00:00Christian Wade with some defiance for Newcastle towards the end of that half
00:04they need much much clocked on as a Newcastle player for the 50th time at
00:09the start of this season, replacing Richard Paltriman, there he is.
00:19Skinner gets Exeter going again for the first 40 minutes it was for the Chiefs.
00:30Benitez Cruz and Dolly Leatherbarrow up from Exeter a few seasons ago now.
00:38Heavy, heavy ball carrier at his best, he tends to average around 15 carries a day,
00:43he's not doing that tonight. Exeter aren't allowing Newcastle that kind of transportation.
00:51Cam Riddle two tries already, both wingers, he and Paul Braumbampo on hat-tricks now.
01:00Hooper, again, has been all over the place.
01:05Skinner, behind Tuwema, once again doing that job of carrying the ball forwards happily.
01:12You go on the ball when the tackler's lying on the wrong side. Tackler first.
01:18Some three speakments.
01:21Can't jackal until he's moved.
01:23Breaking news by the way, from down in Devon during that first half that Henry Slade has become a dad
01:30again. A baby daughter Delphine for Henry and his wife Megan. Congratulations to all three of them.
01:38I sincerely hope that Henry wasn't spending his first evening with Megan watching the first half,
01:43but you never know. If he was, good on you, Henry. And well done, Megan.
01:49Well, he's a good club man, isn't he? He'd have had it on his phone at least, wouldn't he?
01:54I don't know. That's some conversation you've got to have.
02:00Anyway, whether they're watching live or not, well done to all of them.
02:04Long time. Jack Yendall for the Chiefs and Zambanin, just a guaranteed
02:10source of line-up. Ball and then the easy ball through to Varney.
02:15Set up by Vincent. It feels too easy. I'm looking at it through Newcastle eyes.
02:21It's fabulous for the Chiefs, but that's much too easy, surely.
02:24It definitely is too easy, but it's also nice, simple attack. As the ball comes back inside,
02:32just look, there are two options. Vincent gets the ball. There are two options.
02:36And Brambampo being the man in form, the sniper, the finisher, the specimen, he's the man that draws
02:43the attention. There's just a hole there. So Leatherman has been carrying well up until this
02:48evening. He really needs to stay on his man. They had the numbers. Leatherbarrow, sorry.
02:55They had the numbers, but he bumped out onto Vincent. Vincent is such a threat ball in hand.
03:02They didn't quite number up. And two options ran towards one defender in the end in Leatherbarrow.
03:09They had the right numbers. But when you chuck people, lots of options at the line against
03:15defenders in motion, people make mistakes. And that's exactly what Exeter Chiefs have done.
03:21They have been so clinical between their first and third phase, cause all manner of problems to
03:26Newcastle and they haven't been able to solve the Chiefs puzzles. What a good signing Varney's been this
03:33season brought back from Van and playing in France, where he'd gone after he left Gloucester.
03:40There are so many reasons why Exeter is so much better this season, but the energy,
03:45the control he's bringing from Scrum Half. I think for me that all the cool skills are there,
03:49the energy, but for me it's decisiveness. He seems to know exactly what he wants to do 99% of
03:54the time,
03:55which makes such a difference to the big Thai fellas running around him. They don't have to second
03:59guess anything. We'll chat with Rob Baxter about Stephen Varney in a minute.
04:05Dig deeper into his thoughts on this six-try performance so far.
04:11Rob next, Leatherbarrow for the Falcons. Usher's not far away, plumb head number four,
04:20goes in to protect the ball, which once more Exeter were looking to burgle back.
04:26Nick, well, I think this game's been won, whilst the majority of the tri has been scored out wide.
04:31Chiefs are winning the fight, the battle between the fifteens. Physically, and there's another
04:36opportunity of that right there. Let's have a chat with Rob. Rob, your thoughts on Stephen Varney,
04:43the latest tri-scorer, and what he's brought to the squad this season?
04:47I mean, he's just played with great quality, great energy, great commitment from him as well.
04:52I mean, literally from day one when he turned up. You know, the things you really like to see
04:56from a coaching perspective, you know, he's the first guy in there celebrating tries.
05:00He's emotionally involved with the team, which is you really want to see. And then on top of that,
05:04he's just playing with composure, but skill and pace. You know, he's just kind of really
05:11putting in complete performances for us most time he plays.
05:14You've been busy this week delivering the usual Friday night in Newcastle,
05:17warnings, the long trip here at Kingston Park, the fence that you fell at last season.
05:22You must be thrilled with what you're seeing at the moment.
05:25Yeah, I mean, without doubt, I mean, really, it's always spoken about during the week.
05:29You know, we have a good performance against Sale that gets us into the top four.
05:33And then you need to say to the players, well, what are we going to do with it?
05:36Are we going to grow with it? Are we going to enjoy it? Are we going to try and strive
05:40as hard as we can
05:41to maintain that top four to extend our season? Or are we going to use the pressure to go against
05:46us?
05:47And I think you never want to make predictions, you know, when there's so much of a game left.
05:53But right here now, I can't fault the emotional and physical intensity the lads have gone out and set the
05:59bar to.
06:00One last question, Rob. What's the technical thing that you're doing right tonight that your eyes are picking up?
06:06The technical thing, I think we're good around the breakdown, which is a key in for Newcastle.
06:10They've been very competitive in that area. And I think that's allowed us to play with pace.
06:15But I think, I'll be honest with you, I think the key one is we've really nailed down some real
06:18quality
06:19decision-making around the attacks we want to run and we're driving them with accuracy.
06:24Now, Henry Slade had a baby daughter, by the way. Delphi.
06:28Yes. You knew that. I did.
06:31Brilliant. Cheers, Rob. Thanks very much.
06:36I wonder why he didn't sound particularly excited. He already knew.
06:39Yeah, old news. All the old news on TNT Sport.
06:45Anyway, here goes Oli Leather Barrow.
06:49Can Newcastle create some good news for themselves?
06:54Third visit with the ball into the Chiefs 22.
06:59Head contact to White 10, penalty only.
07:01Against White. Against White, yes, penalty only.
07:05The TNT.
07:05Stuart Terridge, the TMO, coming in.
07:07Just pulling him down by the head in the tackle.
07:09Off the back of the line, out in line with me, two metres out from the left team.
07:13There, high tackle.
07:19Craig Maxwell, Keith, our referee tonight.
07:22And once again, Colin will prob this five metres away.
07:28It's Harvey Skinner, I think, got penalised here.
07:31Just pulling the man down by his head.
07:35Yeah, he grabs onto him, gets hold of the scrum cap, doesn't he?
07:37He sees it as a handle, got caught.
07:50Just by Scott, but it was not clean, however.
07:55McGuigan brings it through.
07:56It's stripped forward by White, he's no idea that's happened.
07:59Just a knock-off.
08:00The ball was knocked on.
08:02By the way, if you're wondering about Van Halen and all the 80s stuff
08:06that you're hearing over the tannoy tonight.
08:08Newcastle five, Newcastle six, change please.
08:11Newcastle Red Bull's big night out, as they're calling it,
08:14and it's an 80s theme.
08:16Wouldn't it be a big neat out?
08:18I don't know, I don't speak Newcastle, but anyway.
08:20Time's on them.
08:22Good line-out defence.
08:22Anyway, good line-out defence.
08:25The extra Chiefs, again, doesn't quite work out,
08:28he knocks it on, Zaman in, but gets off the ground so well.
08:31Part of that is his genetics and all that sort of stuff.
08:34Doesn't look the hardest bloke to lift in the world.
08:36If you're a big, strong lifter, a big, strong front row,
08:38but actually, it's his timing.
08:40It's excellent, causing problems.
08:42At that time, just knocked it on.
08:49Second.
08:50That's a really nice set again, Georgie.
08:52That's nice, that, Georgie.
08:56Crouch.
08:59Newcastle ready themselves to bring on Freddie Clarke and Tom Gordon
09:02into the back five.
09:04In fact, they're just on now, taking the places of Adam Scott and Ruben Parsons,
09:09and Benitez Cruz away to the right and way, but no way through there.
09:14Advantage again.
09:20Knock on by White and the tackle.
09:24Chiefs have knocked it on, so this is advantage Newcastle.
09:29Counter's fine, it's knocked on in the tackle.
09:38The other Barrow just having a look across towards the assistant referee.
09:46The all-black Hoskins-Sototo, by the way, signed up for next season.
09:50Sam Graham's coming from Northampton.
09:52Russi Tuima, as we've mentioned, coming up from Exeter.
09:56They are restocking the back road draw very nicely.
09:59Yeah, some decent players there, some quality signing.
10:03There we go.
10:04And actually, when you have a look at the difference between the two squads today,
10:08it's definitely been the punch and power in the back five for Exeter Chiefs.
10:12They've been excellent today.
10:14But I tell you what, if Newcastle Red Bulls can get themselves a decent squad,
10:18I'd love to see some invention.
10:19Just chucking the ball to Christian Wade in no space.
10:23Expecting him to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
10:25It's not going to work every time, but they've got a brilliant opportunity to try
10:29and put some pressure and potentially score a first-phase try.
10:33Let's see.
10:34Wade, the threat to the right, and he's edging over that way now.
10:37Conan to the left.
10:40Inside Beekmans and Hurl, the centers who are on their toes,
10:43and that's the way Leatherbarrow goes.
10:45Find Beekmans.
10:47Release.
10:49Christie.
10:51Oh, he hoists it up, and that was loose,
10:53and that's been lost by Brown Bampo.
10:58Inside the half.
11:03Just look at that first phase, and you've got
11:07Leatherbarrow, who's a mean carrier, passing the ball on to Reece Beekmans,
11:11who's an aggressive carrier.
11:13But it's just not dynamic.
11:15The timing's not quite there.
11:17Leatherbarrow doesn't really threaten the defensive line.
11:19They know all day long.
11:20They've got to cover him, but really he's going to pass the ball.
11:23And the man he passes it to isn't at speed.
11:25All the momentum sucked out of it, and the ball effectively gets lobbed out to a flat-footed
11:31back line.
11:32Nearly gets picked off by Paul Brown Bampo again.
11:35He's got the mark, but he's just inside the front.
11:37Look at the Duran Duran now, hungry like the wolf.
11:40I look to Ugo, who wasn't born when this was a hit, sadly.
11:43I look to Flats, who most definitely was born.
11:46Just.
11:48I think I might be a millennial.
11:51I think 1980, I might be a millennial.
11:55Doesn't that mean you were born after 2000, aren't they millennials?
11:58No.
11:59It's 1980.
12:00Gen X up to 80, or 81 it is.
12:02It is.
12:03It's here.
12:04Yeah.
12:06Mate, we're millennials, you and me, not the baby boomer over there.
12:10I'll tell you somebody who wasn't a millennial, isn't a millennial, he's not a millennial.
12:18Red Bulls, Newcastle Red Bulls technical advisor.
12:21Gregor Townsend is in the house.
12:23Always eating, always eating.
12:26Still in good shape, isn't it, though?
12:31He had a good Six Nations, didn't he?
12:33I was just thinking he'd have been largely very happy with it.
12:37Just couldn't finish the job in Dublin.
12:42Anyway, back to this.
12:45A lot of work for Newcastle to do, into the final half an hour.
12:51Benitez-Cruz, and this is Alex Hurl, centre come wing, come full-back.
12:55Such a useful player for the Red Bulls to have.
12:58It's just not been quick at the breakdown, has it?
13:02It's been really, really stodgy.
13:04Release.
13:05Rob Baxter was speaking about the attacking choice of the decision-maker born in hand.
13:09I think Newcastle tonight's been poor.
13:11They got away with that one.
13:13And they've got away with that one again, because they've been given penalty advantage.
13:19Okay, bit of half and puff there.
13:21Towards the post.
13:22But they have had, this has been the longest period they've had in the 22, and they're doing nothing with
13:28it.
13:28Got to convert something out of it.
13:31So they've had a couple of line outs.
13:32We've had a quick tap penalty.
13:34We've had a centre field scrum.
13:35We've now got another line out.
13:37There's no point just keeping the ball for its sake.
13:40No point hogging it.
13:41You need to do something with it.
13:44And as you can see here, I mean, extra cheese, that is beyond exceptional.
13:485.4.
13:49So every single time they're making it to the 22, they're coming away with more than the value of a
13:54try.
13:55Comparatively, poor.
13:59And part of the frustration for Stephen Jones and the coaches is that they practiced this so much this week.
14:04The focus in training was being clinical by the try line.
14:08Can they convert it here?
14:09McGuigan has a go.
14:12You can see Tom Gordon with his long hair prowling around.
14:18And so too Freddie Clark.
14:20Hooper was up quickly.
14:22Red Bulls go through the middle.
14:24Oh, somebody's lost the boot.
14:29It's not time.
14:30Simon Benitez crews the scrum half and then the charge for the line just kept out, I think.
14:36Adam Brockleback can look at the celebrations.
14:39The defensive celebrations.
14:41Nick, what a tackle.
14:43That's Paul Brown Bampo.
14:45Penalty advantage, that is excellent defence.
14:52That was a winger on a very large prop.
14:56That was like when Antoine Dupont held up somebody with just pure upper body strength.
15:01He wasn't on his own in fairness.
15:02He had a bit of a hand from Roussi Tuima.
15:17Newcastle making a change at fly half and it's a big change because here's Ben Healy.
15:23With a debut for them.
15:26Fly half who's joined on loan from Edinburgh until the end of the season before he heads off to La
15:30Rochelle next season.
15:33And he now very much part of this attacking effort.
15:39Leather Barrow with his cap on.
15:43Abato Yimbo drifted away to the left and lost by Rhys Beekmans.
15:49It's been that kind of night so far.
15:52What a Cam Riddle.
15:54Chiefs left wing.
15:57Beekmans got back quickly to be part of that defensive effort.
16:04Here's Harrison Abato Yimbo.
16:08He was spectacularly good at the gardens last weekend, both of the brothers were.
16:13But right now that's as much as they can do.
16:20Unfortunately that's been the tale for Newcastle.
16:23Two players down, one for the team.
16:24He'll be absolutely thrilled with that because they've just been as hungry in attack as they've been in defence.
16:29And in fairness, that's a great statistic.
16:33That truly tells you everything about the level of commitment.
16:37Newcastle haven't been competent enough with ball in hand.
16:40But you've got to say physically and concentration wise, Exeter Chiefs, they have stayed on task the whole evening.
16:50Exeter are changing their entire front row.
16:55That's Pachukki Chambadza, the Georgian who's now with us.
16:59Julian Heaven, the Aussie hooker.
17:01And Ethan Berger, the South African loose head, taking the place of Scott CEO.
17:07Jack Yandel and Jimmy Roots, who tops the carries charts with 14.
17:14He gets a little pat from Jack Yandel on his way back to the armchair.
17:18Jimmy Roots.
17:20Indecently industrious tonight.
17:22Loads and loads of carrying.
17:24Hunger for work.
17:25Big shots.
17:26Scott CEO, big shots.
17:27Anyone who ran anywhere near.
17:29Straight into Scott CEO.
17:31Got smacked tonight.
17:33He was on it.
17:34Both the props were.
17:35Loads of work.
17:36Job done.
17:39He's a dual international these days.
17:41Wannabe World Cup finalist, but now playing for Salmoa.
17:44Scott CEO, just like his dad did on the first of his two caps after becoming eligible in November.
17:55A bit of a delay here, because Harrison Abatoyimbo was taking some treatment.
18:03I'll tell you what, the quality of Exeter's performance tonight has really helped them.
18:08They were brilliant last week against South Sharks, did what they needed to do.
18:11And because they've been so competent and efficient tonight, they can make early sales.
18:16They've got a monster next week in Europe.
18:19So they've been able to rest, rotate, especially on this long journey.
18:22That'll be super helpful for them.
18:24Yeah, they're actually heading back on the coach tonight.
18:27And they go back to Devon around 5, 6 in the morning they reckon, but get home as quickly as
18:31you can.
18:3218, not bound, swimming outside.
18:34Julian Heaven, the new Aussie hooker, winning his first throw.
18:3818 on the outside, not bound.
18:39Picking out his compatriot, Tom Hooper.
18:44Pachukki Chambadza, another one of those quality signings who's absolutely impacted on this Chiefs side this season.
19:02I think he's good there, yep, thank you.
19:055, 7, no, he said 7, 7 or 5.
19:08How many? 7.
19:10OK, off we go.
19:14Julian Heaven with Vincent at the front, again it's Hooper, Varney.
19:21It's Brambampo, brought to the floor by Christie.
19:27Hooper.
19:29Andrea Zambanin is screaming for it on this near right-hand side and Craig Maxwell-Keyes puts a stop to
19:36everything.
19:37Yeah, that definitely won't get clipped up for socials.
19:45One job, one job.
19:48Send him on, there's still enough time to put some replays we've got on the screen, lovely.
19:55Right in the breadbasket too, even for the tight end, there's no chance I'm going to.
20:00In the meantime, Newcastle are making a change on the left wing.
20:05Harrison Abata-Yimbo has come off.
20:08Mike Hudson, not a face full of sympathy, you would suspect, but anyway,
20:12Ollie Spencer is on, on the wing for Abata-Yimbo, his 50th game for the club.
20:23It's all gone a bit hard, which is exactly what Chiefs would have hoped for on the long trip up
20:32here.
20:38Newcastle have got La Rochelle here in the last 16 of the Challenge Cup next Saturday.
20:44Rigg.
20:47Riddle with the loose ball, but still picked up by Brown Bampo.
20:50However, the loose ball went forwards.
20:54So lost forward in the offload.
20:56Talk about Paul Brown Bampo, Oogs, from a, from a world-class wing perspective.
21:02What do you, what do you see?
21:03I think some of the attributes we can almost delineate two things.
21:08One thing is the athletic animal that you're working with and then it's the rugby profile on top of it.
21:13You just only need to look at him to, to know and understand that he has everything that you need
21:19physically and athletically to be able to thrive at a top level.
21:22This is second season.
21:24I think people forget that, which is quite remarkable.
21:27We had such a brilliant breakout season last year, especially, I mean, he's going to be 24 later on this
21:33year.
21:33I think he's thriving.
21:34I think the decision-making of when to get involved in the game defensively, airily, defensively and attacking is becoming
21:42a more consistent, complete player.
21:45And the way in which the Chiefs play, I think brings out the very best in him.
21:49Two tries tonight, I think he's played very well, yet again.
21:54Manny Fea, by the way, not far off from playing again.
21:58He's, um, he's out there training down at Sandy Park.
22:01He's got that hamstring that kept him out of the Six Nations.
22:05Spoilt for choice.
22:07Chiefs very short.
22:08You'll have seen that, um, Oli Fletcher is coming in the middle of that Newcastle squad for George McGuigan.
22:15Heads in the right space, then keep them stable, please.
22:18There we go.
22:20Bit of a balance issue happening here.
22:22It'd be easy to just presume that because Chiefs changed the whole front row, the new ones are causing the
22:29problem.
22:30But Newcastle have changed two of theirs too.
22:32For me, they're just putting a little bit of early weight on Newcastle, just causes a balance issue.
22:37Chimbansi on the tight head for Chiefs, the big Georgian.
22:39Very, very chilled pre-set-up, very little movement.
22:43Look, he doesn't really mind where you are.
22:46He'll just fold in and be strong.
22:49That's a bit tidier.
22:50We're going to get some more scrum chat in a minute because Claire is down with Jack Yendel.
22:55He's been replaced, but we'll be going to those two in a moment or two.
23:03Trying to change things for the good for Newcastle.
23:06Not close, but not close enough.
23:08Forces the penalty.
23:09Side-enter, great now.
23:12Nice, right, he's got!
23:13Square-up.
23:24He's done brilliantly to keep that ball in.
23:27Ollie Woodburn, that ball does go out.
23:31So let's get some chat between Claire and Jack.
23:37Jack, Rob Baxter said in the week that there's no such thing as a regulation win at Kingston Park.
23:41It's always tough up here, but it looks as though things have gone according to plan for an hour.
23:46Yeah, to be fair, we started the game with some intensity.
23:49You saw some of the shots going in early doors from lunatics like Jimmy.
23:53The diesel engine was powering.
23:54With the price of fuel these days, we're pretty happy with that.
23:57Had you identified in the week that if you put them under enough pressure in their own 22,
24:00there would be opportunities out wide?
24:02I think the big focus, which is really cliche, was getting our bits right.
24:06And I think we started to do that really well.
24:08And it's just, it's important when you're away from home not to give teams ins.
24:11And you know, we did that really well.
24:12Our attitude was good, but also our discipline was good.
24:14We didn't allow many sort of free penalties from the fifth corner in the start place.
24:18Six tries for your backs.
24:19But there's some big boys sat down here who would argue that they actually gave them the platform for those.
24:23Is that fair?
24:24I would agree with that, absolutely.
24:26By the front row club, you know, we obviously do all the work and they just get the rewards.
24:29Right, well, I have to ask you because you've just offered to explain this to viewers back home.
24:33What is the Cam Riddle celebration that we saw earlier?
24:35So he's absolutely rapid, as you can tell.
24:38Nice long legs and nice and gangly and he runs like an ostrich.
24:41So obviously every time he scores, you just fold it and get the ostrich up.
24:45The ostrich, there you go, guys.
24:46The best celebration on the pitch this evening, Jack.
24:48Congratulations on a good innings and yeah, we'll see you again soon.
24:51It's taken a long time.
24:52I'm going to be split.
24:53For the inside.
24:53I won't set it until we're clearly in a good position.
24:56The ostrich.
24:58He had that diesel gag planned, didn't he?
25:00Yeah.
25:00One.
25:01That sounded like one of yours.
25:06Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
25:07This is celebration.
25:08Welcome to the Grosvenor.
25:09My name's David Flattman.
25:13My 350th dinner of the year.
25:17Crouch.
25:17Where was the ostrich?
25:28The ostrich watch is on with some interest.
25:31As do we all.
25:35Will Hayden Wood is on.
25:42Harvey Skinner at fly half.
25:49There's a good bit of pressure from Adam Brocklebank on the loose head.
25:56Chambadzi on the tight head for Chiefs, looked in a nice position.
26:00Newcastle really put it on in a missed touch again.
26:12And that's anybody, so it's punched back by...
26:14Bantzitz.
26:16There you go.
26:16Abate Yimbe.
26:17First back, second knock on.
26:19He comes from behind him.
26:22That was a goalkeeper's punch, wasn't it, that?
26:29Let's go, let's go.
26:36Here we go.
26:38Open hand, open hand.
26:48Second.
26:49In the final quarter.
26:51Yes, ready?
26:51Just the one try in this second half so far.
26:54Scored by Stephen Varney.
26:56Exeter sixth.
27:00Bampo and Riddle remain on two each.
27:03Holly Woodburn got one in the middle of all that.
27:05Christian Wade, with all that Newcastle have had to offer so far.
27:09Taken on by Tom Cairns, he's with us as well.
27:12Exeter absolutely using this opportunity to save legs ahead of
27:17Munster at Sandy Park in the Challenge Cup next weekend.
27:24All the way through for Hurl.
27:27Sammy Arnold, Max Clarke, Connor Doherty all injured tonight.
27:32Leather Barrel.
27:33He won't stop running, even after they turn the lights out here later.
27:38Likewise, Tom Gordon, busy Kiwi, who put himself about to good effect a week ago.
27:44That performance against the Saints a week ago,
27:48feeling more than a week ago right now.
27:52Yeah, this game's got quite loose now, hasn't it?
27:56Just lost a little bit of purpose.
28:01Chiefs know the job is done.
28:02He's been waiting for them to find the space to this side.
28:04The Newcastle whilst there's 16 minutes left.
28:11Temporary head coach Stephen Jones.
28:13This is second Prem game in charge, first at home after replacing Alan Dickens.
28:18Now I'm sure you all know by now that it is the Gallagher Prem's big match Bonanza weekend.
28:25Villa Park, Principality Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where would you rather go if you can go to any of those?
28:33Go to Tottenham, buzz and flats.
28:36Tottenham.
28:37We're all going to Tottenham.
28:38We're going to Tottenham.
28:39But the other matches will be worth watching as well.
28:41Oh, and straight through the middle.
28:43This is the break for Beekmans.
28:48Picked up by Clarke.
28:50Former Gloucester man involved in the Premiership for the first time in a while.
28:54Wade.
28:56If he could have controlled it.
29:00He'd have had another tonight.
29:02Lovely idea, nearly came off.
29:04I just wondered after the break.
29:08Just riddle.
29:09Tip of the line.
29:11Didn't stay in contact, did he?
29:12Didn't hit and stick.
29:13So the break was good.
29:15I just wondered if you got both front rowers, both props handling the ball in midfield,
29:19if that took a little bit of sting out of the attack.
29:21But jeez, it nearly came off.
29:23Loved the option from Healy.
29:25I think he's going to be a quacking time until the end of the season.
29:30Picked away by Heaven, and then lost off the hands of Roosie Touima.
29:37Actually, a word for Rhys Beekmans as well in midfield tonight.
29:41His first Premiership start this evening, the 20-year-old after his debut back in October.
29:48But coaches love him.
29:50I think he's got a nice future ahead of him, Rhys Beekmans.
29:59Stability across, heads and shoulders up, in the space.
30:04That's not Rhys Beekmans, by the way.
30:06No, not quite.
30:07I think he's going to have a big role to play right now.
30:10There he is.
30:10You see Ben Healy sat in the pocket of Christian Way, Beekmans being front line.
30:15They'll look to him, I think, whether it be Decoy running so hard,
30:21trying to condense that extra Chiefs line.
30:24Arley Spencer, you'll have seen on this left wing, had his hands out to make sure that
30:29the other 14 know all about him.
30:31Beekmans lays it back.
30:33Healy, Wade coming in, he was read by Brown Bampo, one very good winger on another.
30:42Oscar Usher.
30:47Flipped up by McCallum, who came on up half-time for Richard Palfreman.
30:59And it is McCallum, and it's Healy and Obata Yimbo, held on to determinedly by Rigg.
31:11Once more, it's Freddie Clarke.
31:14Back in the trend for the first time in five months now.
31:22Beekmans, Healy, this is Gordon.
31:34Callum goes in to make sure it's Newcastle ball once more.
31:41Just count how long it's taking to get that ball back though and tip your hat in the direction of
31:46Chiefs defence.
31:47It's the weight of the tackle.
31:49I think some of Newcastle's ball presentation and respect for the ball hasn't been brilliant,
31:54but a lot of it has been assisted by the sheer weight of tackle, quality of tackle.
32:00Can I tell you what, we're not seeing a lot of like upper limb.
32:13That was a good two-man tackle.
32:17Oscar Usher coming off distinctly second best.
32:20I wonder where this contact was.
32:21I mean, he's gone straight through shoulder and ball.
32:26It's Finn, Worley, Brady who went in.
32:31It's Usher who's heading off.
32:38There are some very, very heavy shots coming in, that's for sure.
32:47But also, as Newcastle are trying to get things going,
32:54as we see so much of the ball being flashed to somebody who's reasonably flat to the line,
32:59with options either side of him and pulling that ball back out the back.
33:02That first ball carrier needs to be a legitimate threat.
33:05Or the defenders just don't bother with him.
33:07And actually that ball out the back, if they've tried it 30 times,
33:10it's worked about twice tonight in terms of fixing front line tight defence.
33:15And actually moving the ball to a bit of space out wide and the defence can't keep up.
33:19It just hasn't generated any pace, has it?
33:21It hasn't.
33:22And sometimes, the number one thing I think you have to do with any side,
33:26which Chiefs have done brilliantly tonight, is just challenging physically.
33:31Shapes and patterns and lovely hands at the line is great.
33:34But challenge a team physically, wear them down, erode them,
33:38puncture them, and then you can put all the nice little bits and pieces on it.
33:49I think Newcastle are so down on numbers, having lost Oscar Usher,
33:55but there might be a loose head pushing in the second row here.
34:01It's an Exeter ball.
34:07It's an Exeter penalty.
34:08Same as the penalty you win.
34:14Interesting that, Chambadzi on the tight head, just watch on this side,
34:17right in front of the ref. There's a bit of an angle being worked.
34:21He's straight in on the hooker. I think if you're a Chiefs fan,
34:25you say that's lovely stuff, that's great scrummaging.
34:27And the Newcastle loose head, Adam Brockelbank has kicked his hips out
34:30and separated himself. If you're a Newcastle Red Bulls fan,
34:34you say Chambadzi's angled in onto the hooker there,
34:37evidence by the hooker popping up in the air.
34:39Keep going, lads, tip of the line.
34:41It could have gone either way, but I do like rewarding,
34:43aggressive scrummaging, so I'm happy with that.
34:47I have absolutely no idea.
34:49Knock on by White.
34:49That didn't go to plan.
34:51Knock on by White, yeah.
34:53It was then knocked on.
34:55Line-out's over, right, it's at the front.
34:57Off the Chiefs hands.
34:59This allowed back on his feet.
35:04What happened here, that's what happened there.
35:07Knocked on.
35:07Knocked on by Ross Vincent.
35:10Caught in by Hamish Smiles.
35:13And I must correct.
35:14It was six tries he conceded against Chris Ashton.
35:18Not four, not five.
35:20You are ruthless.
35:22Oh, man.
35:22Ruthless.
35:23Have you ever in your whole career, from child to lion,
35:28have your opposite number score six tries, Uggs?
35:31Yeah, I'd retire, and become a ref.
35:34Can we just say, by way of balance,
35:36that Hamish Smiles is the loveliest man in the world,
35:38and does not deserve what he's getting from us tonight.
35:41It's not what I thought he can't defend.
35:46Sorry.
35:48Simon Benitez-Cruz trying to keep the Falcons going.
35:52The Red Bulls, rather, that's a fine.
35:57Healy, Abato Yimbo, being chased hard by Oli Spencer,
36:02and it might yet work, but Woodburn was there, the other Oli.
36:09I like Oli.
36:10I like him a lot as a player, he's composed.
36:13He's under so much pressure, but found time by being strong
36:18and being a decent pivot for his team to give him a solid platform.
36:27The second half that's delivered just the one try so far.
36:32After the half a dozen in the first half,
36:34Stephen Varney's sixth try for Exeter,
36:38and Ethan Berger takes it on.
36:41South African last weekend's loose head replacement,
36:45Will Goodrick Clark hasn't made the trip up because he has a foot injury.
36:51Skyro come back round, just stay on the side.
36:54Same as the penalty over there, 19.
36:57Stand up and come back rather than come for the gate.
37:01Such good aggressive exiting from Chiefs.
37:03That flat line there from Will Rigg was damaging.
37:06That's what put Newcastle on the back foot,
37:09forced the concession of the penalty.
37:11But the box kick that was regained from Brown Bampo,
37:15the aggression in the carry.
37:16Yes, there are a load of points up.
37:18So they can attack with confidence from near their own line,
37:20but they've done it so well.
37:22They looked in the last few phases like they looked in the first few phases of the match.
37:33Tom Cairns goes racing back, Hayden Wood finds the width,
37:38and once again Will Rigg's done that all night.
37:42Newcastle are getting themselves a proper heavy workhorse in midfield next season.
37:50Woodburn held it up nicely to pick out Tuwema,
37:54another player who will be on Newcastle's payroll next season.
38:01Julie in heaven with the latest surge forwards.
38:09This is Lily, now John, Dan John.
38:19Cairns to Wally Brady.
38:24Premiership player for a little under a week now, debut last Saturday.
38:29This is Lily.
38:32It's been stripped away and Healy off that left boot.
38:36He's asking an awful lot of Ollie Spencer who ran the race,
38:42but he was always second favourite with Dan John way ahead of him.
38:47Taken up by Heaven.
38:50The fourth Prem game for the Aussie.
38:53That's gone forwards.
38:56We're not going to be taking this second half to the picture framers, are we?
38:59I tell you, there's some tired bodies right now.
39:03But you're right Nick, it's not been a thing of beauty, it's been fractured.
39:09It's been a half an hour since the last try.
39:13Anyway, well Chiefs have really upped the intensity in the last five minutes, they've just
39:19forgotten to bring the skills with them, they've forgotten to bring the ball with them.
39:23We do have a moment of excitement here, however, because Ugo's about to unveil the shortlist for Gallagher, player of
39:31the match.
39:31And they're all Chiefs, funnily enough.
39:33You've got the try-scorers in Cam, Riddle, Paul Brown, Bampo.
39:36I think they finished very, very well, but Zambanin, Hooper and Jimmy Roos.
39:42I mean, I could have honestly listed many more.
39:45I thought Varney, I mean the halfbacks there have controlled really well.
39:49So many more, but I've had to condense it down into five and I've picked those.
40:08I think Tom Hooper's been all over the place again, and the work that Rob Baxter talked about,
40:19the forwards platform that Rob Baxter talked about when we spoke to him, just setting the tone.
40:24There you go.
40:25Allowing the wingers to do their stuff.
40:26They're heading in the right place.
40:27I think Tom Hooper's the sort of player that would suit any professional rugby team on the planet.
40:32The work he does would suit any style of play in any league.
40:36He was man of the match last week, so I don't know if that will count against him.
40:41Second!
40:43Well I'm thrilled that the wingers are contenders, but if Chiefs are going to be successful,
40:48this season will be the big units up front that dictate it.
40:53I think they've been brilliant.
40:55Mindset, application, intensity, execution, they've had it all tonight.
41:00Oh, it's been lost by Healy.
41:02It was not an appealing pass in fairness.
41:07Dan John gives it some leather, taken on by Spencer eventually.
41:17No, that was a hanging pass from a lovely player.
41:25It's instructive to talk to Stephen Jones at the moment about his challenge over what's happening
41:32between now and the end of the season.
41:33The coach's job's Mickey Ward's job.
41:36And he talks about continuing to educate, to improve players between now and the end of the season,
41:42and just win as many games as you can.
41:44It's that simple.
41:45Exactly that.
41:46And I'll tell you what, I mean, I've worked with Stephen Jones, played with him.
41:50He's a super bright guy.
41:54Emotionally, constantly neutral, never too high, never too low.
41:57And I think there's so much that he can pass on to this team, a brilliant way in which he
42:04can guide them
42:05and give a sense of stability.
42:06That's probably been the one thing, Lackham, in third, third head coach just this season.
42:12Not yet.
42:12Hopefully just that one voice is something that they can tune into and get a tune out of this team
42:19out of.
42:21Taken on by Spencer at Newcastle, have a new scrum half.
42:24James Elliott's replaced Simon Benitez-Cruz.
42:29Here he is, to Ben Healy.
42:33Taken on by Connor Hancock.
42:46He's gone half, Elliott.
42:47Oh, doing well with 10.
42:50Can't run to that ball and take the red balls up to the 10 metre line.
42:55Once again, Exeter think their hard work over the ball will win it.
42:59Not quite.
42:59Healy had some momentum.
43:05And in the middle of that was Hancock.
43:07This is Gordon.
43:09Gordon finding some space, Leatherbarrow couldn't get it away quickly enough.
43:13So knocked on in to touch them.
43:15I reckon that's just a knock line.
43:16I think he probably went for the tackle then.
43:19So save us the one in the first half.
43:20Live is in the tackle.
43:21We'll be corrected if we're clearly wrong.
43:25I think this is just a knock on really nice on the edges here.
43:29Good patience in defence.
43:33Take the line out.
43:37Line out.
43:39It's a knock on in to touch.
43:41Down ball.
43:41It always looks worse in slow mode, doesn't it?
43:43But you're good on you.
43:46Benefit the doubt.
43:59You need to drop someone lads.
44:02Christian Wade with his first in the Gallagher Prem this season.
44:05His first for Newcastle.
44:07First for ten months.
44:10A little bit closer to Chris Ashton's record.
44:13Still got time for one more.
44:17Beatmans takes it on.
44:18Newcastle have still got time for one more.
44:20Ollie Fletcher.
44:21The hooker adding some momentum.
44:24Christie.
44:28Some proper thrust.
44:33Away to the right hand side.
44:34Wade's on his toes in those flashy new boots of his.
44:39But not quite enough just then.
44:42But that's how close they are.
44:44Whipped away by the scrum half Elliot.
44:48Gordon's there.
44:52Look at Ollie Leatherbarrow under his cap.
44:56Exeter offside.
44:58This free Newcastle ball.
44:59And then driven towards the line.
45:02You're on penalty.
45:03McAllen wasn't far away.
45:08Adam Brocklebank away to the right hand side.
45:11And he's seen a try.
45:12Craig Maxwell keys.
45:17And over they go.
45:18And who gets up?
45:21It's Connor Hancock.
45:31Identical twin brother Callum.
45:33A tight head not involved tonight.
45:35Which is a happy coincidence for us.
45:38Because Falcons ran a competition on their Instagram feed.
45:44At the start of the season.
45:45Saying how can you tell these two brothers apart?
45:48And Connor and Callum's dad got in touch.
45:51And said one has got teeth.
45:52The other hasn't.
45:55And it is Connor who has got a deficit of teeth apparently.
46:00But anyway.
46:01Big smile on his face.
46:02And he has a try.
46:11Say again.
46:12I end the game.
46:13I end the game.
46:14In the game.
46:15Craig Maxwell keys asks if he can end the game.
46:18And he can.
46:20The smile on the face of Rob Baxter.
46:23And on the smile of those Chiefs all head home.
46:25That was a puzzling frustrating Newcastle performance.
46:29After all we saw at Franklin's Gardens a week ago.
46:33In the end just the two tries for them.
46:34Christian Wade in the first half.
46:36And then late late on.
46:38Connor Hancock the prop.
46:41And then the tries for Brown Bampo with two.
46:44Cam Riddle with two.
46:45Ollie Woodburn and Stephen Varney.
46:46Were the Chiefs sole score in the second half.
46:49They've done all the hard work in the first.
