00:00Giants as they start their half of the fifth trailing the Yankees 7-0 on opening day.
00:05Pleasure to be joined by Commissioner Rob Manfred in the booth.
00:08Happy opening day, Mr. Commissioner. This is pretty good stuff.
00:11Thanks, man. Great opening day. I mean, it's absolutely fantastic.
00:14We have so many questions.
00:17I mean, Hunter and CeCe and I, we were going into it.
00:20Let's ask the commissioner about this and about this and about this.
00:23Here's the first one. What was your first opening day? I'm just curious.
00:26My very first opening day was a Mets opener in, it had to have been, 88 or 89.
00:34As a fan?
00:35Yeah. I was working for baseball as an outside lawyer.
00:38The Mets used to have a big party, a bunch of commissioner's office people would get invited, and that was
00:43the first one.
00:45So, Commissioner, I want to ask you, on the heels of kind of that first opening day, when did you
00:50fall in love with baseball?
00:51Let's go back even further. What was kind of that journey?
00:54Oh, the first, I mean, my first major league game was in 1968.
00:59We drove down from upstate New York to see a Yankee game.
01:02My dad was a huge Yankee fan.
01:04It was old-timers day on Saturday, and it was, man, to his last year, I was a huge Mano
01:10fan.
01:11He hit two home runs in the game.
01:13It was the last time he ever hit two home runs.
01:15He actually hit a home run from each side of the plate.
01:17So, yeah, it was a pretty good start.
01:19A home run from each side of Mick the Mick.
01:22Now, they did lose to Minnesota 3-2.
01:25But what we remember is that's a great way to start off being a fan.
01:31Yeah.
01:31Yeah.
01:32So, it was really fun.
01:33Really, really fun.
01:35Full count to Patrick Bailey, 3-2.
01:37Now you've got to answer CeCe's questions.
01:38These are the hard ones.
01:40No, my main statement or question was, can we get a 10-run rule?
01:45I don't want to say, but WBC got a 10-run rule.
01:48WBC has got to be like, we need a 10-run rule.
01:52You know what?
01:53I took one rule from the WBC, which was the extra inning rule,
01:57and I take more static about that than any other rule change.
02:01I'm not really doing the 10-run thing.
02:03That rule is a success in rule changes.
02:06That one's known as broadcaster's delight.
02:08Yeah.
02:10Broadcasters like it.
02:11The fans like it.
02:13My traditionalists are still not on board with that one.
02:16Harrison Bader with a high-end field pop that Jazz Chisholm will have.
02:20It was so far, so good for ABS.
02:22I think the response has been great.
02:24Yep.
02:24The uniform personnel, players, and coaches are on board,
02:27and we've already had one tonight.
02:29Yeah, I think that, you know, using it in the minor leagues,
02:33getting the players to have a chance to get used to it,
02:37doing it in spring training the year before this, I think really important.
02:41And, you know, there's something fundamental about the desire to get it right
02:45in high-leverage situations.
02:46And if you, you know, you look at the fundamentals,
02:49I think it's a great change for us.
02:51Two quick outs now for Luis to rise.
02:53And, you know, I think a lot of fans would have thought that the umpires would have given you pushback
02:58on that,
02:58but they, too, want to get things right.
03:01It's the spirit of instant replay, of review.
03:03I agree with that.
03:04The umpires have been great in terms about changes in the game that affect that.
03:10They really have been really cooperative.
03:12Mr. Commissioner, we want to thank you for joining us.
03:14Quick inning, but happy opening day.
03:16I know you're busy.
03:16Off to L.A. for the ring ceremony for the Dodgers tomorrow.
03:20And best of luck.
03:21All right.
03:21Thanks, man.
03:222026 is underway.
03:24With the Commissioner Rob Van for joining us in the boots.
03:27Mid-game, and this call to the bullpen for expert leap is presented by Intuit TurboTax.
03:33It's Keaton Wynn who is the first in out of the Giants' bullpen on this opening day.
03:38A guy who got into a few spring training contests, just seven innings of work, gave up five runs.
03:45And Wynn is the first option for Tony Bitello in a 7-0 deficit top of the sixth inning.
03:50And Keaton Wynn, he's a guy who's got a big split finger, real power arm.
03:54He's going to see a lot of sinkers up at 98 miles an hour.
03:57And had himself a pretty solid spring.
03:59Pretty impressive to make the team.
04:05He's the coming of this game and just right the ship.
04:07And then get the boys back.
04:08Just give him back in so he can just keep swinging the back, man.
04:11He's the guy that's going to attack the zone for sure.
04:13He's not going to walk a lot of people.
04:14He pitches to contact.
04:17Quickly in front of Wells 1 and 2.
04:21That's something I think a lot of people don't do these days.
04:23It's pitch to contact.
04:25Having a chance to throw the ball over the plate.
04:27Pitching to contact.
04:28Getting to be contacted.
04:29Loosely contact.
04:31This is something that, you know, I feel like the better guys, the better starters,
04:35the better relievers in the game do it, but not a lot of guys do it.
04:38Pitch to contact.
04:40Come on, Steve.
04:41He's going to strike everybody out.
04:44Before they even get in the box.
04:45I want to see Bill Miller lean back.
04:48104 miles an hour.
04:50Blow it out for two and a third.
04:52You know, go to the next guy.
04:53That's kind of what a lot of people think pitching has devolved into in this state.
04:59There are a lot of folks like CeCe trying to bring it back.
05:03And it's still two and two to Austin Wells, who's got a couple of big hits here tonight.
05:08Nice play on top.
05:09Upper deck.
05:10Long-handed.
05:11Nice.
05:12Fans are appreciating it.
05:14Staying locked in.
05:16Two balls and two strikes on Austin Wells.
05:20That's outside.
05:20Three two.
05:21Commissioner Manfred was talking about the World Baseball Classic when he dropped by for a quick visit last half inning.
05:27I don't know that anybody enjoyed the WBC more than Austin Wells.
05:31By virtue of his mother's lineages.
05:34Played for Team Dominican Republic.
05:36Hit a big homer.
05:39And was like an honorary rice and beans guy.
05:42At least that's what his manager, Albert Pujols, called him.
05:48Honorary, what's an honorary rice and beans guy?
05:50Was he making it or eating it?
05:52He was kind of a kind of guy.
05:53And a not-native Spanish speaker who was welcomed warmly by his Dominican teammates.
05:59And this one just missed it right.
06:01He almost got himself his first homer right here.
06:03Two for two already.
06:10Something of a renaissance man, too.
06:12He's, like you, Hunter, enjoys the foodie culture.
06:17Oh, yeah.
06:18Is that right?
06:19He's a big burrito blogger.
06:21Okay.
06:22I've got to follow this.
06:23I'm a burrito fan as well.
06:26And he takes the ball forward to leave things off in the sixth inning.
06:30Well, for first-year manager, Tony Vitale, not the start he envisioned.
06:34He is in good company as one of eight first-year managers in big league baseball this year, as we
06:39talked about.
06:40Lauren has a little bit more on that.
06:41I'm Matty.
06:42I spoke to Jace Tingler, Tony's bench coach.
06:45And he said day one, Tony was doing his media duties.
06:48Then he would sprint over to teach base running.
06:50Then he's hitting the PFPs, running over to the cage to dissect swings.
06:54We have to remember in college, right, coaches have smaller staffs.
06:57They have to do so much more with so much less.
07:00And he has an out in right field.
07:02So, Tony said, this is the big leagues.
07:05And his staff said, you don't have to do everything anymore.
07:08We got people for that night.
07:11I guess that's the biggest difference, too, Lauren, because when we visited with Tony, he talked about so many resources
07:18that we take for granted in the big leagues, being available at the college game as well.
07:22But it's that manpower support, that human support, that really has been the big difference for him.
07:29And here's a lot of manpower stepping in now in Aaron Judge.
07:32And this is a matchup for Judge.
07:34The sinker split goes right into his bat path.
07:37This is dangerous.
07:38He's outside.
07:41Judge is over three or three strikeouts, too.
07:43I know he's looking to barrel something up.
07:44So, it's probably a little cranky.
07:53Judge never went through a four-strikeout game last year.
07:57And it's a ball and a strike.
08:03And, by the way, he has hit safely in all nine of his opening days as a Yankee.
08:10So, that's on the line tonight.
08:15All the two strikes.
08:20And you mentioned the three-strike guys.
08:24Peter, change up.
08:28And just swinging in the fourth.
08:36And if you're keeping winning right here, you know, it's a seven-run game.
08:39You want to get back in here.
08:40But it's the right time to challenge him, test your stuff.
08:44See if you can put one of the greatest hitters in the game this way.
08:54Two and two, the count's Aaron Judge.
08:57There have only been two Yankees in franchise history
09:01to have endured four strikeout opening days.
09:07Four strikeouts in the game known as the Sombrero, the Golden Sombrero.
09:12Oswaldo Cabrera in 2023 against these Giants.
09:16And previous years, Giancarlo Stanton had a four-strikeout opening day against the Red Sox.
09:30Two balls and two strikes to judge.
09:39And that Aaron is on that list.
09:43So, this title goes to Keaton Wynn.
09:46And they're putting the Golden Sombrero on their head.
09:50Giants fans, something to chill about.
09:52Got to give him a lot of credit right here.
09:53Came right after him, you know, from a fastball right there, right down the middle.
09:57Probably, you know, kind of surprised judge.
09:59Probably thought he was going up.
10:01But got a fastball right at the knees.
10:03If I told you guys that a suggested narrative today would be
10:07Yankees score seven runs in five innings
10:10and Aaron Judge strikes out four times, you would have said what?
10:13Opening day.
10:15I would have said absolutely not.
10:17There's no way.
10:18There's no way.
10:18But just a testament to the way these guys, you know, put together the lineup.
10:22Like I said, four, five, and six is going to be huge for those guys.
10:25The bottom of the lineup, four hits in a row.
10:29So, it's just a testament to how deep this lineup and how good it is.
10:34Going to the cancer, Cody Bellinger.
10:36They don't lead the league in runs on the heels.
10:39Even though you have an MVP, it takes a team.
10:42It is a deep lineup.
10:44And there are no holes in the bottom of the order really stepped up here
10:48against Logan Webb today.
10:50Keith Wynn trying to strand that leadoff walk at first base.
10:54He will do just that.
10:56With back-to-back strikeouts of a couple of MVP bats.
11:03Three, five and a half.
11:05Our guest, pretty familiar with that little tract of space
11:09as we're back in a 7-0 lead for the New York Yankees,
11:13bottom of the sixth inning.
11:15Matt Chatman, the first to face.
11:16Matt Esprit is going to welcome Barry Bonds into the booth.
11:19Enjoy John's pregame show.
11:20Barry, that looked like you guys were having fun out there.
11:22We had a good time.
11:23I think it was really good.
11:25The three of us worked together.
11:27We worked well.
11:27We had CeCe come in there.
11:29It was fun.
11:30Get a picture.
11:30You've got to get a picture in a minute.
11:33Really?
11:35It's not hard to talk baseball.
11:37What's your thoughts of the game?
11:38What are you watching so far here today?
11:40What's popped out for you?
11:42I'm watching just day one right now, right?
11:44It's the first game.
11:45Things are happening.
11:46You know, Willie, you know, I saw the first and third,
11:49less than two outs.
11:50We should have got that running.
11:51Could have gave the Giants momentum at that time.
11:56Aaron, I don't know.
11:57I think somebody's thinking a little bit too much up there
12:00at the plate right now, so just letting it go.
12:02But we can't take it.
12:04We can't analyze day one.
12:05Yeah, he's a little in between right now,
12:06but it's the first day.
12:07Yeah, it's the first day.
12:09Two balls and a strike to Matt Chapman.
12:11Chopper for Jack.
12:13Hot shot.
12:14And he makes the catch.
12:15That got on there on the line.
12:16And he's telling Jose Cowboy, do you see that?
12:20Yeah, Chapman, he's got some.
12:22It doesn't look like he swings that hard,
12:24but he's got those forearms that are crazy.
12:26That was 107 off Matt Chapman's bat right here on the low line.
12:30Look, that's just a four-arm flick.
12:33Jack's still in the last ball.
12:35I've never seen a guy get ate up on a line drive.
12:38Put a glove on that, Paul.
12:42I could watch Jazz Chisholm play.
12:44I mean, he plays with such joy.
12:46He is so much fun to watch.
12:47He's a perfect Yankee man.
12:50Yeah.
12:50He is, and he brings that speed and power combination that they need,
12:53you know, in the lineup.
12:55And a guy that can steal some bags and, you know, like he said,
12:58try to go 50-50.
12:59I like that.
13:00He said, well, I should put the stars and lay on the moon.
13:04Speaking of 50-50 and, you know, 50 home run kind of guys, Barry,
13:08what are some of your memories,
13:10and did you set goals before you went into the season?
13:13Were you like, I'm going to hit this amount of homers?
13:14What was kind of your take on going into the seasons?
13:18Well, you know, like I said, I had my dad and William a long time.
13:21My dad just said, hey, if you can do it once, you can do it twice.
13:23So consistency is what makes the game.
13:26But if you're going to hit 300, you should be able to keep what you've got.
13:31Rafi Devers with a line shot for Judge, a well hit at number two.
13:35When you came here, Barry,
13:37there was so much discussion with the Yankees being interested.
13:40Do you ever think back in a what-if sense?
13:43What if I was a Yankee?
13:45That short porch, you might have hit 1,000 home runs.
13:48I got to tell you a story because George isn't here anymore,
13:51so I can tell the truth, right?
13:55Well, I would have been the Yankees,
13:57but Steinbrenner got on the phone and he called us and they told me,
14:01Barry, we're going to give you the money, the highest paid player at that time,
14:06but you have to sign the contract by 2 o'clock this afternoon.
14:08And I said, excuse me?
14:10And I just hung the phone up.
14:12Wow.
14:12And I went to go get lunch.
14:14And my, you know, Dennis Gilbert, my agent,
14:16they were like, what do you know you just did?
14:17I'm like, did you know what he just said?
14:19I just said, forget it.
14:21And I went to go.
14:21By the time I walked down the street to go get lunch,
14:23I just said, let me just think about this.
14:25The Giants called me and I said, I'm going home.
14:31Yeah.
14:33I think that's going to get pushed around on social media a little bit, that story.
14:37It's the truth.
14:38That's exactly what I was told.
14:41T-Mobile members get free.
14:43MLB.TV.
14:48It's a beautiful night in San Francisco.
14:51Coit Tower in the distance here at Oracle Park.
14:54It's been all about the visiting New York Yankees on top 7-0.
14:58Giants on their second reliever of the contest.
15:01He is a former Yankee right-hander JT Brubaker taking over here in the seventh.
15:08And it's pitched to Ben Rice, misses the plate, it's 2-0.
15:12And for Brubaker, it's a four-pitch mix.
15:14He's got the sinker, slider, change-up, and curveball, uses them all.
15:18Mainly the sinker, though, 50% sinkers.
15:24And he falls behind three balls and no strikes.
15:28Brubaker got into a handful of games as a Yankee last year
15:32and was designated for assignment in August.
15:36Signed a minor league deal with the Giants two weeks later.
15:39He got some big lead time in San Francisco last season.
15:43He's in the zone for 3-1 now to Rice.
15:49Longtime Pirate.
15:56And on the appeal, he swung the bat.
16:02I think Ben is going to have to third base.
16:06I think he's got the walk.
16:11I said Ben, like, took those pads off rather confidently.
16:14So I took the head fake from the third base umpire.
16:17And Rice is aboard on the walk.
16:22So now Jean-Carlos Stanton with the leadoff hitter aboard.
16:26Leadoff hitter has reached base now in three straight innings for the Yankees.
16:34Every Yankee has reached base to save Aaron Judge tonight.
16:38Seven runs on nine hits.
16:43And this is this type of lineup, man, with the power that they have,
16:46but the patience that they have, it just drives you crazy at the pitcher.
16:50Like, you go home after the game, you just spin.
16:52You know what I mean?
16:53Like, you're just trying to figure out ways to get strikes, get weak contact,
16:57and they're just so patient, make you get in the zone.
17:00And when you do, they put the barrel on it.
17:03And it's been clean.
17:04And Jean-Carlos, I'm sure the Yankees are excited to see how on everything.
17:08It's just been coming off his bat hot.
17:09But a lot of line drives, a lot of healthy swings on balance.
17:15Stanton, two for three, with an RBI tonight.
17:20Major League Baseball's active home run leader, 453.
17:26An appropriate conversation after our visit with Barry Botts.
17:30Stanton, 40th on the all-time home run list.
17:34Stanton, 40th on the all-time home run list.
17:382-2.
17:39Yes, he did.
17:42And that time, Big G unable to hold up.
17:47Pretty impressive, though.
17:49Just another math major, but I believe that's 47 home runs away from 500.
17:54And right here gets the slider away in the dirt.
17:59Unable to hold up what looks like a go.
18:04Yeah, close, though.
18:05That's pretty close.
18:05That is close.
18:06500 get you in the hole?
18:07I think so.
18:08They sure used to.
18:09Right?
18:09Those thresholds changed a little bit, but I think that's a pretty big number.
18:14And another first pitch base hit by a Yankee, Jazz Chisholm's first knock of the night.
18:24Five of the ten Yankee hits have come on the first pitch tonight.
18:33Yeah, we'll take a look right here, and this, this wasn't even the first pitch fastball.
18:37He gets a breaking ball up out over the plate, and he was there.
18:40There was no flinch or anything, just back-legging like he was looking curveball.
18:45It's all good, healthy hack.
18:47That was a little bit about that.
18:49That was a casual year on that.
18:51Singled in a run back in that five-run second.
18:55As a starting pitcher, you see the boys swinging it back like this, opening night.
18:59You're like, oh, yeah, this is going to be a good summer.
19:02That's a good memory.
19:04And to Max's credit, you get a, you know, you mentioned, you get ahead.
19:08He has just suffocated the Jones offense.
19:10It's possible double play ball, and that was to rise back to Schmidt.
19:14Then he got them both.
19:17The runner left stranded.
19:19Still a 7-0 lead for the Yankees.
19:23As we head into the seventh inning stretch, Jason Bateman gives us a closer to seventh inning stretch.
19:29Five in the second, two more in the fifth, and the rest of it has been a nasty max free.
19:36He's limiting the Giants to just two base hits in this game on opening day.
19:41Freed back to work in the seventh.
19:43He gets Jung-Hoo Lee, Elliott Ramos, and Casey Schmidt for San Francisco
19:48trying to get something started here late tonight.
19:51Took Freed a little bit to settle into this game.
19:53You know, the four-pitch walk to start the game.
19:55It was a little erratic to start, but, you know, the guys putting up runs early in the game
19:59allowed him to settle in and start, you know, pounding his strike zone,
20:03and here we are in the seventh inning.
20:04Yeah, it's been impressive, and the Giants has Barry Bonds, Mitch,
20:08and they had their chance, like you said, in the first, to walk a single
20:10and gets the Williams down the strikeout.
20:12It's been all Max Freed since then, and the Yankees' offense as well.
20:21Jake Burns up in the bullpen for New York.
20:27But welcome back baseball, everybody.
20:29Now that we've had a seventh inning stretch and it takes me out to the ball game,
20:32does it feel real?
20:33Yeah, we're back.
20:34We're back.
20:36I know for a sold-out crowd, it doesn't feel like the season has started yet.
20:39Giants fans wait for something to get loud about it.
20:42And they're going to have to wait a little bit longer because Lauren Max Freed has been ornery tonight.
20:47I like that word, and I was just thinking about how he spent his early years in Atlanta, right,
20:53with influences of Glavin and Maddox and Smoltz, and now he's in New York, being a sponge to Andy Pettit
20:58and you, CeCe.
20:58I don't think there's been a free agent other than Garrett Cole, maybe in 2020, who came to the Yankees,
21:04who was immediately as effective as Max Freed has been since CeCe.
21:08Boy, Lauren, you make a really good point, and the very effective right here on Netflix.
21:15Jake Bird, the first in from the Yankee bullpen tonight.
21:18He inherits a clean base path and a 7-0 lead with one out in the 7th.
21:23Here's a look at the numbers last year for Jake Bird.
21:26Four and two with a 5-5-3.
21:28It's a five-pitch mix.
21:30Pitches off his sweeper a little bit backwards.
21:34Eight!
21:36Sweeper, sinker, curveball, cutter, and four-sever.
21:39He features.
21:40How about Max Freed tonight, guys?
21:42Two hits into the 7th inning.
21:46In fact, he puts himself into very elite Yankee company with that opening day line.
21:51It's one and two to Ramos.
21:54Only David Cohn, Ron Guidry, and Mel Stottlemyre had opening day starts of six-plus innings
22:02with two or fewer hits and no runs allowed.
22:06And you see, that's why I say it's different when you're a Yankee
22:08because when you do something cool as a Yankee, like, it's some cool names you get to pass
22:13and, like, get to, you know, sit next to.
22:15So it's awesome to see him be able to do that.
22:18But, you know, Max is just coming to New York and been himself, been accountable.
22:23I think that's the biggest word that Booney has said, you know, when we talk to him.
22:27It's just him being accountable.
22:29And that makes a huge difference in the clubhouse.
22:32And, you know, everybody can watch the way you work, the way you go about doing your business,
22:35and, you know, having a chance to go out and win 19 games last year.
22:39It's just been awesome.
22:41Jake Burt picking up right where he left off with a strikeout of Ramos for out number two.
22:46You know, and I mentioned this earlier.
22:48You said accountability, no excuses, low maintenance for Booney.
22:52But that's infectious in the clubhouse when he loves pitching.
22:55And he mentioned that he's smart.
22:56He's relaxed.
22:58You know, he's a California kid that has kind of a more relaxed vibe.
23:02But when you love to pitch and you're studying and you're smart, you just help everyone around you.
23:06And what a tone he set.
23:07And he's standing right next to Will Warren right there.
23:09And, you know, that's rubbing off on him.
23:11And, you know, it's just great when you have that type of accountability from your superstar.
23:15Like you said, low maintenance.
23:17And that just revs off on everybody.
23:20So, it's who God.
23:21Here's Casey Schmidt hit by a pitch and hit into a fielder's choice tonight.
23:24Oh, and one from Byrd.
23:28On the ground pass, Byrd for Jacks.
23:31And two pitches combined on a 1, 2, 3, bottom of the 7.
23:35It's still 7-0, Yankees.
23:37I was so hailed timing before.
23:39Come and eat some W's with me.
23:42Come and eat some food.
23:43You can see.
23:44Right in the net.
23:49Watch out.
23:50Get out of my dirt, man.
23:57Yeah, we've had some fun watching Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Pro Bowler Jameis Winston have fun here at Oracle
24:06Park as we welcome you back on opening day.
24:09Ryan McMahon leads things off in the Yankee half of the 8th.
24:12Jameis, it looks like you've been having the most fun of any of us tonight.
24:16Absolutely, man.
24:17You know, I am a fun person.
24:20And I know gratitude is the key to abundance.
24:23And I'm just grateful to be sitting here between Jay and Jacob and get a chance to watch a good
24:27old baseball game.
24:28If I'm going to be sitting down, man, I've been on the run.
24:31I mean, Jameis, that is how you do it.
24:32That's how you enjoy a baseball game, my man.
24:35But I need one more thing from you.
24:38We saw the base hit off of Max Freed.
24:40Can you get into the Giants' dugout?
24:41Can you give me a little pup speech?
24:43What do they got to do?
24:43What's the approach when you were facing Max Freed in college?
24:46Well, my approach to Max Freed, we was at Pitco Park.
24:49You know, they had a little short portion of their field.
24:51So my desire was to hit the ball over there.
24:56You had a fun to work out.
24:57It got to a 3-2 count.
24:58So I said, hey, man, I'm going to get in the base.
25:00So I just stayed inside the ball, and I kept my bat in the zone as long as possible.
25:04And I hit it right over second baseman's head for a single.
25:08But, man, one thing, I got a question for you.
25:11Let's go.
25:11Netflix said they were going to take me out to a ball game.
25:14But typically, don't they come with peanuts and Cracker Jacks?
25:16And I ain't had no peanuts on the Cracker Jacks.
25:17I ain't had no peanuts on the Cracker Jacks.
25:18I ain't had no peanuts on the Cracker Jacks.
25:19I'm in this stadium.
25:20Get this man to the peanuts and Cracker Jacks, because that's real.
25:22You got any peanuts on the Cracker Jacks?
25:24There's got to be something at the ball.
25:26There's definitely peanuts and Cracker Jacks.
25:27James, if you have, like,
25:29a wrestling move,
25:31what would you pull off on the two men beside you?
25:33Do you got, what would you give them some people's elbow?
25:35What's the Jameis Winston, the W-Eating machine?
25:37Would you munch on something?
25:38Like, what's the attack?
25:40You know, look,
25:41today I got a chance to be a ball boy.
25:44You know, and
25:45and Jimmy told me,
25:49but Jimmy had told me,
25:50he said,
25:51he said, you know,
25:51we call it ball dude, right?
25:53And one of my favorite things
25:55for WWE superstars is,
25:57you know,
25:58they got mad at me
25:59because they all threw the ball over the neck.
26:01And they were, like,
26:02booing me because I didn't pick a kid to give it to.
26:04So,
26:04I'm getting to the joke.
26:06But,
26:06well, you know what I told them?
26:07I said,
26:07it doesn't matter what you think.
26:09So,
26:09I gave them the stink eye,
26:10and I did what The Rock did.
26:11And I just let them know,
26:13like,
26:13you can't play no games with me.
26:24You got some real bodyguards down there right now, too.
26:27Let me tell you something about these men.
26:28Like,
26:28these men know how to put on the show.
26:30Listen,
26:32one thing people don't know about WWE is they,
26:34they're really writing the script as they go.
26:37Like,
26:37so these are prime entertainers.
26:39Jay, man,
26:40tell me,
26:40tell me,
26:40if you could write the script right now,
26:42what would you do?
26:42What would you tell the Yankees?
26:44What would you tell the Giants to do?
26:45Put them to get some rounds on the board, bro.
26:48Man,
26:48man,
26:48come on.
26:49Giants,
26:50we just got to rally right quick,
26:51Goose.
26:51That's all.
26:52I'm here.
26:52I'm for the support.
26:53You know what I'm saying?
26:54As far as the Yankees go,
26:55we got two words for you.
26:58You all got there.
26:59Thank you so much for your time,
27:01man.
27:01Appreciate this.
27:03I'm here.
27:03Hometown hero.
27:04Thank y'all.
27:05Thanks.
27:10It's been all Yankees on this MLB opening night.
27:13Right here in San Francisco on Netflix,
27:16a 7-0 lead for New York.
27:18Brent Hendrick is the new pitcher for the Yanks.
27:21And Patrick Bailey has lined out on the first pitch,
27:24one away.
27:43That floating Giants hot tub is about as lonely as the hits column on the scoreboard tonight.
27:50Just two hits for San Francisco.
27:53I am 80s.
27:55They are winning,
27:56baby.
27:57I got to get out there to McCovey.
27:58It's so fun.
27:59I got to get out there.
28:00You're in the water,
28:00you're winning.
28:01You know what I'm saying?
28:02It's got to be a day game,
28:03though.
28:03It's a little chilly right now.
28:04It's got a little cold.
28:04Or bring yourself a lot of clothes.
28:08Harrison Bader,
28:09the batter with one gun.
28:11Again,
28:11just two hits for San Francisco tonight.
28:15And for Brent Hendrick,
28:16it's got elite extension.
28:18He gets way down the mound.
28:20Big,
28:20tall,
28:20lanky,
28:21four-seamer slider,
28:22split finger.
28:22The 94 plays up.
28:28Right now for the Giants hitters.
28:29Are they just,
28:30you just try to leave here with something.
28:31Get a knock.
28:32Do something.
28:33Like,
28:33you've got to,
28:33it matters.
28:34You don't want to go down 7-0.
28:36You want to put some momentum,
28:37get some energy,
28:38because you got an off day after opening day,
28:40which is one of the toughest things.
28:41Yeah.
28:42That first couple of weeks.
28:42You want to get going.
28:43But,
28:44for the Giants,
28:45these innings really matter.
28:46Make something happen.
28:47Get something to feel good about.
28:50Well,
28:50I'll tell you one thing the Giants would love to get rid of,
28:52because if it continues and ends this way,
28:55the last time the Giants were two-hit
28:57and shut out on opening day
29:00was 100 years ago.
29:02The 1926 Giants of New York,
29:06of course,
29:07they were shut out by the Brooklyn Dodgers.
29:12And when you're talking about it's been 100 years
29:14since this or that,
29:18Luis arrives into right
29:20with hit number three
29:21for San Francisco tonight.
29:24Now,
29:24I have a pretty,
29:26it was a home opener,
29:27but opening day against the Dodgers,
29:30Kershaw threw a shutout
29:30and hit a home run
29:32to beat us one.
29:33That was painful.
29:35Now,
29:36we got to talk about the hit streak.
29:37That streak is alive,
29:39Matt,
29:39and this is harder to go.
29:40It is.
29:41Months without a bat,
29:43and then come in
29:44and continue the streak.
29:45I agree.
29:46Congratulations,
29:47Grisco.
29:47It's definitely hard
29:48to keep it going through the offseason.
29:50It may be harder.
29:52I think it's trash
29:53if you count that as a hit streak.
29:55No way.
29:55If he gets to 56
29:56over multiple seasons,
29:58it's got to be with an asterisk.
30:00It's got to be with an asterisk.
30:02He had to rest in the,
30:04to imagine,
30:0556 straight.
30:06If you've ever played baseball,
30:08it's about rhythm and momentum,
30:09and when you get into a streak,
30:10it's because you're in a role.
30:12To stay on a role
30:13from the end of a season
30:15and go into the next season
30:16is extraordinarily difficult.
30:17So,
30:18it actually needs a,
30:19not an asterisk,
30:20it needs a superstar.
30:23Exclamation point.
30:24It's more impressive.
30:25It's way more impressive.
30:26To keep that going.
30:27You guys have played a lot of games
30:29in the major leagues
30:30that CC could hit,
30:31by the way.
30:31I used to respect you guys.
30:32Come on now, man.
30:34I lost it all.
30:36Hit streak.
30:37Two balls and a strike
30:38on Matt Chapman
30:39with the rise aboard.
30:41Let's talk a little bit
30:43about Luis Arise, though,
30:44because, look,
30:44this is a guy who
30:46wasn't finding a lot of offers
30:48in the offseason.
30:49He's still on the right side of 30.
30:52He's won three batting titles,
30:54back-to-back years
30:55of leading the National League
30:57in hits,
30:58and somehow,
30:59he is criminally underrated.
31:01Yeah,
31:02it's incredibly frustrating
31:03to watch every offseason
31:04he goes into free agency
31:06and just not get any,
31:07not get any play
31:09or not get any calls
31:11like how we think he should.
31:12You know,
31:12I think at a time when,
31:14you know,
31:14the league is not hitting
31:15for a high average
31:16and him being able to
31:17win batting titles,
31:18put the ball in play,
31:19you know,
31:19barrel up the ball
31:20is a super skill
31:22that I think he should be paid for.
31:23He's an incredible ball player.
31:25He has intangibles.
31:26This guy has more energy
31:27than almost anyone
31:28you'll ever see.
31:29He's really excited.
31:30You can see the passion.
31:31A hero of the WBC.
31:33This was a three-hole hitter
31:33for Venezuela
31:34who won the WBC,
31:36the captain.
31:37And you can tell
31:38the respect that he has
31:38among his peers,
31:39among people who have played
31:40the game a long time.
31:41You know,
31:42Pujols was talking about it
31:43with us at breakfast,
31:44and they can't believe
31:45in how good a pickup.
31:46The Giants are
31:47extraordinarily happy
31:48to have him
31:49because his bat plays
31:50so beautifully
31:51in this ballpark.
31:52And, I mean,
31:52all four of his at-bats.
31:53You can see him grinding
31:54and just,
31:55he's put up the best
31:56at-bats of the game
31:56for the Giants.
31:57And just a great teammate, too.
31:58Always in a good mood.
32:00Always.
32:00I mean,
32:00having him and Willie
32:01in the same clubhouse,
32:02it's got to be a lot of fun.
32:03There's going to be
32:04so much energy,
32:05and those guys
32:06are going to get after
32:07it day in and day out.
32:07It is impressive.
32:09You also feel like
32:10with another contact guy
32:11in the lineup,
32:12it'll give a first-year
32:13manager maybe a chance
32:14to hit and run a little bit
32:15and be a little bit
32:16more creative.
32:17The Giants have stacked up
32:19multiple base runners
32:21for the first time
32:22since the first inning
32:23tonight.
32:24It's a great point, though, Matt.
32:26And here's Rafi Devers now.
32:29First and second
32:30with two gone.
32:37Devers not afraid
32:38to have semantics
32:39in the batter's box.
32:40He's entertaining as well
32:42day in and day out.
32:43No, you're not.
32:44I think he was a little upset.
32:45He missed that fastball,
32:46but you were right.
32:46The fact of 94 to 93 plays up.
32:49He got on him a little better.
32:50Got on him a little quicker
32:51than he thought.
32:53Ball and two strikes.
32:56And I like that adjustment.
32:57He sees him upset.
32:58He was late on the fastball.
33:00Devers tried to speed up
33:01a little bit.
33:02Slows him down.
33:02Where do you go from here,
33:03CeCe?
33:04I'm going back to the slider.
33:05I'm going back to the slider
33:06two more times.
33:07Oh, I like it.
33:11Went back to the slider
33:13and got a fly ball
33:13for Trent Grisham
33:15to keep the Giants
33:17scoreless
33:18through eight
33:20to the ninth.
33:22Restrictions apply.

33:29Download the MLB app,

33:35Another pitching change
33:36for San Francisco.
33:38Right-hander Caleb Killian
33:39making his Giants debut.
33:41A long road back
33:43to San Francisco.
33:44Aaron Judge
33:45picking at the first pitch.
33:47Very much wanting to
33:50avoid a deep count
33:52and a potential
33:52five-strikeout game.
33:56Well, it's been a rough day
33:57for Aaron.
33:58Four strikeouts tonight.
33:59Yeah, just take a look
34:01here at the pitches.
34:02Two on the changeup
34:03from Webb.
34:03A sinker
34:04and a four-seamer
34:06looking.
34:07The low one
34:08from Keaton Wynn
34:08after a couple of splits
34:10and this time
34:10attacks the first pitch.
34:12Tough night for Judge
34:13at the plate.
34:14But you've got to know
34:14he's swinging first pitch
34:15right there.
34:16I'm going to miss the play
34:17as quick as I can.
34:19First pitch to Cody.
34:20Ballinger misses inside.
34:22And, Matty,
34:22as you were saying,
34:23the long road back
34:23he was traded
34:24for Chris Bryant
34:25and goes over to the Cubs.
34:27He was definitely
34:28highly touted
34:29in the Giants organization.
34:30Some injuries
34:31over with the Cubs.
34:32This is his first time
34:33back in the big leagues
34:34since 2024.
34:35And really
34:36just a dynamic
34:37spring training.
34:38The velo is up.
34:39He's feeling healthy
34:39and pretty impressive
34:41to keep battling
34:42and make his way
34:43back to the black and orange.
34:46So it was some
34:47pretty significant
34:47health setbacks.
34:49A guy who's changed
34:49his diet
34:50and his workout routine.
34:52And he's that guy
34:53that has that problem
34:54we'd all love to have
34:57wants to add weight.
34:59Never had that problem.
35:00Most of us
35:01were moving in the direction.
35:03Come on, CeCe.
35:05I did.
35:07Did you lose weight
35:08during the season, Hunter?
35:09Yes.
35:09It was hard for me
35:10to put it on
35:11until, like,
35:11later in my career
35:12where I was finally, like,
35:14you know,
35:14once I always fluctuated
35:16with it.
35:16When I got to 230,
35:17I always wanted to get there.
35:18I was like,
35:18I can't barely move.
35:19So I had to take it off again.
35:21But it was part of my journey.
35:23Three balls and no strikes
35:25the counts of Bellinger.
35:31Where did you want to be
35:32when you were playing?
35:32Did you have a specific spot
35:33that felt right for you?
35:35Anytime I was
35:36in between
35:37305 and 320,
35:39I was at my best.
35:40Which is,
35:41I consider myself
35:42like an offensive lineman.
35:43I mean,
35:44Mass is gas.
35:45Mass equals gas.
35:46Into that power.
35:47Effortless power.
35:50Two gun in the air
35:51in the ninth,
35:52I beg your pardon.
36:10So two quick outs
36:12for Caleb Kelly
36:13and he goes to work on
36:14Ben Rice with the bases empty.
36:17Giants are running out of
36:19canvas tonight on opening day.
36:21Trailing seven nothing here
36:23in the ninth.
36:26Max Freed was great
36:27starting for New York tonight.
36:30Six and a third of shutout
36:31baseball struck out four.
36:34Logan Webb,
36:35six earned runs
36:36of the seven allowed
36:37in his five innings tonight.
36:41You know,
36:41and if you're going to take
36:42a silver lining
36:43as the Giants said,
36:44you come into this season,
36:46the bullpen is the biggest
36:47question mark.
36:48And you fall behind,
36:50Logan doesn't have a start.
36:51You know you can count on him.
36:52He's going to bounce back.
36:53But you get in,
36:54you know,
36:54Brubaker comes out,
36:55has a good one.
36:56Keaton Wynn gets to get
36:57into the season
36:58and really pitched well,
36:59struck out Aaron Judge.
37:00And now you're seeing
37:00Killian come out
37:02and you can see the velo
37:04and get some confidence
37:05in kind of a low-pressure situation.
37:07But the bullpen kind of
37:08sending a message here
37:09in day one
37:10is something that you can
37:11be positive about
37:12from the Giants' perspective.
37:13And would you say
37:14that's the biggest question
37:15you think for this team
37:16coming in to 26?
37:17Yeah,
37:17with a couple of the injuries,
37:18Randy Rodriguez and Pegaro,
37:20two guys they really relied on.
37:22And some of these guys
37:23stepping up that had
37:24good springs coming in.
37:25I know it's just one game,
37:26but some of these guys
37:27that if they can show up
37:28are going to really
37:29set this team apart
37:30and make them work.
37:32Well, an impressive night
37:33from one of their bullpen pieces.
37:35Last chance for San Francisco
37:37trailing specific commissioner
37:39of baseball
37:39and may not be reproduced
37:41a story transmitted in a form.
37:43The accounts and descriptions
37:44of this game may not be
37:45disseminated without
37:46expressed written consent.
37:51Back at Oracle Park
37:53where the Yankees are
37:55three outs away
37:56from sealing up an opening
37:58day win on the road.
38:00And they'll turn to somebody
38:01very familiar to the Giants
38:03and their fans.
38:04Former Giant right-hander
38:06Camilo Duvall takes over
38:07here in the ninth.
38:11Very familiar to the Giants.
38:12Pitched really well for them.
38:15Traded over late last year
38:17to seal up this Yankees bullpen.
38:19Throws it up to 101.
38:21Slider cutter sinker.
38:23He's a huge piece of this
38:25Yankees bullpen.
38:26He's going to be
38:26if he has a good year.
38:29A little case of the yips
38:31there is Jose Caballero
38:33planks one.
38:34And it's an error
38:35on the shortstop
38:36that puts the leadoff
38:38in a report for the Giants
38:39and their half of the ninth.
38:41Hey, base runners
38:41any way you can
38:42and hustling right here
38:44and that's just a tough
38:45hop right there
38:46for Caballero.
38:47Take a look right here.
38:48Gloves down, bounces up.
38:51Doesn't happen too often.
38:52Big league fields are pretty nice
38:53but that was a
38:54that was a tough hop.
38:55That was a tough hop on.
39:01So that'll bring up
39:02Jung Woo Lee
39:03who is 0 for 3
39:04on opening night.
39:08Yeah, Camilo Duvall
39:10was an all-star
39:10with the Giants in 2023.
39:13Led the National League
39:14with 39 saves.
39:16Traded to the Yankees
39:18midseason last year.
39:19Gotten into 22 games
39:21with the Yanks.
39:23And did not have
39:24the same kind of success.
39:25His ERA in that stretch
39:26as a Yankee
39:27was near five.
39:30But this is a power arm.
39:32Make no mistake.
39:33And with David Bednar
39:34as the closer
39:34a pretty good
39:36back of the bullpen
39:37combination
39:38for the Yankees.
39:43One and one.
39:47Where do you guys
39:48have the Yankees?
39:49Here we are
39:50in the early stages
39:51of the season.
39:52The very earliest
39:52in terms of the AL East.
39:54Because there have been
39:55a lot of improvements
39:55in that division
39:56top to bottom.
39:57Yeah, there's been
39:58a lot of improvements
39:58like you said
39:59top to bottom.
39:59You got Pete Alonzo
40:01going to Baltimore.
40:03You got Boston improving.
40:06You know,
40:06with the pitching
40:07that they added.
40:08Sonny Gray
40:08and Ranger Suarez.
40:09But, you know,
40:10I just think the Yankees
40:11with, you know,
40:12the pitching
40:12that they're going
40:13to get back.
40:14You know,
40:15and Gary Cole,
40:16Carlos Rendon,
40:16Clark Schmidt.
40:17I think they have
40:19a chance to really
40:20run away with this
40:21division.
40:21I mean, obviously,
40:22Toronto won it last year.
40:23They're going to be back.
40:25But I think, you know,
40:26the Yankees can stay healthy.
40:28Obviously, you see
40:28the lineup can, you know,
40:30do some damage.
40:31Make you throw
40:33a lot of pitches.
40:35And if they can
40:36continue to do that,
40:37I think they'll be fine.
40:38You know, CC,
40:39and I'll tell you this,
40:40the AL East is going
40:41to be so fun to watch
40:42because don't even
40:43sleep on the Rays.
40:44they've got some
40:45young talent
40:45and some arms
40:46coming back as well.
40:48The lines to center.
40:51One guy to the ninth.
40:56Olympic medalist
40:57Ronda Rousey
40:58and combat sports
40:59trailblazer
41:00Gina Carano
41:00face off
41:01in Netflix's
41:02first ever
41:03live MMA broadcast
41:04tuned in May 16th
41:05for the highly
41:06anticipated fight
41:07that has been
41:08years in the making.
41:15two long-time favorites.
41:19One out, one on
41:20here in the last
41:20of the ninth
41:21for Elliott Ramos.
41:23So if the Yankees
41:25occupy,
41:26let's say,
41:27a favorites position
41:28in the AL East
41:29among the favorites,
41:32where do you have
41:33the Giants
41:33in the mad race
41:35to try to run down
41:36the Dodgers
41:36in the NL West?
41:37Yeah, I mean,
41:38you've got to tip your cap
41:39to Dodgers
41:40back-to-back
41:41World Series championships.
41:42They added
41:44Edwin Diaz
41:44to the closer role,
41:46which is pretty impressive.
41:47You added a Kyle Tucker
41:48as well.
41:49It's an incredible
41:51organization,
41:51and they execute,
41:52and they do the fundamentals
41:53right on top
41:54of being superstars.
41:55So the Giants,
41:56and I mean,
41:56the Padres are incredible.
41:58People sleep on
41:59what the Diamondbacks
42:00were doing,
42:01but it's similar
42:01to kind of the AL East
42:02and the NL.
42:03The NL West
42:04is just a bunch
42:04of powerhouses.
42:05We have a deep lineup.
42:06I think they're up there.
42:07They can compete for it
42:08if they play good baseball.
42:09That one gets away from Wells.
42:11Wild pitch
42:12that will advance.
42:13Adam is to second
42:14with one way.
42:15Yeah, I mean,
42:15you look around
42:16the Diamond at the Giants.
42:17I mean,
42:17they've got a lot of veterans
42:18on the team,
42:18and if they play well,
42:19catch the ball,
42:21play good defense,
42:22and stay healthy,
42:23they definitely have a chance.
42:24But the Dodgers
42:25and the Padres
42:26being at the top,
42:27and like you said,
42:27the Diamondbacks
42:30improving every year.
42:31It's going to be tough.
42:32Both divisions
42:32are very, very good.
42:33The backbone of any team
42:35is pitching in defense,
42:36and, you know,
42:37you're looking at
42:37Robbie Ray as well.
42:39Logan Webb has to,
42:40you know,
42:40he's going to be,
42:41you're going to expect
42:41him to be Logan Webb.
42:42And then you added,
42:43you know,
42:44Malley,
42:45these are a lot of
42:45if they stay healthy,
42:46but Malley was,
42:47you know,
42:47two, three,
42:48one,
42:48one of the best pitchers
42:49over with the Rangers
42:50with DeBrom and Evaldi,
42:52but that's another huge arm.
42:53So they have to starting
42:54pitching to battle
42:55with anyone
42:56on a day-in-day-out basis.
42:58Three balls
42:59and a strike to Ramos.
43:04On the ground
43:04and a chance
43:05for Caballero
43:06and the Giants
43:07are down to their
43:07last out
43:08on opening day.
43:19And we'll take
43:20another look.
43:20Caballero gets another chance,
43:21goes in there,
43:22one-handed,
43:22kind of kicks up
43:23on the heel of the glove
43:24as well.
43:25Able to scoop it up
43:26and Ben Rice
43:28take that man to dinner,
43:29scooping you another one.
43:30That's a big pick.
43:37Casey Schmidt
43:38with two gone
43:38and a runner at third
43:39and a 7-0 deficit
43:41and on the first pitch
43:42a high drive
43:43for Aaron Judge
43:44that will put a close
43:46to business
43:46on opening night.
43:48A statement win
43:50for the New York Yankees.
43:51A 7-0 shutout
43:53on the road
43:54is how they opened
43:55their 20-26 campaign.
43:59And,
44:00CeCe,
44:01I mean,
44:01you've got to tip your cap
44:02to the guys
44:02starting on the mound
44:03for the Yankees.
44:04Just an absolute gem
44:05to set the tone.
44:07I think the Yankees
44:08had a great approach
44:09against Logan Webb.
44:09We talked about it
44:10aggressive early.
44:11They took the changeup
44:12away from him
44:13and they struck quick
44:14and they struck fast.
44:15Yeah,
44:16Max Free
44:16combined with the
44:18approach that the Yankees had.
44:19I mean,
44:19it was just a little too much
44:20for the Giants tonight.
44:21Opening night,
44:22great night for the guys
44:23and off to a good start.
44:25First opening day
44:26shutout win
44:27on the road
44:28for the New York Yankees
44:29since 1967.
44:33And,
44:34the good thing
44:35about baseball
44:35is something
44:36that the Giants
44:37can't really look to.
44:38You know,
44:38you always say
44:39go get them tomorrow.
44:39They're going to have
44:40an extra day
44:41to kind of stew
44:42on this one.
44:43But,
44:44the series will continue
44:45after a little time
44:47to,
44:47I guess,
44:48gather up again tomorrow.
44:50Yeah,
44:51take that day,
44:52get Robbie Ray ready
44:53and come back out
44:54and battle.
44:54These are two good
44:55ball clubs.
44:56Not the greatest game
44:57today that the Yankees
44:58dominate,
44:58but you've got to look
45:00at one other thing.
45:01We didn't see any
45:02home runs tonight.
45:02This is the first time
45:03in, I think,
45:03maybe seven years
45:04that the Yankees
45:05don't hit a home run
45:06on opening night,
45:07but they still score
45:08seven runs.
45:09So,
45:09this offense has more
45:10ways than just
45:10the Powerball
45:11and the Bronx Bombers
45:12to get after you.
45:13That's pretty impressive.
45:14Yeah,
45:14absolutely.
45:15Being able to go out
45:16and execute the game plan
45:17and they,
45:17you know,
45:17wanted to go out
45:18and get something up
45:19early off Logan Webb,
45:20whether it's fastball,
45:22you know,
45:22the changeup,
45:23you know,
45:23they went,
45:23you know,
45:24four for six early
45:24off of it.
45:25And,
45:25you know,
45:26they were just getting
45:26something up early
45:27and putting a good,
45:28good,
45:28good swing on it
45:29and barreling a lot
45:30of,
45:30you know,
45:31really tough pitches.
45:32Harrison Bader
45:32kind of replaying
45:33the details of the night
45:34in two hours
45:35and 22 minutes.
45:36The Giants are shut out.
45:38San Francisco
45:38has now lost
45:39six of their last
45:41eight.
45:41Oh,
