01:21with a serious leg injury that's triggered a crisis at home me my mom are like best friends she's always
01:28caring and she's always done everything for us around the house but since the injury and she
01:34couldn't do anything the house kept getting worse we just have a lot of stuff that we don't move and
01:41keeps building up and building up everything's everywhere it's just a massive war zone it's not
01:47good I would love to clean the place up but Rita's very proud and she likes to do things her
01:53way I was
01:55been mum that did everything for her family so I worked six days a week but still got home in
02:00time
02:00to cook dinner and then all of a sudden because of my accident everything stopped the clutter is an
02:06absolute nightmare we love having people over and I don't like having people over now it's embarrassing
02:14we've really hit a standstill and it's about time we got some help
02:26suffering a debilitating injury after being fiercely independent can be devastating and for Rita who still
02:33wants to do everything her way the mental block stopping her from accepting her family's help has
02:39left the household in complete disarray

03:23or probably 90 at least she's honest I'm very honest I noticed crutches I noticed a mobility scooter and I
03:31noticed the walker talk to me let's start right there I had an accident at work shattered my leg I
03:39stepped in a hole and my leg went one way my foot went the other way had two surgeries was
03:47bed bound for
03:48about four weeks and non-weight bearing for about four and a half months oh wow who looked after you
03:56that would be me my aval really yeah took time off work took time off uni impressive look after mom
04:05that's fantastic wow so family's obviously a big thing huge we were all doing everything for her but
04:14then there was times I'd walk in and mom was just in tears because she was like she felt like
04:19she was
04:20a burden on everyone because she couldn't do anything we'd have to like reassure her that like none of us
04:25ever thought that she was a burden how do you get around now sometimes the cane okay and sometimes
04:31unaided it just depends on the day and how sore the leg is and on a scale of one to
04:37ten how much pain are
04:38you in usually oh we're sitting at about six wow okay that's still pretty serious yeah yeah okay yeah
04:43sure what are you thinking I'm definitely noticing some building materials and I'm noticing a half
04:48finished wall that was a room that you just wanted to block off yeah so that we could have it
04:52as a
04:52separate space all right and it's just never been finished I like doing DIY that's just part of a
04:58project that my legs going yeah not yet okay you've got a legit excuse I have got a legit excuse
05:04I don't know
05:04what there's is I think it's when mom gets started get the hell out of the way is this the

05:14area do you all hang out in here watch some TV mainly the young ones okay so the young adults

05:34so talk to me about this room what would you like it to be I'd probably say we're thinking just

05:39chill cozy area for us to you know hang out with our friends okay so what watch TV here yeah

05:46and your parents watch TV somewhere else in the house just a bit further down the house and it gets
05:51pretty noisy with their TV and our TV trying to battle each other yep I can see I've got a
05:55few
05:55challenges here the carpet looks like it hasn't been replaced for ages the ceiling vents look
06:01quite prehistoric is the heating system working no no and the blinds don't match either no they don't
06:07yeah okay whose room is this this is my room okay so separate rooms yes why separate rooms two reasons
06:22first of all was my injury and music wakes up really early in the morning about quarter to
06:27four before work so it's easier for him to clomp around in here and not worry about waking me up
06:33but
06:33I noticed that it doesn't feel like an adult's room yeah it is my room now but it used to
06:39belong to my
06:40eldest Tanya yeah the other thing I want to ask about is this shape on the wall that's a size
06:47six
06:47basketball I think basketball players so help me out here are these all your clothes in here no
06:52that's not that's still all his and how long ago did he move out cheese and there's still some of
06:57his
06:57clothes yes he lives out of basket got it well that's going to change okay this room needs a
07:02complete overhaul you have a mood a feeling for how you'd like to feel when you come into this room
07:07I
07:07I won't say no to comforts yeah but uh he's a humble man yeah look oh yeah I'm humble but
07:17uh that
07:18looks good up there doesn't you like your footy team I like my football okay you have a room as
07:23well yes I do okay I'll leave you here you and I let's check out your room let's go this

07:32this is the restful haven it doesn't really look like that it's a little bit constricted so how long
07:43has this sense of chaos pervaded your life 18 months since the injury what else has happened since then
07:50everything's happened since then mum passed as well what happened it's called anaplastic thyroid cancer
08:00no treatment no cure three to six months if you're lucky oh okay I'm going to breathe through
08:07this she was tough she went on her terms yeah she didn't even sit in it for a minute she
08:17just went
08:17oh so they can't make me better I said no mama they can't she said okay then so she looked
08:24at the
08:25oncologist she said oh I'll have euthanasia thanks so it's called VAD voluntary assisted dying
08:34she made her decision
08:41yep from the moment she walked into the hospital she got seven days
08:45so has all this just been compounded by that it has I've still got some of mum's stuff
08:53yeah yeah yeah what kind of stuff some of her clothes where are they in the front room so
09:01all of this is really a reflection of the chaos of the last 18 months yeah you keep doing that
09:10you
09:10keep gasping for breath yeah and that's what it feels yeah it's how it feels like you're drowning
09:15yeah so what we need to do is we need to get through this clutter to get you to the
09:22other side
09:23where you can breathe okay okay that's our goal let's do it do a deep breath breathing okay you're
09:30ready to pack up I am okay let's do that guys let's bring in the boxes let's get going
09:39to regain order in the household everything is boxed up so decluttering can begin at a nearby
09:45warehouse and while Angie hunts for treasures amongst the mess Peter takes care of yes eggs
09:55jam-packed wardrobe so one of the great things about these wardrobe boxes is you can easily hang
10:01stuff in for moving and when you get them to the new location unload them straight away load it up
10:07as I pass them to you thank you drop them in good job excellent
10:16I'm feeling anxious and apprehensive things have got to be done my way so watching people pack for
10:21you is really quite frightening you feel the anxiety that's going to be difficult for Rita to
10:28let go of things but I think she needs this coming up Sheree kick-starts the reno
10:41the family is stunned by their enormous clutter what's the story and Peter hits a nerd oh that just
10:49made me emotional
10:57thousands of items are being removed from Rita yes egg arvor and Alina's house where clutter had taken
11:04over after mum Rita suffered a debilitating leg injury with the last man loaded up everything's taken to
11:16the space invaders warehouse where it's unpacked and sorted into categories so the family can decide what
11:24to keep donate or recycle there's a mammoth amount of stuff here that Rita has admitted is mostly hurt
11:32straight ahead since her leg injury left her with ongoing pain this once do-it-all mum has struggled to
11:39keep on top of things while still resisting help from her family and losing her own mum to cancer in
11:46the last 12 months has only added to the chaotic clutter that Rita now has to deal with when I
11:52came
11:52to your house there was a ton of clutter on the count of three I want you to open your
11:56eyes and have
11:57a look at what that looks like when all of the clutter is set up in one place one two
12:03three open your eyes oh
12:18oh my we have almost a thousand books DVDs and CDs
12:27don't that's crazy this is unreal linen covers all of these tables here that's not yes here are your
12:37clothes Daniel's clothes as well all of this furniture came out of those three rooms and perhaps most
12:43impressively Rita shoes folded clothes and hanging clothes there are more than 70 purses and bags on these
12:55two tables that's what's up all of this took 125 moving boxes to get here to the hall
13:09so I calculate at least 70% of what you see here needs to go wow that's a lot yeah
13:17give me two words
13:19for how you want to feel when you walk into the front room or your bedrooms comfortable and
13:24happy good relaxation okay relaxed and chilled chill that's great yes enjoy for what it's meant to be
13:33okay good okay yeah I was gonna say relaxed and happy okay good then everything you choose has to help
13:39you create that mood and that feeling anything else out the door let's go come with me while the
13:49clutter has to go the house also needs a big revamp with the demolition phase getting underway
13:58Sheree has just two days in a small budget to turn the once jam-packed front room into an
14:04entertainer's dream for Arvor and Alina make over their brother Tuniel's old bedroom into a relaxing haven for
14:12yes egg and transform Rita's cramped bedroom into a calming oasis to aid her recovery after pulling
14:22up the decades old carpet I'm stoked to discover the original boards underneath are in great condition so
14:28rather than cover them up with new flooring I can save the cash to upgrade the ducted heating that's no
14:33longer working ripping out the old narrow ducts an aging gas burner from the roof space is a big job
14:42but installing a modern electric system will save the family heaps on their winter energy bills and
14:48adding aircon will keep the place cool in summer next the team are tackling a problem of seismic proportions
15:04in the front room while Rita had closed out one side of the room with a DIY wall the open
15:11entry means
15:11kids movie nights would send loud noise throughout the rest of the house so we're adding a new
15:18wall and door to the hallway to reduce noise and give the young adults some privacy plus improving
15:24the room layout by creating a built-in unit for a new large screen TV at one end and a
15:30new seating
15:30area for playing board games at the other so Rita these tables are your clothes shoes belts and bags plus
15:41three hanging racks if you had to guess what percentage of these do you actually wear I'll say 20 but
15:47it
15:47might be closer to 10 okay you should only have three kinds of clothes in your closet clothes that
15:52fits you now mm-hmm clothes that when you wear them you feel great in them and clothes that when
15:57you
15:57wear them people say well you look really well put together there's not many of those okay well then
16:02if they don't fit those categories they shouldn't be in your closet correct because when you open your
16:07closet it should welcome you your room felt like chaos okay so here's what we're gonna do Elena help
16:13your mum yeah stay or go let's go okay good skins keep keep keep keep keep turn it okay keep
16:26from the
16:27outset Rita's keeping a lot don't I keep oh wait keep despite admitting most of these clothes don't
16:35suit who she is now and that she may never fully recover from her injury so I'm pulling out an
16:43item
16:43that I hope will resonate more strongly this was hanging in your closet yes what's the story um that
16:53was my Deb dress last year lots of really good memories with that dress best memory for you of
16:57that night watching her because I was in a wheelchair at the time okay so I couldn't get up and
17:03dance but
17:03my whole family did and watching them was fun but it did kill me that I couldn't get up and
17:08have a
17:09dance with her okay oh what that just made me emotional because I love dancing I haven't had I
17:20haven't danced for almost 18 months yeah and that night was special it was so fun take care of this
17:26okay it's important yeah okay let's move on it's clear that Rita misses being the active outgoing person
17:33she once was be tough oh yeah I am donate donate good and while that's making it difficult for her
17:42to
17:42let old clothes go yay or nay nay it's great that Alina is pushing her mum in the right direction
17:48oh heels are out of the question heels are all gone so when we started tables covered now we have

17:57boxes off to donation these are all the folded clothes you're keeping one hanging rack and the Deb
18:04dress how do you actually feel lighter there you go we've got lots more to do let's move on good

18:10coming up wow Angie uncovers the story behind a powerful image and a missing family member oh that
18:19really broke me you have to let go of that and Rita's confronted with a major home truth this is
18:26tough I
18:31know at the renovation the new heating and cooling system is being installed in the roof space with
18:38extensive ductwork connecting enlarged vents for better airflow throughout the house while Sheree is
18:45dealing with an issue in yes eggs bedroom this used to be an old kids room and they were playing
18:50basketball in the room hence all the holes throughout the room yep we'll patch that all up for you all
18:56right great thank you fixing this room's damaged plaster isn't hard but we've already got our hands
19:03full dealing with old air vents and light fittings we're having to relocate by filling in several ceiling
19:10holes across the house so to make sure we don't fall behind schedule we're gonna have to use heat guns
19:18to try and dry all the joint compound in time for painting Sheree also has to tackle Rita's bland
19:26bedroom this room doesn't really suit Rita's lively personality so to give it more character and
19:32sophistication I'm putting up scallop wall panels looks good huh yeah it does look good it's bendy too
19:39it's so you can put it on straight walls I can bend it around curves and get really creative with
19:43it
19:52as new lights are installed to brighten up the gray feature wall Sheree heads out to order a special
19:59surprise for Rita I have a homeowner who has a medical injury she spends quite a lot of time in

20:06is this adjustable at all it is would you like me to show you yes please yeah with a touch

20:11button you'll see that the head will start raising and so will the fleet that's really great
20:21upstairs at the warehouse Angie's hoping to learn more about the treasures she found in Rita's cluttered
20:28home you're looking at my daddy's backgammon board how old we talking oh at least 30 before dad passed
20:37away when I was pregnant with Tanya we lived at mum and dad's and that was a really hot summer

20:43work shift work so when he'd wake up we'd sit outside on the patio and dad would get me bucket
20:48of cold
20:49water for the feet because pregnant feet get really big so I'd sit there with swollen feet in a bucket

20:55water played back Gavin all afternoon oh that's the perfect summer game and what a good memory to
21:00have oh yeah with your dad I love that this was his I do feel like it's definitely seen better

21:26Wow so we had a second born Noah and at the time there was an add-on TV with a
21:34line and we're
21:35watching TV and I've always goes mama look it's Noah because you have this mane of hair I have some
21:42photos yeah yeah this is Noah this is Noah okay he was diagnosed with a condition called hydrant
21:48encephalic and not a long life expectancy and we had him for 18 months so we had an angel and
21:58then
21:58we'll study for a little while and he went back to his makeup I love the way that you've said
22:04that
22:04that's such a beautiful way to look at it how did the kids handle that my eldest son Tanya didn't
22:12cope
22:12well no of course so Tanya was four and a half when Noel passed away it's old enough to understand
22:18oh yeah bring him back yeah they can't take my brother away mama bring him back oh I said Bubba
22:26they can't bring him back he said but this is where he lives mum you can't take him away oh
22:31that broke
22:33me that really broke me that is a lot to go through that was tough yeah so we've established that
22:40Noah is
22:41your lion mm-hmm what about the other children what are they the boys my tigers just because
22:48they're so protective yes of course makes sense yeah and she's pussycat I didn't even realize that
22:55they all could be it's a feline thing yeah what a beautiful analogy the love between this family is
23:03obvious and while the lion picture should take pride of place in the new front room of their home
23:09I'm going to create something truly special that'll bring the other cats together as well
23:16Rita I've been really giving a huge amount of thought to you the clutter your injury and your loss
23:25Peter and yes egg are now helping Rita deal with her medical aids and her late mum's old clothes
23:32are each of these a different stage of you getting better yes okay so can you now let any of

23:38I have to keep the walker okay the walker stays the boot the boot stays and that okay so the
23:45crutches
23:45will go go don't need those so I want to show you a few connections step back behind this table

24:01room mm-hmm there were two bags of your mum's clothing that you couldn't even bear to look at yep
24:13this is tough I know mm-hmm just start I want to show you something here okay okay you've called

24:20to help you deal with all of this clutter yep however what you're focused on very much
24:29is the physical stuff there's something else going on here for you there's a whole lot of mental stuff
24:36physical and mental clutter is caused largely by two things injury and loss guess who's taken a
24:46huge whammy me in the last 18 months in both me and you lost part of yourself in all of
24:55this
24:59tell me what you lost yeah that mobility and strength sense of purpose what are you most worried about at
25:08the moment recovery getting back to pre-injury
25:21I don't like you
25:25you have to accept the fact that part of the clutter that you're dealing with
25:30maybe that you're expecting to be way back where you were 18 months ago absolutely you have to let
25:39go of that okay do you love this woman absolutely unconditionally absolutely do you love her any
25:50differently with her being in this state than you did 18 months ago before the injury love doesn't change
25:56no so what I don't want you to do is to put all of this mental clutter on you and
26:02just accept
26:03who you are now you are enough
26:09say it I am enough I am enough and I'm not saying you shouldn't try to be completely rehabilitated
26:17absolutely not but I'm saying don't set yourself an impossible standard because if you do
26:26that's clutter yeah clutter is anything that gets between you and the life you want to live
26:34okay now I want to come back to this okay if your mother was standing here what would she say
26:41to you
26:42right now get rid of it donate it are there garments here that bring back a strong memory of her
26:49no I
26:51know mum would say just donate okay so these will go up to donation great job let's go we've got
26:58lots
26:59more to do excellent coming up doesn't fit the reno hits a snag top fits bottom doesn't as Rita
27:07unleashes a surprise on the whole family do you know who this woman is not not who replaced our
27:13mom at Rita and yes eggs house pressures mounting to get everything done in time and although it's
27:25fortunate the ceiling hole repairs in the front room have finally dried enough to paint there's a new
27:31problem installing cabinets into the wall alcove doesn't fit doesn't fit top fits bottom doesn't
27:38is that because the walls bowed yes I really need a fast practical solution as there was hardly any
27:45storage in this room and I want to fix that so Avor and Alina can keep it neat and tidy
27:53so we're cutting into the bowed section of the wall to prise off enough space to squeeze the cabinets
28:01into the recess and then we'll be able to patch and paint over the visible damage and to add some
28:08color that'll make this young adult retreat a place to relax and chill I've chosen to paint the
28:13walls are calming green and the cabinetry a tranquil blue I also want to add a modern rug that'll
28:20complement the polished wood floors warm tones and help define the movie watching zone for when
28:26Avor and Alina have friends over that's nice all right
28:38back at the warehouse Angie's working on her treasure projects for Rita and the family
28:45this vintage backgammon set holds beautiful memories for Rita of playing with her dad
28:50but it's in desperate need of restoration so I'm sanding it back then adding new timber veneer strips
29:00of light silver ash and dark walnut I'm super careful to cut precisely so the checkerboard is perfectly
29:08uniform then I apply glue so it'll stick to the box and once set I'll give it a coat of
29:14furniture oil so
29:15it'll look as good as new next I want to create a tribute to Rita and Yezeg's child Noah who
29:22passed
29:22way too soon and represent all of the kids in the front of their home so I'm taking inspiration from
29:30Noah's striking line image to make a unique set of decoupage tea lights I cover a glass vase with glue
29:38to
29:39add texture with pressed leaves some thin brown paper to give the candlelight a soft warm glow and a
29:46feline for each of the family's little cups so all of this is the linen that came out of your
29:56home which
29:57is kind of amazing yeah it's insane it's actually insane as the do-it-all mum Rita looked after this
30:04massive amount of linen on her own but now her injury has made that difficult I want to see if
30:10she can embrace who she is now and accept help of all this one do you want to keep these
30:16these who
30:16are yours oh no that one can go okay good my sheets good stay stay these are Alina's all all
30:23of these
30:23yeah Alina's all white okay keep these all of these stay yeah from the start Rita happily lets both Alina
30:31and Avor take charge over their own sheets they're all old I'm not gonna use that this go yeah yeah

30:39but importantly the whole family cooperates no it's old no it's old no it's old throw throw keep
30:47throw throw throw keep keep with the Rita who did everything without help now gone throw keep these are
30:56keeps all of these you sure yeah but this is a huge breakthrough chuck chuck chuck chuck chuck these
31:02ones good ugly okay good great job when we started one two three tables polled high with bedding and
31:12linen we're now down to just one table plus plus a couple of duvets and five huge boxes off to
31:18donation what are you thinking I love it that was so good what shifted for you what's changed it's time
31:26to move forward do you know who this woman is what's going on do you think I don't know but

31:36think she's completely changed Alina how do you see your mum shifted I think seeing mum be like so
31:43in control of everything over the last couple of years and seeing other people just like help her
31:49instead of her having to help everyone else and knowing that she's actually allowing it to happen
31:54so it's very new but it's really nice to see it happen it's good to have change isn't it yeah

32:00it's the year of change I know it's been 18 months two years of horror yeah and pain and loss
32:06but it
32:07really does feel like yes the tides turn okay you've done a great job I'll get the guys to send
32:14all of
32:14this off to donation we'll make sure this goes back in the house and then we'll be back into it
32:18get out of
32:18here good job coming up while the family enjoys success oh my god disaster strikes for Sheree right
32:30at the 11th hour too at Rita and Yazeg's house the rubbish truck arrives to clear the front yard
32:41while inside also needs a big clean when you're renovating dust and debris gets into every nook
32:50and cranny but as our cleaners are also trained support workers I'm going to organize extra help
32:56around the house for Rita while she recovers from her leg injury as the painters race to finish new
33:10blinds get installed and wallpaper is put up while the ducted heating and cooling is ready to go
33:19well so we've got seven zones you've got kitchen family Rita's room over room Yazeg's room and all
33:25they do is if they want heating or cooling in that room they just press that one button on or
33:28off correct
33:29oh that's so cool outside last-minute deliveries arrive with new furniture to be rapidly assembled and
33:38put into place but it's the family's decision to keep their existing sofa which has just returned from
33:47the warehouse that's causing a major headache by closing up the entry to the front room with a new
33:58wall and door to give the young adults the privacy their vast fall we've now created an obstacle to
34:03getting this extra large sofa back into the room this is really bad the reveals only hours away and
34:18having no sofa to sit on in front of the TV would be an absolute disaster right at the 11th
34:25hour to
34:25here meanwhile Rita and her family are working together to reduce the rest of the clutter from CDs
34:36and DVDs to books go and kitchenware oh ruthless eldest son Tunyal has come for his things
34:47comfy yep and to join in with the others helping Rita cull her massive bag collection donate
34:56donate donate donate I know we all expected mom to have a hard time you know doing all of this
35:02donate I think she's actually done really well donate she's like Wonder Woman donate
35:08don't I persevering through everything getting through it all donate donate from where we started to where
35:14we are now it's huge difference don't I got rid of so much stuff which is like great to see
35:21finally it's time for the results of the huge effort on the count of three I want you to open

35:27and check out the amount of stuff you have decided to keep one two three open your eyes
35:34oh that's nothing is that all that's left that's it remember I suggested it would be great if you
35:45could let go of 70 percent well you started at 125 boxes you're down to 26 boxes which is a
35:53reduction
35:53of 79 percent well done incredible huge job go on and that's not all is it no that's only the
36:05beginning
36:06this is very very impressive but I want you to see what we're looking at behind you on the count
36:12of
36:12three one two three turn around we're looking at hundreds of books 500 items of clothing beautiful
36:31homewares and furniture you are donating this on and it is going to be the cash equivalent of get ready
36:4110 000 so well done very generous it's beyond generosity donating that much to people in need
36:51is best part of all this and it's like this clouds opened and the sunny shining feels really good
37:02all the donated items are off to a local charity shop as the things being kept are on their way

37:09to the house pivot pivot pivot where the reno team's stress levels are rising as they struggle to get
37:21the sofa through the front room doorway you're going to rip out half that wall it's not going to go

37:25and Cherie is forced to come up with a plan B all right I've got an idea to take window

37:33outside unfortunately the windows in this place just don't open enough to get this enormous sofa
37:39through be careful it's got really thin glass makes me a bit nervous so removing a pane of glass is

37:46only option hallelujah and while we've cleared the first turtle all right will it fit I'm not sure it's now
37:58it's our time for the moment of truth careful got the light behind this hole

38:21outside the family's belongings arrive so Angie and Peter can find the best place for each item
