00:13presented by St. Xavier University on CHSN.
00:16Stacey and Mark joined every week by some of the best guests in the world of sports and entertainment.
00:20You can catch it on Fridays at 4 as you did today.
00:23Watch on demand of the CHSN app and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
00:26That's some interesting conversations today.
00:28Yeah, obviously all the news surrounding Billy Donovan.
00:32You guys discussed that.
00:33You guys discussed Manas Buzellis.
00:35The big Miller.
00:37Talked about his impact and Timmy Whispers had to hold it down in the studio
00:41as Mark Schinowski will be with you tomorrow night from Memphis
00:46when the Bulls play the back end of this back-to-back.
00:48Lead has been trimmed down to one.
00:52Here's Okoro at a hot first half.
00:54Driving on SGA and he got denied at the rim.
00:59And you can see that Oklahoma City now has turned it up a notch.
01:03Let's see if the Bulls can answer it.
01:06Looking for his first three.
01:07Still hasn't made one on eight tries SGA.
01:10Here comes Buzellis.
01:12Wallace picks him up.
01:14Here's Jones.
01:17Into the pave.
01:18One of the smallest guards in the NBA.
01:20Still gets it done around the rim.
01:22And one of the strongest.
01:24A chance at a three-point play.
01:26Rob Dillingham talked about how strong Trey Jones is with that six-foot-one frame.
01:31I'll tell you, pound for pound.
01:32You're going to see right here he goes up against a six-foot-six.
01:35And he just puts that body in.
01:37And remember now, Shea Gills has caught him with a little elbow early in the first half.
01:41And you see him getting ready to put one in his chin.
01:44But he's just solid.
01:45He's been solid since the Bulls acquired him in the trade from San Antonio.
01:49One of the really good pickups that they made during that last year.
01:55He's come on and played really well.
01:57And when he's healthy, boy, I tell you what.
01:59He gives the Bulls a chance to win games.
02:02I wonder if you check the score at halftime.
02:04The Duke Blue Devils beat St. John's in the Sweet 16.
02:08They were down at one point.
02:10End up winning by five.
02:11Eight at a 75.
02:13SGA is now 0 for 9 from three.
02:16But, boy, Jaylen Williams just knocked it off of Trey Jones and out.
02:21Hartenstein wants to push the pace.
02:22This is what you were talking about, Stacey.
02:23He just wanted the ball to get him going quickly down the floor.
02:27Oh, he misdribbled.
02:29So Jones takes it and lays it in.
02:32You saw Kaysen Wallace just kind of mishandled the ball.
02:35And had he touched it again, it would have been a turnover anyway.
02:37He probably should have just gave up the turnover.
02:39He thought Hartenstein was going to pop out.
02:41He didn't.
02:42By the time it was too late.
02:43Oh, Boozelis came over after Jones.
02:45Oh, Karch Karaj, just a spike.
02:47Jones had a nice defense initially.
02:49And then Boozelis comes over for the swat.
02:52Look at this right here in the watch.
02:54Good defense.
02:55And then watch Boozelis come over.
02:56Just spikes the ball.
02:58I think Jones might get credit for it, too.
03:00I think that's a double block right there.
03:04There is SGA.
03:06Oh, wow.
03:07Tight quarter pass somehow to Wallace.
03:10Hartenstein has to reset on the handoff to Williams.
03:13Bodies into Yabusele.
03:15Good swarming defense by the Bulls.
03:16They trapped him on the baseline.
03:18Oh, oh.
03:18Oh, hot potato.
03:19And then Wallace comes out of there with it.
03:21Yeah, you're the Bulls.
03:22You can't have that turnover.
03:23Did a good defensive sequence on that last ball.
03:28SGA draws the foul.
03:30And as soon as he saw Yabusele on it, he went right at him.
03:34Yep.
03:34He went right on the attack.
03:38This is a bad turnover right now.
03:40They did a great job of getting that turnover in their watch.
03:43Don't panic.
03:44Just get the ball to the middle of the floor.
03:46You got two guards out there.
03:47You got Trey Jones.
03:48Throw it back to Trey Jones.
03:49Two guard front and then run your offense.
03:51Kind of feels like a moment where the Thunder almost paced them a little faster than the Bulls wanted to
03:57move, right?
03:57And that's something that they do.
03:58That's what their swarming, quick, long defenders all seem to do.
04:03Even when they turn it over or something, they seem to recover and force you to play a little faster
04:07than you want.
04:07Well, they know that, you know, the Bulls had a great first half.
04:10And so they wanted to come out here and set the tempo by playing.
04:14Their defense has been solid.
04:15The Bulls just made shots.
04:16But they've even tightened up their defense more.
04:18And they're trying to get Shea Gilders going a little bit.
04:20He's struggling right now with his shot.
04:22Five of 18.
04:23But look, he's getting to the free throw line now.
04:26That's something you don't want to do if you're Billy Donovan.
04:28You want to keep him off the line.
04:30Oh, Boozelis beats everybody down the floor.
04:33Boy, he went down the court and nobody stopped him.
04:36And Mark Dagnalt called a Billy Donovan-esque timeout right there after seeing that poor transition defense.
04:42Boozelis gets the deuce.
04:43Oh, Boozy Vert right here showing you the quickness.
04:46Blows right by the MVP.
04:48And get it out the net.
04:49The draft pick that the Bulls could get if the Trailblazers make the playoffs, that could be key.
04:54But we show you this Western Conference standings because the two teams at the top that have separated themselves.
04:59OKC has a two-game lead on San Antonio.
05:01But remember that the Spurs have the tiebreak over the Thunder this year.
05:05So if they end up tied, the Spurs would get the number one seed.
05:09And SGA talked about how important it is.
05:11They needed game seven at home against Denver last year.
05:14They needed game seven at home against the Pacers.
05:17Granted, that was the game that Halliburton suffered the injury.
05:19But it's important as everything and every team in the NBA that makes the playoffs knows that.
05:25He knows how key these games down the stretch are.
05:28And right now, his team is down by six to the Bulls.
05:30But here's the thing that he's got to remember is that you're an elite player.
05:36You don't want to get that in your mindset that we have to have home court advantage to win because
05:40you may have to go on the road.
05:42When we lost to, you know, New York, you know, four games here in the regular season, they worked so
05:47hard to get home court advantage.
05:48They got the number one seed.
05:50We didn't care.
05:51We came in and said, all we need to do is win one.
05:54And then home court switches back to you.
05:55So his mindset has to change.
05:57If they don't get home court advantage, they don't get home court advantage.
06:00But you don't want to go in there saying, wow, we didn't get home court advantage, so we're going to
06:02lose this series.
06:03You just can't do that.
06:04It's an interesting mindset to think about.
06:06Miller's foul sends Williams to the line.
06:08That's a fair point, too.
06:09And I imagine Nikola Jokic is sitting there going, all right, whatever.
06:12We play wherever we want to play.
06:13We play wherever you play.
06:14I mean, listen, you've got a great team.
06:16You're defending champions.
06:19You don't care where you play.
06:20We can play in the alley.
06:21We're going to still beat you.
06:23Okoro was last to touch, so suddenly a chance for another basket on this possession for Mark Dagnall's team.
06:30And I love Shea Gilders-Alessander.
06:32Last year, they did need number one.
06:33They need to beat seven games.
06:35They need to beat.
06:35Oh, good block.
06:36Who's zealous?
06:37Good block.
06:38On Hartenstein.
06:39But this year, I don't think you should have to think that way.
06:46We'll still lead by four.
06:47Boy, Jalen Williams just picked the pocket of Josh Giddey.
06:50That ball.
06:51Williams drops it off.
06:52SGA back to Jalen underneath.
06:55Back to SGA.
06:57That is...
06:59He is 5 of 19 from the field.
07:02With 9 of those misses from 3.
07:04Sexton on the other hand.
07:05Oh, Sexton on the beach.
07:06He has been red hot.
07:087 for 7 is Colin Sexton.
07:11Wow.
07:11And 5 for 5 from outside.
07:1319 points.
07:18SGA spinning.
07:19Nice spinnings with the light.
07:20Now you're going to start seeing him put the ball on the floor and try to get to the rim
07:23now.
07:24Mid-range isn't really falling.
07:25The 3-ball has not fallen at all tonight.
07:27So he's going to attack.
07:32He shot 5 free throws tonight.
07:35Bulls have done a good job of not allowing him to get on the foul line.
07:38Sexton to Giddey for 3.
07:40Short.
07:41Good job by Okoro to separate from SGA for the rebound.
07:44Giddey inside.
07:45Miller outside.
07:46Off target.
07:47And the rebound grabbed by the 7-footer.
07:50I understand with 9 rebounds tonight.
07:526.9 rebounds.
07:54That's when he averages 9 boards.
07:56Jalen Williams switching hands.
07:57Rims out.
07:58Grabbed by Hartenstein for his 10th board.
08:00And another offensive rebound for him.
08:02Oh, don't leave him.
08:03Jalen Williams off target.
08:05And Hartenstein and Miller banging away for the rebound, I should say.
08:10Miller on the hold.
08:11It will be.
08:12He grabbed the bigger Hartenstein.
08:14You see the pressure that Hartenstein puts on you going through the offensive glass.
08:19He's a big, strong kid.
08:21He just goes in there and he's going to make you have to box him out.
08:24Last year, he averaged a career high 10 rebounds a game.
08:28He's just a shade under that this year.
08:30Miller tried to get him.
08:32But again, when you're shooting these jump shots, that ball comes off on different angles.
08:37Dennis Robin was the key, like a really good at reading balls off the glass and off the backboard and
08:43off the rim.
08:44I love that last dance segment where he was kind of going through like a beautiful mind style.
08:48Like how he reads angles and where the ball, what the spin of the ball will do to the ricochet
08:54off the rim.
08:54And Wallace has been hot.
08:56He misses that one.
08:57Miller the rebound.
08:58You don't really see guys like that steady rebounding anymore.
09:05Miller's got to be careful.
09:06He's pushing a little bit on these screens.
09:08Giddee.
09:09Off target on the three.
09:12Giddee's trouble with his shot tonight, too.
09:14One of six.
09:150 for 4 from outside.
09:17Oh, they gave SGA a wide open lane.
09:20And he, luckily for the Bulls, misses the layup.
09:23But he draws a foul.
09:24Billy Donovan's throwing his hands up going, how do you let that guy who leads the NBA, it drives to
09:30the rim.
09:30Get to the rim that easily.
09:32Well, miscommunication.
09:33I mean, you've got to talk if you're the defense.
09:37You see right there, you have to make a decision.
09:39If you're Colin Sexton, you know that's not your man.
09:42But you have to slide over and stop him from that drive and make him kick that ball because he's
09:48capable of getting to the foul line.
09:49Even though he's struggling with his shot tonight, he's capable of getting to the foul line double-digit times.
09:53Well, Sexton commits his second foul.
09:55That's now five team fouls.
09:57So, it's six minutes to go still in this quarter.
10:00A team that gets to the free-throw line often will get there on defensive fouls.
10:05Registration is open for youth hoop summer camps and clinics by BMO.
10:08Programs available across Chicagoland for kids ages 3 to 14.
10:12You can visit bulls.com slash youth hoops to sign up.
10:15Oklahoma City hasn't gotten to the free-throw line but 16 times.
10:18Not a lot.
10:19Bulls only eight times.
10:22Giddy trying to get going.
10:23That might have been blocked by Dort.
10:25Nice job by Okoro to get there, but his putback attempt won't go.
10:29A three can tie it for the Thunder.
10:31SGA's going to attack.
10:33Oh, he missed another one close range.
10:35It has not been his night.
10:39Free pass!
10:41Gouzel is to Giddy.
10:43Miller can't get one off, so instead he'll drive.
10:45Switch to the right hand that time, and he couldn't finish.
10:48Jalen Williams clears to SGA.
10:51A.J. Mitchell is on the run out, and he lays it in.
10:54You'll see two people took the basketball instead of going tandem defensively.
10:58One in front, one in the back to protect the rim.
11:00And both guys were on the ball handler, and you saw Oklahoma City get an easy layup.
11:07Miller hits a three when they needed it.
11:12He stepped up here, and that was a big shot.
11:15Going to slow momentum down at him.
11:18Stems the tie for a moment, SGA steps back, he's 0-for-10 from outside.
11:27Another one from outside, Okoro can't hit, SGA trying to save it, and it's out of bounds for the Bulls.
11:36Nice shot by Jeff, our stage manager, by the way.
11:39He was ready for the ball.
11:40Jeff, it's a quick reaction.
11:41Quick reaction, cat-like, some would say.
11:43There's only a couple of guys that can do that.
11:44It's him and Joe Grubb back in Chicago.
11:47They've got those quick reflexes like a cat.
11:49I feel safe sitting at this table.
11:51We've got multiple black belts.
11:53We've got Joe Grubb and Jeff.
11:54There's some stage managers who've got the reaction of a 60-year-old boxer.
11:58You know, they can't move at all.
12:00But Okoro hits a three, he's got 20.
12:02Oh, wow, bang, bang, bang.
12:05Big night for Isaac Okoro back in the starting lineup tonight.
12:10The Bulls with Miller and Okoro getting some big threes to stem the tie.
12:15There's SGA in the mid-range getting back on track.
12:17I tell you what, he gets away with a push-off every single time when he does that step-back.
12:22He uses that off-arm to push off and get separation.
12:25Jones with a strong drive and one.
12:28Yeah, he got the big fella on the island.
12:30Williams is out there on his own without any floaties on and just blew right by him.
12:34Took him to the deep end.
12:36Watch this, whoop, blows right by him.
12:38Nothing he can do.
12:39He tried.
12:41But Trey Jones just too fast.
12:43Trey Jones with 10 points, 9 assists tonight.
12:46Miller's got 13 off the bench.
12:48Sexton with 19 on 7 of 7 off the bench.
12:51Buzelas has 13, and Isaac Okoro has his third 20-point game this season with the Bulls.
12:57How about the Bulls defense keeping Oklahoma City to 25% for the three-point line?
13:028 of 31 so far tonight are the Thunder.
13:09There's Mitchell, stepping over for a three.
13:13That won't go, so that continues to be a problem for the Thunder tonight.
13:18Here comes Sexton.
13:20Looking to stay perfect.
13:22That's his first miss of the night.
13:23Mitchell tapped it to Williams.
13:25You're back.
13:25Russo at the controls.
13:29Got shut off by Sexton.
13:31Buzelas has the assignment on the MVP.
13:34Who spins to the cup, looking for contact, and they're not going to give it to him.
13:40Those are plays where SGA is used to getting the call.
13:43Buzelas actually ended up getting the worst of that.
13:46And they may actually take a look at this.
13:48I'll tell you what.
13:49This is how it's going to be called in the playoffs.
13:51He might want to get used to this.
13:52He's not going to get every call because he's the MVP, and he's used to getting these calls.
13:58They may take a look at this here.
14:05Buzelas is getting looked at by Todd Campbell.
14:07The city has called a timeout to challenge the on-court ruling of Chicago possession.
14:11As part of this trigger, we may also see if there is a foul proximate to the play.
14:15So they will look for an approximate foul there against the Bulls as SGA spun inside,
14:21and they'll also look to see out of bounds.
14:26Where's the foul?
14:27It's tough to call one there.
14:28Listen, SGA does a great job of maneuvering.
14:31Officials know that he is one of the craftiest players in the league,
14:34so he does get a lot of calls that other players maybe don't.
14:38And this is one of those rare occasions where even I would go, you know what?
14:40I don't see it there.
14:42I don't see the foul there.
14:44You know, if you want to look and see who touched the ball last, okay, I can see that.
14:47But if you come back and reverse and give him that foul, it would be a frustrating look.
14:52It would be a frustrating call for the Bulls because, you know, he gets every call anyway.
14:58He gets plenty of calls.
14:58And again, I think he earns a lot of them.
15:01I do think there are some occasions where it probably shouldn't be called.
15:04After review, it has been determined that the left arm of Boozellas is not vertical,
15:08and therefore the ruling on the floor of Chicago possession has been overturned to a defensive foul on Chicago.
15:14The challenge by Oklahoma City is successful.
15:17They keep their timeout.
15:19Chicago has one, or excuse me, Oklahoma City has one challenge remaining.
15:23We will take two shots for the defensive foul.
15:25So watch the left arm of Boozellas.
15:29So I guess they're saying that it was already on an angle.
15:32It didn't feel like SGA had gone into the left arm.
15:36So I felt that he was the one that initiated that contact.
15:38But they're going to say Boozellas' left arm was not vertical on the play.
15:43So SGA will go right back to the free throw line.
15:45And a successful challenge for both coaches so far.
15:49Enjoy the Bulls Kid Nation Kids Club presented by BMO.

15:55Get in on the fun this season at bulls.com slash kidnation.
15:59So two big free throws for SGA, his eighth and ninth of the ninth.
16:06Averages eight makes per game to lead the NBA.
16:09Boozellas will go to the bench after picking up his second foul.
16:20Jay Gilgis-Alexander does extend the NBA streak and be a record streak.
16:27That's 134 straight games with at least 20 points going back two and a half years.
16:33Incredible run.
16:34This is a historic streak.
16:38Okoro stepping through and now SGA gets the block.
16:40Well, that's a mark of consistency on Shea Gilgis-Alexander's part.
16:44I mean, every night to have to come up here and get 20 points every night.
16:48Knowing, especially as that record was getting closer, teams knowing that, you know, that you're doing that.
16:53He's had a couple of games where he only had 20.
16:55He was trying to make sure he had it.
16:57There's A.J. Mitchell with the block on Sexton.
17:09Mitchell with the defense and the offense.
17:11He drives it in on Williams.
17:13He's going to be big for them.
17:15He came out of nowhere like a gangbuster.
17:19Second year out of UC Santa Barbara for A.J. Mitchell.
17:23Jones to Williams for three.
17:25A big one for the Bulls.
17:26That was way off.
17:29Here he comes again.
17:30Mitchell into Sexton.
17:32He held him up just enough.
17:33Good defense by Collin there.
17:35It'll stay at this end of the floor with 17 to shoot.
17:37You know what?
17:37A lot of these guys were able to develop with Jalen Williams being out and missing so many games.
17:41Yeah.
17:42You know, these guys came in and got a lot of minutes.
17:46Him, you know, you got Kaysen.
17:49I mean, these guys came in and they really, really took advantage of the playing time.
17:57Whistle and a foul is called.
17:59May take a look at this as well.
18:03James Williams is already asking for a potential flagrant on Yavu Sele.
18:08So we have all the Williams, we have all the Jalens, and our referee is a Williams as well.
18:17J-Dub, Jalen Williams missing 45 games this year.
18:21The defensive foul is under review to see if it meets the criteria of away from the play foul.
18:27Oh, they'll check for away from the play foul.
18:29So that would be free throw and the ball.
18:31So this is depending on the timing of the Gershon-Yavu Sele foul.
18:36If it comes in before that ball is entered, when does he commit the pull?
18:43Is the ball already released getting in there?
18:47Well, you talk about A.J. Mitchell, I mean, he's come in and taken the minutes from Joe Wiggins, you
18:52know, and Kendrick Williams.
18:55Yeah, Kendrick Williams hasn't played the last few games.
18:57Yeah.
18:58And he's one of the veteran guys.
18:59He's one of the better defensive players.
19:02But, I mean, that tells you the emergence of A.J. Mitchell.
19:05After review, it has been determined that when the illegal contact occurs, the ball had been released by the thrower
19:10end.
19:10Therefore, this is a common foul.
19:12It'll be penalty free throws for Williams.
19:13It's two free throws anyway because the Thunder have been in the bonus for the last three and a half
19:17minutes.
19:18But no away from the play foul.
19:20So no free throw plus possession will be two free throws instead.
19:28Good to see James Williams today.
19:30We always love running into Gucci.
19:32He actually got to meet Gucci Mane during a Miami Heat playoff game in April last year.
19:38That's one of the better referees in the game.
19:40He gets his hair cut in Chicago.
19:42That's right.
19:42More red.
19:43Razor red.
19:43Shout out.
19:44Shout out.
19:44Razor red.
19:45I saw Razor red hanging out at Wrigley Field for the opening day.
19:48Did he throw the pitch out?
19:49I think he was going to throw a pitch out.
19:51Razor red.
19:52Do it big time out there.
19:53I appreciate it.
19:54See you there.
19:55Razor red.
19:56He's going to climb to the top of the barber mountaintop, baby.
19:59And we know Gucci, he seems like he's got the waves going.
20:04Remember, we were talking about the wave cap that James Williams had.
20:07He made a whole YouTube video about it, about us giving him a shout out about how tight the
20:12cut was.
20:13So, I think he may have just gotten a cut recently.
20:16It looks very sharp right now.
20:18He's got the waves rippling.
20:21He's getting a sharp tongue lashing from Billy Donovan right now, too.
20:24Billy Donovan has been frustrated in this game with the officiator.
20:28Okoro.
20:29A rare miss for Isaac tonight.
20:31Maruso comes out of there with a rebound.
20:37Here comes Shea Gilgis-Alexander.
20:40Kicked out.
20:42Jared McCain.
20:44Into Okoro.
20:45Into traffic.
20:46Had it not free.
20:47Williams goes down to the deck.
20:48Patrick comes out with it.
20:50I'll tell you what, he was trying to bully.
20:52I think he was trying to bully Okoro.
20:55Sexton drops it off for Jones, who missed the layup attempt.
20:58Cleared by Jalen Williams for McCain.
21:00SGA on the attack.
21:03Got into the air and had to launch it back out for Caruso.
21:06J. Willow three.
21:08And that gives the Thunder an advantage for the first time since it was 38-37.
21:15Today he went on a 9-0 run.
21:17Sexton Powers.
21:18No.
21:19He wanted the foul.
21:20A little bit out of control, though, Adam.
21:23SGA to Caruso.
21:24And the Thunder are putting it to the Bulls now.
21:26Give it a time out.
21:30Billy Donovan is apoplectic with the officiating.
21:34He is screaming at James Williams.
21:36And this crowd is screaming the Thunder to life.
21:40To the tune of an 11-0 run.
21:42And the lead.
21:43You can follow our Bulls insider Casey Johnson at CHSN.com.
21:47Presented by Nationwide agent Jeff Bukovic.
21:50Get to enjoy knowing the book as much to do with the jingle at jeffbuk.com.
21:53Stacy.
21:55Nationwide is on your side.
21:59That is an upset Bulls fan right now.
22:01That is an upset head coach for the Bulls in Billy Donovan right now.
22:04After he has gotten frustrated with the officiating.
22:07And the Thunder have taken full advantage to their credit.
22:10They're on an 11-0 run.
22:12And they had the lead for the first time since the second quarter.
22:15Well, Billy's asking for, you know, hey, you're going to call those on Shea Gilgis.
22:19He's got a technical.
22:19He's got a team.
22:20And good for Billy because he should be fighting for his team.
22:22You know, Shea Gilgis right now has shot, you know, he's got to the free throw line a bunch tonight.
22:26They've got 20 free throws shot to the Bulls' nine.
22:29You can't tell me that the Bulls can't go in.
22:32They're not going there and trying to drive and get fouls.
22:34You're giving Shea Gilgis these calls.
22:36You've got to balance it out if you're the officiating right now.
22:40Shea Gilgis almost has, well, they're tied with free throws with the Bulls.
22:44They're tied now.
22:45It's nine apiece.
22:47One guy.
22:50Yeah, that last one was his tenth.
22:51So he has more attempts than the Bulls as a team.
22:53And you can't say the Bulls are relying just on three-point shooting.
22:56I mean, Sexton went to the hole there.
22:59There was a lot of contact.
23:00They didn't call it.
23:02But again, we talk about being these good defensive teams having their reputation
23:07and getting breaks when other teams don't.
23:11Well, SGA and Caruso each miss a free throw.
23:14It's still a three-point lead for the Thunder, tying their largest of the game.
23:18Bulls' largest lead was nine.
23:20Here's Williams.
23:21Open for a three.
23:23Can't connect.
23:23And Caruso skies for that rebound for OKC.
23:30Uh-oh.
23:31Yabusele on an island.
23:33SGA gets met.
23:34And that's a foul.
23:34And I'm going to say this again.
23:37KYP, know your personnel.
23:39There's no reason why Yabusele should be guarding Gildas Alexander.
23:43Hustle back defensively.
23:44Switch it manually.
23:45Grab him and say, go here.
23:47Go there.
23:47You cannot leave him out here on an island by himself.
23:49Look at Shea.
23:50He just automatically goes.
23:51He's like, hey, you know what?
23:52They got a big guy on me.
23:54I'm going.
23:55You can't not do that.
23:56You have to help him out.
23:57There's no way.
23:58Just grab him.
23:59Switch.
23:59Everybody should know that there should be no mismatches on Shea Gildas Alexander.
24:04The MVP.
24:05The reigning MVP.
24:06You've got to have the right personnel on him at all times.
24:10Yabusele has been banged up with an ankle issue.
24:13He does not seem like he's moving at 100% either.
24:16And he certainly wasn't moving well trying to guard one of the best players in the league there.
24:20They've got 14 free throw shots in the corner.
24:23Yep.
24:23There you go.
24:26SGA knocks down both of those.
24:28Again, Bulls are without Jalen Smith for the rest of the year.
24:31Nick Richards is out tonight with the elbow injury.
24:33So it's been a very undersized Bulls frontcourt.
24:40Sexton trying to navigate.
24:43And he just got frustrated enough to take it himself.
24:46He said he got hit in the head.
24:48It'll be a foul on A.J. Mitchell sending Sexton to the line.
24:53And as frustrating as it is for the Bulls, who played a really great first half,
24:57you can't get caught up in the officiating and lose the focus of what you're trying to do here.
25:01Because this is a team that will run away and hide from you.
25:04And you're still in striking distance.
25:06This is a big possession right here for the Bulls to make it a one-possession game if they score.
25:12No foul in the act of shooting.
25:14It is side out.
25:15But the Bulls are in the bonus now.
25:18There is Sexton.
25:21Clips it up.
25:22Williams there.
25:23Can't squeeze it.
25:24Last touch by the Thunder.
25:25But I thought Patrick Williams was last to touch.
25:29I'll be curious if Dagnall challenges it.
25:33Bulls are trying to get it in.
25:34And they do.
25:35Sexton fires.
25:36Can't get it to go.
25:37And Jalen Williams gets the rebound.
25:40I think Bulls would have lost that challenge had it been called for.
25:43That's why Trey Jones was trying to fire that pass in right away.
25:46Smart play.
25:49Still a 13-0 run by the Thunder.
25:56SGA on the attack.
25:59And at the rim he lays it in.
26:01See the Bulls defensively have to communicate.
26:04Miller catches the long pass from Sexton and misses the jumper.
26:11It was an 88-80 Bulls advantage.
26:16A 15-0 OKC run to close the third quarter to take their biggest lead of the game into the
26:23fourth.
26:26Isaac Okoro, he's going to be looking at the screen and there should be communication.
26:30You got Patrick there and you got this here.
26:33Go ahead and roll it.
26:34He starts to look.
26:35See, he's looking.
26:35It frees it.
26:36If you're talking, you don't have to look.
26:38But this should be a switch.
26:39Go ahead and roll it between Trey Jones and him.
26:42Now, freeze it.
26:43Patrick Williams is looking.
26:44He's got to come over and try to help because that's a direct line to the basket.
26:48Go ahead and roll it.
26:50And that's where Shea Gilgis lives as an MVP, right in the rim.
26:55You have to be in position to help.
26:57You can go out and close out to Williams on that three-point shot.
27:02Thunder outscore the Bulls by a dozen in that third quarter,
27:06putting a 15-0 run to close the frame.
27:09Giddy misfires a three and Williams goes up to draw a foul.
27:14A quick look at the live lines that are powered by FanDuel Sportsbook.
27:22That is now four fouls on A.J. Mitchell off the bench.
27:29Dillingham, Williams, Miller, Boozellis, and Giddy,
27:32the five out there for the Bulls to start the fourth.
27:36Nice slip pass.
27:38Miller finds Giddy after the Dillingham feed.
27:40Giddy has really struggled tonight.
27:420 for 7 from the three-point line, just 1 for 9 from the field.
27:48He does have eight assists and six rebounds.
27:53Joe Mitchell, Jalen Williams, Kaysen Wallace,
27:56and Isaiah Hartenstein on the floor for OKC.
27:59Mitchell drives.
28:00Mitchell gets the roll.
28:02I'll tell you what, man.
28:02He's a very good basketball player.
28:04Green.
28:08Native of Belgium, played in France,
28:11with Victor Wembenyama for a little while.
28:14Miller takes it.
28:15In and out.
28:16Rebound Hartenstein.
28:18It's a 17-0 OKC run.
28:22What was that?
28:2214 straight misses.
28:24A foul is called here.
28:25This might be an offensive foul.
28:27It is on Hartenstein.
28:28Going to go the other way to the Bulls.
28:33Second on Isaiah.
28:37Born in Oregon and moved to Germany when he was 8 years old.
28:40That's where his dad Florian was a professional basketball player.
28:45His former coach.
28:49Here's Giddy.
28:51Dubu Zealous.
28:52He's got Jalen Williams on him defensively,
28:55trying to stave him off.
28:57Multitude of moves.
28:59You can see Jalen Williams trying to take away his right hand.
29:02Yeah, trying to force him to go left.
29:03Yes.
29:04Oh, wow.
29:05Joe just picked the pocket of Dillingham,
29:07then hit the deck.
29:08Dillingham did, too, to try to hold him up.
29:10Good hustle by Rob to force a jump ball.
29:13The smaller Dillingham at 6'2",
29:17will have the jump against Isaiah Joe at 6'4".
29:21I'll tell you what, I mean, listen,
29:23they're going to get after you defensively, man.
29:26I said this last year,
29:28they were the best defensive team I saw.
29:29Yep.
29:30And I'm saying it again right now.
29:31They are the best defensive team I've seen this year.
29:33Number one in efficiency last year.
29:35Number one in efficiency this year.
29:37You are correct, sir.
29:40A couple of guards for the jump,
29:42and Kayson Wallace out of there with it.
29:47Bulls in a dreadful offensive funk right now.
29:53Here is Kayson Wallace.
29:55It's a 20-0 OKC run.
29:58This is what championship teams do.
30:01They just think you got a good first half against them.
30:04They come back out and they strangle you.
30:07But six minutes without a point for the Bulls.
30:10That continues,
30:11and Joe saves it out of bounds to Hartenstein.
30:15Here comes Williams.
30:18On the drive,
30:19in the traffic,
30:20puts it in.
30:21Wow.
30:2422-0.
30:27And it will stay at this end with the Bulls
30:29as J-Dub almost knocked it off of Boozelis and out.
30:33Trey Jones will come back in,
30:35and Patrick Williams will come out.
30:37This is where now with the 22-0 run,
30:40this is where you try to find some mismatches,
30:43try to go inside.
30:45Get Gideon going against these smaller guards in the post.
30:49Something to get you going.
30:56Gideon being hassled by the excellent Wallace.
31:01Dillingham to Miller.
31:04Against Joe.
31:05Hartenstein comes over for the help.
31:08They are playing flawless defense right now with a Thunder.
31:11Joe for three.
31:13Hardenstein the rebound.
31:15Another offensive board.
31:17Another offensive board.
31:18Williams can't get it to go.
31:20Jones out of there with it.
31:22Trying to end the dreadful Bulls drought.
31:24And Jones draws a foul,
31:26and the Bulls will finally have a chance
31:27at the free throw line for some points
31:30after about six and a half minutes without scoring.
31:32Well, the crowd doesn't like the fact
31:34that they thought they got fouled on the other end
31:36a couple of times,
31:37and then the Bulls were gifted here,
31:39but, I mean, that's clearly a foul.
31:41On Mitchell, that's his fifth.
31:46Well, earlier this month,
31:48the Bulls were on the right end
31:49of a 27-0 run
31:52against the Milwaukee Bucks.
31:53They are on the wrong end
31:55of a 22-0 run right now.
32:00Finally, Jones puts it to an end.
32:04The worst in franchise history
32:06was being on the wrong end of a 23-0 run,
32:09so the Bulls stave that off.
32:11Tonight's game brought to you by Marquette Bank,
32:12Chicagoland's trusted neighborhood bank
32:14and home lender.
32:15Level up your banking at emarquettebank.com,
32:17and love where you bank.
32:19Marquette Bank,
32:19I think you were part of some near history there.
32:24Good Lord.
32:25Jones with two free throws to stem the tide.
32:29That was an avalanche.
32:38Here is Joe.
32:39Three off the screen for three.
32:41Again, how do you let that guy go?
32:43He's coming, moving without the basketball.
32:47KYB, know your personnel.
32:52Yabusele, no.
32:53You don't want to start settling it to the Bulls.
32:57You see the crowd's in it now,
32:58and they're feeding off the crowd energy.
33:01You can tell.
33:03Wallace.
33:05Wow.
33:14Jones in the paint with the left hand
33:16gets the nice bounce.
33:18Jay Jones trying to make something happen
33:20by getting it to the rim.
33:2215 points, nine assists, six rebounds.
33:25Jalen Williams draws the contact.
33:28And a technical foul is called.
33:31It'll be against Rob Dillingham,
33:34as he said something to James Williams
33:35after he got called for that foul.
33:38You can tell he didn't really like that penetration by Williams.
33:47Joe will go to the line for the Tech.
33:49This is the number one home team in the NBA.
33:51Number one road team in the NBA, obviously, too,
33:54with the number one record in the league, the Thunder.
33:56They're 29-6 at home this year.
34:00They were 35-6 last year, best home record in the league
34:04in the championship season.
34:06And we talked about the importance that they felt
34:08home court played in their run to the finals.
34:11Last year was big for them.
34:13Yep.
34:13I mean, because it was game seven on any one of those other courts,
34:15they might have lost.
34:16Sure.
34:16Because with the momentum that, you know, Denver had coming in,
34:20you've got to remember, Denver was out there coach.
34:22Jokic was pretty much coaching last year.
34:25Mike Malone was let go kind of shockingly right before the playoffs.
34:29Yeah.
34:29You saw on the sideline, Jokic was just telling plays
34:31and, you know, getting guys where they were supposed to be.
34:34But, you know, they get home court in seven games.
34:37You never know how it's going to turn out.
34:38Of course.
34:39A seventh game you really don't want to get to.
34:42And, again, if you're Oakland City,
34:43you can't be talking about you've got to have home court advantage.
34:47Well, you talked about this earlier.
34:48Like, you know, and we've discussed this plenty.
34:50The top of the West in particular is so good this year.
34:54And I know the Thunder and Spurs have kind of separated themselves
34:57at the top of it.
34:58But, like, right now, the second round,
35:01if it were chalk in the first round,
35:03the Thunder would have to play the Nuggets.
35:05Spurs would play the Lakers.
35:07Let's say the Thunder and Spurs play each other in the conference finals.
35:09You've already played a really hard series, I would imagine,
35:12in the second round to get to the conference finals
35:16where you're going to play a really tough opponent there.
35:19Uh-oh, Isaiah Jones.
35:23Well, one of the things about that, too, in the Western Conference,
35:26there's about four or five teams that you have to be aware of.
35:31I mean, Oklahoma City has to be the favorite,
35:33but I would not sleep on San Antonio.
35:35Sure.
35:35Minnesota, Denver.
35:37Denver.
35:37Denver, and then Houston.
35:38Houston still.
35:39There's Joe again.
35:40They've kind of lost, you know, contact with Joe.
35:43He's got a couple times now where he's come over wide open on shots.
35:47Again, you get so caught up on the rest of their guys,
35:49some of the other players,
35:50you forget there's other capable guys that can score.
35:54See, no one's cutting.
35:56Sexton, who started seven for seven,
35:58is now over his last five.
36:00Dillingham just had that one.
36:02Knocked out of bounds by Kaysen Wallace.
36:05And Kaysen Wallace is a tremendous player.
36:10Two-way player, defensively, can knock down threes.
36:13And there he is with the hops right there.
36:16Kentucky on Kentucky.
36:18Yep.
36:19Number 10 pick a couple of years ago in his third season.
36:24Calamos Investment Products,
36:26backed by superior risk management,
36:28asset management,
36:29in a time of disruptive change.
36:32Woo-wee.
36:33That's not like one of the local OKC joints.
36:36That's in the building here.
36:37Oh, wow.
36:38Probably grab one of those before we get out of here, I think.
36:40Oh, man.
36:42Stacy, tonight marks game number 73,
36:46meaning counting tonight.
36:47There's 10 games left.
36:48This is kind of the split of the season,
36:50and the number that sticks out to me is defensive rating.
36:54I can understand offensive rating being as low as it is.
36:56You've got a lot of new players, had a lot of injuries.
36:59The defense is going to have to improve during the offseason.
37:04You have to find some defensive players,
37:05as Jones lays that one in.
37:07And you're going to have to find some shooters.
37:08You and I have had some discussions about that,
37:09and that's something you talked about on your podcast the other day.
37:12Well, I mean, you definitely got to find shooters.
37:14But, you know, defense is, you know, it's hard, hustle, and muscle.
37:18Yeah.
37:19You've got to want to go out there.
37:20And one of the things I, me personally,
37:23Well, bad defense right there.
37:25I'm eliminating, because I don't want to be like every other team.
37:28I'm eliminating this switching, unless it's necessary.
37:32The Bulls switch entirely too much.
37:34You get mismatches all over the floor.
37:35And, like, right now, look at Yabusele.
37:38Yabusele's mismatched, yep.
37:39He should not be guarding guards like that.
37:41And it takes him off the rebounder for Hardenstein to go in there.
37:44But I'm eliminating these switches, unless it's guard on guard.
37:48Sexton finally gets a point here in a second.
37:50And if he grabs the Wimby, they can go out there and move his feet.
37:53Aiyanis can go out there and guard people on the floor.
37:55You kind of got to stay away from that.
37:57Keep your bigs on bigs.
37:58Rebound the basketball.
38:00And push it.
38:02I think one of the problems for the Bulls,
38:04and this is something you discussed as well on the pod,
38:07as Wallace is just adding insult to injury at this point,
38:11is the Bulls are so small at the guard position.
38:15And part of the problems with the Bulls switching
38:18is if you're any offensive player that has any sense,
38:24as soon as you see that you've got a small guard on you,
38:28you're just going to call for a 1-5 pick and roll.
38:32And all of a sudden, now you've got a big on you.
38:34The big is going to be guarded by a guard.
38:37And now you're in a bad position with a bad switch.
38:40And the Bulls don't have enough similarly-sized guards.
38:43This is part of the roster construction
38:44that's been a problem for the Bulls
38:46with all these undersized guards the last couple of years.
38:48Here, listen.
38:49Good teams, they're not going to waste time taking bad shots
38:53when they have matchups that they can take advantage of.
38:55They're going to stop whatever offense they're in.
38:57They're going to stop and say, wait a minute,
38:58oh, we've got a big in the post, throw it in there.
39:01Where the teams who don't recognize that,
39:03who run their offense and continue to run their offense,
39:07and you can't get a good shot
39:09because you didn't take advantage of the matchup,
39:11you have to be able, Adam, to say,
39:13oh, we're going to run the play.
39:14But if the play's not there, wait a minute,
39:16oh, we've got a guard, guard, and our big guy,
39:18throw it in there.
39:19You know, we don't do enough of that recognition
39:21because these are young players trying to execute
39:23what the coach wants them to do.
39:24They want to run the play.
39:26We're going to run the play all the way through.
39:27We didn't practice this
39:28because there's not a lot of practice time.
39:29They didn't practice plan B.
39:31What if plan A is not there?
39:32Do we have a B or C option?
39:34You know, one thing about the triangle offense,
39:36and I keep telling people,
39:37the triangle offense would kill in this league.
39:38It gives you floor spacing.
39:40It gives you cuts, screens.
39:42You get guards open.
39:44It would be perfect in this thing
39:46if the teams ran that.
39:47You see it every night, though.
39:48You see part of the triangle every single night.
39:51You know, the pinch post action, the fist side action, the screen.
39:54The Bulls ran it a couple times where you get the ball in the wing
39:56and hand off to Trey Jones.
39:58That's called fist side.
39:59That's how they opened up the game against Houston the other night
40:01where Giddy was on the right wing,
40:03and Jones ran an action off a screen around the perimeter.
40:07Draft basically a drop-off handoff.
40:09Nice finish by Jones there.
40:10But they've got two straight layups and two straight games off.
40:14They haven't ran it today.
40:15They did it against Philly.
40:16Yes.
40:16We pointed out that fist side action.
40:19Wiggins.
40:19You see, these guys are getting wide open jumpers now.
40:22The guys are not getting out to the shooters
40:24because they're getting cross-macked.
40:27So you need a big guy who's supposed to guard them.
40:29He doesn't realize he can't get out there,
40:31so he just stops.
40:32Wide open three.
40:33Bulls have suddenly found themselves
40:35after playing a very competitive two and a half quarters
40:38on a blowout loss here tonight with five to play.
41:00One year ago tonight, Josh Giddy, a Previgin memorable moment,
41:03as memorable of a moment as you could possibly put together.
41:06One year later, a homecoming of sorts for Josh.
41:09It has not been a good three-point shooting night.
41:11He's 0 for 8 from outside,
41:13but one positive is what he has continued to be steady with.
41:16That's 11 more assists tonight for Giddy,
41:19who, as of now, has the most assists per game
41:22in a single month in Bulls history going back a half century.
41:26I'm going to give Josh a break here
41:29because coming back here to Oklahoma City
41:31where he spent his start of his career here,
41:33he probably put a lot of pressure on himself.
41:35I'm not making excuses for the kids,
41:37but he probably put a lot of pressure on himself to play well.
41:41Both him and Shea Gilgis, I mean, they both shot the ball.
41:44They're a combined 0 for 18 from 3.
41:46I mean, he's one of them shot the ball well.
41:48And I'll give Josh a little slack
41:50because he does come out on most nights
41:52and he'll put up a triple-double on you.
41:54And it's been a great three-point shooting season for him.
41:57He's hit 100 threes this year.
41:59You don't think that they're motivated not to let him get off?
42:02Of course.
42:02I mean, they're going to play him super tough.
42:04Well, like you said, it goes both ways, right?
42:06Like, Giddy wants to do so well against his former team
42:08and his former teammates want to go,
42:10hey, man, you're not on this squad anymore.
42:12And they got nothing but love for Josh,
42:15but they're motivated not to let him get off.
42:18And the Williams lays that one in.
42:27Bulls have allowed 29 points in this fourth quarter already
42:30after playing very well for two-and-a-half quarters
42:34against the reigning champs.
42:35But Colin Sexton even came over to us at that break,
42:38that last break.
42:39It was like, it was that third quarter, man.
42:41It was that third quarter.
42:42And he goes, what was the score in the third?
42:44We told him it was 33-21.
42:46He goes, yep, it was that third quarter.
42:49Well, and also, too, I mean, listen,
42:52not having the bigs there for you, Nick Richards, Jalen Smith,
42:57you know, you've got to figure,
42:59I'm saying he's getting tired.
43:00Yeah, very undersized, very shorthanded with the frontcourt,
43:03as we knew it was going to be the case tonight.
43:05But the Bulls just unable to keep up.
43:11This is why, as you said, I'll repeat what you said,
43:13it's a salient point.
43:15This is what championship teams look like.
43:18Wow, so now you've got Aaron Wiggins,
43:20who didn't play the other night against Boston.
43:23This is how deep they go.
43:24They've got guys who didn't even play the other night
43:26that can come in and just give you work
43:28against your main rotation.
43:30Nice finish by Rob.
43:32And that's what championship teams do.
43:34You can go, you know, 10-11 deep.
43:37Now, they'll cut their rotation down when they get to the playoffs.
43:40You're not going to be able to play 10-11 guys.
43:42But if they can put teams away early,
43:45don't expect them not to.
43:46They'll play these guys.
43:50Rosellis blocking foul is called on Joe.
43:54That will send Modis to the free throw line.
43:56Lachlan Ulbrich will check into the game
43:58as I imagine Billy Donovan is going to go
44:00as deep into a shorthanded bench as he can
44:02in these final minutes.
44:03And one thing about these games, too,
44:05you can take something away from these type of games.
44:07Of course.
44:08You don't want to...
44:09You can hang your head,
44:10oh, they were better than us.
44:11But one thing you take away,
44:13and if I'm telling these guys over there,
44:14is look at how hard they play.
44:17Every single one of them.
44:19What value...
44:19We talked about this last week.
44:21Can you find value at any moment,
44:23even if it's not something you did or your team did?
44:26Look at the other guys and say,
44:27what can I take away from them?
44:29And there's no shame in learning something from someone.
44:33Look at how hard they play.
44:35Look at how they execute.
44:36You can take away something from them.
44:39But when we were playing the Pistons
44:41and they were beating us,
44:42you know, we were learning things about them
44:44and trying to put them, like,
44:45how can we stop this?
44:46How do we get through this?
44:48And we were constantly...
44:49Coaches would always walk by,
44:50text Winner, Johnny Bach,
44:51you guys pay attention, watch.
44:53This is going to help us down the line.
44:55And you learn something from some teams.
44:58It's a learning experience,
44:59especially with a young team like the Bulls have.
45:01There's always going to be teaching and learning moments.
45:04Well, you said that with Modis, too, right?
45:05Like, the education he's had in the last week alone
45:08of playing against Paul George again,
45:11and Evan Durant again,
45:12and Luka a couple of weeks ago,
45:14and Kawhi,
45:15and watching what these guys do.
45:18Williams kicks to Boozelis.
45:21Can't connect on the three.
45:22It's been a tough shooting night for Modis in particular.
45:26One for seven.
45:27He and Giddey,
45:27one for 15 from three-point range.
45:30Remember, Modis has that streak
45:31going to multiple three-pointers
45:32in 15 straight games.
45:35That's in jeopardy here.
45:39Modis right now,
45:40I mean, he's 6 of 13 from the field,
45:43but seven of his 13 shots
45:45have been three-pointers.
45:46Five of six from two-point range.
45:47So, I mean, again,
45:49recognizing where you have it going
45:51and where your shot is falling,
45:53stick to it,
45:54and then it opens up everything else.
45:59And all five of his two-point attempts
46:01have been in the paint.
46:02Right.
46:05Well, again,
46:07we'll see that streak come to an end.
46:08The second longest in Bulls history
46:10behind Kobe White's 17 straight
46:13with multiple threes.
46:14His will end at 15.
46:15A strong surge for Boozelis
46:18in that category.
46:19But, as you said,
46:21on nights where the shot's not going,
46:22how are you going to adjust?
46:24How are you going to wheel
46:26your way to the rim?
46:26We did see a couple of really nice
46:28drives to the rim
46:29where he absorbed contact,
46:31where he worked through
46:32a couple of different defenders
46:33with nice maneuvers.
46:35So there is something there.
46:36Nice move there by Leonard Miller.
46:38Well, and, you know,
46:39to his defense, too,
46:40and to this team's defense,
46:42you know,
46:42they're encouraged to shoot threes.
46:44They're encouraged to shoot threes.
46:45Yeah, of course.
46:46And the league is.
46:47The league is encouraged more.
46:48But I still think about,
46:50I mean,
46:51breaking down what
46:52Shea Gildas-Alexander has done.
46:53And it also goes back
46:55to the point you made
46:56about how the triangle
46:58would probably work really well
46:59in the modern NBA game
47:01because nobody defends
47:03the midrange anymore.
47:04No teams really focus.
47:06I mean, listen,
47:07OKC is an example
47:08because they're so quick
47:10and they're so long
47:11and the long teams
47:13can defend the heck out of you
47:14anywhere on the floor.
47:15But most teams
47:16that don't have that type of length
47:18are not defending the midrange
47:20at a high rate.
47:21So if you have actions
47:22that you talked about
47:23out of a triangle system,
47:25that opens up
47:26a lot of the middle of the floor
47:27from about 8 to 17 feet
47:30from the rim.
47:31Against a team like Oklahoma City
47:32that really challenges
47:33on the wings,
47:34they overplay,
47:35they are aggressive.
47:37You'll backcut them
47:38all day long
47:38in the triangle.
47:39You'll kill them
47:40in the triangle
47:40because when they go out
47:41to get steals,
47:42the offense in the triangle
47:43is not plays called.
47:44It's based off
47:45how defense plays you.
47:46Action and reaction.
47:47It's action and reaction.
47:48So when you get a guy
47:48trying to overplay the wing,
47:49you swing that ball,
47:50bing, it's going into the post,
47:51it's a backcut,
47:52divecoat, third cutter cut.
47:53There's so many cuts
47:54off of that
47:55that would really
47:56kind of neutralize
47:57a team
47:58that is aggressive defensively.
48:00Now, again,
48:01you know,
48:01you've got to execute.
48:02You've got to have guys
48:03with high basketball IQ
48:04to run that offense,
48:05but I've seen it
48:06on nightly basis.
48:07Every team runs
48:08some variation of it
48:09and it works in this league.
48:12Here is Wiggins
48:13on the drive
48:14gets the bounce.
48:14I mean, Steve Kerr.
48:15It works in this league.
48:17Steve Kerr
48:17in the championship years
48:18was running split cuts
48:20on a nightly basis
48:21between Steph
48:23and Klay Thompson.
48:24And nobody could stop it
48:26because if you switch,
48:27if you double play,
48:29then Steph's open.
48:29And if you double,
48:30you know,
48:31Steph,
48:31play's open.
48:32Yep.
48:32You have to be in there
48:33with all this switching defense
48:34that these teams run.
48:35Oh, my goodness.
48:37Well, that also speaks
48:38to what the Bulls need as well
48:39and that is shooters
48:40to try to run.
48:41It would be interesting
48:43to hear, you know,
48:43just talk,
48:44I've talked to Field Jackson
48:45about this,
48:45but where people can hear
48:46Field talk about
48:47the triangle offense
48:48in today's game.
48:50He believes you can
48:51run it to death
48:52in this league.
48:56But a lot of people
48:57are afraid of it
48:58because they can't teach it.
49:00and you can't teach it,
49:01you're afraid of it.
49:02Again, you and I
49:03were having a conversation
49:04with Bill Wennington
49:05the other night.
49:05Like, you guys
49:06obviously ran it
49:07to great success
49:10in the NBA.
49:10And then when you went
49:11into coaching in the CBA,
49:12you were teaching guys
49:13that offense.
49:15Bill would teach
49:16younger players
49:17who would teach his kids.
49:18There's our good friends,
49:19Bill Wennington
49:19and Chuck Swirsky.
49:20He would teach it
49:21to his kids.
49:21I ran it as like
49:23a 12-year-old
49:23with our, like,
49:25youth team.
49:25Like, it was,
49:27as soon as you got
49:28an understanding
49:28of why you were
49:30doing something,
49:31I think it was
49:31so much easier
49:32to pick up.
49:33And understand,
49:34I'm not comparing
49:35our youth league
49:36to the NBA,
49:36but just the concept,
49:38the conceptual nature
49:39of the triangle
49:40is so much about
49:41flow and feel
49:42and reacting
49:43to what the defense
49:44gives you.
49:45It's all options
49:46based off of
49:47defensive reactions.
49:47And see,
49:48and the thing, too,
49:50it's great
49:50to have a Michael
49:52or Kobe
49:52when the shot clock
49:53winds down, okay?
49:55But in the CBA,
49:56I ran it,
49:56we didn't have
49:57that kind of guy.
49:57Sure.
49:58You can get people
49:59as long as they execute
50:00and they cut hard
50:01and they read the defense.
50:02That's the whole thing.
50:03It's so easy
50:04in this day and age
50:05because everybody switches.
50:07So when you practice
50:08against a triangle,
50:09you can't practice
50:10against a triangle
50:10because you don't really
50:11know how to stop it.
50:12Right.
50:12But you can stop
50:13a pick and roll.
50:13You can stop, you know,
50:14all these things
50:15that they do
50:15in today's game.
50:16But at the same time,
50:18when I see it every night,
50:19I see some variations
50:20of it every night.
50:21It just convinces me
50:22that if it's taught right,
50:24it can be ran
50:26perfectly in this league.
50:27Well, especially
50:27when it's such a copycat league
50:29on defense as well
50:30because everybody
50:30is just basically running.
50:32They're basically,
50:33defenses are basically
50:34choosing and picking
50:35when they want to blitz
50:36a pick and roll action
50:37because everybody
50:37runs a pick and roll action.
50:39So overaggressive teams
50:40who blitz out high,
50:42if you can react
50:43properly to that,
50:44two passes
50:44get you an open look
50:45about 75% of the time.
50:47And you still can get
50:49three-point shots off
50:50because of the spacing.
50:52You still can get
50:52tons of three-point shots off.
50:54It's just in that era,
50:55we didn't have to shoot threes.
50:57Yeah.
50:57We were,
50:58we could score
50:58within the two-point range.
51:00We didn't need that.
51:00Well, your actions
51:01were often based
51:02out of post-action
51:03and high-post-action.
51:04So the entry feed
51:04goes to the elbow
51:05or the post
51:06depending on what
51:06the defense gives you.
51:08And then if you have
51:08a great passing big,
51:09which you guys
51:10talked about this,
51:11you were willing to pass.
51:12Bill Wennington
51:13was a really willing passer.
51:14People forget,
51:15Bill Wennington
51:15had a pretty wet jump shot.
51:16So he was really deadly
51:18like around 12 to 15 feet.
51:20You were more
51:20of a post-action guy,
51:21but the entry feed
51:23could come into
51:23multiple spots.
51:24And based on the
51:25defensive reaction,
51:26if they doubled,
51:27that was a kick out
51:28to the wing for a three.
51:29Now in this era,
51:30you would see more
51:31corner shots
51:31and more baseline cuts
51:34to get you an open look
51:35like the Warriors
51:36ran with Steph and Clay.
51:37But those options are there.
51:39It's too hard to double
51:40out of that offense
51:41because of the spacing
51:42and what you're going
51:43to give up.
51:44Because, you know,
51:44you have a guy like
51:45Tony Kukoc,
51:46who's 6'11",
51:47that can play
51:48point forward for you
51:50and be one of the guards
51:52up top.
51:52And then all of a sudden
51:53you double Michael
51:54and then he moves
51:55to a spot wide open
51:56for a three.
51:57Steve Kerr, boom.
51:58John Paxson.
51:59You can find
52:00three-point shots.
52:01Defense here,
52:02I'm telling you.
52:05Somebody bring
52:06the triangle back, baby.
52:08Somebody bring it back.
52:09Thank you for listening
52:09to our dissertation
52:10as the clock winds down.
52:12It's a Stacey Ann
52:12and podcast.
52:18Oh, man.
52:19On a night where SGA
52:21goes 0 for 10
52:22from three-point range,
52:23he still puts up
52:2425 points.
52:25The Thunder
52:26get great contributions
52:27from everybody
52:28across the board.
52:29They extend their
52:30win streak over the Bulls
52:31to eight straight.
52:32That is four straight
52:33season sweeps
52:34for OKC over Chicago.
52:37Buzellis ends up
52:38with 15.
52:39Okoro had 20.
52:40Jones 21.
52:42Sexton 22.
52:43But it was the third
52:43quarter that turned
52:44the tide for the Thunder
52:45who bounced back
52:47from a loss to Boston
52:48with a resounding
52:49second half performance
52:50against the Bulls
52:51who dropped to 0-2
52:52on this four-game road trip.
52:54The Thunder open up
52:55their five-game homestand
52:57with a 131-113 victory
52:59over the Bulls
52:59who are back in action
53:00tomorrow night.
53:01Mark Schinowski
53:02and Stacey King
53:03will be with you
