00:01Oh, very good. They've greeted each other. You're all thinking we picked a good week.
00:08Welcome all, lovely to see you. So welcome back to Chris and John.
00:12Now, Hallie, you were on the show but not on the sofa.
00:14No, only over Zoom. Yes, in the bad old days. Not the same thing.
00:17In the bad old days, yes. And it's a first-time welcome to Rachel in any form.
00:23Hello. Hi. Thank you. It's nice to be here.
00:26This is a nice thing. Chris, you are particularly fond of one of Rachel's films.
00:31My favourite film, this is a big moment for me, is Wedding Crushes.
00:35Really? I have seen that film countless times. I'd say more than a hundred.
00:41Really? It's whether it's the...
00:46If I'm lonely on a press tour, like last night, I'll switch it on.
00:50If I'm hungover on a Sunday, it's a feel-good movie.
00:53Christmas Eve, the kids, it's family, friends, it's...
00:56I know most of the dialogue in every scene and inside out, I love it.
01:01It's a brilliant film. Oh, my God. I have to jump in on this
01:04because I told her backstage I wanted to tell this to her.
01:07I share your love of Rachel McAdams. Good. Don't we all? Yes.
01:12Wait. The Notebook is my...
01:17When I met my new guy, Van, the first time we got together,
01:21I said, we have to watch The Notebook
01:24because if I don't have a love like this,
01:26and if you don't make me feel like her, this is not happening.
01:30Wow. And I was like, and if I'm not saying, it ain't over,
01:34and if I'm not jumping around you, then this is not going to work.
01:38That is a high fictional bar.
01:41It's my go-to. When I want to cry and when I want to feel good
01:45and when I want to feel like I believe in love, like, that's my movie.
01:49Oh, my God. I just did the same thing, too.
01:51I love you in that movie so much. Thank you. Thank you.
01:54And I've been waiting to tell you that. Oh, my God.
01:56And now I get to tell her that.
01:58Well, my Rachel McAdams story.
02:03I love me, girls. Whenever I want to be a bitch, I want you.
02:12Very good. And weirdly, Halle Berry, I'm sure you're going to bond with John
02:20because you have... Yes.
02:22You have Liverpudlian roots. I know.
02:24You're a family for Liverpool. Yes, I just told him that backstage.
02:27I thought that was not the conversation we were going to be having.
02:31Can you believe that? I know.
02:33We could in some way be related.
02:35I said to her, it's good because at least somebody on the couch
02:37can understand me tonight.
02:39So who was it? You was your mum? My mum's side of the family.
02:42So did she sound like John Bishop? No.
02:46Her family left a little too early, but that is the origin of my roots.
02:50OK. Have you been to Liverpool? No.
02:53It's not really working, this.
02:56When she said that to me, he said, my mum's from Liverpool.
02:59I said, oh, my God, we'll find a connection.
03:01I said, what part of Liverpool? She went, I don't know.
03:05That's where we're from. Yeah, but that's a lovely thing.
03:07And we're proud of that. Yeah.
03:09And we're proud to have you. Yes.
03:13We've got lots to talk about tonight.
03:14But let's start with Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry,
03:17who bring us Crime 101.
03:19It is in cinemas from the 13th of February.
03:21And to get us in the mood, check this out.
03:26Take a deep breath in.
03:32And exhale.
03:38What do you see?
03:41What do you feel?
03:44Feel this moment?
03:48I wouldn't die for insurance company.
03:50Get in.
03:50There's water in the trunk.
03:52Could have been a jeep.
03:54He hits jewels, cash, and high-value items.
03:57He knows exactly what to transport and when.
04:00There's no DNA.
04:02He's in and out in seconds.
04:04Your guy's untraceable.
04:06I need that. I need that.
04:07I came here to make you a business proposition.
04:10I've worked at the same company for 11 years.
04:12You're a VP when you should be a partner.
04:13Those high-value items your company insures might make them disappear.
04:18Start by handing me your phone.
04:20So you're a thief.
04:24Life's too short to drive boring cars, right?
04:26If you see her with me, she's taken.
04:28Oh!
04:33So this is one of those great movies with an ensemble cast,
04:37multiple kind of stories that all come together.
04:39So tell us who you both play and how your stories connect.
04:44Would you like to go first?
04:45I play a high-value jewellery thief.
04:50He's meticulous about how he plans these heists.
04:53He has a very strict code of conduct and how he operates.
04:57And there's a sort of moral ambiguity in the world he exists in.
05:01And he's obviously on the wrong side of the law on one hand,
05:03but he's still a good human at heart.
05:06And Mark Ruffalo's in the film as well.
05:09And the three of our stories are basically on a collision course
05:13into a pretty dramatic, climactic finale.
05:17But it's a throwback to the 70s, 80s, 90s heist films
05:21I think we all love with the contemporary feel.
05:24Yeah.
05:24There's complex characters, there's a deep level of emotion,
05:27but it's entertaining and it's sleek and sexy
05:30and visually pretty stunning.
05:32It is absolutely gorgeous.
05:33You are the thief, Mark Ruffalo the detective.
05:36So Hallie, who are you?
05:37Yeah, I am a high-value insurance agent working,
05:43you know, with these insurance companies that, you know,
05:45appraise high-value assets and, you know, very wealthy people.
05:49And she has worked her whole life.
05:51What Chris and what our characters share in common is
05:54we both grew up with meager means
05:56and we both have worked really hard to get where we are.
06:00And my character, of course, as many women as we age up,
06:04our businesses often age us out and tell us we're too old
06:09and we're no longer value.
06:10And my character decides that she's not going to accept that.
06:15She meets Davis, Chris's character, and she's facing a moral dilemma.
06:22What will she do?
06:23Will she stay on the right side of right or go to the right side of wrong?
06:30And it is interesting because it's a thing that links all those three characters.
06:33Yeah, all of us.
06:33It's sort of like sliding doors.
06:34We all intersect with each other at certain times throughout the movie
06:38and we find out that we have a lot more in common than you would think that we would have.
06:42Yeah.
06:43And it's interesting, you know, you've made so many movies over the years
06:45and I heard you in an interview saying that actually this is one of your happiest working experiences.
06:49Oh, this was amazing. And, you know, when you've done it 30 years,
06:53when you say this has been one of my all-time best, that's really saying something.
06:56These guys, Chris, Mark, Bart, Barry, all of them, I mean, my feet did not hit the ground.
07:03And I say that because you've heard people talk about the stories of all the horror things that have gone
07:07wrong in our industry.
07:09Not the case here.
07:10Like, I have never felt more seen, respected, cared for, stood up for, protected,
07:15than I did on this movie with all these men.
07:18It was, I hope, we're going to do Crime 103.
07:23Mark, Chris and I, we're going to do Crime 103.
07:27And, look, I knew you probably enjoyed making this movie, Chris,
07:30because you like driving and there's a lot of driving.
07:32A lot of driving, yeah.
07:33And you do it.
07:34I do, yeah. I was very lucky in this film.
07:36I mean, I shot Rush maybe 15 years ago, Formula One film, where I did a lot of training then.
07:41I grew up in Australia, lived in the outback and farms and a lot of paddock bombs,
07:46sort of rusted old cars that would demolish and derby into each other
07:49and, you know, mostly illegal sort of activity.
07:53But you kind of get comfortable behind the wheel.
07:56And in this film, I just did like a kid in a candy store.
07:59It's like, I'm going to go top speed, weave in and out of traffic,
08:02handbrake turn, do this, and no one's going to pull me over and give me a speeding ticket.
08:05Wow.
08:06But it has a sort of grit and authenticity to it.
08:08And you can't, you can try and do that on green screen and it doesn't have the same feel, you
08:13know?
08:13Because how do you, were you jealous?
08:15So jealous. I got to do none of that.
08:17I love stunts. I love to get in there.
08:20And I got to do none of that.
08:22Did you get to do some insurance research?
08:26High risk, high value insurance research.
08:28Right.
08:28Oh, yeah. Yeah. Powerpoint presentations.
08:31Yeah.
08:31But actually, but you do love action and stunts and things.
08:34When did you, because it's one thing loving, how do you discover you love it?
08:37What was the movie where you kind of went, oh, I'm really good at this?
08:40Well, I was a gymnast as a kid, so, and I know you were an ice skater, so it was
08:43another thing.
08:44Yes.
08:45I had dreams of being, like, those, those, black, Nadia Comaneci, you know?
08:51Like, that was my dream.
08:52So when I, I, when I did Catwoman, that was the first time I did all of my own stunts.
08:58And I tried to make my Catwoman really like a, like a cat.
09:02And so I was into all the, I learned Capoeira for that movie, and I really got into doing all
09:07of those stunts myself.
09:08And so that's when my love of, and I realized that also, when a performer can do all of their
09:13own stunts,
09:13that frees up the director to put the camera anywhere and shoot from any angle,
09:17because you don't have to sort of accommodate a double, you know?
09:22Yeah.
09:22You can sort of give them a lot more to work with.
09:24And that's when I realized I would try to lean into doing all of my own stunts, I guess.
09:28But you have to, you have to know what you're doing.
09:30I did, er, I did Doctor Who, erm, and...
09:34LAUGHTER
09:35I'm too sorry.
09:36I thought I'd bring this back to the UK, you know what I mean?
09:43I did Doctor Who, and there was a, so Doctor Who's like a scientific, er, series over here,
09:49where there's a, er, a time machine that flies through space,
09:52and the first day, they said, your character is going through space,
09:56and it crashes, so you've got to fall on the floor.
09:58They said, do you want a mat? I said, no, don't worry about it.
10:01So I said, and they just said fall on the floor, and they said,
10:04do you want a stunt double? I said, don't worry about it.
10:06So I literally just threw myself on the floor, BANG!
10:09And I went, OK, let's do it again. I went, what?
10:11Is that a...
10:13Is it going to do that about 15 times, or you're like, fuck off, get him in.
10:17LAUGHTER
10:21And it's interesting, you mentioned Catwoman there,
10:24and Catwoman's one of those films that, you know, it's no secret at the time,
10:28its reception was a little rocky, but since then,
10:30it's taken on a kind of life of its own, hasn't it?
10:32It really has. It's been amazing to see that the younger genera...
10:35Like, they get the joke.
10:37LAUGHTER
10:37And it does have a life of...it's the film that, I think,
10:41out of all of my movies, believe it or not,
10:43people walk up to me and they're like...
10:44RRRR!
10:45LAUGHTER
10:47Carpet! Carpet!
10:49And I'm like, OK, Catwoman?
10:51Or, you know, they say, you're a catwoman!
10:54So people really, yeah.
10:56Do you purr back?
10:57I do. And I just...
10:58RRRR!
11:00That would be awesome!
11:01Hey, that's your experience with Halle Berry, she purred at me.
11:08You've had it now.
11:10Rachel, in terms of, like, stunts and things, you do have an adventurous side,
11:14cos what did you... You did cycling in Australia or something, didn't you?
11:17Yeah, I did. I thought, this sounds like a great idea,
11:20I'll cycle around. Do you know Magnetic Island?
11:22Oh, yeah, yeah, no Magnetic Island. You do? Yeah, I've been there as well.
11:26Yeah, cos you're a bike guy.
11:30Um, yeah, I was, you know, I was travelling, I...
11:34The first time I backpacked by myself, I wanted to go to Australia,
11:37a little Canadian girl, I thought, I'll just go as far as I possibly can.
11:41My parents were like, sure, OK. So I went to Australia and...
11:45How old were you? I was 19.
11:47Wow, see, that's big. You know what I mean? Thank you.
11:51No, it is. That's a big thing to go backpacking by yourself to Australia.
11:55Yeah, big, dumb.
11:57But, uh, it was great, it was great.
11:59But, yes, I wound up, um, with, you know, a random guy from London.
12:05Uh, biking. Biking.
12:09Yeah, that's what we call it in England.
12:14Strictly biking. Um, he had his bike, I had my bike.
12:17We... Bikes.
12:18Stayed to our bikes.
12:19Yes.
12:20Um, yes. And, uh, uh, yeah, and I was dead weight.
12:24He was so fit and, um, and he was trying to be really patient,
12:28but I was hallucinating by the end.
12:30I was praying to God.
12:32There was no civilisation.
12:35There was no people, there were no restaurants.
12:37Chris lives there.
12:46The Australian tourism board are loving this show.
12:50Nothing!
12:51Nothing!
12:53There's one guy on a bike.
12:55Looking for Rachel.
12:57LAUGHTER
12:59Talking about travelling around Australia, you did this such a lovely film,
13:04Chris.
13:04The film where you're motorcycling round Australia with your dad.
13:08Tell us about that journey.
13:10Yeah, so, um, it was initially part of the Limitless series,
13:14and then it became its own thing,
13:18and so we separated and it was an individual episode.
13:20But, um, my dad was, uh, diagnosed with, uh, Alzheimer's a few years ago.
13:26And the, just, the director came to me and said,
13:30look, I know it's a very sensitive subject,
13:31and, um, we have this idea where there's this thing called reminiscence therapy,
13:37where we, basically, the hippocampus, the part of the brain
13:40that Alzheimer's dementia is attacking,
13:42you stimulate via old memories and, and, and reignite neural pathways
13:47and so on, potentially, um, and it's somewhat experimental,
13:50but they're getting, you know, there's a lot of positive results.
13:53Yeah.
13:54And so we had this idea about going back to the family home we lived in
13:58and doing a road trip up to Northern Territory.
14:01Um, we lived in an Aboriginal community four and a half hours
14:04outside of, uh, Catherine in, in Arnhem Land.
14:08And, um, where he was a bullcatcher.
14:10This is 30-something years ago.
14:12So we're going to do this motorbike road trip.
14:14And, and I was very apprehensive about it.
14:16I didn't want to sort of exploit anything he was going through
14:19for the sake of sort of drama and entertainment and so on.
14:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:23But he said, man, a deep integrity and, and, and humility.
14:27And I said to him, look, do you have any interest?
14:29And he said, oh, yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun.
14:31And look, maybe, you know, me sharing my story might help someone else.
14:35And so we, um, embarked on this, this, this road trip.
14:39And we started in, in Melbourne, where we lived.
14:42And a friend of ours bought the house we lived in 30-something, 40,
14:48well, 30, we, when I was born in Melbourne,
14:50lived in the house when I was probably six till 18.
14:54So 20-something years ago, he bought the house.
14:57And he had a series of photographs
14:59that he had taken of the house when he bought it.
15:03And so the art department said to him,
15:05can we have those photos?
15:06And they redressed the entire house.
15:09This is amazing.
15:10According to those photographs.
15:13And then we went to the house and walked in
15:17and it was like stepping back in time.
15:19Oh, my God.
15:19That, I mean, it's just, it gives you chills, doesn't it?
15:23Yeah.
15:23It was remarkable.
15:24And I, it was this overwhelming nostalgia,
15:29this ginormous reminder of the passage of time, emotional,
15:35because of the memories we had there
15:37and now the memories we weren't going to have
15:39or the memories that were potentially disappearing.
15:41And my dad walked in and he's like,
15:44I said, you know, I'm trying to, you know,
15:46there's cameras on us.
15:47What do you think?
15:47And he goes, oh, it's great, it's great.
15:49I said, how do you feel?
15:51He goes, I don't know about all the theatrics, mate.
15:53You know?
15:54All the cameras and stuff.
15:56I said, yeah, we're doing a documentary.
15:58Anyway, and he kept saying, where's your mum?
16:00She'd love this.
16:01And I said, well, she's not in the episode, didn't she?
16:03And she goes, oh, okay.
16:04And then a minute later, he's like, where's your mum?
16:06What's she doing?
16:06And I said, well, Dad, she's not, she's here, but she's not.
16:09It's just us.
16:09And, and he kept asking.
16:12And it was so beautiful.
16:13He wanted to share it with her.
16:14And then eventually they were like, just, just bring her up.
16:16And so she came into the house.
16:18For her, it really hit home because it was a real reminder
16:22of the sort of memories we'd had and what we're missing.
16:25And then he, you saw him relax, you know, that was his sort of anchor.
16:29Yeah.
16:30As things are sort of being taken away and disappearing.
16:33And it was quite beautiful and, and, and profound and heartbreaking.
16:38And, and I've had people say to me who've seen the episode
16:41who are suffering with dementia or Alzheimer's say,
16:44I wish my kids could see this or my family members,
16:47because people dance around the issue.
16:49No one comes and says, what are you afraid of?
16:52How are you feeling?
16:53Because they, they, it's too hard to confront.
16:56So they suffer in silence.
16:57And so I was asking questions that to, to my father and yes,
17:02on camera, but the questions I probably wouldn't have been
17:05brave enough to ask and those things.
17:08And how's he feeling?
17:09And it was, I asked him in the doc, I said, you know,
17:13what are you afraid of?
17:14And he said, I just don't want to be a burden, you know?
17:17And it said, it said so much to me about him.
17:20And not that I could have any more respect for my father,
17:22but the fact that his main concern was not being a burden
17:26to those around him more so than I'm losing my memories
17:30and my time is expiring, this was beautiful.
17:32But the episode became about connection and about love
17:35and family and what's important, which is the shared moments.
17:38And also there's that lovely thing of sharing memories.
17:40Yeah, it's about sharing memories.
17:41And in the, in the midst of all, all of that,
17:43there's a re, there's a very sweet but funny moment where,
17:46er, you and your mum and dad are in that original house
17:49and you are watching, particularly this is the first film
17:53you ever made.
17:54Yeah.
17:54Yeah.
17:55It should have been the first and last film we ever made.
17:57Um, it was good.
17:59We created this ridiculous sort of parody of, er,
18:02Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter.
18:03Er, well, we've got that clip.
18:05It's the clip of the family.
18:07So please enjoy Chris Hemsworth's first ever film performance
18:11in Crocodile Hunter.
18:13Can we see it?
18:14Yeah, you can pop it on.
18:17The Crocodile Hunter.
18:19Do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
18:22You almost felt Crocodile Crocodile.
18:24Crocodile Crocodile.
18:25How are you going, folks?
18:26We've got a real bloody river in store for you today.
18:29Oh, this is, this is gold.
18:31We're going to be chasing the Siberian tiger Australian fox.
18:35It's going to be bloody unreal.
18:38Let's go have a look-see.
18:41Now, I've got myself a little son of a look-see.
18:44That was my hat.
18:45The writing hat.
18:47Here, come here.
18:48Have a look-see.
18:49That's what I'm talking about.
18:50Deadly as.
18:51He's digging a hole.
18:53Remember, when he's not looking,
18:55over here, over here, over here.
18:57I've got him.
18:58That guy wasn't hurt in the making of his film.
19:02You get him in the full Nelson, like so,
19:04and I'm going to get him to submit him.
19:06Look at the dog.
19:07Deadly.
19:09Next week, we'll be chasing the Australian grasshopper.
19:13Can't wait.
19:14See you then.
19:24That was your first film.
19:26Everyone can enjoy your latest film.
19:29Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry in Cry 101
19:32from the 13th of February.
19:34Very good.
19:36They're shorts.
19:38Top pair of shorts.
19:40Oh, my God.
19:41There's something very Australian about that.
19:43Yeah.
19:44Yeah, they were top pair of shorts.
19:45That's what you want.
19:48Next up, Rachel McAdams brings us a brilliant movie
19:51from Evil Dead director Sam Raimi.
19:53It's called Send Help.
19:55It opens in cinemas on the 5th of February.
19:58So, Rachel, you play Linda Little.
20:01She's fantastic.
20:01Tell us about Linda Little.
20:03Who is she?
20:04What's she up to?
20:05Well, Linda is a real worker bee.
20:08She's been at her company for seven years,
20:10and she can do everybody's job with her eyes closed.
20:13And she's in line for a big promotion.
20:16She's very excited.
20:17She's going to use the money to get a bigger apartment
20:19and go travelling.
20:21And then she gets passed over for the douchebag friend
20:27of the boss who's been there for six months.
20:30Oh.
20:31And it really grinds her gears.
20:33It would.
20:35And she's just about had enough, you know?
20:38Yeah.
20:38Yeah.
20:39I'd rather say it's her asshole.
20:42Yes.
20:43Grind her gears is...
20:45It's not pissed off, you know?
20:47It's not enough.
20:47It's not enough.
20:48Sorry.
20:49Once again, eats her asshole.
20:50Eat her asshole.
20:52It really eats her asshole.
20:56Like that?
20:57Yes.
20:57Like that.
20:58Good job.
20:59I'll work on it.
21:01But tell us more, because then a big thing happens.
21:06We're allowed to know the big thing, aren't we?
21:08Oh, the rest?
21:08The send help bit.
21:10Right.
21:13You remember what happens, right?
21:16I don't know how long ago you filmed this, Rachel.
21:19It was like six months ago.
21:21After you lost your asshole.
21:25Yes.
21:26So she gets invited to prove herself once again.
21:30On the company trip to Bangkok, her new boss invites her to solve a problem there and they get on
21:38the plane and the plane goes down.
21:44Is that a spoiler though?
21:46No.
21:46No, it's really not.
21:47It's called send help.
21:48Right.
21:48Don't care.
21:52I think the audience will be disappointed if they don't know that.
21:56They'll be like, why does she need help?
21:58I don't know.
22:00The plane is broken.
22:03Yes.
22:04Yes.
22:05And then she winds up washing up on a Thailand beach.
22:10And she thrives.
22:12And she thrives.
22:13Yeah, she does very well because she's a fan of Survivor.
22:16She's a big fan of Survivor and she spends a lot of her time, her spare time.
22:19She's auditioned for Survivor countless times.
22:21Never been chosen.
22:23Wow.
22:24I know.
22:24It's more asshole eating.
22:30I was going to say, I've never heard this expression before.
22:32I've coined, I've coined, I've made this up.
22:34Oh, yeah.
22:35Everybody in my life.
22:36That's right.
22:37Hayley, Hayley, she's got scouts DNA.
22:40You know what I mean?
22:41I can find it, I can find the spirit, I can get to it.
22:46Eat your asshole.
22:48I can't wait.
22:49There's some people out there going, yeah, great.
22:53You're going to take off.
22:54Let's do it.
22:55It's going to take off.
22:56Listen, our clip is you and your boss, played by Dylan O'Brien.
23:00And it's you coming to terms with your new situation on the island.
23:05You can't put that kind of weight on that yet.
23:07You don't tell me what to do.
23:08How about that?
23:11You know what?
23:13You think you're so smart.
23:15Well, guess who you're talking to?
23:18CEO of a next-gen 500 company, baby.
23:20That's right.
23:22A company your father built.
23:24God rest his soul.
23:28Oh, wow.
23:30Oh, wow.
23:31You know what?
23:31You're so done.
23:33Huh?
23:33Yeah.
23:34You're so fired.
23:35Oh, am I?
23:36Yeah.
23:36Oh, no.
23:40Where are you going?
23:41Where the fuck I want to go?
23:42Making my own camp.
23:44Oh.
23:44It's not so hard to eat some leaves and some sticks.
23:48I've seen you do it and I've...
23:51Well, I wish you luck.
23:53And I'll tell you where to send my last check.
23:56Second coconut tree on the left.
24:02And obviously you weren't stranded on a desert island in real life,
24:06but as Rachel McAdams, you did face a lot of hardship.
24:09I feel there was a lot of fluid in this film for you.
24:13Mm-hm.
24:14Yeah.
24:14I mean, there's obviously water, sea, all of that,
24:16but there's more.
24:18Yes.
24:19Yeah, a lot of blood.
24:20A lot of blood?
24:21Yeah, which I knew.
24:22I knew that when I read it.
24:24I mean, I knew there was some blood.
24:26I didn't know quite how much...
24:28The Sam Raimi level of blood.
24:29There would be.
24:30Sam Raimi level of blood.
24:31There's really no...
24:32Yep.
24:33There you are.
24:34Oh!
24:34That is Sam Raimi.
24:36Like, he's very hands-on with the blood.
24:37Oh, he insists.
24:39Oh!
24:39It has to be him.
24:40No one else could do it.
24:42And he'll sit there for like an hour before we actually shoot it
24:46and practice.
24:48Not actually throwing blood, but like, he's getting ready...
24:51Oh, right.
24:52To do it.
24:53The wrist action.
24:54This is a clip.
24:55Just clip that up.
24:57Clip that up.
24:58Put it on the internet to everyone who watch this show.
25:00He's just getting ready.
25:05I'm just walking into all of it tonight.
25:07Oh, my God.
25:09Um, yes.
25:10But he's...
25:10No, he's a real team player.
25:14We all saw it.
25:15We all saw it.
25:17I mean, this is...
25:24Look, there's all these people around you.
25:26There's a false head of a boar probably being held by a runner somewhere.
25:31He's throwing stuff at you.
25:32And, you know, you've trained for this.
25:35LAUGHTER
25:35I did.
25:37I chose this life.
25:39LAUGHTER
25:39It's not easy.
25:41And here's the thing, Rachel.
25:43You, Jack DeGreer, but as Hallie mentioned earlier, originally, sports.
25:49That was your thing.
25:50I was Sporty Spice, yes.
25:52Yeah, I loved sports.
25:54What did you do?
25:55Ice skating you were very good at.
25:57I was OK.
25:58I was OK.
25:58Is this figure skating?
26:00Yes.
26:01Oh, there you are.
26:02There I am.
26:03With my little medal around my neck.
26:05Yeah, see, that's how good you are.
26:06You won a medal.
26:07You won a medal.
26:08I recently threw away all my medals, all my badges.
26:12No.
26:13Literally three days ago.
26:15Why?
26:15By mistake?
26:17No.
26:18What?
26:20I'm trying to Marie Kondo my life.
26:23You know, I'm like...
26:24My mum was like, well, what if your children...
26:26I was like, what are they going to do with my skating tests?
26:30You know?
26:30No?
26:31At the Rachel McAdams Museum.
26:32What will they put in the Rachel McAdams Museum?
26:35I know.
26:37The exhibits will be empty.
26:39They should have all her skating medals.
26:43No, no, you got a photograph there from 1954.
26:48You're my new best friends.
26:52And did you just put them in the garbage?
26:55Yes, and it did pain me, but I thanked them and let them go.
27:02OK.
27:03Yeah.
27:03I've been studying Buddhism.
27:04Yeah.
27:07In terms of winning things, Halle Berry, wow.
27:10Oh, good.
27:10You know, this is amazing.
27:12This is amazing.
27:13So, I think I knew that you'd been a, you know, a teenage pageant kind of beauty queen,
27:18but I had no idea the amount you won.
27:22I mean, there were serious prizes.
27:24I was insane.
27:25I know.
27:25I got good stuff.
27:26No, you really did.
27:27I was in it for the loot.
27:28Yeah, because how old were you?
27:30You were like, you were 16, 17 when you were dating?
27:32I was 17, yes.
27:33So, it was Miss Teenage?
27:34Yeah, it was Miss Teen.
27:35I didn't really aspire to be a beauty pageant queen.
27:39It was my boyfriend at the time who really wanted a girlfriend who was a beauty queen.
27:44So, he took my high school picture and entered it into the Miss Teen Ohio competition.
27:51And I remember one day, I just got a letter in the mail and says, you are a finalist in
27:55the Miss Teen Ohio.
27:56And I was like, what?
27:57And I had no idea how it happened.
27:59And then he told me the story.
28:00So, I showed up at that contest.
28:02I put on my prom dress and I showed up.
28:04And I really, literally could care less.
28:07I was just there because he wanted me to do this.
28:10And I ended up winning the damn thing.
28:14And I was like, oh, my God.
28:15But what I didn't know is when you win one, then you have to be, I was now Miss Teen
28:19Ohio.
28:19I had to go to Miss Teen America.
28:21Like, I didn't know I had to keep going.
28:23Yeah.
28:23And I went to Miss Teen America and I won there.
28:26Then I had to go to Miss Ohio.
28:27Then I won there.
28:28Then I had to go to Miss USA.
28:29Like, it kept going and going and going until I finally lost.
28:32But along the way, tell us some of the stuff you won.
28:35Oh, my God.
28:36I won a car.
28:38Yeah, a Chrysler LeBaron at the time.
28:40Convertible, wasn't it?
28:41Yes, convertible.
28:42White convertible is amazing.
28:43Wow.
28:43A fur coat, like $10,000.
28:46That was like $10,000.
28:48I had $10,000, like tax-free money.
28:50Mm-hmm.
28:51Um, jewellery, diamonds, clothes, wardrobe.
28:55Yeah.
28:56So, so, so what happened to the pimp, sorry, the boyfriend that put it in?
29:00LAUGHTER
29:02You know what?
29:03He went to jail three times.
29:06LAUGHTER
29:08The third one, that was a breaker.
29:11He went to jail.
29:12Yeah, three times.
29:13Broke up when he ended up in prison three times.
29:15Uh, Rachel, just getting back to send help, uh, you have form playing the anti-hero, uh,
29:21because Regina George in John's favourite film Mean Girls, uh, I mean...
29:26Yes.
29:26LAUGHTER
29:27Is it true that you didn't understand how much people would hate Regina George?
29:33Yeah, yes, I didn't, well, yes.
29:36LAUGHTER
29:37I didn't, I didn't know, I didn't know how it would hit.
29:40I didn't know, like, you know, yes, how hated she would be for how long.
29:46LAUGHTER
29:46But what was that?
29:47So the first time you saw a screening with an audience, was that when it dawned on you?
29:51Yes, yes.
29:52Everyone except for my best friend, who was beside me, so when I got hit by the bus,
29:57everyone cheered, and she went,
29:59No!
30:01LAUGHTER
30:03And she said, and I was, like, yanking her down.
30:05I was, like, right here.
30:06I'm alive, we're good.
30:09And she was crying.
30:11But she was the only one who was upset about me getting killed.
30:14She saw a very different film.
30:16LAUGHTER
30:16Yes.
30:17Well, everyone's going to love Rachel McAdams in Send Help.
30:21You can see it in cinemas from next Thursday.
30:24That's when that's out, yeah.
30:25CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
30:28Now, John Bishop, I love this.
30:32John Bishop is in a Hollywood movie.
30:34Well, his story is, is this thing on?
30:37It's out today.
30:38It's directed by Bradley Cooper, stars Will Arnett and Laura Dern,
30:41and they've been on the show talking about it.
30:44So I suppose the main thing is, how the hell did this happen, John?
30:48And what does it feel like?
30:50I'm massive in Hollywood.
30:52LAUGHTER
30:53No, it's really, really weird, really strange,
30:57because I met Will Arnett eight years ago on a barge in Amsterdam,
31:04which is the start of all good stories.
31:06But I met him through a mutual friend, Chris Trickier,
31:09who's a, you know, who's a film producer.
31:12And he said, tell Will your story about how you got into comedy.
31:16So I told him, Will went, that's a great story.
31:18I'd love to try and write it as a script with my writing partner,
31:21Mark Shappell.
31:22So I said, great, you start writing it.
31:25But I, you know, I want to chip in.
31:27I want to be part of the writing process.
31:29So they would write a script and send it to me.
31:31And then I'd send some notes and I'd write some bits and send it back.
31:34And then they'd send me the new version with none of my bits in.
31:38LAUGHTER
31:39I thought they haven't got the email, I'd send it back.
31:41And then they'd still come back without my bits.
31:44And I went, my bits, shit, boys.
31:46And the truth was, it was too close to me.
31:50You know, the story about how it got into comedy,
31:53the reality of it was too close.
31:55So I had to step away and allow them to write it.
31:58I'm so glad I did.
32:00There was a big portion of trust involved in that.
32:02But the end result is brilliant.
32:05And obviously you spoke to, you know, the writers and everything
32:08and told them the story.
32:10But Melanie, she spoke to, was it Laura Dern who plays her in the movie?
32:15Yes, so Laura Dern got cast and then through mutual friend,
32:19Laura reached out and said to Melanie, can I meet you?
32:22So Melanie went and sat with Laura
32:25and just downloaded her side of the story and what went on.
32:29So Laura's character, honestly, God reflects Melanie so, so much.
32:33And there's one particular scene, which is true.
32:37We got a note, you know, so you sometimes get from kids where they go,
32:41there's headlights in the school, can you check each other?
32:44And we weren't living together, so she had to come to my house
32:47and we had to check each other for headlights, which is such an intimate thing.
33:02So romantic.
33:03That's the clip we've got.
33:04This is Laura and Will with nits.
33:09I think I might have lice.
33:12Are you seeing it jump off me?
33:14Why are you...
33:15Let's get you in the chair.
33:16I think that's what we're going to do.
33:17Yeah, one just crawling in between.
33:19Mom, you're pregnant.
33:20You are so pregnant.
33:22What?
33:22You hooked up with a bug.
33:23All right, guys.
33:24Guys.
33:24But, Dad, that's how you said you get lice.
33:26Oh, is that how you said it?
33:27No.
33:28It was a joke because the video said we were looking for baby eggs, right?
33:31It was a joke.
33:32Did you hook up with a bug?
33:33No.
33:34Well, you've got lice, so...
33:35Yeah, you did.
33:36You hooked up with a bug.
33:37You promised not to tell them.
33:38You hooked up with a bug.
33:40All right, you know what?
33:40You guys need to rehearse.
33:41Let's go.
33:42Okay.
33:42Let's go.
33:43Get busy.
33:43I already know it.
33:44Keep the volume down, too.
33:46Keep the volume up?
33:47No, not up.
33:48Keep the volume down.
33:48I'm serious about the volume.
33:50So, you're really not seeing anything?
33:51There's no little bites?
33:52I don't think so.
33:54To be honest, it's just looking...
33:56Now it's making me itch.
33:57I must have it.
33:58Would you check me?
33:59Sure.
34:01Aw.
34:02One number.
34:05And...
34:07It is, I think, for a British audience watching this,
34:10it'll seem quite far away from your life,
34:12because it's set in America now.
34:14Will Arnett is playing you.
34:15But those big scenes in it are real.
34:20Like, Melanie...
34:21Yeah.
34:21She did accidentally see you doing stand-up.
34:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:25So, the big...
34:26So, for people who don't know, I fell into stand-up
34:29because we split up, me and my wife,
34:31and I was a month away from being 34.
34:34And the only reason I went into stand-up is I was...
34:38One Monday night, I used to have the kids every weekend,
34:42so Monday I used to be on a downer.
34:45And I was walking past a comedy club in Manchester called
34:48The Frog and Bucket, which I'm sure you're very familiar with.
34:50Oh, I know.
34:51Yeah.
34:52I've been there many times.
34:54And I was...
34:55I'd been to two comedy clubs in my whole life.
34:58I had no interest in stand-up comedy at all.
35:01Erm...
35:01And, anyway, they...
35:02They...
35:02I thought, I'll go in...
35:04Because comedy's great, and anyone who's ever on their own,
35:06just go to a comedy club, you're sitting in a room full of strangers,
35:09but everyone laughs at the same time.
35:11So, I thought, I'll go in there and it'll cheer me up.
35:13And, erm...
35:15I used to do this joke, which is not the best joke in the world,
35:18and I've said this story before, but it's the only story that's the truth,
35:21is I used to...
35:23I used to do this joke to let all the ladies in the room know
35:26I was a single man.
35:28I used to say, I'm really sad at the moment, ladies and gentlemen,
35:31cos me and my wife are not together.
35:34Aww.
35:35It's not that sad, honestly.
35:36We're not divorced or anything.
35:38I've just killed her.
35:40But I knew I was going to miss her, so I've kept her head in the fridge.
35:43Terrible!
35:45Terrible!
35:46Terrible!
35:47And I got announced on stage this Thursday,
35:50and I said this joke on stage, and as I said it, I looked to the left,
35:54and the head that was meant to be in the fridge was in the audience.
35:59Oh, no!
36:00And this is a true story.
36:01So, she was in the audience, and what had happened,
36:03we'd been apart for almost two years at this point,
36:06and when you're apart, you live parallel lives,
36:09so you don't really know what's going on in each other's life,
36:11you deal with the logistics of children.
36:13She had a new job.
36:15The people she was working with were going out for a birthday do.
36:18Someone said, let's go to a comedy club.
36:20She didn't know I did stand-up comedy.
36:22The people she was with didn't even know my name.
36:24So, when I get announced on, they don't understand why she goes,
36:28What the?
36:30And then I go on stage in front of a room full of strangers
36:33and tell them I've killed her and kept her head in the fridge.
36:37Oh, no!
36:38So, that twist is in the film where they get back together.
36:42And what happened with us is that...
36:45I remember we were literally going through the final stages of the divorce.
36:49I remember seeing her and thinking, God, that's going to cost me another ten grand.
36:54And then she came over and we started talking.
36:58And it was lovely.
36:59We discovered each other again.
37:01She said, that was a surprise.
37:03I said, look, I'm really sorry about the whole head thing.
37:05She said, no.
37:06She said, the surprise was you were funny.
37:08You made me laugh.
37:10Yeah.
37:11Why weren't you doing that earlier?
37:13I know.
37:13She said, you made me laugh.
37:15She said, you reminded me of the man that I first met.

43:59Well, just one because, I don't know,
44:02the only feature on the record is Coleman Domingo being...
44:05Hello.
44:06Hello.
44:07Yeah.
44:07Who is fabulous.
44:09He's being like the voice of God in the introduction to a song.
44:13And how did you bag Coleman Domingo?
44:15OK, so I have this thing and this is how we're friends.
44:18Yeah.
44:18No, that's a bit inappropriate.
44:20Sorry.
44:20No, it's fine.
44:21It's fine.
44:22You have my approval.
44:24No, just...
44:24This is how I make friends.
44:26So watch out, guys.
44:28I have a podcast that I do with my mum, Lenny.
44:33Yeah.
44:33Who actually tonight is just being a very supportive mum somewhere.
44:36She's somewhere.
44:37Where's Lenny?

44:58You sit there and have dinner.
44:59It's also Jesse at the moment.
45:00Brilliant.
45:01So, Lenny and Jesse, you cook, but do you get to choose
45:04what you eat, John, or is it just whatever they make?
45:06Yeah, well, I'm vegetarian, which was a challenge,
45:09let's be honest.
45:09I think you got, like, you got some delicious nuts, didn't you?
45:12Yeah, yeah.
45:13No, you got more than that.
45:14No, we catered for everyone, and Coleman was on it,
45:16and he was amazing, and we became friends,
45:18and he's just a gorgeous human being.
45:19I love your mum on it, because she's so unimpressed
45:22by the celebrities you have on.
45:23She says, like, she goes,
45:24not another actor, darling.
45:27Not another actor.
45:29And they all love her.
45:31Obviously, you say things like...
45:32You're all welcome, don't worry.
45:34Season 19, season 19, guys, don't worry about it.
45:37And do you get a lot of kind of recognition from it?
45:39Like, do people kind of recognise you as Jessie Ware?
45:41It's funny, this one at Graham.
45:43This happened.
45:44I was at my friend Deb Hines' gig, Blood Orange.
45:48I was there.
45:49It was a very muso crowd.
45:50We were at Ali Pali.
45:51I'm there to support my mate, head nodding.
45:54You know, I think, these are my people.
45:56And this girl comes up to me, she goes,
45:57excuse me, do you do that podcast?
45:59And I was like, yeah.
46:00And she went, are you Lenny Ware?
46:01And I went, oh, God.
46:05No, I'm critically acclaimed, five albums in, lady.
46:08No, I kind of love it.
46:10No, I'm not 17...
46:11I'm not saying age, sorry, Mum.
46:12No, I'm not my mother.
46:15She looks amazing, she's fabulous, but no, it's brilliant.
46:18It's humbling.
