00:16My name is Benedikt BΓΆhm and I'm a speed mountaineer.
00:21All the speed projects I'm doing are human powered and sometimes the bike is a great
00:27support because I make a lot of distance very fast.
00:32When I was a kid I had a strong relationship with my bike.
00:36I was going out anywhere with a bike and I think it was my ticket to freedom.
00:45However as a speed mountaineer I wouldn't say that cycling is an easy part for me because
00:49I never got used to sit on a bike for a long time.
01:00What's going on?
01:02Better than the Viking.
01:04The Viking killed me.
01:05Especially the last 1,000 meters.
01:08But really, there's the road with all the trucks, hardcore.
01:16And then I really thought I'm not going to make it up.
01:21It's really good to have no bike.
01:37I can't believe it.
01:42I can't believe it.
01:49So it took me a little bit less than 14 and a half hours to the top.
01:56I have to say it was really, really, really tough.
02:01I have to say it was really tough.
02:31Let's go.
03:00I have to say it was really tough for me, but you don't think it's the only thing it might
03:14I think this project was very special because it had two elements which were differentiating
03:20from any of the projects that I did before.
03:23It was all about the diversity of Nepal, first of all going to the jungle, so at the very
03:28south border of Nepal, together with the WWF, the one with the panther bear, where I'm
03:33an ambassador.
03:34I was agreeing with them that I have a look at one of the nature resorts, where we were
03:40looking at not only the protected animals, but also at the initiatives they are doing
03:45there.
03:45And then travel all the way to the Dipathian border, where we wanted to climb Himal-Himlung,
03:52a 7,000-meter peak in record time.
03:54This was our target, and all this together with Paka Sherpa, he's a Nepalese pro climber,
04:00he's an international certified mountain guide, and he's also a brand new Dynavet athlete.
04:07It's really amazing what kind of contrast you can have within a couple of kilometers, more
04:23less.
04:24Becoming a WWF ambassador was a big thing for me, because it's not a sprint, it's not
04:29something short term, it's not something which I just do and then that's over for me.
04:33It's something which I want to do for the rest of my life.
04:37We will take it up to the summit, no?
04:39Sure.
04:40Somehow felt inside of me I want to concentrate on one certain organization, action, and form
04:47a long-term partnership.
04:48That's how I am.
04:49Also in business, that's how I am in general, also in friendship.
04:52So having that said that the WWF is so diverse and has so many things and so many opportunities
04:57in worldwide initiatives.
04:59I look a little bit crazy, huh?
05:01Sorry.
05:02I had a bike, a little bike accident on the mountain training, but the doctor said I can
05:07fly.
05:08So I took the flight.
05:09So thank you very much for welcoming me here and all the friends.
05:13We are really looking forward to support the WWF and I think the most...
05:18One thing is clear.
05:18We are today 8 billion people on this planet.
05:21There will be more pressure on this planet, even more than there is already today.
05:25And I think to protect ourselves from ourselves is probably most of the efficient ways to
05:31keep our biodiversity.
05:33And if you had, for example, more marine resorts, the fish population could grow in a much more
05:37efficient way.
05:38And that's the same for, in the end, for these nature resorts or for the national park
05:42we've seen in Chitwan, where the big target is how do we keep that biodiversity, but also
05:50keep the humans next to each other.
05:51So the pictures have been incredible because you can really imagine there is this massive
05:57zoo.
05:59But right next to that national park, to the zoo, there are living more than 60,000 people
06:04at the border or in that zoo more or less.
06:07So it's really about how do we get the balance between protecting the nature and keeping humans
06:13happy as well.
06:14Good to see you.
06:15Hello.
06:17What I really learned while visiting the national park together with WWF was that you have to
06:23win the humans if you want to protect nature.
06:26...to inspire other people that how wildlife and humanity can...
06:31how can we build a paternities for all these people living there, that they make a living,
06:36that we improve their lives, that they don't have the motivation to get in conflict with
06:41the animals.
06:42The dung of cow and buffalo.
06:45And everyday morning they put it over here.
06:48Okay.
06:49And mix some water.
06:51Yeah.
06:52And they slur it and go from this hole.
06:57Where it goes?
06:58There is the one digester tank.
07:02There is the magic coming out.
07:04I guess.
07:05It comes out, everything in the tube.
07:07And you can cook.
07:08You can cook with your own pool.
07:11So the problem around here, you have around 300 household.
07:16And in most of the area, they have a problem with the lepers.
07:18So to mitigate that, we have been using different aspects.
07:23As you can see the coral.
07:24This is called the coral.
07:25Especially for the livestock.
07:28They are using over there as well.
07:30So it's more a livestock problem.
07:31Well, yeah.
07:32So because the leopard, you didn't take away the lifestyle.
07:35How big is the leopard?
07:38Big size.
07:39Yeah?
07:40Yeah.
07:45Here, over there, you see a big fence going through.
07:47And this is really where the national park starts again.
07:49It's a lot of different islands.
07:50This is the fence to prevent the big animals, you know, maybe the big five to come in
07:55and to go here into these fish farming, these fish archicultures.
07:58Where local people have solutions to not go out into the wilderness.
08:03Where there's animal-human conflict.
08:05And there's a lot of cool things we saw now in the past day and also today.
08:09Hiwan, welcome to you.
08:11Yeah.
08:12I'm most impressed by the people.
08:14And you meet people who've been attacked by wildlife maybe 20 years ago by a bear.
08:19And they still are champions for wildlife.
08:22And there is this large tolerance for living with wildlife and this willingness to coexist
08:27with it and saying, okay, we live in the space of nature.
08:30And globally, we need to realize that we need the nature for a safe and healthy life.
08:34But we need to be clear that right now we need sort of ambitious conservation like here,
08:38but we need more of it.
08:40But we also need to transform the whole way how we produce and how we consume.
08:44And that affects individual people.
08:47How we can choose what we buy.
08:48We can choose how we behave, what we eat.
08:50But it also affects entire systems.
08:53So if you're concerned, it's important that you speak to people who make the larger decisions.
08:57In the economy, in politics.
08:59So that they prioritize nature more.
09:02We are the reason for the species crisis, for the biodiversity crisis.
09:06It's very clear.
09:07Science says humans are the reason.
09:08So because we're doing it, we also can stop doing it.
09:15Local people that they understand actually with a life tag.
09:18It has a value for the entire area, for the entire environment.
09:21It makes it attractive.
09:22It's a, it's a, yeah, it's a, it's a gift.
09:24It's a diamond.
09:25It's a tourism attraction.
09:26I think these species are not only the property of Nepal.
09:32It's the property of earth.
09:35That's why everyone should be focused to preserve it.
09:40The illegal wildlife trade has a volume, yearly volume between 7 and 20 billion euro.
09:46So it's a huge business, which makes it very difficult to work with.
09:50And what we're trying in WWF is to work along the entire illegal value chain.
09:54So working against the poaching, working against the smuggling and working against the demand.
09:59But it's very hard to work against organized crime.
10:01But to be fair, not everything is organized crime.
10:04Local poaching may not be that organized.
10:13That's what I see.
10:14I mean, this needs money.
10:16And this was also a part which motivated me to create Helping Band.
10:21It's about a lot of small contributions, no matter how small they are,
10:25even if they're only five euros, make a big contribution.
10:28And I thought about, hey, so a bracelet could be a nice result of that.
10:32It could be a sign of linking people together, of uniting them and showing that you care.
10:38I think that's in the end it.
10:40A bracelet costs five euro, and Helping Band is donating exclusively to the WWF with regards to their profits.
