00:36«To la città Senua, we willigli fulffili our vow».
00:58«To create a character of intense realism, beauty, anger and history.
01:03A mystery that drives the action and story forward,
01:06revealing more and more seductive details as she descends deeper into a vision of hell.
01:11She is a challenging female form.
01:13Not sexy, not skimpy, not young, not skinny,
01:16yet stunning, compelling and believable».
01:18«With this brief, Alex started working up some concepts.
01:21Some were too game-like, some were too fantastical.
01:24But eventually, he arrived at two illustrations,
01:26a full-body shot and a portrait that really captured the essence of the character.
01:30In Celtic culture, women fought alongside men, often leading them into battle.
01:36And in northern Britain, a collection of Celts called the Picts,
01:39also known as the Painted People, were considered fierce barbarians by the Romans,
01:43who built an 80-mile-long wall from coast to coast called Hadrian's Wall,
01:47just to keep them at bay.
01:49«Cenua is the Picts, and as the Picts are tough people,
01:52it was important that she reflected that».
01:55«To realise Senua is a tough Celtic barbarian,
01:58we got Stu on board to join the team as art director».
02:01«So I took the concept art and tried to break it down into real-world references
02:05and expand on some areas in terms of their detail.
02:09She had to be kind of lean, but also have very pronounced kind of muscles.
02:14We wanted her to look like a hardened warrior type,
02:17full of scars and battle wounds.
02:19From here, Claire took it and the brief was to do kind of a 3D concept quite quickly,
02:25just stuck it in ZBrush and sculpt something up that we can iterate on quickly
02:29and move around and really get a feel for the character».
02:31Stu started prototyping ideas on how to create organic materials in real-time,
02:36such as fur, cloth and hair, that can react to the wind and animation.
02:40These are all things that are very difficult to achieve in Engid,
02:43but add greatly to the believability of the character.
02:46Both Craig and Stu also tried out a new face scanning method using a member of the team.
02:51This was to create a more realistic looking character for the release of our Hellblade teaser trailer.
02:56«I used a process called photogrammetry to record Melina.
02:59Essentially we take a lot of photographs from different angles
03:02and then reconstruct them to create a 3D model and a texture map.
03:05So I scanned in her paws and her wrinkles in 3D,
03:08and this gave us a really nice interaction with the lighting,
03:10and made her skin feel much more life-like and natural».
03:13Scanning a real-world face and using it directly in the game can lead to the uncanny valley effect,
03:18where a face doesn't feel natural or believable in the context of the CG world.
03:23But it did give Stu an excellent base from which to sculpt Senua's unique face.
03:27«There are a lot of elements that make her feel believable,
03:30such as creating a good skin shader, reflections in the eye,
03:34so individually modelled eyelashes, sweat, mud, scars, cracks in the makeup and how it interacts with her skin.
03:42It's all about telling her story visually».
03:45«While doing research, I was fascinated by an island of Scotland called Horkney.
03:51It's a place of deep, deep mystery, but importantly, it's a place where the Vikings had invaded,
03:57and it is thought that they wiped out the native Pictish camps that lived there.
04:01So I imagine Senua fierce and battle-worn,
04:04fighting for survival against what must have seemed like a hellish race of giant Norsemen».
04:10It's important to say that Senua's character is a work in progress, and will evolve throughout the project.
04:16Creating a good in-game model for use in the trailer is one thing,
04:19but getting her ready for the intense demands of gameplay is another.
04:22However, the feedback we've received so far has been encouraging,
04:26so that's something we'll take with us moving forward.
