Grassroots aid efforts filling humanitarian gap amid Sudan's conflict
Transcript
00:07Across Sudan, the war has displaced millions of people.
00:11Many have settled in humanitarian camps around the country where they are getting security and aid.
00:17But these are full and several are underfunded.
00:21So in other places, community volunteers are stepping in to fill the gap.
00:26They are working together to organize food, shelter and emergency supplies for those who have lost everything.
00:36We were able to shelter 490 families and are currently sheltering more than 900 children.
00:42We provide three meals a day, biscuits and rice for the children and meals for adults.
00:48The volunteers say they have also distributed essential supplies, including blankets and tampollins, to protect people from the harsh weather.
00:58We have provided approximately 2,000 blankets, heaters and tampollins to protect displaced people from the rain.
01:06For many families living in the shelters, daily life remains uncertain.
01:13We are sitting in the open. It rains in the evening and is sunny during the day. We have suffered
01:19deeply.
01:19I hope the war will stop and that people will return to their homes and that peace, security and stability
01:25will prevail.
01:27Despite losing homes, loved ones and livelihoods, many displaced people say their greatest wish is simply to return home.
01:36Right now we want security, safety and stability, and we want to return to our homes. We don't want anything
01:42else.
01:44Local initiatives alongside humanitarian organizations are providing critical assistance.
01:52From the first day we entered the shelter, neighborhood residents and organizations like We Are All Values, Sudan 0S, UNICEF
02:01and the World Health Organization helped us a lot.
02:06We received assistance from civil society organizations, as well as United Nations organizations and the Ministry of Health.
02:13They helped us and our situation is good now.
02:18Groups like For Cost, Kulma Kim and We Are All Values have been providing meals and shelter for hundreds of
02:25thousands of displaced people since the conflict began in April 2023.
02:30But aid groups warn the crisis is worsening.
02:34The United Nations has cut its humanitarian appeal to $23 billion following major reductions in funding from Western donors.
02:42Meanwhile, the conflict between the Sudanese army and the rapid support forces continues, spreading across the country and deepening one
02:52of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
02:55More than 150,000 people have been killed and over 30 million now need humanitarian assistance.
03:02Children remain among the most vulnerable.
03:05According to UNICEF, more than 1 million children live in areas already experiencing famine and hundreds of thousands face severe
03:13malnutrition.
03:14For now, these grassroots efforts remain a crucial lifeline for displaced families, even as Sudan's war shows little sign of
03:22ending.
