00:00Cricket and at close of play on the second day of the first test in Nagpur, India are 136 for
00:05one in reply to England's first innings total of 393.
00:10England's batsmen resisted stoutly this morning but won't have been cheered by the news that their injured captain, Michael Vaughan,
00:16is out for the whole series.
00:18Joe Wilson reports.
00:20In Nagpur in March, you have to learn to live with the heat or be crushed by it.
00:26The signs are that England are starting to enjoy the conditions here.
00:29Paul Collingwood produced his best test match innings to date as England transformed their fortunes.
00:35For company, he had only tail-enders.
00:38But then tail-enders are not supposed to bat as well as Steve Harbison can.
00:43When he fell, the score was up beyond 300, but there was more to come.
00:47Collingwood went on the attack, pummeling the Indian bowling.
00:51His test career has been stop and start, often a popular but unsung squad member.
00:56So his century was a moment of personal triumph and collective pleasure.
01:01It was a great relief for everybody as well in the dressing room and the managers.
01:05I've been waiting for that for a long time.
01:08When England went out to bowl, the success was almost immediate.
01:12Brenda Saywerks smashing the ball straight to Kevin Peterson.
01:15But that's where the wickets stopped as India regained their composure.
01:19Jaffa and captain Dravid bringing them back into the match with a century stand.
01:25So far in two days, just 11 wickets have fallen here.
01:28So bowling out India cheaply on the third day will be tough.
01:31But as Paul Collingwood has proved in cricket, patience is often rewarded.
01:37Joe Wilson, BBC News in Nagpur.
01:40England's bowlers, here's Joe Wilson.
01:43Day three in Nagpur and England off to a flyer.
01:47India's captain Raul Dravid gone LBW.
01:49Next out, Wazim Jaffa, safely held by captain Flintoff.
01:54The very next ball, Lakshman trapped in front of the stumps.
01:58Three wickets and 11 balls for Hoggard.
02:01Monty Panasar has been cheered all over India.
02:05Now England's first Sikh player claimed his first wicket.
02:09Tendulkar of all people, Panasar's boyhood hero.
02:14Well, straight after lunch, it was the Hoggard-Flintoff combination again.
02:17India seven down.
02:19Hoggard had taken five wickets.
02:21It's vitally important that we got off to a good start this morning.
02:24We went out there to put patience into practice
02:27and just try and get as many balls as we can in the right areas.
02:30Well, Matthew Hoggard's wickets certainly put England in a strong position.
02:33But as the day wore on, back came India.
02:36Now Mohamed Kaif led the resistance.
02:39Ian Anil Kumble took India past 300.
02:42But as the shadows lengthened, Harmson forced Kumble to edge to slip.
02:47And Panasar, persistent to the last, grabbed the prize wicket of Kaif.
02:52Joe Wilson, BBC News, Nagpur.
02:55It was another good day for England in the first test against India in Nagpur.
03:00Alistair Cook made a century on his debut,
03:03putting England in a strong position going into the final day.
03:05They closed on 297 for three.
03:08That's a lead of 367.
03:11Here's Joe Wilson.
03:13England needed to be busy with time left in the test running short.
03:17Hoggard obliged, ending the Indian innings in his first over.
03:22With England 70 ahead, opening batsmen Strauss and Cook
03:26safely took them to lunch in their second inning.
03:28But when Strauss and Bell fell,
03:30it was down to Peterson to provide the acceleration.
03:37His innings came to an end on 87.
03:39One flamboyant stroke too many, but he's done his job.
03:43Now it was left to Alistair Cook to round things off in style.
03:46A week ago, he was in the air somewhere on route to Nagpur.
03:50Now he has a century in his second test match innings after 50 in the first.
03:55What a test debut.
03:57It hasn't really sunk in yet.
03:58Obviously delighted.
04:00Delighted to score 100 and, I don't know, words can't really describe what I feel at the moment.
04:05I'm just going to let it soak in and just enjoy the moment.
04:09Well, a tour which began with so many problems for England is now awash with positives.
04:14If they can bowl out India here on the final day and win the match,
04:18well, then that would be the perfect finish.
04:21Joe Wilson, BBC News, Nepal.
04:25The cricket and the second test between India and England in Mahali
04:28has come to life after two days of heavy interruption by rain.
04:32England captain Andrew Flintoff topscored with 70 to haul the tourists to a respectable 300 all-out.
04:38And he later produced the delivery that dismissed Indian star batsman Sachin Tendulkar for just four.
04:45India will resume the fourth day on 149 for four.
04:49Ian Bell's stunning catch, removing Yuvraj Singh for the last wicket of the day.
04:55Upper hand going into the final day of the second test against England in Mahali.
04:59Indian captain Rahul Dravid made 95 out of their first innings total of 338.
05:05He was bowled by Andrew Flintoff, one of four wickets for the England all-rounder.
05:09But leg spinner Anil Kumble struck three quick blows towards the end of the day
05:14to leave England in a perilous position.
05:16They're 112 for five, just 74 runs ahead.
05:22And England have lost the second test against India.
05:24They were skittled out for only 181 in their second innings,
05:28leaving India an easy target.
05:30Here's Sally Nugent.
05:33England had been hoping to hang on for a draw.
05:36Before long, they were desperately trying to save fate.
05:39Geraint Jones was the first of three quick wickets for India
05:42and their gifted young debutant, Munaf Patel.
05:45Matthew Hoggard bowled for just four with a toe-crushing ball.
05:51Andrew Flintoff was inspirational as stand-in captain,
05:54taking his 20th Test 50.
05:57But Flintoff's determination to pile on the runs was his undoing.
06:03England came out to field with India needing just 144 to win.
06:07They lost to Asim Jaffa with the score on 39,
06:11but that set-up Raoul Dravid and Birenda Sowag.
06:14They added 105 to guide India home.
06:17Now England must look forward to the third and final test.
06:20This side does scrap.
06:22We fight hard and there's a lot of character.
06:24And every quality we have is going to have to come to the party next week in Bombay.
06:28The best England could hope for there is to square the series.
06:32Sally Nugent, BBC News.
06:36Now to cricket.
06:36And England have made a good start to the third Test against India in Mumbai.
06:40Opening batsman Andrew Strauss scored 128, his first century of the Tour.
06:44And the decision of Indian captain Raoul Dravid to put England in backfired further
06:49as Ois Shah made a half-century on his debut before retiring with cramps in his hands.
06:54England were 272 for three at the close.
06:57They need to win the match, of course, to draw the series.
07:00England's cricketers had a mixed second day in the third and final Test against India in Mumbai.
07:05Ois Shah came back from injury overnight to score 88 on his Test debut,
07:09but England lost their last six wickets for just 74 runs and were all out for 400.
07:15Matthew Hoggard took two wickets to help reduce India to 89 for three at the close.
07:21In a strong position after day three of the third and final Test against India in Mumbai,
07:26James Anderson took four wickets as they bowled India out for 279.
07:30And by the close, England have progressed to 31 for two in their second innings,
07:34giving them an overall lead of 152.
07:39Cricket now and England are in a strong position after day three of the third and final Test against India
07:44in Mumbai.
07:45After bowling out India for 279, England ended the day with a lead of 152.
07:51Here's Andy Swiss.
07:55England needed a good start and they got one.
07:58Typically it was Andrew Flintoff that made the breakthrough,
08:00but it was other players that really rose to the occasion,
08:04like wicketkeeper Geraint Jones, another spectacular effort accounting for Rappel Druvid.
08:09Not bad for a man whose catching has been under scrutiny.
08:14But the unlikeliest hero was James Anderson.
08:17He was only in the team because of England's injury crisis,
08:20but his superb throw accounted for Mahendra Dhoni,
08:23and his bowling was just as effective.
08:26With Jones now catching everything in sight,
08:28England were in control and Anderson did the rest.
08:33His fourth wicket giving England a healthy first innings lead of 121.
08:38All they needed now was a solid start from their batsman.
08:41Wishful thinking.
08:43First Andrew Strauss and then Ian Bell succumbed,
08:46and the gripping finale to this match is now about the only certainty.
08:51Andy Swiss, BBC News.
08:53England have set India a big target of 313 runs to win the third test in Mumbai.
08:59The highlight of England's second innings was this six from Captain Andrew Flintoff.
09:04He scored a half century as the tourists were bowled out for 191.
09:09Replying, India lost an early wicket to reach 18 for one at the close,
09:13still 297 runs behind.
09:15It sets up an exciting final day tomorrow.
09:18England must win the match to square the series.
09:21In the cricket, India will have to post a record fourth innings total in Mumbai
09:26if they are to defeat England in the final test of the series.
09:29Day four wasn't exactly a thriller minute.
09:32The tourists only scoring 160 runs in almost an entire day.
09:36A half century from Andrew Flintoff, one of the few highlights.
09:40At stumps, India were 18 for one, some 295 short of the required total.
09:48This was a day when it felt that cricket had gone into slow motion
09:51as England sought to grind out a lead big enough to give them a chance of victory.
09:56It took the Indian attack 14 overs even to bring to an end the vigil of night watchman Sean Udall.
10:02And they will have sensed England's growing unease when Anil Kumbe spectacularly claimed Kevin Petersen's skull.
10:08Well, he's taken a blinder.
10:09Not bad for a 35-year-old who bowled far more overs than anyone.
10:15Oe Shah, again impressing on his debut, kept accumulating watchfully.
10:19But straight after lunch, having reached 38, he recklessly threw it away by badly misjudging a single.
10:27With England 85 for five, Captain Andrew Flintoff had to consolidate.
10:32Even so, he led a charmed life.
10:36Doni's missed stumping was to be costly, but it did make England adopt an overly defensive mindset.
10:43Not until after Paul Collingwood had been athletically snapped up by Harbourjan,
10:47did Flintoff revert to more customary mode to reach his fourth successive half-century.
10:52He eventually went for exactly 50, but England, 313 ahead, had left time for only nine overs at India's batsmen.
10:59That was enough for Anderson to remove Pathan, but they may well regret their slow progress tomorrow.
11:05Kevin Geary, BBC News.
11:08And England's cricketers have pulled off a stunning victory in the third and final test in India.
11:13They bowled out the home side's batsmen for just 100 runs, winning the game and levelling the series.
11:18Kevin Geary reports.
11:21For Andrew Flintoff and his inexperienced, depleted team,
11:24this was a victory to rank almost alongside last summer's Ashes Triumph.
11:28Without five of those heroes, they not only beat India in their Mumbai fortress,
11:32they humiliated them, Cumbre the first and a long procession back to the pavilion.
11:38Predictably, the skipper was leading from the front,
11:40taking the morning's second wicket to banish any prospect of an unlikely home win.
11:46While the little master, Sachin Tendulka, remained, a draw was still a possibility.
11:50But when Flintoff struck again to remove his opposite number, Dravid, England scented blood.
11:56Next over, veteran spinner Sean Udall collected the great prize.
12:00Tendulka, smartly taken by Bell.
12:03And when Saywag was trapped by Anderson, India had lost three wickets for only two runs
12:08and were into a meltdown typified by one of Test cricket's more bizarre interludes.
12:14Dhoni's wild swing sent a skier towards Monty Panazar.
12:17But Monty had got completely the wrong map reference.
12:21Bemusement all round, which was compounded just two balls later,
12:24when Dhoni did exactly the same ridiculous thing.
12:26This time, Monty held his nerve and the ball.
12:30The end came swiftly.
12:32England had won by a whopping 212 runs.
12:35We played some good stuff out here.
12:36And it's had one last push over these four and a half days.
12:39And the manner in which we've played, we've taken on India with a young team.
12:43I think it's the first time we've won here in 20 years, a Test match.
12:46So, yeah, it's definitely up there.
12:47They might have only drawn the series, but they'll feel like they've won it.
12:51Kevin Geary, BBC News.
