02:27We're doing the second round of the choir session today.
02:32We have 30 singers, I believe.
02:35So we'll be doing six tracks.
02:37And we'll be doing a lot of the themes, including the Halo choir.
02:46I used a piano motif that's using Halo 3, and I rearranged based on that.
02:54I'll be doing a bit more.
03:05Can we change the crescendo?
03:07Yes.
03:08Not here, but in these four bars.
03:11Yes.
03:11Okay.
03:12How long should it be for two bars?
03:16Yeah, two bars, yeah.
03:17Two-tact-crescendo, 11, 12, crescendo, mezzo forte,
03:2113.
03:22Takt-do forte.
03:26Posare per cincu.
04:11Il nostro corso gratuito è 11.30 e abbiamo un volto a 7 o'clock domani e arriviamo in Londra
04:18e abbiamo una sessione a 10.30 domani.
04:22So, hopefully I get there in time.
04:35It's really interesting to see how game music has evolved.
04:40You know, when I first started out, a friend of mine was working for games and he's literally, you know,
04:44he had like 128k worth of memory he was allowed to use because there was just no memory.
04:49And now, look at us, we're in Abbey Road Studio One with the full symphony orchestra.
04:58I've worked on, well, I think I'm up to my 137th film as we speak, just about to do my
05:05138th.
05:06So, yeah, I've worked on a lot of movies.
05:10I think the difference really in video game score is, I mean, for a start, there's an awful lot more
05:15music.
05:15You tend to have like very, you know, big, long, dramatic themes.
05:21Whereas in a film, maybe you have one or two of those, you know, you have like an end titles
05:24and your opening titles and maybe one big action scene.
05:27But we've done five of them, you know, so it's everything is kind of bigger and longer.
05:32And, you know, so much of gameplay is action.
05:34So you have, you might have like 20 action scenes or 30 action scenes.
05:38And then you have all the, like the play out movies, which have like these big dramatic things.
05:42I mean, gorgeous cello solos and fantastic dynamic stuff.
05:46And tonight we put the brass on as well.
05:53It's just a great sounding room, you know, it's, listen, it's just, it's amazing.
05:58And, you know, this, this was the, the, the template for pretty much all recording studios, you know, a lot
06:02of the scoring stages in Los Angeles were based on, on Abbey Road Studio One, which is where we're sitting
06:08now.
06:09Studio Two, just over there where all the Beatles did all their stuff, you know, so it's, yeah, it's a
06:13real historic building.
06:14But, you know, what I love about it is it's not, it's not a time capsule, you know, it's working
06:19every day.
06:19Plus it's got, you know, world-class facilities and world-class engineers and assistants.
06:24Yeah, it's, it's a nice office, you know.
06:31Kazuma did a lovely arrangement of the, the original Halo theme, but it's, he's changed the chords and, and, and
06:37it's very clever.
06:45I think it's nice that every composer who comes to it pays homage to it in some way and quotes
06:50the theme, you know, it's kind of like the James Bond theme, if you like, in movies, you know, if
06:54you score a James Bond movie at one time or other, you always put the theme in and, and it's
06:58funny enough, after this, I'm going to work on Mission Impossible Five.
07:01And again, you know, you quote the Lalo Schifrin theme because you pay homage and continue the legacy, you know.
07:18So this is our fourth trip to record at Abbey Road Studios.
07:22Over three days, we'll record percussion, piano, strings and brass.
07:26This is Nobuko, our, uh, orchestrator, score producer, and this is Tan, uh, our music copyist.
07:35We actually went to the same college.
07:37We all graduated from Berklee College of Music.
07:40We three started working together during Halo 4, uh, well on the 7Q, uh, at 20th Century Fox, um, my
07:50first orchestra recording experience.
07:54This is what I, what I look at when I compose.
07:58So what I do is a orchestra mock-up using synthesizers and pianos, like, orchestra samples.
08:06Here on the score, this is what she did.
08:10She basically transcribed what I did by listening to it, and then she added dynamics and then phrase marking.
08:17All instruments.
08:19Yeah, she, she does that for all of the instruments.
08:22She's in Tokyo, so we are a very remote team.
08:26In the end, we do have, uh, almost, uh, 90-piece orchestra in the end.
08:32And then once, once we have a final score ready, then the other part is to do a part extraction.
08:38There's a lot of detail involved.
08:40Even the, even the taping for the score, right?
08:43If you see the backside, you can see that all the pages are found here, which makes the page turn
08:49really easy.
08:51So organized.
08:55We have Master Chief back in Halo 5.
08:58So I was reading this story leading up to Halo 5 about Master Chief and Blue Team, and I thought
09:07that was a perfect place to bring the 117 motif in a different arrangement, working title as Blue Team.

10:28Again, on the violins, I'm going to try to bring the slur over this eighth note so that it has
10:32a smoother connection.
10:36And also, the top C from the main strings gets really quiet against those F sharps.
10:43Okay, just a couple of little things.
10:45We need, we need another one anyway.
10:46Just a little more legato at the end of 77 into 78.
10:50Apart from that, that was really good.
10:51As well, I'm the one and I know that was really good.
10:59I that was really good.
11:00I love it.
11:04I love it.
11:20But when I was tuning in the first 20th century,
11:34Grazie a tutti.
12:02Grazie a tutti.
12:32Grazie a tutti.
13:00Grazie a tutti.
13:42Grazie a tutti.
13:55Grazie a tutti.
13:57Grazie a tutti.
14:0312, 12, 16, 16, 16, yeah.
14:10It's overkill, but...
