01:19Hello Jenson, hello everyone, very well.
01:21Was it a friendly T-Rex?
01:22The name of Rexie, it sounds a very friendly T-Rex.
01:25Well you think so, but he came at me mate,
01:27faster than an Aston Martin down the streets.
01:29Naughty Rexie, bad boy.
01:31Right, the Aston Martins are indeed going out
01:33and they have made a little bit of progress
01:35but the car is slow around here
01:37with the limitations they have on their engine.
01:40They do intend to do as much of Q1 as possible
01:43but we'll see what happens after that.
01:45Do watch out for the Audis though, everybody.
01:48They are quick around here.
01:49Niko Hulkenberg 7th, Gabriel Bortoleto 9th in free practice 3.
01:54So they're going pretty well.
01:56Arvid Lindblad a little bit short on laps so far today
01:59but he's out ready for qualifying as well.
02:02Ferrari ready to go.
02:03If you're expecting to see the Macarena wing,
02:05the one that does the full 180, you'll be disappointed.
02:09There aren't too many straights here, unlike China
02:11so they're not running it this weekend.
02:13And otherwise, yeah, Red Bull and I haven't seen the McLarens out
02:18but they look like they're all ready.
02:20They're just going to let some of the early runners clean up the tracker bed.
02:22And one of those early runners is Liam Lawson,
02:25New Zealand's finest and barrelling into Turn 1 he goes on his opening lap
02:30and if he gets into Q3 today that might not be a surprise.
02:34The racing ball's going well, Liam Lawson going well.
02:36On the subject of Audi, both drivers going back into the garage after FP3
02:41and we're asked, right, okay, what do we do at the car to make it better?
02:44What's wrong with it?
02:45It actually feels quite fine, was what both drivers were saying.
02:48And that is progress for Audi in just their third Grand Prix.
02:51Yeah, I think that's the biggest surprise so far this weekend
02:53is the pace of the Audi and both drivers have been up there.
02:56Very impressive when you're considering they've all started,
02:59obviously, from scratch building these new power units
03:01but they've actually started from scratch.
03:03They've had to get the personal involved with the experience to build it.
03:08So really, really impressive
03:09and really nice to see the Audi name in the top ten.
03:12It certainly is.
03:13Four rings on the side of the garage
03:15and we'll see their drivers out very shortly, I'm sure.
03:19As far as the progress of Liam Lawson.
03:21Round Spoon curve he does.
03:23And now there's the slingshot as he gets onto the straight.
03:25It was twitchy on the way in there, wasn't it?
03:27Through the first part of Spoon.
03:28I have to say the racing ball's car this weekend
03:31looks fantastic, the colour scheme.
03:33I love it.
03:34It looks like it should be drifting around here, though.
03:36Looks a bit like a drift car.
03:38Yeah, it's got the wheels for it, isn't it?
03:40They are proper drifters' wheels on that.
03:43One more chicane to go and a final corner
03:45and they've looked a bit twitchy going through there
03:47but that's fairly solid there from Liam Lawson
03:50who puts the time in of a 1.30, 1.7.
03:53There's your benchmark time to try and chase.
03:56His teammate, Arvid Lindblad, is next across the line.
03:58He goes a tenth of a second faster.
04:01Now, Arvid's had issues.
04:02He got one lap in no time at all during FP2.
04:07It's his first visit, isn't it, in Formula 1
04:09as a rookie to Suzuka.
04:12If he out qualifies Liam Lawson today
04:13for the first time this season,
04:15that is a marvellous performance.
04:16It would be.
04:17I think looking at the times now,
04:19they're quite a way off what they were doing in FP3.
04:21They were down into the 29s.
04:23But also, they have taken a few laps
04:26to get these tyres in the working range
04:28or maybe it's just them getting their eye in around here.
04:30Should we expect times to be half a second a lap slower
04:34given that, unlike in the practice sessions,
04:38we've now got that limit on a megajoule that can be harvested,
04:42which sounds like something you hear on a farming programme.
04:45But basically, the batteries will take 8 megajoules
04:49and that's it for the entirety of a lap.
04:52But they can't do it all in one go
04:53because the battery would be too heavy.
04:55But it's 8.5 megajoules.
04:57Nine will overtake both for practice sessions.
04:59We've taken half a megajoule off
05:01to stop that lifting and coasting at the end of a straight.
05:05Yeah, which also makes it difficult.
05:06You know, they've jumped into qualifying
05:08and they've got 8 megajoules and 8.5 megajoules,
05:11which is definitely more difficult
05:13because you're just unsure of where those braking points are now
05:16because there's less lifting and coasting or less reach up.
05:20Lifting and coasting has always been part of Formula 1.
05:29You're right, I did a lot of lifting codes.
05:31I always ran out of fuel.
05:32So the last six laps of the race, I was, yeah, maximum 70% throttle.
05:36Oh, man, we need to talk about that later tonight over dinner.
05:40The anguish of going on to win a race
05:43but nearly running out of fuel.
05:45Now, here's Oscar Piastri trying to qualify
05:47and get himself on the front row potentially.
05:52Pole will be an absolute dream.
05:54Second, third row more likely for McLaren.
05:57We've got the stopwatch on him and his teammate Lando Norris
06:00who missed a large part of FP3
06:03because they had to change the battery again in his McLaren car.
06:06And we'll see if Oscar's got the jump on his teammate in the early stages
06:10because he's had more track action this weekend.
06:12Yeah, he's been on it this weekend, Oscar.
06:14It's fun watching the car around here
06:16because look at it, it's edgy all the way around.
06:19The exit of the second dagger, the exit of the hairpin,
06:21entry into Spoon, you know, it's definitely on edge.
06:24And I think the drivers are really enjoying that.
06:26They're having to wrestle the cars around here.
06:28Oscar Piastri, fastest overall in the middle sector.
06:31Through the first sector, he was about a tenth up
06:33on his teammate Lando Norris.
06:35Lewis Hamilton was a little bit faster than both
06:37and Charles Leclerc through the first sector
06:39has gone two tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton.
06:42Managed around the final corner with Oscar Piastri.
06:44We've got the visor cam and seeing a great shot from the cockpit.
06:47He's a second clear of Esteban Ocon in the Haas.
06:51Next across the line will be Lando Norris
06:54who was on the front row this time last year
06:56and he goes P2 for the moment.
06:58A couple of tenths back on his teammate.
06:59Lewis Hamilton has lost a bit of time
07:01in the middle part of the lap.
07:03Charles Leclerc continues on his way
07:05and currently just coming out of that Spoon curve
07:08as Hamilton through the chicane
07:10four-time a pole sitter at the Japanese Grand Prix,
07:13twice here at Suzuka, twice at Fuji
07:15and goes second fastest ahead of Lando Norris
07:18behind Oscar Piastri with Charles Leclerc to come.
07:21Yeah, Charles Leclerc first sector purple.
07:23He's on a very good lap here.
07:25The lap times are falling dramatically
07:26very, very quickly on their second lap on this title.
07:29First lap for many of them.
07:31Charles Leclerc goes quickest by just over three-tenths
07:33from Oscar Piastri.
07:35The two Audis of Bortoletto and Hülkenberg
07:37are fifth and sixth confirming once again
07:39their potential
07:40and Kota Zakora is going to be presenting
07:43the Pirelli Pole Position Award
07:45at the ends of this qualifying session.
07:48Land of the Sumo, you see?
07:49They're gods here.
07:50They are.
07:51Love it.
07:52All right, Kimi into turn one.
07:54Nice wide line there on the entry
07:56and then you bring the car to the apex
07:57for the for turn two.
07:59Look at him.
08:00He's using all the kerbs through here.
08:02This is such a tricky section.
08:03You overdrive, you push it too hard,
08:05you put yourself in a bad position
08:06from turn five and six.
08:08Nicely through turn six.
08:09Keep it to the right
08:10and then a great exit
08:12and through Dunlop.
08:14Very, very good exit there.
08:15A little car on the right-hand side
08:16but that's not going to cause him an issue.
08:17And then we have Degna one.
08:19A little bit different on the entry here now
08:21because we haven't got as much clipping
08:22and then Degna two.
08:23Really smooth in the exit.
08:25Oh, he used all the kerbs there, didn't he?
08:26Would have got a little bit of bottoming.
08:28Into the hair, but don't break too hard.
08:30Don't lock that front left.
08:31Got it into the apex nicely.
08:33Traction seems to be a little bit better
08:34than we saw with Oscar Piastri there
08:36on the throttle.
08:38And now he's coming down to Spoon.
08:40Spoon is a very tricky corner on entry,
08:42especially when you have a bit of tailwind
08:43which we've had all weekend.
08:45But he seems to be really good
08:46through the first part of it.
08:47Second part nice and smooth.
08:50He looks smooth out there, doesn't he?
08:51He doesn't look like he's under pressure
08:53or overdriving.
08:54Well, he's got that pole position
08:55for a Grand Prix in the bag now.
08:58He can start enjoying himself.
09:00What a middle sector.
09:0139.9 in the middle part of the lap.
09:04Fastest we've seen so far.
09:07Wow, that is quick.
09:09A little bit of oversteer there
09:10off the second kerb.
09:11These cars are so stiff now.
09:12But good traction.
09:15And to the line
09:16puts in a time of a 1.30.035.
09:19He's only four hundredths faster
09:21than Charles Leclerc.
09:22He lost a couple of tenths
09:24to the fastest final sector time.
09:26That belongs to Max Verstappen
09:28who wishes he could have strung
09:30three really good sectors together
09:31and he'd been a lot higher.
09:32He's currently seventh fastest.
09:33I'll tell you why he didn't
09:35in a minute.
09:35George Russell only goes fifth fastest.
09:38Half a second down
09:39for George Russell.
09:40Max had a moment
09:41into turn two.
09:42Got a bit of a twitch on,
09:43got a bit of a wiggle on
09:44and lost time.
09:45About three tenths as a result
09:46in that first sector.
09:48Yeah, that cost you
09:49not just in that corner
09:50but then all the way
09:50through the S's as well.
09:52Yeah, really surprising
09:53by George Russell.
09:55I don't know if he had an issue
09:55on his lap
09:56but to be six tenths
09:57off of his teammate.
09:58I know it's only Q1
09:59and they'll get through easily
10:00but that plays on your mind.
10:02Yeah, especially when you're
10:03going for your second one
10:04in Q1.
10:05We saw last week
10:06in China,
10:08last racing weekend
10:09in China,
10:10if you have a bit of a moment
10:11and lift off
10:12it can cost you then
10:14down the straight
10:14as the kind of machine
10:16and the automation
10:17of the battery deployment
10:18has to readjust itself
10:20a little bit.
10:21That could be a reason
10:22why George Russell
10:23is half a second down.
10:24Possibly, yes.
10:25One good thing this weekend
10:26because we have less MegaJoyce
10:29that we can use in qualifying
10:30it's a driver's track.
10:32You know,
10:32you're able to push it
10:33through the corners
10:34and you're not losing out
10:35because you've been
10:36on throttle for longer.
10:37Driver's track
10:38and up steps
10:39Nico Hülkenberg
10:40one of the most experienced
10:41in the business
10:42on his 253rd start
10:44assuming he does get
10:45to start the race tomorrow
10:46puts his Audi
10:47up into the top five.
10:49Bernie Collins
10:49down on the pit wall.
10:51Yeah, I was just going to
10:52go.
10:52Team radio?
10:54We're not.
10:54Yes.
10:55Something in the field
10:56going right
10:57I've got a load
10:57of oversteer.
10:59Here you can see
10:59surface temperatures
11:00out of balance.
11:02Really odd.
11:03But this
11:05feels aerodynamical
11:06and no rear.
11:08So,
11:09is that tyre temperature
11:11affecting then
11:12the aero balance
11:13of the car, Bernie?
11:15Yeah, exactly.
11:16So when I was looking
11:17at the compare
11:18between Kimi Antonelli
11:19and George Russell
11:20it's all lost
11:21through the S's.
11:22There are points
11:22through the S's
11:23when Kimi Antonelli
11:25is over 10 kph
11:26up on George Russell.
11:28So that's where
11:29George Russell
11:29has lost the time
11:30to his teammate.
11:30It's all in that
11:31one section of the track
11:32which could be
11:33very much related
11:35to tyre temperature
11:35and that's actually
11:37the section of track
11:38that Kimi gains over
11:39both the McLaren
11:40and the Ferrari.
11:41So something to look at
11:43on Russell's car there.
11:44Absolutely.
11:44Something that could be
11:45fixed by the driver
11:46as well though JB.
11:47So,
11:48and he's got time
11:48to do it.
11:49Six minutes to go
11:49in this session
11:50as Bottas goes
11:51ahead of Sergio Perez
11:52who hasn't out
11:53qualified a teammate
11:54here since 2017
11:55and Lewis Hamilton
11:56is on the charge.
11:57He is on the charge
11:58down to the hairpin.
11:59He's very quick
12:00through the first sector.
12:01He was quickest
12:02but Charles,
12:02his teammate
12:03has just taken him
12:03taken that off
12:04in the first sector.
12:06But not to worry.
12:07Lewis,
12:07good exit
12:08of the hairpin.
12:10Flying down
12:11to Spoon.
12:13You get a little bit
12:13of clipping there
12:14but it's not much
12:14at all.
12:15Good entry.
12:16A little bit
12:16of understeering
12:17the car.
12:17Oh, a little snap
12:18on the entry
12:18there of second
12:19past Spoon.
12:20The car is edgy
12:21on the exit
12:21but he seems
12:22to be able
12:22to control it
12:22well.
12:23It's a car
12:23that Lewis
12:24seems to like
12:25to drive.
12:26An edgy car.
12:27Getting a little
12:28bit of a tow
12:28there behind
12:29Gabrielle
12:29Portoletto.
12:30Every little bit
12:31helps,
12:32especially around
12:33a track like
12:34Suzuka and into
12:35the chicane
12:35whilst his teammate
12:36Charles Leclerc
12:37about to power
12:39his way
12:39through 130R
12:41and does so
12:42very neatly
12:42indeed.
12:43Leclerc is on
12:43an absolute flyer
12:44here.
12:45Hamilton third
12:45fastest,
12:46a couple of
12:47tenths or nearly
12:47three tenths
12:48off the pace
12:49which is currently
12:49being set
12:50by Kimi Antonelli.
12:51Five and a half
12:52minutes to go.
12:53Charles Leclerc
12:54could be about
12:54to go fastest
12:55and does so
12:56by a tenth
12:57of a second
12:57from the Mercedes.
12:59Meanwhile
13:00down at the bottom
13:00because we lose
13:01the slowest six
13:02it's a bit like
13:03Noah's Ark
13:03down there
13:03two by two
13:04by two.
13:05The two Williams
13:06of Albon and Sainz
13:07who we lost
13:07in Q1 of course
13:08in China
13:09the two Cadillacs
13:10of Bottas and Perez
13:11and the two Aston Martins
13:13of Stroll
13:13and Alonso.
13:15Yeah it's pretty
13:15close down there
13:16Alpine just inside
13:18with Colopinto
13:18in 16th
13:19and Behrman
13:19in 15th
13:20they're very similar
13:21times to Albon
13:22in 17th
13:22so this last run
13:24is going to be
13:24everything.
13:25Of that bottom
13:26six only Alex
13:27Albon has managed
13:28to get out
13:28of Q1
13:29in the opening
13:30two races
13:30this season
13:31that was in
13:31Melbourne
13:32the rest
13:34have suffered
13:35early elimination
13:36in both sessions
13:37what can Fernando
13:39Alonso do
13:39to try and improve
13:41his and Honda's
13:42position
13:43at the moment
13:43he's lagging
13:44nearly half a second
13:45behind his teammate
13:46Lance Stroll
13:47so get that little
13:48bit of a lull
13:49now
13:49the cars just waiting
13:51in the garage
13:51to come out
13:52get the best conditions
13:53in this Q1 session
13:55with the track
13:55nicely rubbed in
13:56to go for one
13:57final push lap
13:58yeah
13:59they also don't want
13:59to go out now
14:00really it's difficult
14:01because you're going
14:01to be doing your
14:03fast lap
14:03when other cars
14:04are exiting the pits
14:05so they
14:05most of the time
14:06they all exit the pits
14:08very very similar
14:08that's why you see
14:09the train of cars
14:10yeah you do
14:12Bernie Collins
14:13once told me
14:13that the trouble
14:14with strategists
14:15is that we're all
14:15very like-minded people
14:17and we often make
14:17exactly the same
14:18decisions
14:19and so when you're
14:20looking for the best
14:21time to come out
14:21of the track
14:22they all come out
14:23at exactly the same
14:24time
14:24and that's exactly
14:25what's going on
14:26in the pit lane
14:27as Arvid Lindblad
14:28had to jam on the brakes
14:29so that one car passed
14:30and then one of the Williams
14:31and this is going to be
14:32the issue for Max Verstappen
14:34yeah
14:34he's coming up
14:35to start his lap
14:36and we've got
14:3621 other cars
14:38exiting the pits
14:38it seems right now
14:39so before he starts
14:40his lap
14:40quickly down to Ted
14:41so used
14:43used tyres
14:43both the Red Bulls
14:44on the tyres
14:45that they did their
14:45first run in Q1
14:46so watch out for
14:47Oli Behrman
14:48he's got to find
14:49the best part
14:49of half a second
14:50to be absolutely sure
14:52of getting out
14:52of this Q1 session
14:53we're looking around
14:54a 1.31 dead
14:56or maybe
14:56a 1.30.7
14:58as a cut off time
14:59to get into Q2
15:01around where Lindblad
15:02and Gasly are
15:03at the moment
15:03so yeah
15:04Behrman really
15:05on the cusp here
15:06they've timed it right
15:07at Red Bull
15:08Max has cleared
15:09the cars that are
15:10coming out of the pit lane
15:11some of whom
15:12might like to get
15:13a bit of a move on
15:13I know there's three
15:14minutes to go JV
15:15but there is
15:16quite the queue
15:17down there
15:17and right at the back
15:18of it will be
15:19the two McLarens
15:20yeah
15:20we've seen that
15:21you have to work
15:22the tyres pretty hard
15:23as well
15:23to get them working
15:24it's not always
15:25the first lap time
15:25oh a bit of a snap
15:26for Max through Dunlop
15:28there that's quite
15:28an unusual place
15:29to get a snap
15:30and then Degna 1
15:31the car hits the ground
15:33really hard
15:33you get a bit of understeer
15:35so that traffic
15:36in front of him there
15:37would have cost him
15:37some time
15:38I know the car
15:39pulled off the track
15:39but all the way
15:40through those Degnas
15:41he would have got
15:41a bit of dirty air
15:43Oscar Piastri
15:44is the last car
15:45to come out
15:46of the pit lane
15:47two and a half minutes
15:48to go
15:48he's still not in the queue
15:50there's about four cars
15:52ahead of him
15:52as we've watched
15:53Max Verstappen then
15:54interesting to see
15:55where this Red Bull car
15:57and where the driver
15:58deploying the extra energy
15:59from the battery pack
16:01and when they're recharging
16:03and now they'll boost
16:04out of that Spoon corner
16:06real fast acceleration
16:08onto that straight
16:09George Russell
16:10approaching Spoon
16:11on his latest run
16:13George Russell
16:14will not be eight tenths down
16:15by the time he gets
16:16to the end
16:17of the middle sector
16:17and that's pretty much
16:18where Max Verstappen
16:19is finding himself
16:20in the 129s
16:21Charles Leclerc
16:22Red Bull can only
16:24dream of that
16:24at the moment
16:25as George Russell
16:26puts in the best
16:27middle sector of all
16:28Verstappen's had
16:29a very good final sector
16:30to close that deficit
16:32somewhat
16:32and to end up
16:33six tenths behind
16:34in sixth place
16:36and Albon, Sainz
16:37and Bottas
16:38and Perez
16:38and Stroll
16:38and Alonso
16:39are all going to
16:40have to go faster
16:41to try and get out
16:42of the bottom six
16:43as Sainz
16:44starts his final
16:45flying lap
16:45and George Russell
16:46crosses the line
16:47five hundredths down
16:48on Charles Leclerc
16:50whose time
16:51is more than good
16:52enough to go through
16:53and Ferrari say
16:54stay in the pits
16:54so you don't need to come in
16:55he's safe
16:56I think for George
16:57he probably wanted
16:58to just make sure
16:58the car felt good
16:59before Q2
17:00get a bit more confidence
17:01in himself
17:03surprising right
17:04surprising to see
17:05a Ferrari
17:05P1 at the moment
17:06yeah
17:0766 races now
17:08Charles Leclerc
17:09without a Q1
17:10elimination
17:11it's the longest streak
17:12on the grid
17:13and shows the consistency
17:14that he's put together
17:15in terms of
17:16getting out of Q1
17:17getting then
17:18into Q2
17:19and onwards
17:20for what
17:21pole positions
17:22for Charles Leclerc
17:2327th in his career
17:24Alex Albon
17:25would dearly love
17:26a record like that
17:27he'd certainly like
17:28the car
17:28like the Ferrari
17:29as well
17:29but Williams
17:30is a different beast
17:31to handle
17:31but at the moment
17:32he's a tenth and a half up
17:33through the first sector
17:35on a time he needs
17:35to get out of that
17:36bottom six
17:37that was very wide
17:38through Degna too
17:39but just on the line
17:40I think
17:41yeah I think
17:41he was okay there
17:42he's a tenth up
17:43on his teammate
17:44who's right behind him
17:45in 17th
17:47in 18th
17:47sorry
17:47so that's important
17:49for him
17:49he's just got to
17:49make sure that stays
17:50if he's got any chance
17:52getting into the top 15
17:5330 seconds to go
17:54Oli Behrman's just
17:55crossed the line
17:56to start his lap
17:57Colopinto
17:58has just crossed the line
18:00Perez of Bottas next
18:02and Piastri should
18:03just make it
18:04as Alex Albon
18:05makes his way
18:06along that back straight
18:08with the active aero
18:09reducing the drag
18:11and into 130 yards
18:12Carlos Sainz
18:13who gone a bit earlier
18:14moves up into 13th
18:15and that is on the cusp
18:17a little bit
18:17if others can improve
18:19behind
18:20luckily for him
18:21he stays ahead
18:22so he's now behind
18:24Esteban Ocon
18:25who's just across the line
18:2612 one thousandths
18:27of a second
18:28the difference between those
18:29Albon goes 16th
18:31that pushes Oli Behrman
18:32down into that bottom six
18:34but he is right
18:35on the cusp
18:37he really is
18:38Lawson takes the check
18:39of flag
18:408th fastest
18:41Oli Behrman is
18:42I think he's out
18:44qualified
18:45looking at his tyres
18:46there
18:46he's just crossed the line
18:47he could have gone
18:48for another lap
18:49but the tyres just
18:50aren't there
18:50for him
18:51and his first sector
18:52is not good
18:53Behrman's out
18:54Alonso's definitely out
18:56because he's only just
18:56beaten his teammate
18:57Jensen
18:57Colopinto looks like
18:59he's the only person
18:59that can challenge
19:00Alex Albon
19:01for that 16th position
19:0332-6 in the first sector
19:04is very good
19:05as Portoleto goes
19:076th fastest
19:087th fastest
19:08behind his teammate
19:09Nico Hülkenberg
19:11we're on board now
19:12with Valtteri Bottas
19:14third on the grid
19:15here in 2019
19:16second on the grid
19:17here in 2018
19:18at the moment
19:20down in P20
19:21as Pierre Gasly
19:22goes 10th fastest
19:24just behind
19:24his former teammate
19:25Max Verstappen
19:26and Oscar Piastri
19:27puts in the fastest
19:28middle sector
19:29Alex Albon
19:30is out of qualifying
19:31Colopinto
19:32has beaten him
19:33not by much
19:34but by enough
19:35Bottas to the line
19:36stays
19:37P20
19:38and Sergio Perez
19:39is going to out
19:40qualify a teammate
19:41here for the first time
19:42since 2017
19:43as Oscar Piastri
19:44goes fourth fastest
19:46so
19:47some crumb of comfort
19:48there
19:48for Sergio Perez
19:50and it's kind of
19:51as expected
19:52except
19:53for Oli Behrman
19:55that's the big shock
19:56from the first part
19:57of qualifying
19:58yeah it is
19:58he's been so
19:59consistently good
20:00in qualifying
20:01and surprised
20:03that he's out
20:04in Q1
20:04but sometimes
20:05it just doesn't
20:06go your way
20:06it certainly doesn't
20:08the stewards
20:09are going to take
20:09a look at
20:10Carlos Sainz
20:11for impeding
20:12Isaac Hadjar
20:13Sainz did get
20:14for the first time
20:15this season
20:16into Q2
20:17and Oli Behrman
20:19who's qualified
20:2012th and 10th
20:21for the opening
20:22two Grand Prix
20:22of the season
20:23and has scored points
20:24in all three times
20:25we've gone racing
20:25is going to have to
20:26do it the hard way
20:27from P18
20:28here at Suzuka
20:29that's the big shock
20:31from the first part
20:32of qualifying
20:33less of a shock
20:34the two Aston Martins
20:35right at the back
20:36Lance Stroll
20:37and Fernando Alonso
20:38the two Cadillacs ahead
20:40Valtteri Bottas
20:40and Sergio Perez
20:41Alex Albon
20:42joins the six
20:43making their exit
20:55where was I still
20:56to Carlos
20:57you probably don't want to know
21:00but you can probably guess
21:01yes
21:04I complained
21:06for three reasons
21:07that there's something wrong
21:08but
21:09I'm sure it's my
21:10drive to zero
21:16very cryptic
21:17from Alex Albon
21:18be interesting
21:19to hear what
21:20he's got to say
21:20when he speaks
21:21to Rachel Brooks
21:21in the
21:23interview pen
21:24in a few moments
21:25time
21:25and whether he's got
21:26a few more answers
21:27for us on that one
21:28Bernie Collins
21:29Ollie Behrman
21:30who got into Q3
21:31here at Suzuka
21:32last year
21:33out
21:34P18 this year
21:35go any answers
21:36as to why that might be
21:38yeah exactly
21:39it's all tight margins
21:40isn't it
21:40in the Q1 session
21:41but when I look
21:42at the overlay
21:43between Ollie Behrman
21:44and Esteban Ocon
21:45obviously the same car
21:46all of the time lost
21:48is in through
21:49turn six and seven
21:50so the final
21:51of that S section
21:52three tenths
21:54just from
21:54two corners
21:55and that's enough
21:57that he's out
21:58of Q1
21:58so that's what
21:59they'll be looking at
22:00versus teammate
22:00he was actually
22:01better through
22:02the initial bit
22:03of the S's
22:03but then just
22:04in that final bit
22:05lost a lot of time
22:07to his teammate
22:07and that's enough
22:08to put him out
22:08of the session
22:09and a tenth of a second
22:10between Esteban Ocon
22:11Carlos Sainz
22:12Franco Colopinto
22:13Alex Albon
22:15and Ollie Behrman
22:16the last two
22:16making their exit
22:18from it
22:18very very tight
22:20and I think
22:20Jensen it's going
22:21to be very tight
22:22for some cars
22:23getting into Q3
22:24yeah I totally agree
22:26it's very close
22:27I think as you said
22:28maybe the Mercedes
22:29will have a little
22:30advantage in Q2
22:31but everyone else
22:32is really close behind
22:33you look at Max Verstappen
22:34down in P9
22:36in Q1
22:36so Max Verstappen
22:38with a 1.3519
22:40ahead of
22:41Gasly
22:42with a 1.3584
22:43and Liam Lawson
22:45with a 1.3657
22:47and then Isaac Hadjar
22:48who was
22:49five thousandths of a second
22:50slower than Liam Lawson
22:51there really isn't much
22:53on that sort of form
22:54between those cars
22:56so one slight error
22:58Verstappen can find
22:59himself you know
22:59not getting through
23:01into Q3
23:02at the expense
23:03of a Lawson
23:04or his teammate
23:05Isaac Hadjar
23:06let's see
23:07as the light goes green
23:08and we get going
23:10once again
23:10and who comes out
23:11first
23:12it'll be the two Mercedes
23:13Kimi Antonelli
23:14and George Russell
23:15followed by the two
23:16Ferraris
23:18Lewis Hamilton
23:19and Charles Leclerc
23:21it's actually amazing
23:22as well
23:23the times
23:23with the new regulation
23:24change
23:25to have the times
23:25that close
23:26the top 15
23:27it's really impressive
23:29it shows how competitive
23:30Formula 1 is at the moment
23:33so the Ferraris coming out
23:35and the Mercedes
23:36out on track
23:37before the rest
23:37all appear
23:38Bernie Collins
23:39has been digging
23:39into the data
23:40to solve the
23:41Alex Albon
23:42cryptic clues
23:43it sits like a
23:44newspaper crossword
23:45Bernie
23:45five down
23:47why was he slow
23:48exactly
23:49all on the streets
23:50and that's why
23:51he got the cryptic message
23:52to say
23:53I'm sure it was my driving
23:54because
23:54as we all know
23:56there's not lots
23:56a driver can do
23:57on the street
23:58except to have his right foot
23:59as far down as possible
24:00but that is
24:02on both the main street
24:03and the back street
24:05where he's losing time
24:06to Carlos Sainz
24:07so that's why
24:07he's so unhappy
24:08you think he's just
24:09sat a bit too far back
24:10for the pedal
24:10that can't get the
24:11flat to the floor
24:12I'm sure he's a bit more
24:13with that
24:13yeah he needs to
24:15duck down
24:16a little bit more
24:18yeah it is frustrating
24:19when you do everything
24:21you can
24:21and then you look
24:22at the data after
24:23and you've lost
24:23all the time
24:24in a straight line
24:25some of it can be exits
24:27but obviously
24:28I'm sure it's not the case
24:30Lewis Hamilton
24:31comfortable with this car
24:32happier certainly
24:33at Ferrari
24:34this season
24:35and the recipient
24:36of a podium
24:37as a Ferrari driver
24:39for the first time
24:40in the race won
24:42by this man
24:42Kimi Antonelli
24:43last time out
24:44in Shanghai
24:45Jensen
24:46take us through
24:47his latest flying lap
24:48yeah so cross the start
24:50and finish line
24:51we're on the left
24:54coming into turn one
24:55they do get a little bit
24:56of clipping
24:56before the first corner here
24:58which is kind of nice
24:59because it backs off the car
25:00and you can carry the speed
25:01through there
25:01turn two
25:02nicely through
25:03using all the curb
25:04on the exit
25:05turn two
25:06three and four
25:07he's up the snake
25:08or the S's
25:09as we call it
25:09and then he's through six
25:11keep the car to the right
25:12for turn seven
25:13my son would love
25:14that section six seven
25:16Dunlop
25:17such a such a great corner
25:18when you when you get it
25:19right
25:20there's a little bump
25:21at the exit
25:21and it just unsettles
25:23the rear a little bit
25:23Degna one
25:24nice and smooth
25:25Degna two
25:26good exit there
25:27he's not using all the track
25:28he's very
25:29he's driving very
25:30within himself
25:31at this point
25:32nice entry
25:33into the hairpin
25:35running
25:36I'm not using all the track
25:37at all on the exit
25:38traction seems to be
25:39very good as well
25:40the car is really
25:41underneath him
25:42it feels like he can do
25:43whatever he wants with it
25:45he can put it where he wants
25:46change the direction
25:47is really good
25:48he can drive it smoothly
25:50it's working really well for him
25:52good exit there
25:53ran really wide there
25:54get the power down
25:55that thousand horsepower
25:57the torque
25:58the power
25:58it goes through the roof
26:00and the speeds
26:00that they're able to achieve
26:01is just phenomenal
26:03into 1.30 R we go
26:0639.7
26:07for the middle sector
26:09he's about two tenths
26:10up on his teammate
26:11George Russell
26:12through the first
26:12two thirds of the lap
26:13Hamilton was a couple
26:14of tenths up on Antonelli
26:15through the first part
26:17of the lap
26:17the 19 year old Italian
26:19with a 1.29.7
26:20three tenths faster
26:21than he managed
26:22for a quickest time
26:23in Q1
26:24George Russell
26:25will be next
26:25to cross the line
26:26as has been the case
26:28for much of this weekend
26:29he's two
26:30three tenths behind
26:31three tenths
26:31on this occasion
26:32by the way
26:33can't believe you got
26:34a 6.7 reference in
26:35that was very impressive
26:37Jenson Button
26:38and shouldn't go unnoticed
26:39Hamilton crosses the line
26:41third fastest for him
26:43I think George's time
26:45was mostly lost
26:45coming out the last corner
26:46that massive snap
26:47of oversteer
26:48which really cost him
26:49a couple of tenths
26:50and they're all on used tires
26:51the Mercedes
26:52and the Ferraris
26:53as well for him
26:53Charles Leclerc
26:54has just gone
26:55within a tenth of a second
26:57of Kimi Antonelli
26:58as Max Verstappen
26:59fifth fastest
27:00or slowest
27:01of the five times
27:02that we've got
27:03so far
27:04so used tires
27:05for the top four
27:07given their pace
27:08advantage over the rest
27:09Hadjar goes ahead
27:10of Max Verstappen
27:12yet one of those drivers
27:13that should they improve
27:14by a tenth or so
27:15could put Max
27:16at danger here
27:17with getting into Q3
27:19and George Russell
27:19still struggling
27:20with the rear of his car
27:22yeah he's hoping
27:22that the track
27:23comes to him
27:24otherwise
27:24you know
27:25you've got a few tools
27:26that you can play with
27:27to try and help
27:27the rear end of the car
27:28but it's not giving him
27:30any confidence right now
27:31and you know
27:31the first sector
27:32of the lap
27:32is where he's been
27:33so strong
27:34through the S's
27:34but not so much
27:35today
27:36we've got a camera
27:38on Gabriel Bortoletto
27:40approaching Spoon
27:41and we also watch
27:41Arvid Lindblad
27:42to the line
27:44and go seventh fastest
27:45so
27:48slowest of the time
27:49so far
27:49under a second
27:51though
27:51behind
27:51Kimi Antonelli
27:53so the racing bulls
27:54are getting a bit closer
27:55than they've been so far
27:56he's quickly replaced
27:57by Nico Hülkenberg
27:59he's put the best
28:00final sector in
28:01yeah
28:01very very quick
28:03we now have the McLarens
28:04coming
28:04on new tyres
28:06so it'll be interesting
28:07to see what they can do
28:08great for a sector
28:09by Oscar Piastri
28:1032.1
28:10quickest of all
28:11but has he used
28:13a bit too much
28:14of his battery
28:15his energy allowance
28:16in that first part
28:17of the lap
28:18Gabriel Bortoletto
28:19goes third fastest
28:20new tyres
28:21against used tyres
28:22I think helping
28:23Gabriel Bortoletto
28:24still
28:25that's a very
28:26very impressive
28:27performance
28:28from him
28:29we're watching
28:30Lando Norris
28:30the defending champion
28:31and his team mate
28:33Oscar Piastri
28:34as Carlo Pinto
28:34goes tenth fastest
28:36he hasn't had
28:37a Q3 appearance
28:38it's Azerbaijan
28:38in 2024
28:40Piastri though
28:42absolutely flying
28:43new tyres
28:43for the McLarens
28:45Gasly
28:45goes sixth fastest
28:47ahead of
28:47Isaac Hadjar
28:48Max Verstappen
28:49down in P8
28:50and Esteban Ocon
28:51now into the top
28:52ten for the one
28:53remaining Haas
28:54Piastri crosses
28:54the line
28:55goes quickest
28:55by three tenths
28:57of a second
28:57looks on paper
28:58really impressive
28:59but it's new tyres
29:01against old tyres
29:02is that a pace
29:03a genuine pace
29:04that McLaren have got
29:05or will they get
29:06reeled in
29:07when they're all
29:07on the new tyres
29:08a bit later on
29:09either way
29:10Oscar Piastri
29:11still has a margin
29:13over his teammate
29:13Lando Norris
29:14yeah good margin
29:15almost three and a half
29:16tenths
29:18it's also
29:18just track time
29:19I still think
29:20it's track time
29:21for Lando
29:21he's lacking it
29:22a little bit
29:23we'll see him
29:23get closer
29:24I think
29:24through qualifying
29:25but I do think
29:26the McLarens
29:26will drop back
29:27a little bit
29:28once Kimi
29:29and Charles
29:29get their
29:30new boots on
29:31this point
29:32in qualifying
29:33it's all about
29:34small margins
29:35and new tyres
29:36can make quite a bit
29:37so the margin
29:39from first
29:40to 15th
29:41first to 16th
29:42even
29:42129.4
29:44for Piastri
29:44and 131
29:45for Carlos Sainz
29:47so a second
29:48between the 16 times
29:49you said George Russell
29:51two seconds
29:52sorry
29:52between the time
29:53you said George Russell
29:54out of the last corner
29:55could be right there
29:57losing a lot of his time
29:59pretty big isn't he
30:00took a lot of kerb
30:00first apex
30:01second apex
30:02yeah big drift
30:03of oversteer there
30:05certainly not helping him
30:06and as he says
30:08still struggling
30:09with the rear
30:10of his car
30:11so that's how it looks
30:13after the first runs
30:14in Q2
30:15we obviously have lost
30:16six drivers already
30:17one of whom is Alex Albon
30:19he's speaking
30:19now to Rachel Brooks
30:23hi Alex
30:24I have to ask you
30:25about the radio message
30:26and what you
30:28I can tell you
30:29exactly if you like
30:30but you said
30:31I complained
30:32for three races in a row
30:33there's something wrong
30:33but I'm sure
30:34it's my driving style
30:35just tell me
30:36what you're experiencing
30:36in the car
30:37and does it feel
30:39like it's the car
30:39or do you think
30:40it's you
30:41I'm not going to
30:41talk about it
30:43we'll have a look
30:44at the data
30:44but I'm happy
30:46with my driving
30:47so I think
30:49there's obviously
30:49a bit of a quirk
30:50with these cars
30:51but yeah
30:53some answers still
30:54question marks still
30:55that we need to figure out
30:57you know I've done
30:58this for a long time
30:59and I know drivers
30:59come in and sometimes
31:00it's a thing like
31:01a chassis change
31:02or there's something
31:02that either gives
31:03them confidence
31:04or actually is a problem
31:06do you think it's
31:06something as
31:07fundamental as that
31:09or have you got
31:09any other answers
31:10we're good in every corner
31:11so yeah
31:12we'll see
31:14you have no idea
31:15where it can come from
31:16no
31:17well thanks Alex
31:19come on Alex
31:21don't give us
31:21I don't want to talk about it
31:22you can talk about it
31:23on the radio
31:24yeah why do it on the radio
31:26don't tease us
31:27yeah it's very frustrating
31:29because you've got that
31:30adrenaline when you
31:31when you first step out
31:32of the car
31:33or when you're still
31:33in the car
31:34after qualifying
31:35and then when you've
31:35calmed down
31:36you've realised
31:36oh maybe I shouldn't
31:38have said that
31:38because I am a team
31:39player
31:40yes
31:42right
31:44on board once again
31:45with the Mercedes
31:46this time
31:47it's George Russell
31:48so let's see
31:49how
31:50where
31:51when he is struggling
31:52with the rears
31:53of that car
31:55and he's got the track
31:56pretty much to himself
31:58now
31:58there's not a single
32:00other person
32:00ahead of him
32:01only two Ferraris
32:03behind him
32:04yeah I think
32:05it's always very
32:06difficult to see
32:07the oversteer issues
32:08because he's driving
32:08within it now
32:09if he feels
32:10the rear is weak
32:11he is just not
32:12carrying the speed
32:12that he would like
32:13to be carrying
32:14it looks very calm
32:15through
32:16you know
32:17through Dunlop
32:18Degna 1
32:21Degna 2
32:21looks nice
32:22it looks very
32:23very similar
32:24to what we saw
32:25Kimi on the previous run
32:26had a good flow to it
32:27helped I think
32:28by the fact
32:28he's now on
32:29new tyres
32:30that gives you
32:31that extra
32:32grip
32:32you know
32:33it's like a
32:34completely different
32:34ball game
32:35yeah he did have
32:36a little bit of
32:36rear movement
32:37on the entry
32:38of the hairpin
32:38there
32:38that might be
32:39what he's talking
32:39about
32:39it's just not
32:40not quite there
32:41for him
32:42the rear end
32:42and this time
32:43two weeks ago
32:44of course
32:44things started
32:45to unravel
32:46just at the start
32:47of Q3
32:47where his front wing
32:50got damaged
32:52and in the end
32:53Kimi Antonelli
32:54also driving
32:55with a broken
32:56front wing
32:57managed to take
32:57pole position
32:58George Russell
32:59was looking
33:00at absolute
33:00certainty
33:00for it
33:01halfway through
33:02the qualifying
33:03session
33:0339.7 is good
33:05for the middle
33:07sector
33:07he's right
33:07at touching
33:08distance here
33:08of the time
33:09he needs
33:10to go fastest
33:10overall
33:11so let's see
33:12it was a
33:13130.1
33:14he's lost time
33:15in that final
33:16sector once again
33:18he ends up
33:19three tenths down
33:20on Oscar Piastri
33:21and he's on new
33:22tyres
33:23and he's on new
33:23tyres
33:23that is not
33:24what we expected
33:25at all
33:25so is this now
33:26a bit more
33:26concerning
33:27that there's
33:28something wrong
33:28with the rear
33:29because you need
33:29a stable rear
33:30under braking
33:31and acceleration
33:32out of that
33:33chicane
33:33exactly
33:34it's such a
33:34short part
33:35of the lap
33:36that last
33:36sector
33:36and he's lost
33:37three tenths
33:38to Oscar
33:39maybe the deployment
33:40is a little bit
33:40different for the
33:41Mercedes rather than
33:42the McLaren
33:42but that last
33:43section does not
33:44look good for
33:45George Russell
33:46I'd like to see
33:47a slow motion
33:48of him coming out
33:49of the final few
33:50corners
33:50on board with
33:51Lewis Hamilton
33:52Charles Leclerc out
33:53on track
33:54as we mentioned
33:54and well
33:56looking here
33:57at where the
33:57stories might be
33:58in the next
33:59four minutes
33:59Red Bull
34:00Max Verstappen
34:01right on the
34:02cusp
34:02Ted Kravitz
34:03of either
34:04making it to
34:05the final ten
34:06or putting his
34:07feet up early
34:07and they've had
34:08to throw another
34:09set of soft tyres
34:10at the car
34:11both for
34:12Hatchar
34:12and for Verstappen
34:13but they're on
34:14new soft tyres
34:15for the first run
34:16weren't they
34:16in this Q2
34:17so that's pretty much
34:18all the car has got
34:19unless they can
34:20actually pull something
34:21out on this final run
34:22Nico Alkenberg
34:23just holding up
34:25the pack a little bit
34:25making it a little
34:27bit difficult
34:27for Lindblad
34:28and Sainz
34:29to get in
34:29but Sainz
34:30on his way
34:31clearly Sainz
34:32isn't having
34:32the problems
34:32maybe it's
34:33with the deployment
34:34that Albon
34:35seems to be having
34:35in the other Williams
34:36thanks ever so much
34:37Ted
34:3831-7
34:39for the first sector
34:40for Charles Leclerc
34:41that is very rapid
34:44indeed
34:44Ferrari
34:46really taking the fight
34:47at this moment
34:48not just to Oscar
34:49Piafri
34:50but to the two
34:50Mercedes as well
34:51of Russell
34:52and Antonelli
34:53Antonelli
34:53with a soft tyre
34:55new soft tyre
34:56run to come
34:56and Lewis Hamilton
34:59down in six
35:00not getting the speed
35:01that his teammate
35:02is finding
35:03as Leclerc
35:04goes fastest
35:05wow that's
35:06that's an impressive
35:07lap
35:08we can't go
35:08we can't lose
35:10this much pace
35:11we can't have a look
35:12for everything
35:13yeah he's asking
35:14his team
35:14dive into the data
35:16here
35:16because it's not
35:17me that's doing it
35:18something's wrong
35:19with the car
35:20yeah and they
35:20believe in him
35:21I'm sure they do
35:22you know
35:22he's very straightforward
35:23George
35:24he always maximises
35:25the car
35:26and he's not finding
35:27that grip
35:28from the rear end
35:28so as we said
35:30Max Verstappen
35:31unbeaten in qualifying
35:32and the race here
35:33since 2019
35:36and that car
35:37looks so different
35:39to an Antonelli
35:41or a Leclerc
35:42or a Piastri
35:43going through the S's
35:44and he's constantly
35:45Jensen
35:45having to make
35:46adjustments
35:47because it's just
35:48not pointing
35:48the way he wants it to
35:50yeah it's so edgy
35:50exit turn two
35:51he ran all over the
35:52curve which was
35:53a big oversteer
35:54which would have
35:55cost him a lot of time
35:55and yeah it looks
35:57very edgy
35:57looks very pointy
35:58the car
35:58he was struggling
35:59with understeer
36:00for most of this weekend
36:01but the car
36:02doesn't look like
36:03it's struggling
36:03with the front anymore
36:04it looks more like
36:05the rear
36:05he wanted to dial
36:06more front in
36:07to give him that
36:09that extra grip
36:10as he turns in
36:12and that was
36:13from FP3
36:14a little bit earlier on
36:16Piastri and Norris
36:17not improving
36:18on this lap so far
36:19I dare say
36:21they are comfortably
36:21through
36:22in the positions
36:23and the times
36:24that they have
36:25on the board
36:26Lewis Hamilton
36:26saying on the radio
36:27that he's got traffic
36:28and he's kind of
36:29in a position
36:29he doesn't want to be
36:30as he might go again
36:31for another lap
36:33but here comes
36:33Verstappen then
36:34into the final chicane
36:38not as bad
36:39to be honest
36:40through there
36:41gets to the line
36:42but only goes
36:43ninth fastest
36:45Verstappen's right
36:45on the cusp here
36:46because improving
36:47behind him
36:48is Nico Hülkenberg
36:49improving behind him
36:50is Isaac Hadjar
36:51Hadjar goes up
36:53into eighth place
36:54now this is looking
36:56worrying
36:56if you're a Max
36:57Verstappen fan
36:58that he might not
36:58make it
36:59through into Q3
37:00Norwich is already
37:01ahead
37:02he crosses the line
37:03doesn't improve
37:03Piastri I think
37:04his teammate
37:05is going to do
37:05exactly the same
37:06thing in a few
37:07moments time
37:08as Charles Leclerc
37:09Lewis Hamilton
37:10starts another lap
37:11Piastri second
37:12fastest
37:13but that lap
37:13wasn't the one
37:15so maybe
37:15he can go again
37:17projected cutoff
37:18time
37:18at 1.30.1
37:19I think the only one
37:21that really has
37:21a good opportunity
37:22to push Max out
37:24is Nico Hülkenberg
37:25yeah
37:25Linblad though
37:26through the first sector
37:28has put in a personal
37:29best
37:29at 32.5
37:30but he probably
37:31got about 3 tenths
37:32to make up
37:32Hülkenberg stays
37:33down in P12
37:35lost it all
37:36in the final sector
37:37that might save
37:38Max Verstappen
37:39for the time being
37:40as Colopinto
37:41goes ahead
37:42of Arvid Linblad
37:43who's still out
37:44on track
37:45what happened to
37:45Nico Hülkenberg
37:46in the final sector
37:47his teammate
37:48Gabriel Vortoletto
37:49puts in the fastest
37:50final sector time
37:524 tenths quicker
37:53than Nico Hülkenberg
37:54what a lap
37:55Vortoletto
37:55and what a lap
37:56from Arvid Linblad
37:57who's not Max Verstappen
37:59out of the top 10
38:01Arvid Linblad
38:02on his first trip
38:03to Suzuka
38:04in his rookie year
38:05in Formula 1
38:06is currently
38:07in Q3
38:09wow
38:10wow
38:10what a wonderful lap
38:11I would love to see
38:12that lap
38:13hopefully we get to see
38:13a replay
38:14very impressive
38:15he might not stay
38:16in Q3
38:17his teammate
38:18Liam Lawson
38:18has crossed the line
38:19and has gone P14
38:21oh it's all happening
38:23out there
38:23as Kimi Antonelli
38:24right at the end here
38:26thinks you know what
38:27Charles Leclerc
38:28you've done okay
38:29I quite like the fastest
38:30time
38:30there you go
38:31by 2.5 tenths
38:32Antonelli is back
38:34as the quickest driver
38:35it's Mercedes on top
38:37Lewis Hamilton
38:38on the P4
38:40behind Oscar Piastri
38:41behind Charles Leclerc
38:43ahead of George Russell
38:44who's having problems
38:45but the man who's
38:46suffered the most problems
38:47really
38:48is Max Verstappen
38:49I think something
38:51works for the car
38:51made this
38:52completely unrugged
38:53well suddenly
38:54it is qualified
38:54jumping on high speed
38:57on the rear suddenly
39:00four consecutive
39:01pole positions
39:02here at Suzuka
39:04and today
39:05in the words
39:06of Max Verstappen
39:06the car
39:07is undrivable
39:08he's out
39:09joined
39:10in the elimination
39:11zone
39:11by Esteban Ocon
39:12Nico Hülkenberg
39:14who had it all to play
39:14for
39:15until the final sector
39:16Liam Lawson
39:18Franco Colapinto
39:19and Carlos Sainz
39:29Max Verstappen
39:30getting knocked out
39:30was the biggest story
39:31of that part of qualifying
39:33let's take a look
39:34at his lap
39:34and try and understand
39:35just where it went wrong
39:37he said it was jumping
39:37around in high speed
39:38watch his head there
39:40as he goes through
39:40turn one
39:41lots of understeer
39:43struggling then
39:44which had snaps
39:44to an oversteer
39:45let's go through
39:46the S's
39:47and he's just waiting
39:47on the front
39:48he's having to wait
39:49for a long time
39:50then it's
39:51eventually bites
39:52this is almost
39:53like a disconnect
39:54where he's just not
39:56able to get
39:56the front and rear
39:57of the car
39:58talking to each other
39:59as we come through
40:00six
40:01again just see-sawing
40:02in the wheel
40:03the car not a comfortable
40:04ride through there
40:06climbing uphill
40:07to the Degner
40:08that car getting
40:09nicely out of the way
40:09on the right
40:10as he comes through
40:12into Degner
40:13to this bit looks okay
40:15you know he's able
40:16to at least stay online
40:17and stay where he wants
40:18but he's lost so much
40:20time through the S's
40:21already
40:22into the hairpin
40:24takes a wider line
40:25again a little bit
40:26of a hesitation
40:27a little bit more
40:28you know waiting time
40:30with that understeer
40:31through that corner
40:32there
40:32and let's take a look
40:33up at Spoon Curve
40:34listen in here
40:35as he goes into it
40:36there
40:37look at that
40:38huge snap
40:39so I'll just pick it
40:41up there again
40:41and I'll slow it down
40:43watch
40:43as he turns in
40:45so he goes in
40:46carrying the speed
40:48that he believes
40:48and there look
40:49the rear of the car
40:50steps out of the line
40:51has to correct it
40:52then he's just waiting
40:53because he's gone in
40:54too fast
40:54and he's now on this
40:56curb
40:56and all of that
40:57means he's not in
40:59the right position
41:00he wants
41:00for the second part
41:01has to have another
41:02correction there
41:03for the second apex
41:04and you just compromise
41:06not only the speed
41:08and therefore lap time
41:09through Spoon
41:10but also this run
41:11all the way up
41:12to 130R
41:13so really frustrating
41:15time for Max
41:15in the high speed
41:16corners
41:17comes through
41:18130R
41:19bring the car back
41:20to the left hand side
41:22and in here
41:23it was okay
41:23through the chicane
41:24you know
41:25not too bad
41:26through there
41:26gets over the curb
41:27traction's fine
41:27but he's just lost
41:29as he said on the radio
41:30so much time
41:31I think through
41:31the S's and Spoon
41:32and the high speed stuff
41:33he had no chance
41:35of getting himself
41:36into that top 10
41:37back to you Crofty
41:51so where Max Verstappen
41:54misses out
41:54someone has to get in
41:56and it was
41:56Arvid Lindblad
41:57for his second
41:58Q3 appearance
41:59in 3 Grand Prix
42:01as a rookie
42:02wow
42:03you know when it's
42:04a good lap
42:04that was lovely
42:06to hear the excitement
42:07the adrenaline
42:08that he got
42:09from that lap
42:10fair play to him
42:11fair play to Pierre Gasly
42:12as well
42:13another stonking lap
42:14from him
42:14whilst his teammate
42:15Franco Colopinto
42:16was second slowest
42:18in Q2
42:18Gasly had the
42:20seventh fastest time
42:21what of George Russell
42:24going into this
42:25qualifying session
42:26you know
42:26we're sat in the
42:27commentary box
42:28thinking
42:28well it's this man
42:29Kimi Antonelli
42:30or is his teammate
42:31George Russell
42:31they're the ones
42:32that have the advantage
42:33and George is
42:34struggling out there
42:35it's not normal
42:36I mean he's six tenths
42:37down
42:37that's not George Russell
42:38so there has to be
42:40an issue with the car
42:41or the car's not
42:42working to his liking
42:43obviously it's changed
42:44a little bit
42:45it's cooler out there
42:46you said there's less
42:47wind
42:47Max is also feeling
42:49that the car doesn't
42:50feel right underneath him
42:51so I don't know
42:52maybe it's a temperature
42:53thing
42:55Mercedes so far
42:57this year
42:57have been one
42:58two in every
42:59qualifying session
43:00for a Grand Prix
43:01or for a sprint
43:03from the outside
43:04that could be in danger
43:06that record this
43:07afternoon
43:07Bernie Collins
43:08has got the data
43:09in front of her
43:10to give us a few
43:11pointers
43:12yes thankfully
43:13Crofty have got
43:14access to it
43:15on this pit wall
43:15but through the
43:16high speed section
43:17all of that
43:18George Russell
43:19is down significantly
43:20on speed
43:21around 10 kph
43:23through all of that
43:24the S's
43:25compared to Kimi
43:26Antonelli
43:26and then in most
43:27of the corners
43:28he loses as well
43:29significantly
43:30out of the final
43:32corner
43:32and then loses
43:33the entire way
43:35down the straight
43:35because Kimi's
43:37faster in that
43:37final corner
43:38only a few kph
43:395 kph
43:40but then he's able
43:41to get on throttle
43:42earlier as well
43:43and then benefits
43:43the whole way
43:44down the straight
43:45and that is
43:46a few of the areas
43:47where George
43:48seems to be losing
43:49but mainly
43:49in cornering
43:50which matches
43:51what he says
43:52with the rear
43:53of the car
43:53yeah 10 km an hour
43:54through the S's
43:56is not right
43:56you know that's
43:57not him not
43:58driving fast enough
43:59it's like he just
44:00has less downfalls
44:03I don't know
44:04if the set up
44:04is completely the
44:05same or different
44:06we'll talk to
44:07George after this
44:08session
44:09and the green
44:10light is on
44:11so here we go
44:12ladies and gentlemen
44:13for the battle
44:14for pole
44:15and for the first
44:16time
44:16since 2019
44:18it's a battle
44:19for pole
44:19that won't be won
44:20by Max Verstappen
44:21because he's not in it
44:22his teammate
44:23Isaac Hadjar is
44:24the one remaining
44:25red ball
44:25left in this session
44:27Kimi Antonelli
44:28can he make it
44:29two poles
44:29for two Grand Prix's
44:30in a row
44:31Charles Leclerc
44:32and Lewis Hamilton
44:34for Ferrari
44:35is there a pole position
44:36in the prancing horse
44:38this afternoon
44:39Lando Norris
44:40and Oscar Piastri
44:41can McLaren
44:42find a smile
44:44and a sunnier
44:45disposition
44:45after some of their
44:46struggles
44:47struggles
44:47so far
44:48this weekend
44:48Gabriel Bortoleta
44:49what can he do
44:50for Audi
44:50Gasly
44:51for Alpine
44:52and Limblad
44:53for a second
44:54Q3 session
44:55of the season
44:57for him
44:57he was 19 years old
44:59in 201
45:00day when he won
45:02qualifying in Shanghai
45:03last time out
45:04here's Kimi Antonelli
45:05through the 3.6 miles
45:07now
45:07yeah
45:08it's
45:08for him at the moment
45:10he's going to be
45:10just full of confidence
45:12after every single session
45:14he's had this weekend
45:15he's just been on it
45:16he did look like he had
45:17a little bit of oversteer
45:18through turn 6 there
45:20which would have hurt him
45:21a little bit
45:21but
45:23he looks good
45:24into Degna
45:25looks nice and smooth
45:27you can just see
45:28in the way he's driving
45:29as I said before
45:30he's not overdriving
45:31he's driving within himself
45:33and I think a lot of that
45:34confidence comes from
45:35being a race winner now
45:36he's so young still
45:38it's crazy to think
45:39how young
45:40Kimi Antonelli is
45:41and he's so composed
45:43now interesting
45:45through the S's
45:46on this lap
45:46George Russell
45:47much better
45:48and a fraction
45:49of a second
45:50faster
45:51than Kimi Antonelli
45:53Gasly
45:53about 7 tenths down
45:55Bortoletto
45:558 tenths down
45:56I dare say
45:56they're on the
45:57used tyre
45:58and haven't got
45:59two sets of soft
46:00for this run
46:01Isaac Hadjar
46:02eventually
46:03gets out of the way
46:04and that was
46:05last minute
46:06as Kimi Antonelli
46:06was trying to
46:07get a bit of a toe
46:0839.4
46:10for the Italian driver
46:11through the middle sector
46:12and he's picked up
46:13two tenths
46:14on his teammate
46:14George Russell
46:15through that middle
46:16part of the lap
46:17that didn't look
46:17too steady
46:18coming around
46:19the final corner
46:20takes the shortest
46:20route to the line
46:21we're into the 128s
46:23for provisional pole
46:25chase that one
46:26everybody
46:27and George Russell
46:28can't again
46:28three tenths down
46:30on his teammate
46:31it's a Mercedes
46:321-2
46:33currently
46:33because they're
46:34the two times
46:35on the board
46:35and it's Antonelli's
46:37favour once more
46:38here's Gabriel
46:38Bortoletto
46:39next to cross the line
46:40doesn't go
46:41half as near
46:42to the pit wall
46:43as Kimi Antonelli did
46:44but it's a 1.36
46:45unused tyres
46:46that's why he's
46:471.6 seconds down
46:48Lewis Hamilton
46:49meanwhile
46:50has gone fastest
46:51overall
46:51through the first sector
46:52the chase
46:53as they say
46:54is on
46:55yeah that was an area
46:56where he needed
46:56to improve
46:57from Q2
46:58so great to see
46:59Lewis getting
47:00a purple sector
47:00in sector one
47:01and it's a section
47:02we all love to drive
47:04and that will give him
47:04so much confidence
47:05for sector two and three
47:06Arvid Lindblad
47:07with a 1.31.5
47:08will have his time
47:09deleted for exceeding
47:10track limits
47:11as Lando Norris
47:12slots into P3
47:13ahead of Pierre Gasly
47:15his teammate
47:16Oscar Piastri
47:17will be next
47:17across the line
47:18and he goes then
47:19ahead of Lando Norris
47:21he was third
47:21on the grid last year
47:22he's third on the grid
47:23currently this year
47:24but there are others
47:25still to come
47:26including Charles Leclerc
47:27and Lewis Hamilton
47:28who are pretty much
47:29neck and neck
47:30on this lap so far
47:31Hamilton
47:32only fifth fastest
47:33once again
47:34losing a bit more time
47:35in the final sector
47:36Leclerc will be next
47:38across the line
47:38and he replaces
47:40Hamilton
47:40fifth fastest
47:41so where's the
47:42McLaren
47:43over the Ferrari
47:43challenge
47:44gone here
47:45they're down in
47:46fifth and sixth
47:46the McLarens
47:47have jumped up
47:47the third and fourth
47:48it's all turned
47:49around a little bit
47:50Isaac Hadja
47:51was third on the grid
47:51for the opening race
47:52of the season
47:53here at Suzuka
47:54seventh is the best
47:55he can manage
47:56on that run
47:56yeah it's quite a
47:57big margin as well
47:58isn't it
47:59for Ferrari
48:00compared to the
48:00Mercedes cars
48:01and it does look
48:02like both Mercedes
48:03teams
48:03Mercedes and McLaren
48:05they are
48:06they have gained
48:07a bit of an advantage
48:07in this Q3 session
48:08I don't know
48:09if it's the power
48:10they're able to use
48:11or what
48:11so
48:13provisional pole
48:14for Kimi Antonelli
48:15which would be
48:16the 50th pole position
48:18by an Italian driver
48:19in the history
48:20of the Formula One
48:21World Championship
48:22they've had
48:23they waited a while
48:25for a pole position
48:26and like the
48:28proverbial
48:28Milan bus 2
48:29look like they're
48:30coming at once
48:31unless George Russell
48:32can find a way
48:33to get out of
48:35the chicane
48:36into the final corner
48:37with a bit more
48:38stability at the rear
48:39and get the power down
48:40he's found 3 tenths
48:42hasn't he
48:42you know
48:42he was 6 tenths down
48:43he's got another 3 to 5
48:45he's only got another
48:453 to 5
48:46easy
48:46but the difference is
48:47he has to find it
48:49whereas for Kimi
48:50he's got the banker in
48:51now he can go
48:52and have some fun
48:52and if he makes a tiny
48:54mistake here or there
48:54it doesn't matter so much
48:55but you know
48:56it's nice having that banker
48:57as a driver going into
48:58you know
48:59the last run of Q3
49:00this is interesting
49:01the two Ferrari drivers
49:02there
49:02so Lewis had got a great
49:04first sector
49:04then Charles McClare
49:05starts to reel him in
49:06a little bit
49:07as the lap goes on
49:08because whilst a lot
49:10of the talk
49:10has been about
49:11battery deployment
49:12recharging
49:13and when to use
49:14the boot
49:14he doesn't have
49:14to the point
