, it wasn't one simple thing,
08:07but it also was something that a lot of things have to change to make it work.
08:13Yeah.
08:13And I think everybody involved kind of recognizes that.
08:17And we'll see if it does.
08:18And injuries you can't predict.
08:20Jaden's health you can't predict.
08:22And, you know, kid didn't miss a game the rookie season.
08:25Everybody seems to kind of forget that when they talk about injury prone
08:29or can't last and all this.
08:31So I think people try to make too much of an assertion based on a smaller sample
08:37and got to give it a little bit of time.
08:39But they are, unfortunately, back in a position where there's questions.
08:44Like, all right, was 24 the real deal?
08:46Or was it another one of these outliers that we've seen this organization
08:52over the last 20 years?
08:53Like, oh, every couple of years they pop up and then they just can't keep it together.
08:56Certainly, I think everybody's hoping they keep this thing together.
08:59I think everybody's hoping they keep this thing together.
