00:00When I say opening day, Pauly took it straight to his career.
00:04He took it straight to the job that we have to do.
00:07Opening day, where's your rank on your slate here, man?
00:10It's a top five sports day for me.
00:12Opening day, Super Bowl.
00:14Super Bowl.
00:15Super Bowl, but...
00:16Opening day, Super Bowl for you?
00:17Well, you're a new Patriots fan.
00:18Hell, I'd go Super Bowl.
00:19It's the first day of the playoffs.
00:21I'd go Super Bowl, too.
00:22Opening day, NFL Draft.
00:25Opening day.
00:26NFL Draft.
00:27Oh, really?
00:28Yeah.
00:28Boy, opening day, not only did you gloss over and go radio guy on what you thought about it,
00:34you've gone draft and Super Bowl.
00:36But this is the problem with opening day the last couple of years.
00:39So, I haven't known that it's been opening day a lot of the last couple of years
00:42because I've been playing these games in Japan at like 4 in the a.m.
00:45Fair.
00:46Okay, Astro's opening day.
00:47Astro's opening day.
00:48Love it.
00:49Look, here's the deal.
00:49Here's the deal, boys, is...
00:52I mean, I'm obviously a football guy.
00:54And if I'm being completely honest, my eye probably enjoys watching in and out of a basketball game more than
01:01I do a baseball game.
01:02So, I'm going to be honest.
01:03Baseball was my sport growing up.
01:04So, I have a love for it.
01:05But watching it is tough for me.
01:09But if you've ever attended opening day, Astro's opening day, on a day in Edo, I guess, nowadays is where
01:18most of the action would be.
01:20But if you've ever had an opening day when the weather was right, like we got tomorrow.
01:25We got 3-10 first pitch, I believe, something like that.
01:28Let me check the weather for you.
01:30I thought it was 4-some.
01:31I'll double check.
01:31Well, I may be on at Eastern time, even though I'm here in Central.
01:34I think it's 3-10, I think.
01:35But either way it goes, the point is, the weather's going to be beautiful.
01:40The weather's going to be 85.
01:41I mean, the weather's going to be 84, 85, 86.
01:44A little warm for March.
01:45Oh, get out of here, you pitting some bucky.
01:47Just because his armpit, he pits like a, I mean, just...
01:50I mean, that's true what you're saying.
01:53My armpits are like Niagara Falls.
01:54But we are setting a record this week with the temp in Houston.
01:57Oh, 85 degrees.
01:58That ought to turn you on.
01:59You ought to get a good chubby and get out and get on a patio somewhere.
02:02Instead, you're worried about your armpits pitting.
02:04No, I ain't even worried about my pits.
02:06I'm just hot, man.
02:07I'm hot all the time.
02:0885 opening day.
02:11Dyken, Edo, 3-10 first pitch.
02:17I'm going to be honest with you, boys.
02:18If I'm attending it, if I'm going,
02:22I think I'm putting opening day above Super Bowl and NFL draft.
02:27And that's tough for me being a football guy.
02:29It's a low-stakes game.
02:30You're going to be there with the entire home field that you're accustomed to.
02:35It's actually going to be full because let's be honest, hey, it starts to wane after the
02:39first couple of games of the season.
02:41And yeah, it's a little warm out there, but I don't know.
02:44Plus out the short shorts, maybe a Hawaiian shirt or something like that.
02:47Why not?
02:47Get yourself in line on the first baseline and get yourself an LT Ampo margarita for $3,000.
02:53It's only $3,000 this year.
02:54You talk to Crystal.
02:56You get through the line.
02:57Chip, chop, chip.
02:57You sit down.
02:58You have a margarita.
02:59You're going to be feeling great.
03:00And back in the day, I don't know anymore because I'm married with children.
03:02But back in the day, I appreciated that they busted out them short shorts and wife beaters
03:05as well on them 85-degree days.
03:08Tyler Milner.
03:09There was a day when Tyler Milner cared more about what they were wearing than his damn
03:12pittin', by the way.
03:12I think he still cares about what they're wearing.
03:14I do.
03:15And to be fair, it's not like we're going to have more than two games this season where the
03:20roof's open at Dyken.
03:21So I'm usually perfectly fine with that AC blast.
03:24Great point.
03:24The roof's supposed to be open, too.
03:26Opening day, add that.
03:27Possibly.
03:27Are you kidding me?
03:28No way.
03:29Possibly.
03:29You know what?
03:30I disagree.
03:30I disagree with this.
03:32You cannot open the roof when it's 85 out.
03:34You can't do that.
03:34Oh, are you kidding me?
03:35No, no, no.
03:35I don't want swamp ass.
03:37Oh, my God.
03:37Thank you, Paul.
03:38It doesn't breathe in that stadium.
03:39You got air conditioning.
03:40Hey, I'm going to tell you what, Paul.
03:41You can't reside in the great city of Houston and be afraid of a little swamp ass, especially
03:46on opening day.
03:47Are you kidding me?
03:4885?
03:48None of my sporting events.
03:50Oh, my God.
03:50You guys are kidding me.
03:51I've gotten used to it.
03:52I got two of y'all.
03:54I've gotten used to it, man.
03:55So, look.
03:56I went to high school in St. Petersburg, Florida.
03:57I used to go to the ninth wonder of the world, a Tropicana Field, often.
04:01Yep.
04:02Didn't have a roof last year.
04:03That was kind of sad.
04:03But I got used to watching baseball games and air conditioning.
04:07Gosh dang it.
04:08Paul.
04:09It's lovely.
04:10Show and Tyler.
04:12I mean, if you just said, hey, guys, give me the best setting for opening day, I would
04:18have started 80 to 85, open roof, mid-afternoon pitch, first pitch.
04:24And y'all are telling me that 85, you want the roof closed.
04:27Yeah, I want it closed.
04:28I think air conditioning is a tremendous invention.
04:30Y'all are filthy.
04:31As humans have come up.
04:32Y'all are filthy, man.
04:32Deal with a little swamp ass, man.
04:34It's life.
04:34It's a beautiful thing, man.
04:36It is opening day tomorrow, which means, guys, the Astros finalized their opening day
04:41roster today.
04:4213 pitchers, 13 position players.
04:44Does it always break out like that, Paulie G?
04:47Oh, that's a good question.
04:48Does it all?
04:48Well, I saw that.
04:49I thought, boy, I mean, I can't be the way it always falls out.
04:52It varies from time to time.
04:53I think it's going to be really interesting to see how the Astros handle their outfield.
04:58And I think you'd brought this up before the show.
05:00Some of the way that they're laying this roster out, it does make you wonder who's going to
05:04get the most opportunities to get jobs that are all potentially up for grabs, especially
05:09given what Dana Browns was saying about Cam Smith all offseason.
05:11Yeah, man.
05:12What they're going to do with the outfield.
05:13What's the starting rotation look like?
05:15How do they get the bats in the lineup?
05:17What do they do with Yordan Alvarez?
05:18Does father time jump on Altuve's back?
05:20We've got a lot of questions to cuss and discuss throughout the show.
05:23Let me run down this real quick, Paul.
05:25Just some of the names that you will probably recognize that are either on the roster or
05:31on some level of an IL.
05:33Just real quick.
05:34Christian Vasquez, veteran catcher brought in.
05:37He's been added to the 40 man.
05:39Look, look out Diaz.
05:40I think Diaz's bat's going to be in the lineup.
05:43I think his bat's going to be good enough to be in the lineup, but his defense is a problem.
05:46His defense is a problem.
05:48Going into this season without a tried and true, pelt on the wall, veteran catcher would
05:53have been an absolute risk.
05:55And Christian Vasquez being on his 40 man, even though they picked him up a week ago,
05:59I think his writing was on the wall, he was going to be on this 40 man.
06:04But Christian Vasquez, backup catcher, veteran backup catcher, he is on the 40 man.
06:09Zach DeZinzo, outfielder, and as you mentioned, also first baseman a little bit last year, right?
06:13Placed on the 10-day IL, long list on the 15-day IL.
06:17O'Neal Blanco, Tyler.
06:19O'Neal Blanco, bunch of pitchers, bunch of guys returning from injury at some point.
06:23De Los Santos, the name that sticks out here.
06:25Josh Hader has been added to the 15-day IL.
06:29Souza, Wisneski, what do we expect from Wisneski?
06:32Last year, I think it was one of those pleasant surprise, and then all of a sudden he goes
06:36down with the arm injury.
06:37Does he have a chance to even do anything this year?
06:39If we see him at any point this year, I think it's going to be in the same way that
06:42you saw
06:42some of those rando minor leaguers that the Astros seem to spawn out of nowhere, who come
06:46up and maybe look okay, maybe don't look so good.
06:50I'm bummed about the Josh Hader news.
06:51I mean, I get it.
06:53You know, you want to be careful with him after that very strange injury that he suffered towards
06:58the end of last year.
06:59You have so much money invested in him, but is it going to be 15 days?
07:03Because they say it's 15 days now, but it could very well turn into longer than that.
07:08And given our, I think, all of us mutual dislike of last year's Astros training and medical
07:14staff, it's going to be very curious to see how they handle things and return to play
07:18this year.
07:19All of those guys, headliner being Josh Hader, as you mentioned, on the 15-day IL.
07:24Another catcher, Cesar Salazar, has been designated for assignment.
07:28Appreciate you, Christian Vasquez.
07:29Oh, Cesar Salazar is not on the roster.
07:33Outfielder, Zach Cole.
07:34I think this is a big one.
07:35Outfielder, Zach Cole.
07:35I think a lot of folks, including last night, I was watching the broadcast, listening to the
07:41broadcast.
07:42I mean, I think there's some high hopes for Zach Cole.
07:43And with the outfield and the situation that it's in right now, I think a lot of folks expected
07:48Zach Cole to be maybe part of this opening day roster.
07:53And he has been optioned to AAA Sugarland.
07:56So, no Zach Cole to start things out.
07:59You already mentioned, Paul, what kind of jump for you there was the Josh Hader stuff.
08:03Another note here, first career opening day roster for a handful of players and guys that
08:08we're going to lean on.
08:09We're going to lean on in a big way.
08:11Mike Burrows.
08:12Oh, blue ball.
08:13Oh, blue ball.
08:14Oh, he's a first day up, first career opening day roster.
08:18Can I buy the 69 jersey?
08:19Yeah, that's right.
08:20Got to.
08:20Got to buy the 69.
08:23MI, high hopes for him.
08:25First year in the bigs.
08:26First league, first year in American baseball.
08:29Loprefito, Bryce Matthews, Munoz, Roa, I believe.
08:33Tang, and is it Weiss or Weiss?
08:36Do we know?
08:36Do we know?
08:37I'm going with Weiss.
08:38I know a few Weisses.
08:39They spell it W-E-I-S-E.
08:40I believe it is Weiss.
08:41There we go.
08:42He's a first career opening day roster for him.
08:45He looks good.
08:46I'll earn it.
08:46The one.
08:47Yeah.
08:47Well, he supposedly had a hell of a spring training.
08:50Burrows and MI are the two key guys there.
08:53First career opening day roster.
08:55Obviously, you're two and four starter in the rotation, I believe, right now for what
08:58that's worth.
08:59And then Bryce Matthews.
09:00Bryce Matthews had a hell of a spring training, apparently, man.
09:05He's on the opening day roster with some youth and can play multiple positions.
09:08Kind of a potentially maybe a Mauricio Dubon replacement right there with Bryce Matthews
09:13being able to play infield, second base, and your left field and center field position.
09:18So, Bryce Matthews had a hell of a spring training, apparently.
09:21He did look good, and we will see how it all plays out.
09:24You know, I'm going to make a Texans comparison here.
09:26I think the Astros are going to be doing with their outfield exactly what the Texans have
09:31been doing with their offensive line the last couple of years, which is figuring it
09:33out on the fly.
09:34So, that'll at the very least provide day-to-day conversation points, but there's going to
09:38be growing pains, and we're going to get frustrated with one of these poor suckers at some point
09:41because this should not be what the outfield is.
09:44They should have a better group than what they currently have right now, outside of a
09:48couple of guys who have been converted from position players over to outfielders, tweeners,
09:53essentially, and Jordan Alvarez, who you're terrified whenever he's out there because
09:56you don't want him to get hurt.
09:57Well, I mean, I speak for yourself over there, Paul.
10:00I'm not terrified one bit.
10:01I think they need to put his big ass out there in left field and answer that question.
10:05You got your left fielder, you got your center fielder, hopefully, and then that right field
10:07is your turnstile.
10:08Hell, last year we looked up and there was a turnstile in right, center, and left.
10:11It was like, hell, I don't know who's trotting out there at this point in time.
10:14Some of that was injury and some of it was just the way that they believe in rotating
10:18them outfielders.
10:19We'll see what they end up doing.
10:23But that's your opening day roster.
10:24It's, you know, the big names obviously are there, but there are some of the moves that were
10:29some guys that were on the bubble, so to speak.
10:30There are some guys that were on the bubble, so to speak.
