00:42and everything up front.
00:43I think I want to start by just taking off here.
00:45Let's get into this.
00:46Let's become Iron Man here.
00:48And maybe either Ryan,
00:50if you can just talk us through what we're seeing,
00:52what we're experiencing,
00:54and what players can experience for themselves
00:56when they download this demo.
00:57Yeah, so at the very beginning of the demo,
00:58you're actually getting the very beginning
01:00of the full game here,
01:01which is where players learn how to fly.
01:03They're Tony Stark.
01:04They're in their new impulse armor suit.
01:07And yeah, we've been working a lot on this tutorial,
01:09but here we go.
01:10Ryan Darcy, let's take off.
01:12Mark III test.
01:13How cool is that?
01:13Starting with maneuvering thrusters.
01:16Hands by my sides.
01:18Palms back.
01:19So he's kind of talking you through
01:21how to fly as Iron Man
01:22because it's not as simple as just pressing a button
01:24or just like instantly levitating.
01:27You have to be Iron Man.
01:29You have to use these repulsors,
01:30these hand-mounted repulsors
01:32to kind of control your flight.
01:34Exactly.
01:35Yeah, coming from the PlayStation Move controllers,
01:37you hold them in your hands,
01:38you pull the triggers,
01:39and the thrusters are coming out of your palms
01:42just like Iron Man, right?
01:43So that's what we typically tell people
01:44when they ask,
01:45like, how do I fly in your game?
01:47I don't know, just fly like Iron Man.
01:48Yeah, yeah.
01:49How would you fly if you were Iron Man?
01:51Exactly.
01:51That's so cool.
01:52Oh, man.
01:53Is that immediately when you were starting
01:55to begin work on this game,
01:57is that immediately like,
01:58well, that's how flight's going to work?
02:00Or were there other options
02:01or were there other, you know,
02:02flight schemes that you looked at before that?
02:04You know, when we started this game
02:05over three years ago
02:06with Troy Johnson,
02:07the lead engineer on the game,
02:09he, on the gameplay side,
02:11that was the first thing he tried.
02:12He's like, hey,
02:12if we're going to go pitch Marvel
02:14and do an Iron Man VR game,
02:16it would make sense
02:16for the thrusters to come out of your palms
02:18let's just go try it.
02:19And we never thought
02:20it would work as good as it did.
02:21And it's a miracle
02:23because prototypes typically
02:24don't go that well.
02:25I want to say within the first 48 hours
02:26we thought, you know,
02:27we have some magic here.
02:28That's awesome.
02:29Yeah, and that makes for
02:30some really interesting combat situations
02:32later in the demo as well.
02:33We're seeing some of that here
02:34with the repulsor blasts.
02:36Is that the right term for that?
02:37Exactly, yeah.
02:38And so, you know,
02:38back to that PlayStation Move controller,
02:41you pull it down,
02:42you're pulling the triggers
02:42when you want to fly forward,
02:44but when you want to shoot,
02:45just like Ryan Darcy's doing right now,
02:46you extend them out
02:47and face them up
02:49like kind of horizontal, right?
02:50So the shots of the repulsor blast
02:52are coming out of your palms.
02:53Nice, nice.
02:54And it looked like
02:55when he was kind of hovering over there,
02:56it looked like there was just
02:57a little bit of assist going on
02:58there to make sure
02:59that it feels good.
03:01Oh, yeah.
03:01We're cheating
03:02all over the place here.
03:04Yeah, it looks all really natural,
03:06but yeah, under the hood,
03:07lots of different aim assists,
03:08flight assists,
03:09these invisible bumpers,
03:11all these areas
03:11and amazing tech
03:13that the team built
03:13to make sure
03:14that it's as comfortable
03:15as possible
03:15while you're being Iron Man.
03:17I feel like that's kind of,
03:18that's a motif
03:19that we've seen
03:19in a lot of VR games
03:20up until now
03:21is the idea of developers
03:22finding transparent ways
03:24to help the player
03:25so that it doesn't feel
03:26like they're getting help,
03:27but it just makes the experience
03:28feel more comfortable,
03:29more natural.
03:30Absolutely.
03:30And, you know,
03:31one of the things
03:31that we knew
03:32we wanted to go out
03:32with this game
03:33was we want to spend
03:34a lot of time
03:35making sure
03:35that it didn't feel experimental.
03:36because we know
03:38that people love
03:39the smaller VR experiences,
03:41trying out little things,
03:42but I think as VR has matured,
03:44as the PlayStation VR platform
03:46has matured,
03:47players want a meatier experience
03:49and this is the extra time
03:51that we got recently
03:52has really allowed us
03:52to kind of smooth out
03:55the rough edges
03:56and build on all these learnings
03:58that other VR developers
03:59have taken
04:00and yeah,
04:01and have a game
04:02that just feels really natural
04:03and really polished too.
04:04Yeah, yeah.
04:05I love that sunset shot
04:07that we were seeing there.

04:12Yeah, because we're out here

04:15and yeah,
04:16our team just did
04:17an incredible job.
04:17It looks gorgeous.

04:20it looks awesome.
04:21It looks really clean.
04:22We are in some sort of aircraft.
04:24What are we seeing now,
04:24Ryan Payton?
04:25So we are in
04:25Tony Stark's private jet.
04:28We wanted to in the demo
04:29not only have
04:29kind of gameplay action missions
04:32but also have cinematic moments
04:33to show off that
04:34but the game has
04:36both a really great story
04:37and great action moments
04:38but for the sake of this video
04:39we figured
04:39hey, let's just show
04:40a little bit of a teaser
04:41we don't want to spoil
04:42the story too much
04:43and then we're just going
04:44to kind of cut into
04:45a little bit later
04:46in this format.
04:46Can we at least open
04:47the suitcase?

05:10quickly?
05:11Things have definitely
05:12escalated rather quickly here.
05:14So yeah, Tony is free-falling
05:16out of his damaged
05:17private jet
05:18without his suit.
05:19That's not good.
05:20But what is
05:21like more Iron Man
05:23than falling out
05:23of this airplane
05:24and having a suit up
05:25in midair?
05:26Yes, I love it.
05:28We took a big inspiration
05:29from the films, obviously,
05:30but also back to
05:31the Demon in a Bottle
05:33comic book series
05:34back in the late 60s.
05:36That really is just
05:37the most Iron Man thing.
05:38Let me relive
05:40that sweet scene
05:41where the suit comes to him.
05:43We knew we had to do it,
05:44especially in VR.
05:44It just has this
05:45really great feeling.
05:46Yeah.
05:46And also a terrifying feeling
05:47as you're going closer
05:49to the ground.
05:51Yeah, how are you feeling,
05:51Ryan Darcy?
05:52I'm all right.
05:53I'm going to be safe.
05:54You good?
05:54Okay.
05:54He's played this
05:55once or twice.
05:56Yeah, all right.
05:57But yeah, we wanted
05:57to have a classic
05:58kind of Iron Man
05:59suit-up sequence.
06:00And this leads into
06:01the second big mission
06:03that we have
06:04in the demo.
06:05The demo contains
06:06a really robust demo.
06:08It's got two campaign missions
06:10plus some optional missions
06:11as well
06:12and lots of areas
06:13for players
06:14to kind of test their skills.
06:15But this mission
06:16we're about to jump into
06:18is one of the more
06:19set-piece types of missions.
06:21Oh, nice.
06:21It's less about
06:22kind of flying around
06:23wherever you want to fly
06:24and more about
06:24this kind of epic set-piece
06:26as you're trying to
06:27rescue this jet
06:28that Pepper Potts
06:29is on
06:29that just got attacked
06:30by our main villain
06:31in the game.
06:32Yeah, it seems pretty important.
06:34Yeah, it's very important.
06:35We can't let Pepper
06:38fall at the hands
06:39of one of our big
06:40big villains.
06:44All right, so Tony's
06:45back in business.
06:46He's got his suit
06:46equipped and
06:47his armor equipped
06:48in him.
06:50How fast can you cover
06:511,500 meters?
06:53This fast.
06:54This fast?
06:55Oh, that's cool.
06:56Just flying straight
06:57through the title.
06:58I love it.
06:58Yeah, that was one of the things
06:59we learned through
07:00VR development
07:01is that 2D UI
07:03just kind of printed
07:04on the screen
07:04is less exciting
07:05than having it in the world.
07:06Yeah.
07:07And we've actually been
07:07taking a lot of that
07:08kind of detail
07:10that we initially
07:10put into the HUD
07:11and are starting to put
07:12in the world.
07:12Like you see the scanning,
07:13for example.
07:14Yeah.
07:14It's easier for players
07:15and it feels a lot
07:15more immersive as well.
07:17Yeah.
07:17HUD is really interesting.
07:19It seems like an interesting
07:19thing to address
07:20in specifically this game
07:22because in the world
07:25of Iron Man
07:25he is constantly
07:26surrounded by that HUD
07:27at all times.
07:28So how do you,
07:29did you like see that
07:30as just an easy excuse
07:31to like,
07:31well, okay,
07:32well obviously we can
07:32just put HUD stuff
07:33on the screen
07:33because it's Iron Man.
07:35It's interesting
07:35because at the beginning
07:36of development
07:37our instinctual move
07:38was to just add
07:39all this extraneous
07:40detail in the HUD
07:42because that's what
07:42you kind of see
07:43in the films
07:43and in the comics, right?
07:44but we found
07:45that when you actually
07:46play in VR
07:46it's closer to what
07:48it's like in real life
07:48and that your eyes
07:49look at different planes
07:50and it's actually
07:51really difficult
07:52to read a lot of meters
07:53and numbers
07:54on the sides
07:54of your periphery.
07:55Yeah.
07:56So that's why
07:56we've been moving
07:56a lot more things
07:57into the actual game space.
08:00That being said though,
08:01it does feel cool
08:02to have all these things
08:03in your periphery
08:03even if you're not necessarily
08:05looking at them all the time.
08:06Yeah.
08:07So here we're finally
08:07introducing the player
08:08to one of our early
08:09and easier enemies.
08:11This is where players
08:12are starting to learn
08:12how to fly and shoot
08:13which is really core
08:14to our game
08:15and really unique
08:16to our game too.
08:17And that's why
08:18it's taken us so long
08:19to I think really
08:20nail the core mechanics
08:21and introducing
08:22the core mechanics
08:22because there's not
08:24a lot of games out there
08:24where it allows you
08:25to fly at 250 miles an hour
08:27and shoot repulsors
08:28out of your palms, right?
08:29Just back to the UI
08:31and the HUD for one second.
08:32I love that you've got
08:33some of the parallax
08:34stuff going on with it
08:35so that it gives it
08:35more of that 3D feel.
08:37I can only imagine
08:37we're just looking
08:38at a 2D output
08:39of the game right now
08:40but I can only imagine
08:41in the headset
08:41that must look much cooler.
08:43Absolutely, yeah.
08:44It's one of those challenges
08:45of showing off the game
08:46in a 2D presentation
08:48where the game
08:49just looks and feels
08:50so much better
08:51and more immersive
08:52when you're in
08:52the PlayStation VR headset.
08:53That's true of any VR game.
08:55Anytime you try
08:56to show off a VR game
08:57it's like,
08:57no, but trust me everybody
08:58it's way cooler
09:00once you're inside the headset.
09:01Yeah, it's absolutely true.
09:04So right here
09:04we have one other
09:06kind of wave of enemies
09:07but one of the things
09:08that I think is good
09:08to point out
09:09is that working with Marvel
09:11one of the things
09:12that helped us understand
09:12midway through development
09:13yeah, with the rocket punch
09:15Ryan Darcy
09:16is that being about
09:18what it's like to be
09:18an Iron Man
09:19and being a superhero
09:20isn't just about
09:21just punching
09:22and shooting your way
09:22through problems
09:23it's about also
09:23doing heroic things
09:24so midway through development
09:26we actually added
09:26a number of elements
09:27to this mission
09:28for example
09:28like you saw
09:29a little bit earlier
09:30where Ryan Darcy
09:31was putting out the fire
09:32through fire suppressants
09:33that are coming out
09:34of his repulsors
09:34we've been adding
09:36a lot of those
09:36kind of elements
09:37that are unique
09:38one-off elements
09:38that are really difficult
09:40to build
09:40but feel so good
09:41in VR
09:42it's that physicality
09:43of kind of
09:45putting out the fire
09:46we're going to see
09:46something else like this
09:47coming up pretty shortly
09:48so it's not again
09:49just about action
09:50and just beating things up
09:51right
09:51yeah, so many games
09:52are just like
09:53about destroy, destroy, destroy
09:54but you have to
09:55actually save people
09:56in here
09:57if you're a superhero
09:57right
09:57exactly right
09:58and when you're
09:59like knee deep
10:00in development
10:00you kind of
10:01sometimes lose
10:01the forest for the trees
10:02and that's why
10:03it's really great
10:03to be partnered
10:04with Marvel
10:04in this game
10:05because they remind us
10:07of what a quintessential
10:09great Marvel game
10:10is like
10:10how involved have they been
10:12has it been like
10:13them coming in
10:14and asking you
10:16to adjust lots of things
10:17or do they kind of
10:18trust you to make the game
10:19and then they make broader
10:20yeah, you know
10:21I think the relationship
10:22has really evolved
10:23over the three year
10:24development of the game
10:25early on
10:25it was about
10:26teaching us
10:27what making a great
10:29Marvel product
10:29is all about
10:30and then over time
10:31it's more about
10:31just kind of checking in
10:33and helping us
10:33when we have questions
10:35or help guide us
10:36in the right direction
10:37but yeah
10:38it's been a really
10:38fun partnership
10:39and we've learned
10:39a lot from those guys
10:40speaking of the
10:41Marvel collaboration
10:42tell me about
10:43some of the suits
10:44that we'll see
10:44oh, absolutely
10:45yeah, so
10:46speaking of which
10:48so
10:48Iron Man has this
10:50brand new armor
10:51called the Impulse Armor
10:52which is unique
10:53to this game
10:53and we worked with
10:54this really famous
10:55Marvel designer
10:56named Adi Gropnov
10:57who did just
10:59an incredible job
10:59helping us
11:00and he's very fast too
11:02which helps with development
11:03and what he did
11:04with our armor
11:05is just really remarkable
11:06and it's unique
11:07to our game
11:07and it's not just
11:09a static armor either
11:11like players will go back
11:11to Tony's garage
11:13they will customize
11:14the armor
11:15swap in different weapons
11:16and also apply
11:17different custom decos
11:19right, these different
11:19kind of skins
11:20if you will
11:20oh, cool
11:38oh, so you're
11:39alluding to
11:39like unlocking them
11:40like by way
11:41of in-game challenges
11:42yeah, there's various
11:43ways to unlock
11:44the custom decos
11:45as well as
11:45so different augments
11:47and weapons
11:48that you can apply
11:48to your impulse armor
11:50as well
11:50sweet
11:51and here what we're
11:52seeing is the skull
11:52it's one of our
11:54a little bit harder
11:54enemies that have shields
11:56and requires players
11:57to learn how to
11:58not only fly and shoot
11:59but also dodge
12:00when they're coming in
12:01at you
12:01oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
12:03like for example
12:04right there
12:04nice, right
12:05oh, that was a nice
