00:08...to Gordon Greenwich.
00:11Today, the top six cricket countries in the world, plus Sri Lanka and Canada, who'd come through from an earlier
00:16qualifying competition,
00:18set out on the trail of the 1979 Prudential World Cup, with a final at Lord's in a fortnight's time.
00:24Now, there were four games played today in the two groups, A and B, and there were two matches which
00:28particularly caught the eye.
00:30The one was at Edgbaston, where West Indies were playing India.
00:32West Indies, of course, always a great attraction with those marvellous stroke players they have,
00:37and the winners of the inaugural World Cup four years ago in 1975.
00:41And the other game at Lord's, where England met the old enemy, Australia.
00:45And that's where we're going to start, with Mike Brearley winning the toss on a pretty gloomy morning,
00:50and deciding that Australia would bat first.
00:53Well, they made a very good start indeed, Rick Darling and Andy Hildreth opening their batting.
00:58Now, we're going to join play. It's in the 13th over. They're still at the crease.
01:01There are 22 runs on the board, and Chris Old is bowling to Rick Darling.
01:10Still Chris Old from this pavilion end.
01:14And again, over-pitched, driven nicely through the offside.
01:17Run will give him chase, and also by Willis.
01:21Not put away with a great deal of power. It was more stroked through the offside by Hilditch.
01:29So, he prints in three useful runs.
01:38That's over-pitched. That's a bit more likely, darling, that we saw play.
01:42So many very good shots in Australia in the winter.
01:44Backed gloriously straight for four.
01:46First boundary of the match.
01:54Oh, he meant that one all right.
01:56I think Willis testing it out.
01:59He hasn't played that hook, the full shot, very convincingly this morning,
02:02but he certainly did there, and commanded away to a mid-wicket for four.
02:11This is a lovely straight drive from Darling, and that will race up towards the pavilion.
02:17No hope at all of anybody cutting it off.
02:20So, a nice way to bring up the 50 for Australia.
02:22If we didn't do that, really, here this morning, they've certainly made the most of it.
02:26Hope we'd stand to 50 between Hilditch and Darling.
02:31And that comes up in the 19th over.
02:38Oh, it's a lovely diving stop there.
02:41And again, Darling getting in a tangle.
02:45In the last 12 months have helped so much for these two, Gower and Randall.
02:50And on either side of the wicket,
02:52they're saving innumerable runs and picking up so many run-out victims.
03:00Welcome to Hilditch.
03:03Not sure, that's how much food we're going to get this time.
03:06And to Hilditch, and that goes through for another four.
03:15Willis to Darling.
03:19Oh, that's in the air.
03:22I'm lucky not to have a hand on my eye.
03:26A fairly simple catch.
03:32And he's giving him out LBW.
03:35Still a surprise there, Darling.
03:36He's set off for the late bye, but no hesitation at all.
03:41And so, Willis breaks his open stand with a score on 56.
03:45Quick, Darling, the first to go.
03:46LBW, bowl Willis for 25.
03:49Look at Fallen in the 21st over.
03:59Good shot, that.
04:03Wasn't all that short.
04:06A little very quick to seize on it.
04:14And there was a big gap there through mid-wicket.
04:17And he found it.
04:20Boycott now coming in to bowl from the pavilion end.
04:22Just before lunch, 11 minutes to go.
04:26On the first morning of this credential match.
04:31Boycott bowled in sweater and cap on Wednesday.
04:38And it looks as though he did the same thing today.
04:43It's not unlike Gary Cozier in method.
04:47Though Cozier does move it away from the right-handed batsman as well.
04:52But both of them slant the ball in most of the time.
04:55In the air and then cut it back off the seam.
04:59Immense.
05:15And he's out.
05:18Boycott's shrunk.
05:19The crowd go glorious.
05:20He's got rid of Hilditch.
05:21A little bit fortunate.
05:23An inside edge arm.
05:24Just with sufficient power to disturb the off-stamp.
05:27And Hilditch goes, bowled by Boycott.
05:30Out for 47 with the second-wicket fall in at 97.
05:39In Swinno again.
05:40Came down the hill just sufficient to beat the bet.
05:43Must say that in favour of Boycott.
05:45Found the inside edge.
05:52That's Hughes away.
05:53Tickled away nicely down to Longleg.
05:55At the end of a Boycott over.
05:59Much greater.
06:01This first figure, I think, at this level in the game.
06:04Three overs now.
06:05One for six.
06:06And they're sprinting down to join a crowd of Boycott supporters and admirers down at the third man.
06:22Both of them in action at the far end.
06:24And that's a lovely shot there.
06:26He's cracked a wire for the back foot.
06:27Wasn't all that short.
06:30Looking in.
06:31Admirable touch.
06:32Stereo's innings.
06:36So the 100 coming up.
06:38For Australia in the 38th over.
06:41For the loss of two wiggins.
06:57Another lovely bit of field in there.
06:59Must have been a close goal.
07:00Gordon and a hurry back there.
07:07Still plenty of batting to come with Yalop, Cosi, Hath, Loughlin.
07:11All very useful and handy strikes of the ball.
07:14Right, Hogg, Dimock and Hurst.
07:16Slight delays out there.
07:18Whilst the England bowlers are not entirely happy with the ball that they've got.
07:22They've complained about it several times.
07:23But they're back with it now.
07:25And it's Boycott to Hughes.
07:27And that's in the air.
07:28Lobbed away.
07:30And it's a great gouge and Boycott struck again.
07:34Hendrik, the man, coming in.
07:36In a fairly unusual position for him on that mid-wicket boundary.
07:39Probably just lost it for a fraction of a second.
07:41Slightly late setting off.
07:42But when he got there, he made absolutely certain.
07:45And Hughes has gone.
07:47Caught Hendrik.
07:48Bowl by Boycott.
07:53Hendrik to Yalop.
07:54Yalop on three.
07:59Oh, went for the big one there.
08:04Oh, really picked that one up.
08:11First, really vicious blow that's been struck at Hendrik in his nine overs.
08:23And again, the challenge is on.
08:24And that's close.
08:25And it's out in fact.
08:28Now, they've tried it once too often.
08:30And Rantle's already hit the wicket two or three times earlier on.
08:34Strikes it again.
08:35Yalop's got to go.
08:36Run out.
08:36And he's out for ten.
08:38Four men are out for 131.
08:46And that's very well bowled.
08:48Border stays.
08:49And isn't all that pleased.
08:51Bob Taylor has gone up for the catch.
08:53I had the feeling that Edmonds took a little bit of time to join him in the appeal.
08:56And it's 132 for five now, with Edmonds claiming Borders' wicket.
09:03Disappointed and even disconsolate.
09:07Alan Border, given out by umpire David Constant.
09:10There it is once again.
09:13It went straight on with the arm.
09:21There's certainly plenty of response there from wicket-keeper, then bowler, and then umpire David Constant.
09:34David Gow.
09:35Oh, he must be run out.
09:36What an appalling piece of running between the wickets.
09:41Cosy was well on his way.
09:43And Lachlan called no.
09:45Seeing it was Gow going away to his right-hand side.
09:50And that really was a bad one.
09:52137 for six now.
09:54Needless, waste of a wicket.
09:56At a time when you had to have someone, plenty of power like Kosier, going for his shots.
10:03His call comes, yes.
10:06And I think there must have been one there.
10:09Cosy was a good two-thirds of the way down the wicket.
10:12Don't think it would be unfair to put part of the blame.
10:15For that latter run out on Treville Oplen, who declined Kosier's call.
10:26Elite stroke for the right.
10:33Three to Bob Willis, who doesn't seem to be moving all that freely.
10:43That's Chris Old.
10:48That's out, Kevin Wright, OBW, to Chris Old.
10:53He was playing right across that, trying to pick it, I should think, from something around about middle stump.
11:00He preps Midland Lake, and hit it away over mid-wicket.
11:03It's the sort of stroke one plays in situations like this, where there's just five overs to go.
11:10Right, OBW, to Chris Old.
11:13And the total now, 150 for seven, right having made six.
11:20And coming over the wicket to the left under Lachlan.
11:26Those obvious tactics now, with one of the tail enders left.
11:30They'll have to move, and he's gone.
11:32No chance at all.
11:36Really, it's been some tremendous fielding by the Englishman here.
11:39It was Ian Botham this time.
11:41Lovely piece of athletic fielding, on the boundary.
11:46So, Dimock, facing Old.
11:50Once again, there's trouble.
11:51Another run out, is it?
11:52Yes, up goes the finger.
11:54Absolute suicidal run-in by these Australians.
11:59A yes, no, yes, no, yes, no call.
12:02And it was Hogg, Stern this time, to depart without scoring.
12:05And nine men are out now, for 153.
12:07Rodney Hogg run out, without opening his account.
12:15And they've gone through it for a single.
12:17And just about scum at home, to take the final total here,
12:21on to 158 for nine, after their 60 overs.
12:38So, 159 didn't seem too great a target for England to get,
12:41and Brearley and Boycott opened the innings, very confidently indeed.
12:45And we had our first sight, on an English test ground,
12:48of the Australian fast bowler, Rodney Hogg.
12:56Excellent delivery to start things off with.
12:59Lovely run-up, smooth action.
13:02Semblance of a bit of a way-swing, and the groping bat of Brearley,
13:07beaten very conclusively outside the off-stop.
13:10Rodney Hogg.
13:13Rodney Hogg.
13:13Oh, that's close.
13:15Yes, yes, yes.
13:16Rodney Hogg has removed Geoffrey Boycott.
13:22Looked pretty plumb.
13:24Four for one.
13:25And boycott his LBW to Rodney Hogg.
13:32Four for one.
13:34And once again, Geoff Boycott LBW, as he was so often,
13:39against the Australians out in Australia.
13:43The ball hurrying on to him there, quite low,
13:46but not much doubt that it was knocking the middle and leg out of the ground.
13:52Four for one.
13:54And once again, Geoff Boycott LBW, as he was so often,
13:59against the Australians out in Australia.
14:03The ball hurrying on to him there, quite low,
14:06but not much doubt that it was knocking the middle and leg out of the ground.
14:15And he's gone.
14:16Randle has gone.
14:17A good out-swing from Alan Hurst.
14:20And this game now is wide open.
14:23Fire for two wickets.
14:25One each to Hogg and Hurst.
14:28And what a great start for Kim Hugh's side.
14:33With Randle gone for one boycott for the same score.
14:47And Wright taking the catch.
14:58Off the mark for Graham Gooch.
15:00Not from the middle of the bat, but it's still two runners.
15:04Lennep fieldsman.
15:17There's a simple land.
15:19Push wide of Hogg at mid on.
15:27Giving it the charge.
15:29One leg by.
15:32Fifty up.
15:342 rickets down, and we're into the 23rd over.
15:47Number 4 is Gooch, and number 2 Brady.
15:51Cody is in his sixth over now, last one before T.
16:11First loose one, Cody is bold. Good cricket there from Brealey to take advantage of it.
16:18Went in the air past Lachlan at Square Lake, and the 4 takes Brealey to 27th. 61 for 2.
16:34Shot.
16:36Two good strikes for Brealey, and threw extra cover, and that one straight down the ground.
16:42Both 3.
16:53Brealey goes to 36.
17:08Lovely three straight there.
17:13Gooch just leant into it.
17:17Kick it off his pads away through mid-wicket.
17:27Nice bit of footwork there by Brealey, using his feet, found the gap there between mid-off and cover point.
17:33And jumping very firmly through there.
17:35And a great chase back by Rick Berling.
17:39Brealey is a tremendous feeler, will chase everything, never gave up.
17:46So, Brealey, three there, moving on to 39.
17:53And it's hit gloriously off the back foot.
17:55That's three for four.
17:59So, the pressure being taken off, the departure of the quicker bowl as Lachlan coming on at medium pace,
18:04and getting the treatment now from this pair of Gooch and Brealey.
18:13It's a particularly good pitch.
18:15A little margin of error for the medium pace, and that just fractionally short,
18:18but allowing Gooch to crack it away off the back foot.
18:28And the shot repeated this time, a little straighter, and it's beaten off again.
18:33So, two glorious shots there from the bad of Graham Gooch.
18:36Brings up the 100 for England, and sets them well on the way to victory here.
18:41And Gooch overlapping Brealey now.
18:44He moves under 40, to Brealey's 39, and the 100 comes up at the end of 36 overs.
18:59That's short, and a great shot there.
19:03Beautiful shot through mid-wicket.
19:05Played by Brealey.
19:08And the crowd rising to England, really pushing ahead now in fine fashion.
19:14So, the applause round the ground also for this 100 partnership.
19:18These two coming together, and Randall was out at five.
19:22And that Longhop put away very decisively there by Brealey for four.
19:28Stand now, 101.
19:31And the nursery end is still Trevor Lachlan.
19:36Gooch and Brealey, both in turn, have quite enjoyed him.
19:48Single to Gooch, he's on 48 now, that makes him the top scorer in the match to date.
19:55It's been about the best part of the day, and more respects than one.
20:00Pleasant evening now, some patches of blue sky around.
20:03Long last, a few shots coming from the bats.
20:06And he's gone.
20:08Found the outside edge.
20:11So, Brealey departs for 44, and three men are out for 113.
20:17So, I've just taken that extra little bit of there off the bowline of medium pace of Lachlan.
20:22He falls after a stand, which has been worth 108 runs to England, and have surely put them in.
20:284-4 points here.
20:35He's got a fairly unhappy start, and could so easily have gone in the first few overs on mediums, but,
20:40er,
20:41he lacked something in technique, he made up for it in courage.
20:44And he's battled his way through to a fine individual effort.
20:55Catch to the wicket-keeper off the outside edge, as seen here once again.
21:01There is the deflection, and Kevin Wright taking it low down, down by the ankles.
21:12Some Lachlan switching to round the wicket for left-handed Gale.
21:245-4 split field again for him.
21:28No close catches, but plenty in run-saving positions.
21:36Confident start, firmly in the middle of the bat, the first ball received by Gower.
21:41Tucked away for a second ball.
21:43There's this happy knack of coming in on the big occasion, and finding the middle of the bat straight away.
21:54It goes here to Gooch.
21:58That should be it.
21:59That's a single for his 50.
22:03Gooch carrying on this wonderful spell he's been in ever since play has been possible here in the middle of
22:08May.
22:10Scoring runs consistently regularly for us, and now has turned it on here in this first credential international.
22:17That's a fine 50 from Brown Booch.
22:21That's a contender for the Man of the Match award.
22:25Decided here today by Freddie Tipness.
22:35Lachlan to Gooch.
22:38And he's given him out, LBW, and Gooch looked a little bit surprised.
22:44Short, looking to try and force it over mid-wicket.
22:48A little bit of extra bounce beating him, but when the finger goes up, you've got to go.
22:54But it's the end of a good innings there from Graham Gooch.
22:57Fine 53 out of an in-wicket total of 124 for four.
23:03So this could even now continue to be a very good contest.
23:08England's brightening hope at the far end.
23:11Faced with this extremely good fast bowler that Australia unearthed with such devastating form during the course of the winter.
23:2341 test wickets in a series.
23:26The best ever by any Australian.
23:27It comes in to Gooch.
23:30And that's where the left-hander answered him.
23:33Overpitched and stroked beautifully through extra cover for four.
23:48Well, what about that?
23:51Dropped it short and put away quite beautifully there through mid-wicket by David Gooch.
24:13And there it is. Dimmick's waiting for it.
24:17And he's had to look a long way for it because Spatham's hit it right into the crowd.
24:22The track was laid.
24:25And it all worked perfectly except both of them hit it another 30 yards past where the Australians expected.
24:40Well, if that's not the shot of the day, it's very close to it.
24:46Beautiful stroke, and it's all covered by Alan Hurst's shrug of the shoulders there.
24:51There was nothing wrong with that delivery.
24:55But there was everything right with the stroke.
25:01Both of them goes to 19.
25:04Gower's on 21.
25:06160 is the target.
25:15That's it.
25:17Victory for England.
25:19A thorough victory and well-deserved.
25:23With both of them going on to 20.
25:27Gower, 22.
25:29160 for four.
25:31And we were in the 48th over.
25:33Thank you very much.
25:37Thank you very much.
