00:03Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the Luster.
00:08This giant cephalopod-like sea creature, half octopus, half shark, is, many believe,
00:15stuff of fantasy, the kind of fictional monster Jules Verne might dream up.
00:21But then, there are those more open-minded souls, like myself, who believe this gigantic
00:27cryptid to be as real as you or I.
00:30I will present to you the evidence I have collated, proving this animal is no mere figment of the imagination.
00:35And it all begins with the first sighting, off the coast of St. Marie in 1823, by this man,
00:44a pirate by the name of Pierre Lafitte.
00:54Yeah, Lafitte was my great-great-great-grandfather.
00:57I tell you no lies.
00:59Still got the journey he had when he was pirating away.
01:02Passed on from generation to generation.
01:04And that's why this is the only boat trip where you can experience the exact place my ancestor witnessed.
01:12The Luska.
01:14Roll up, roll up!
01:16You know you want to.
01:17And I promise you guys, you will not be disappointed.
01:22So how was it?
01:24Are you a believer now?
01:26To be honest, I think I'm even less of a believer than I was before.
01:31I don't know why you bothered.
01:33Because I want to be prepared.
01:36I'm afraid nothing can prepare you for my ex-husband.
01:43Hello.
01:44Either that's him, or we've come to a soup kitchen by mistake.
01:52Hello, Charles.
01:53Cara.
01:54It's been a while, hasn't it?
01:56Oh.
01:59Stop it.
02:05This is Rory.
02:08Ah, yes.
02:09Didn't realise you were bringing him.
02:11Nice to meet you, Rory.
02:13It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
02:15Can't wait to hear all your stories about the Luska.
02:17Absolutely fascinated about it.
02:19Ah.
02:21Would you like a glass of wine?
02:23Just a cup of coffee will do, Rita.
02:26Let me see if I can find a waiter.
02:29Sit down.
02:35So how are you?
02:37I mean, you know, the...
02:39the anniversary.
02:41Feels strange to be back.
02:44Looks like it was only yesterday.
02:47I'm taking the boat out later, to...
02:49to where it happened.
02:50Fancy joining.
02:51You remember him together?
02:52No, I'd rather stay here.
02:54With Rory.
03:05I...
03:13Poor guy.
03:14Don't worry.
03:23You alright, my letter?
03:49It's just a bad dream.
03:58How have you been?
04:00Just went for a walk.
04:01That's all.
04:04Thanks.
04:30Morning, sir.
04:32You good?
04:33No.
04:34I am not good.
04:35What's wrong?
04:37Turns out I'm an uncle.
04:39Yes, mom.
04:40Yes, sir.
04:41I'm starting.
04:42What, I came to visit Uncle Merv anyway?
04:45That's Eloise.
04:46The niece I didn't know I had.
04:47So you're her Uncle Merv.
04:49No, I'm not.
04:51I mean, yes, I am her uncle, but not Merv.
04:53Never Merv.
04:54Understood?
04:55Okay.
04:56Clearly touched a nerve there.
04:59Well, I kind of miss him.
05:00So she's Solomon's daughter?
05:02I don't know why he couldn't just tell me that in the first place.
05:04He could have just said, well, as it happens, I do have a daughter.
05:07Are he and her mother together?
05:09Yeah, not for some time, apparently.
05:10She's supposed to be staying with her auntie Vondra.
05:12Well, she doesn't like it there, so she ran away and came here.
05:16We've got a case, I assume.
05:18Oh, my God.
05:19It's not a murder case, is it?
05:21Please let me come on a ride along, Uncle Merv.
05:24Please.
05:25Right.
05:26So firstly, you're not coming on any ride along.
05:29And secondly, it's not Uncle Merv.
05:31It's Mervyn, remember?
05:34Hi.
05:35I'm Naomi, by the way.
05:37I work with your Uncle Merv.
05:41Right.
05:42Go pack your stuff, young lady.
05:43You've got a boat to catch.
05:45I'm sending you back home to Antigua.
05:47What have you say, Uncle Merv?
05:49And it's not...
05:52I like her.
05:58Victim's name's Giles Parry, 58 years of age.
06:01Body was found floating six miles out at sea.
06:04Sergeant Fletchers with the postcard now.
06:06A couple of fishermen going out early this morning came across the body.
06:09But paramedics reckon he'd been in the water since last night.
06:13Thing is, this is already causing a stir on the heart.
06:17Why is that?
06:18Because of those marks on his body.
06:21They're all over his front and his back.
06:24And the bruising here.
06:26Some people are saying it was caused by the Luska.
06:29And that's what killed him.
06:31Sorry, what?
06:32It's a sea monster.
06:33A sea monster?
06:34Like a local legend kind of thing.
06:37Half shark, half octopus wraps its tentacles around you and drags you under.
06:41Hence...
06:42A sea monster?
06:43Not everybody believes in this thing.
06:45Most people don't.
06:46Do you?
06:48No, but it's still part of our history.
06:51Part of our culture.
06:52Right.
06:53Well, we can knock that theory on the head as a possible cause of death, alright?
06:56Except there's a little more to it than that, sir.
06:59That's why he's here.
07:07I've always wondered whether this would come back to haunt me.
07:11Seven years ago yesterday, Giles Parry's 16-year-old son, Benjamin, drowned that seal.
07:19In the exact same location as Giles' body was found this morning.
07:25A local fisherman told me that Mr. Parry had sailed out to that swamp yesterday.
07:31To pay his respects.
07:34Then he ended up dead himself.
07:38Was he stormy yesterday?
07:40Called the harbour master.
07:42It was come for the last 24 hours.
07:44Do we know what time he left the harbour?
07:46Just before 7 o'clock, according to the GPS.
07:49Also, there's a boat mechanic who's been fixing Mr. Parry's engine.
07:53So I'm leaving.
07:54He says there was definitely nobody else on the boat with him.
07:57It's arrived at the final destination.
07:59Half an hour later, radar shows no other boat near it at any point.
08:03So what happened to him?
08:05How did he end up dead with all those weird markings on him?
08:09Unless, you know, it was the lost girl.
08:14I need to break it to you, Officer Rose, but sea monsters don't exist?
08:17No, yeah, I know.
08:20But it'd be cool if they did do all right.
08:23What's that?
08:32Mr. Bullock?
08:33Our victim wasn't shot, right?
08:36No.
08:37And there was no gun found on the boat?
08:39Not that I've found so far.
08:45So what is that doing here?
08:55I don't know what happened on that boat.
08:57But the fact that we found this on it means it's suspicious.
09:01I think someone else was there, you know?
09:08I'm going to talk to Catherine.
09:10In what I know, James Parry was an isolated finger, but he did drink at her bar, and he would
09:16talk to her.
09:18I'm also going to contact the Guadalupe police and request the Benjamin Parry case files.
09:25So the search back then wasn't led by the St. Marie team?
09:28As it was, the Guadalupe Coast Guard, who was first contacted when the empty boat was discovered, they stayed there
09:35late.
09:37I bet that ran called.
09:38I did push for us to have a role, but the senior investigating officer wasn't interested.
09:48There's some people on St. Marie who think I should have pressed harder, especially when they ran into a dead
09:55end early on.
09:58It's always been felt more could have been done, not by me.
10:08Considering I am already persona non grata, I would like to do my bit to try and solve this case
10:16now, and win back the community's trust.
10:20I've located the victim's ex-wife. She and her partner are staying at a hotel just outside Tom.
10:34We arrived here two days ago to mark the anniversary of Kara's son's passing.
10:40I'm sorry to ask Ms. Smart, but your son Benjamin, why did he take the boat out on his own?
10:47Giles had always been into UFOs and aliens, that kind of thing.
10:53Our holidays were spent visiting Loch Ness, or the Bermuda Triangle, the Losca here on St. Marie.
10:59Ben was getting even more fanatical than he stood. That's why he snuck out on his own, and took the
11:05boat we'd hired out for a last-ditch sighting of the Losca.
11:10The weather turned bad. The sea was rough. He never came back.
11:19I kept hoping they'd find him alive, with a life jacket on, just floating somewhere.
11:25This time passed, you have to accept that he's not coming back.
11:30So, you returned Tom to England?
11:33After ten months, Giles and I were arguing non-stop by then.
11:37I just needed some space, some time to process it all.
11:42Where is he?
11:46Giles was convinced the Losca took their son. He became obsessed.
11:51That's why he stayed on here when I left. To try and prove the Losca exists.
11:56And he really, truly believed in it.
12:02And yesterday, did you see Giles at all?
12:05We had an early dinner at five. It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
12:10And how was that? How was Giles then?
12:12It was fine. You know, quiet.
12:15Giles was Giles. Still as delusional as he ever was.
12:20Did Giles ever own a gun, that's all?
12:22Not why we were together. And I struggled to leave. He bought one while he was out here.
12:27What exactly happened to Giles? You said that he was found dead at sea.
12:32I assumed it was an accident. But is there more to it than that?
12:36Well, we're not sure yet. We're still working on that one.
12:49Yeah, my friend's dad swears he saw the Losca one time.
12:52Okay, son. Come on.
12:53There's nobody to see him afterwards.
12:56Let's keep our focus on the keys.
12:58Let's keep our focus on the keys.
13:32Vondra, Vondra. It's alright. She's back at my place. She's safe.
13:36Thanks.
13:36Okay, look, I'll call you back in a bit.
13:41Hey, Uncle Merv. Hope you're hungry. I ordered lutz.
13:45Which reminds me, I borrowed a credit card this morning.
13:49Needed it to pay for the board to get back to St. Marie. And dinner.
13:52You really are your father's daughter, aren't you?
13:54I know, right?
13:56What's going on, Eloise?
13:58Why are you back here?
14:00Because we need to talk. About Dad.
14:03We could have done that this morning. Why didn't you mention it then?
14:06I was waiting for the right moment.
14:08And before I know it, you're shoving me on her butt back home.
14:13All right. What about your dad?
14:17We need to work out a plan, Uncle Merv.
14:19A plan for what?
14:20To get him out of prison.
14:22To find evidence that proves he's innocent.
14:25Okay, um, what exactly did your dad tell you about him being arrested?
14:31Just that he was set up and shouldn't be in jail.
14:34That it's a miscarriage.
14:37A miscarriage of justice.
14:40So, you need to help him, right?
14:46Why don't you go and get some plates and cockery, yeah?
14:56So, you idiots.
15:16Solomon clearly hasn't told her about the scam he got caught up in.
15:19That he has got to shot someone.
15:22And held me hostage.
15:25He's dressed it up like he was the victim.
15:28And she obviously idolizes him.
15:30What are you going to do?
15:32I should just tell her the truth, right?
15:36Just tell her in a nice way.
15:39Not in a...
15:41your kind of way.
15:43What is a my kind of way?
15:44You know, sometimes you can be a...
15:47tiny bit insensitive.
15:50Insensitive?
15:52Me, insensitive?
15:53That is rubbish.
15:55I mean, if anything,
15:56it's everyone else who is too sensitive.
15:58Sure.
15:59That's totally what it is.
16:04Eloise.
16:07Right, um,
16:09I'm off to work now.
16:10So we can have dinner later, yeah?
16:13And we'll, um,
16:15we'll talk.
16:17Okay, Uncle Mark.
16:21Old school.
16:22I like it.
16:28Right, where we at with the case?
16:30Anything from the lab yet?
16:33Post-mortem's estimating time of death between 7.30 and 8.00.
16:37So,
16:38the victim leaves the harbour at 7.00,
16:42dies between 7.30 and 8.00 out at sea,
16:44just after he drops Ancum.
16:46And, cause of death,
16:48was internal bleeding due to a ruptured spleen,
16:51which, in theory,
16:53could have been caused by something
16:55gripping him tightly,
16:57like the tentacles of the Lusk.
17:00Or,
17:01more likely,
17:03something else.
17:05Same with the red markings,
17:07kinda like friction burns,
17:08but,
17:08there's nothing at the scene to suggest
17:10what might have caused it.
17:12What about the search of the victim's house?
17:15Matty and Seb are just starting.
17:32Sarge!
17:32You have to see this.
17:34Ten-year-old Seb will be losing his mind right now.
17:38I've seen ones that central in here.
17:44This is gonna be the best search ever.
17:46Alright, so Rose,
17:48you start on the computer,
17:49I'll hit the cabinets.
17:50Ah, cool.
17:57You alright, Sarge?
17:59Yeah,
18:00it's just my old boss from Jamaica,
18:01I'll call him once we're done with this.
18:13So what do we know about our victim?
18:15Giles Parry worked as a paramedic
18:17back in the UK
18:18until he moved out here seven years ago,
18:21spent all his savings buying a boat,
18:23and earned a small income
18:24giving talks about the legend of the Luska.
18:27What about these two?
18:28Any sniff of a motive yet?
18:29We're still waiting on
18:31Mr. Lyons' background and financial checks,
18:33but he and Cara have been together
18:35just over a year,
18:36met on a dating app.
18:37Now,
18:38as he only met the victim
18:39for the first time yesterday,
18:41I'm struggling to find a reason
18:42for him wanting Mr. Parry dead,
18:44but
18:44she's a different story.
18:46Miss Smart
18:47previously worked as a teacher
18:48before giving that up
18:49to write a book
18:50a few years ago,
18:51a memoir
18:52about losing her son.
18:54I skim read it,
18:55and she's very honest
18:57about how hurt
18:58and angry she felt
18:59about Joust's behavior.
19:01When I needed my husband's love
19:03the most,
19:04he disappeared down
19:05the rabbit hole of fantasy,
19:06casting me aside
19:07for his futile belief
19:09in a mythical beast.
19:10I mean,
19:11the guy had gone
19:11full on Looney Tunes,
19:12didn't he?
19:13What was that you said earlier
19:15about not being insensitive?
19:18Look, I'm not...
19:18Where it gets interesting
19:19is the book's no longer
19:21bringing in any money.
19:22She's basically broke.
19:23I spoke to her
19:25literary agent in the UK,
19:26and apparently
19:27a US TV production company
19:29has offered to make
19:30a documentary
19:31about her and Joust's son
19:32going missing.
19:34It's worth a quarter
19:35of a million dollars.
19:37Oh, I'm sensing a but.
19:39It going ahead
19:40was dependent
19:41on Mr. Parry
19:43agreeing to appear
19:44in the documentary too.
19:45Don't tell me.
19:47He didn't want to.
19:54So we spoke
19:54to the staff here.
19:56Well, that dinner
19:56you had with Joust,
19:57it wasn't as sedate
19:59as you said it was.
20:00According to them,
20:01you got quite worked up,
20:03Mr. Marks.
20:03Angry that your ex-husband
20:05was refusing
20:06to agree to the documentary.
20:08Well, that's an exaggeration
20:09if ever I heard one.
20:10No, it's not.
20:10It's the truth.
20:11Joust, please.
20:12I need this.
20:13Why are you being so stubborn?
20:14Because I know
20:15what they'll do.
20:16Make me have to look
20:16like some mad conspiracy theorist.
20:18I hate you, Joust.
20:20So much.
20:23I didn't just lose
20:24a son seven years ago.
20:26I lost my husband as well.
20:28He never once thought of me
20:29that maybe he needed
20:31to be there for me.
20:33And even now,
20:34years later,
20:34I ask for his help
20:36because,
20:37yes, I need the money.
20:38I thought at least
20:39he owed me that one favour,
20:41but no,
20:42not even that.
20:44Thing is, Miss Mark,
20:45we checked with
20:45the production company
20:46and that documentary
20:47has officially got the go-ahead.
20:48So now with Joust dying
20:50in suspicious circumstances
20:51and he's got the go-ahead.
