00:07I'm Hilary Heide, a producer at Bioware.
00:10Let's take a look at game progression in Dragon Age The Veilguard.
00:15In this video we'll cover skill progression, item progression, and companion progression.
00:21My goal is to build a rogue assassin who darts around my enemies and strikes them down with poison blades.
00:27In order to craft this build, I'll need to invest in the right skills, find and upgrade gear, and ensure
00:34my companions complement my strategy.
00:37Let's start by looking at skill progression.
00:41As you complete missions, find codex entries, explore the world and kill enemies, you'll level up your class.
00:50Each new level grants more health and unlocks skill points.
01:00Each class has a unique skill tree and can specialize in a specific form of combat.
01:07Specializations unlock at level 20.
01:10Rogues can specialize as saboteurs, bale rangers, or duelists.
01:15I'm going to build toward the duelist specialization, which emphasizes agility and poisoning enemies with necrotic damage.
01:24There are four types of skills.
01:26Traits, passives, abilities, and ultimates.
01:32Traits are activated by button combos.
01:35The riposte trait launches a powerful counterattack after a successful parry or defend.
01:41Passives are skills that are always active.
01:44The Death's Blessing passive gives you plus 10% necrotic damage.
01:50Abilities are actions you trigger during combat.
01:53With the Toxic Dash ability, you dash toward your target to land a deadly blow, dealing necrotic damage.
01:59This also applies the Sundered status, but we'll talk more about statuses when we get to companions.
02:06And finally, ultimates are high-impact, large attacks that take longer to charge up, but create devastating amounts of damage.
02:15Within the duelist specialization, I have access to a unique ultimate ability called a Murder of Crows.
02:21I'll unlock this ability, and then switch over to my character screen to equip my new ultimate.
02:29You can swap out your abilities and ultimates anytime you're not in combat.
02:35You can also enhance your abilities with enchantments.
02:38But we'll get to that in part two.
02:41By leveling up, unlocking new skills, and choosing a specialization,
02:48you can start to design your ideal playstyle.
02:52But this is only the beginning.
02:54In part two, we'll talk about item progression.
02:58Ending now.
03:06Your character, Rook, can equip up to nine items.
03:10Each class has their own main hand, off hand, and alternate weapon.
03:15For example, my rogue has a sword, a rapier, and a bow for ranged attacks.
03:21You also have a helmet, armor, a belt, an amulet, and two rings.
03:28You can acquire items in two ways.
03:31The first is by visiting vendors and faction stores.
03:35The higher you raise your reputation with each faction,
03:38the more items become available for purchase.
03:41The second way to acquire items is simply by finding them in the world.
03:45For example, while exploring the Necropolis halls,
03:48I discover a new main hand weapon, the Enchanted Longblade.
03:53Every item has stats and properties, as well as a rarity,
03:56ranging from uncommon to rare, to epic, to legendary.
04:01This uncommon item has high physical damage and stagger stats,
04:05along with a property that deals plus 20% final attack damage,
04:10making the final blow and attack chains more powerful,
04:13perfect for my melee-focused assassin build.
04:19But what if I want to make it even better?
04:22At the heart of item progression is the Caretaker's Workshop.
04:26The Caretaker is a mysterious entity that has set up shop in your home base,
04:31the Lighthouse.
04:39Here you can upgrade item stats and enchant your items.
04:44The Workshop has its own rank, 0 to 10.
04:47You can increase this rank by finding Caretaker mementos out in the world,
04:52or buying them at shops.
04:55The higher the rank, the better your upgrades.
04:59When you upgrade an item, you'll spend the required resources,
05:03and that item will get a stat increase.
05:05At the same time, its level will increase by 1
05:08until it matches your current Caretaker's Workshop rank.
05:11A higher rank unlocks new enchantments.
05:14These can be applied to an item or ability,
05:18imbuing it with a unique property.
05:19For example, I can enchant my main hand weapon
05:23with plus 25% more staggered
05:25to quickly set up enemy takedowns.
05:28I'll also add an enchantment to one of my abilities,
05:31Toxic Dash, to increase its crit damage by 25%.
05:36Your companion's items can be upgraded and enchanted as well.
05:40More on that in Part 3.
05:42But the Workshop rank affects more than just the items you bring to the shop.
05:47Any time you find or buy a new item in the world,
05:50its level will match the current rank.
05:53So if your current rank is 1,
05:55new items you find will be at level 1.
05:59But if your current rank is 5,
06:01new items will be at level 5.
06:03And if you find or purchase a duplicate
06:06of an item you already own,
06:08two things happen.
06:09Prepare yourselves.
06:12First, the level of your existing item
06:14will jump up to match the Caretaker's Workshop rank,
06:17increasing its stats.
06:19The item will also be empowered,
06:22unlocking a property and increasing its rarity.
06:25Buying a duplicate of my offhand weapon,
06:28the Duelist Blade,
06:29bumps up the blade's stats,
06:31unlocks a property that applies necrosis
06:33to enemies I hit with Riposte,
06:35and changes its rarity from uncommon to rare.
06:39So it's a good idea to keep leveling up
06:41your Caretaker's Workshop,
06:42because the higher its rank,
06:44the better your items will be,
06:45whether you're upgrading them at the Workshop
06:47or finding them out in the world.
06:51Another item type you can find or buy are runes.
06:55Each rune provides a passive bonus to your build,
06:58as well as an active bonus you can trigger.
07:00Up to three runes can be slotted into Rook's Lyrium Dagger.
07:04I'll slot in this Scorch Rune,
07:07which allows my otherwise necrotic focus build
07:09to deal out fire damage.
07:12But skills, items, and upgrades
07:14aren't the only elements of creating your build,
07:17because in the Veilguard,
07:18you're not fighting alone.
07:25In part three, we'll talk about companion progression.
07:36Each companion has their own skill tree and unique items.
07:40They can be equipped with a main hand weapon,
07:43an offhand weapon or keepsake,
07:45armor, and a trinket.
07:48Some gear, such as this Corvid Cloak on Lucanus,
07:51can enhance my character's build,
07:53in this case applying bleeding or necrotic damage
07:56whenever I detonate an overwhelmed target.
07:59And at the Caretaker's Workshop,
08:00I can upgrade and enchant companion items,
08:03just like Rook's gear.
08:05Let's upgrade Lucanus' Corvid Cloak to level five,
08:09greatly increasing its bonus ability damage,
08:13and enchant it with plus one maximum stack of necrosis.
08:18Companions also have their own skill trees,
08:21so as they level up,
08:22you can spend points to unlock skills
08:24that complement your own.
08:26Some abilities can serve as primers,
08:28applying status effects to enemies
08:30such as Sundered, Overwhelmed, or Weakened.
08:34Other abilities are detonators,
08:36combining with primers to create powerful detonations
08:39on status-afflicted targets.
08:41You can swap out companion abilities
08:43anytime you're not in combat,
08:45just like Rook.
08:46In some cases,
08:47you'll want to spec companions with abilities
08:49that can fill in for weak spots in your build.
08:52For example,
08:53if I know I'm going to face a Horde of Darkspawn,
08:55which are resistant to my Rook's necrotic damage
08:58but weak against fire,
08:59I'll want to bring along a companion like Davran,
09:02who has powerful fire abilities.
09:04I'll also bring Nev,
09:06who can detonate targets that I've primed.
09:12First, I'll use Davran's Asan Strike ability
09:14to inflict fire damage and knock down his darkspawn.
09:18Next, I'll rush in with Toxic Dash
09:20to prime a target with the Sundered status.
09:23And finally, I'll use Nev's Icebreaker ability
09:26on the Sundered enemy to detonate it.
09:32In other situations,
09:34such as this battle against the Undead,
09:36I want to max out my necrotic damage potential.
09:39I can accomplish that by bringing along Lucanus,
09:42a fellow rogue whose gear and abilities
09:44increase the amount of necrotic damage
09:46I can deal out.
09:47Thank you, Monus.
09:50Our progression systems allow you
09:52to finely tune your skills,
09:54gear,
09:56and companions
09:57to create the perfect build.
10:00Got us at a distance.
10:03We'll be right back.
10:05We'll be right back.
10:06We'll be right back.
10:08We'll be right back.
10:15We'll be right back.
