Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 30

In-book reference: Book 2, Hadith 23

Topic: Sins as a remnant of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and the status of the sinner.

Description:
Does committing a major sin make someone a non-Muslim? In this vital episode, we explore Sahih al-Bukhari 30, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) corrects a companion for using a racial slur during an argument.

The Hadith tells the story of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), who insulted another man by mentioning his mother. The Prophet (ﷺ) told him: "You are a man who still has some characteristics of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) in him."

Key Lessons from this Hadith:

The Definition of Jahiliyyah: Why arrogance, racism, and insulting lineage are considered "Ignorant" traits that contradict the spirit of Islam.

Sinner vs. Disbeliever: Imam al-Bukhari uses this to prove that a person remains a Muslim even if they commit a sin, as long as they do not commit Shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Equality in Islam: The Prophet's (ﷺ) strictness in ensuring that no believer feels superior to another based on race or background.

Treatment of Workers/Subordinates: The beautiful instruction to "feed them from what you eat and clothe them from what you wear."

00:00Narrated al-Ma'rur
00:02At Ar-Rabada, I met Abu Dhar who was wearing a cloak, and his slave too was wearing a similar
00:07one.
00:08I asked about the reason for it.
00:10He replied,
00:12I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names.
00:15The Prophet said to me,
00:17O Abu Dhar, did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names?
00:21You still have some characteristics of ignorance.
00:24Your slaves are your brothers, and Allah has put them under your command.
00:28So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats, and dress
00:32him of what he wears.
00:34Do not ask them, slaves, to do things beyond their capacity, power, and if you do so, then
00:40help them.
