00:06We wanted to make
00:07a real character, someone that
00:09you could look into when you felt this isn't a costume
00:12this is a real person
00:15Early on
00:16we were thinking how do we re-skin
00:17these worlds with these kind of hellish
00:19elements and we wanted to have our own
00:21look without it being too cliché
00:23A world that is full of life
00:26full of movement is very vivid
00:27and I think in Hellblade we can take that
00:30in a direction that's a bit darker
00:31than what we've done before
00:50Hellblade is Ninja Theory's
00:52new project and it's an
00:53independent AAA game
00:54so we can have complete creative
00:57control of the game
00:57and design it in such a way that it's
01:00focused specifically on our fans
01:02and our supporters
01:03and it's going to be focused really on three things
01:05and that's melee combat
01:07a deep engaging character story
01:09and on a unique art vision
01:12Hellblade is about taking those
01:14to the next level
01:25It's based on Celtic
01:27history and Viking history
01:29they uncovered a Celtic goddess
01:311600 years ago in England
01:33her name's Senua
01:34we don't know anything about her
01:35there's some inscription there but that's all
01:37you're afraid of the dark
01:39I'm being patient
01:41this history that must have been in that character
01:43is just unknown
01:44so that in itself was interesting
01:46but then to create a character that wasn't your typical
01:49sexy heroine
01:50we've been trying to work against that
01:52trying to make her more real
01:54more like she lived in that time and period
01:56I think it signals a kind of more maturity
01:59in our way of thinking
02:01and I think that fits in with
02:03where we see technology going
02:05it's become more mature
02:07the worlds that we can create seem more real
02:09the characters need to feel more real
02:11we need to fight against the CG look
02:14I see you
02:21and kind of put things that are difficult to do in the game
02:24like dirt and fur and hair
02:26and although it's still very fantastical
02:28it's got a different twist on fantasy
02:30that's much more based on
02:32on her
02:33her inner eye
02:34and how she sees the world
02:36it's like her personal descent into hell
02:38is reflected in the world
02:39it's more of an inner journey
02:52it's her biggest fears and nightmares
02:54kind of manifested in a visual language
02:56and that's kind of super exciting
02:59we want to take advantage of a lot of post work for that
03:01but also a lot of effects work
03:04and that's what I'm most excited about
03:07is to really not just have it as a cool effect
03:11but to tell a story with these elements
03:23in Hellblade
03:24in Hellblade we wanted the world to feel more like
03:26that you've been dropped into this island area
03:29and initial tests were done where we've got the logo for Hellblade
03:33we've not shoehorned the logo in there
03:36there's natural elements and there's subtle kind of man-made features
03:40that when you do pull out you begin to read that
03:42so we started by putting the logo in
03:44and using some negative and positive space
03:46and trying to just quickly rough out what this kind of volcanic circle could look like
03:50with the heart of the citadel in the center
03:52and then just very quickly got that into Unreal 4
03:55dropping ourselves onto the mountains
03:57and looking back at the whole kind of circle of the logo
04:00and then imagining well that looks like these little spines coming through the water
04:05and that could be rock and this could be marshland
04:08and so this new approach of drawing on strengths that we see
04:12and then making features within those
04:14seems to be working really well at the moment
04:21We want it to be the most realistic game that we've done
04:24and Unreal Engine will definitely help support that
04:27with all of their leaps forward with the physical based shading
04:30and their dynamic lighting
04:31it's definitely going to be a really visual feast
04:34and a great journey to go through to see our interpretation of hell
