00:56he wanted to push for a far higher degree of realism in Senua's face and her expressions.
01:02And to achieve this, he suggested we go and visit a company called 3Lateral out in Serbia.
01:07And this is a company that specializes in extremely high resolution 3D scanning of people's faces
01:15and subsequently creating character rigs so that we could use that in real time.
01:20My company is called 3Lateral and we specialize in characters.
01:24That's our primary passion.
01:27Since our inception, we made the decision that we will not try to do anything else
01:32before we master this skill.
01:35Senua has a lot of face paint on her,
01:37so we wanted to capture that alongside the facial expressions
01:41because the makeup and paint itself can change the way you express yourself.
01:47Hugh asked me to experiment with different types of makeup
01:50to find something that crackles really nicely in the face
01:53because they wanted to get really good detail for the face scan.
01:57So I just experimented with different types of makeup and face paints
02:00and ended up just using a normal face mask from the shop
02:05and that seemed to give the best results.
02:11The night before the scan was due to happen, we did one final makeup test in the hotel
02:15just so that we could all make sure that everything was working as expected.
02:20Happy with the results,
02:21all we had to do then was to relax and wait.
02:25That's it.
02:26I can roll split down and forth.
02:303Lateral had a brand new experimental scanner built,
02:33which was really the best of its kind,
02:35but it was so large they couldn't fit it into their studio,
02:38so they had to create it in a nearby apartment.
02:41As the scanning device is such a closely guarded secret,
02:45we were asked not to film,
02:46but it's safe to say that it's far more impressive than our plant pot.
02:50So is that without makeup?
02:54I have a very smooth skin.
02:56I'm sorry.
02:58Getting into the scanner felt like entering a giant spaceship,
03:02like you were really cut off from the outside world
03:04and the only way to communicate with everyone else was over Skype.
03:09High school, and here we go.
03:24Once in the scanner, they wanted to capture every detail of how my face looks and moves,
03:28so I had to go through over 100 different facial expressions,
03:32which took a whole day.
03:41Again, the specialization is a big thing with our team,
03:45so this scanner just scans the face and nothing else.
03:48but it's built to scan it in such detail so that we see all the tiniest wrinkles around the eyes
03:54and everything that's important for the emotion that that human face portrays.
04:01We are just starting to see the results of the process,
04:04and the facial expressions and complexity of the expressions
04:08is an order of magnitude higher than anything we've done in Heavenly Sword or DMC or Enslaved.
04:18I think everybody knows that game audience has been accustomed to certain compromises
04:25when it comes to seeing characters, and that's okay because they can see behind the flopping mouth
04:33and things like that, but what a truly believable face trick gives you is the drama, the storytelling.
04:41I guess that's the passion to create characters who you can really perceive as characters immediately,
04:49not having to imagine the other side of them.
