00:20You know what the books mean to me and what your films mean to me,
00:23but the thing I found myself reading over and over again
00:26were the six chapters early on in The Fellowship that y'all never developed
00:30into the first movie back in the day.
00:32It's basically the chapter is Three is Company through Fog on the Barrow Downs.
00:37He continued,
00:38and I thought, oh wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story.
00:43Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books
00:45while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?
00:49Colbert revealed that he then started talking it over with his son Peter, who's a screenwriter.
00:53It took me a few years to scrape my courage into a pile to give you a call,
00:57but about two years ago I did.
00:59You liked it enough to talk to me about it,
01:01and ever since then the two of us have been working with
01:04the brilliant Philippa Boyens on how to develop this story.
01:08Colbert, a lifelong Lord of the Rings fan, added that the team at Warner Brothers also loved it.
01:13The installment with the working title The Lord of the Rings Shadow of the Past
01:17will come after Lord of the Rings Hunt for Gollum,
01:19which is currently in development from director Andy Serkis.
01:22Colbert is best known for hosting The Late Show on CBS,
01:25but it will air its final episode on May 21st,
01:28after the network decided to cancel the long-running late-night talk show last year.
01:32I did not think I would have the time.
01:34As much as I love it, I knew I couldn't do that and do this show at the same time,
01:38but it turns out I'm going to be free starting this summer.
01:41So isn't that fortunate?
