24:01And whilst it's not always as sought after as it once was,
24:05there's one man that can't get enough of it.
24:08Somerset-based painter David Mendel has a passion for turning the drab into the dramatic.
24:17David, what a pleasure it is to be here.
24:20We're surrounded by pieces that are a wonderful mix.
24:24So, this is obviously an original piece.
24:26And then we've got these lamp bases.
24:28Is this your work?
24:29Oh, yes.
24:30I mean, these are modern lamps.
24:32Oh, I thought they were going to be stone.
24:34No.
24:35No, no, no, no.
24:36I mean, I have these made.
24:39These are really painted, look like granite.
24:41Those are like red porphyry.
24:43Some of David's pieces are extremely detailed,
24:47like this cabinet with its Chinese or chinoiserie inspiration.
24:51But other techniques are even more fun.
24:53This table, which is French, but the top, which is just wood,
25:00was a particularly hideous bright orange brown.
25:03And so I repainted the top to look like granite.
25:06You put down a dust sheet, put it on the floor and make the most enormous mess.
25:10Oh, that sounds fun.
25:11It is.
25:12You know, with black paint, white paint, beige paint,
25:17until you've sort of got the sort of mess you want.
25:21I'm keen to see David at work.
25:23So we're heading to his workshop to see a piece he has on the go.
25:27This is what I'm currently working on at the moment.
25:30Right.
25:30It was a brown table, which I think I perhaps paid four or five pounds for, which is going to
25:36be a black and gold table that will slightly hark at that very pretty Chinese work table there.
25:43If you lift the lid, you'll see what I'm basing this table on.
25:47Look at that. It's so fresh, isn't it?
25:49Which is that rather simpler little pattern.
25:52And we're turning it into a games table as opposed to a work table.
25:56Right.
25:57And so it'll be something to put between a couple of chairs.
26:01That's utterly beautiful.
26:03So what are you doing and how are you doing it?
26:05The first thing to do was to take off all the brown polish.
26:09Then give the table a coat of rather red-brown undercoat.
26:13And then you start putting on black paint.
26:16It is absolutely standard blackboard paint you get in any hardware shop.
26:20It's lovely to draw or paint on top of.
26:22And then with white carbon paper, which shows up very nicely on the black,
26:28and you literally just draw around the original drawing.
26:32It's just to give you a guide.
26:33And that comes out on the black.
26:36And then you paint, which I'm using good quality gold paint.
26:42And I'll probably make a mistake now.
26:44Is add in the leaves.
26:47You have to do nice long strokes for leaves and loose, exactly.
26:52So here I've added in some black veins for the central bit of the leaf.
26:58Just to make it a little bit more detailed,
27:00like the pattern on the inside of the antique tabletop.
27:05I'll do one more leaf, and then I think you can have a go.
27:09I don't think that's wise.
27:11Well, I'm not risking my table.
27:13Oh good, phew!
27:15You can have this, which I did specially thinking that you might want to have a go.
27:21So, I mean, your hand was so confident.
27:23I think one has to point in the right direction.
27:25Generally, it's a good idea to go the way the leaf goes, which is towards the point.

27:32It looks perfect.
27:33When you get to an end, you have to turn the brush so it takes it out to a point.
27:38That's working beautifully.
27:39It's not looking great, but it's not looking too bad.

27:51The next thing is to give the whole thing an antiquing varnish.
27:57Make the gold a little bit richer and deeper.
28:00Make the black a bit less jet black.
28:02Just to blend everything in together so it's not quite so terribly contrasty.
28:07It's probably at least four full days' work.
28:12So even if you sold something like this for several hundred pounds,
28:17you'd be making a lot less than the minimum wage.
28:21A labour of love.
