00:00You know, scientists make discoveries that change the world, but even they can face mysteries.
00:06Here are 10 things that have baffled scientists.
00:10Imagine that you constantly hear a low-frequency hum, and no one can trace its source.
00:16Roughly 4% of the world's population hears the hum.
00:21It's a geography-free sound.
00:23I mean, people all around the world hear it.
00:25So the name varies from Tao's hum to Auckland hum, depending on the region where it gets generated.
00:32The sound is just on the threshold of human hearing.
00:35People hear it less when they're outside, and it gets louder indoors, especially at night.
00:41What's even scarier is that you cannot unhear it once you've heard it.
00:45Some folks say it started in London, around the time of Charles Dickens, who wrote A Christmas Carol,
00:50and the low-frequency sound actually comes from the humbug.
00:54Or not.
00:56Actually, the earliest cases were recorded in Bristol, UK, dating back to the mid-1970s.
01:02Scientists have various theories about where the hum comes from, and why only some people can hear it.
01:08Yet they don't have a clear answer.
01:10It could occur when ocean waves move along the ocean floor.
01:14They shake the Earth when they collide with continental shells.
01:17Or this might be happening because of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
01:21Oh, and how about ultra-low-frequency radio signals used to communicate with submarines or even 5G?
01:29Hmm.
01:31Upsweep is another type of unidentified sound.
01:34It was discovered in 1991 in the Pacific Ocean.
01:38The sound is high enough to be recorded throughout the ocean.
01:41Scientists theorize that the sound could be related to underwater volcanic activity.
01:47Interestingly, the volume of the sound has been diminishing compared to its volume when it was first discovered.
01:53Yet it still can be detected.
01:56Plus, it's seasonal.
01:57It reaches its highest volume in spring and fall.
02:00Is it related to seasonal changes?
02:02No one really knows for sure.
02:04The next mysterious thing is a cone-shaped monument found in the Sea of Galilee in Israel.
02:11This monument was discovered accidentally by sonar scanning in 2003.
02:16But the findings were published only in 2013.
02:20The monument weighs 60,000 tons.
02:23It was once submerged by rising waters.
02:26Archaeologists say the monument is enigmatic because they can't figure out where it's from.
02:30They don't know what it's connected to or its function.
02:34So this big and unusual thing remains a mystery.
02:38Now, let's move to Gobekli Tepe, Turkey.
02:42This place offers you one of the most archaeologically significant sites in the world.
02:46Why is it important?
02:48Well, it has massive carved stones about 11,000 years old.
02:52To put it in perspective, they're 6,000 years older than Stonehenge.
02:57Ancient people placed these stones before they began farming or crafting metal tools or pottery.
03:03So the existence of this place goes against the chronology of civilization we're familiar with,
03:08where people farmed first and built second.
03:11Apparently, it wasn't like that.
03:14In any case, a good question is, what was the purpose of this site?
03:18Was it built to worship some spirits?
03:20Yep, archaeologists believe it might be the world's oldest temple.
03:25Okay, say this with me.
03:28Paleodictyon noticeum.
03:30Yeah, I know, it sounds like a chemical formula.
03:32This is a living fossil found deep down on the ocean floor.
03:36A creature makes these hexagonal burrows, that for sure.
03:40Yet scientists can't identify the artists.
03:43Now, what do I mean by living fossil?
03:45Well, Paleodictyon noticeum is a creature believed to produce a burrow,
03:50nearly identical to Paleodictyon fossils.
03:53Is it a worm-like animal that made them?
03:57Scientists don't know.
03:58One thing is clear.
03:59This isn't some random stuff created by geological forces.
04:04Now, speaking of fossils, take a look at this giant one.
04:08Its informal name is Godzillus.
04:10It was discovered in 2011 by an amateur paleontologist.
04:14This is a scientist who studies the history of life on Earth by analyzing fossil records.
04:20Anyway, back to Godzillus.
04:22It's almost 7 feet in length and 9 feet tall if you were to measure it upright.
04:27This fossil is 450 million years old, coming from the time when Cincinnati was underwater.
04:33It might be a fossilized algae mat, but some scientists have different opinions.
04:40This is a massive tunnel found in South America.
04:43The tunnel is at least 8,000 to 10,000 years old.
04:47At first, researchers discovered a couple of colossal burrows.
04:51They were enormous and neatly constructed.
04:54Geologists were amazed, saying they had never seen such structures before.
04:59There's no known geologic process to explain their formation.
05:02I mean, researchers have known about the burrows since the 1930s, but back then, they believed
05:08that these tunnels were just some sort of archaeological construction, until they discovered huge claw
05:14marks on the walls and ceiling.
05:16They reasoned that some extinct species could be the ones to have left these marks.
05:21Many geologists strongly believe they found the burrows of giant ground sloths and armadillos.
05:27The structure is the largest known burrow from the Paleolithic age in the Amazon.
05:32Yet experts have many questions.
05:34How come such a deliberate-looking structure could form naturally?
05:38A researcher then discovered another strained cave.
05:42This one was hundreds of miles away from the massive tunnel.
05:45Fast forward, there are now more than 1,500 burrows from the Paleolithic age found in Brazil.
05:52Well, what's even more interesting is that some of these caves are connected to tunnels that sometimes lead to chambers.
06:00I'll continue with a natural phenomenon.
06:03What if I told you that every year, especially in October, fireballs appear on the Mekong River in Thailand?
06:10According to legends, Naga fireballs are a call for Buddha to return to Earth.
06:15And river servants are the ones making these calls.
06:18Well, that's a myth.
06:20But what does science say about it?
06:22Is it related to a flammable gas?
06:25There are no clear answers yet.
06:27These fireballs appear to rise from the water.
06:30They can go as high as almost 990 feet.
06:33They're like fireworks, disappearing rapidly.
06:36They typically glow with a reddish or orange color.
06:39I'll mention some legends, too.
06:41Because why not?
06:42They're thrilling.
06:43And it would be a shame not to include the one about the lost city of Atlantis.
06:48As you may know, the legend says that Atlantis submerged into the ocean around 11,000 years ago.
06:55Since then, not just scientists, but also treasure hunters and philosophers have been searching for the lost world.
07:01Could Bimini Road be a trace?
07:04In 1968, a diver found strange stones off the coast of North Bimini Island in the Bahamas.
07:10The stones look human-made.
07:13It's like they were evenly spaced out and laid in an orderly row.
07:17It baffled scientists, but not for long.
07:20Carbon dating analysis of the blocks revealed that geological forces created the road naturally.
07:27There weren't any tool marks or signs indicating that the blocks had been stacked or something.
07:32The research is continuing.
07:33But yeah, scientists generally believe that the rocks were created by erosion.
07:38Well, I guess the time of Atlantis hasn't come yet.
07:43Okay, picture this.
07:44You're wandering on the beach, and you see dozens of octopuses walking past.
07:49In 2017, a group of people from Wales witnessed exactly this.
07:54Why did these creatures come out of the ocean?
07:57No one knows the answer.
07:58The group reported that they had seen 20 to 30 octopi crawling on the sand.
08:03The people looked for some signs of injury, but found nothing.
08:06They said that they had carried the animals back to the ocean.
08:10Interestingly, these creatures kept crawling onto the shore when people were asleep.
08:15Experts say that it's hard to be sure of the reason that pushed the animals to the beach without conducting
08:20a physical examination.
08:22They're still speculating about the reason behind this unusual and rare occurrence.
08:27Could it be overcrowding?
08:29Furthermore, the octopi were well-armed.
08:32A separate study points out that the more fishers hunt large animals that feed on octopuses, the more the octopus
08:40population grows.
08:41Maybe that's why these creatures have to go farther to find food or shelter.
08:45But without proper research, these are only theories.
08:50There's a lot we don't know about space, too.
08:52So here's a bonus fact about the yellowish source of life in the solar system.
08:57Scientists have discovered a new type of wave inside the sun.
09:01These waves move in the opposite direction to the sun's rotation.
09:05Plus, they move super fast.
09:08So fast that it's beyond our understanding.
09:11Researchers have different theories about the function of the waves.
09:14If they figure out their role, this could give them additional insight into the processes happening inside the sun.
09:21And yes, the octopi were well-armed.
09:27Welcome to the Hall of Monsters.
09:29I see you are wearing your protective gear.
09:32That's good, because during your visit here, your safety is not guaranteed.
09:36So, every step you take, beware.
09:39For the monsters you'll see ahead are the scariest ones from Japanese folktales.
09:44If they don't haunt you during your visit, they sure will haunt your dreams.
09:49And let me tell you, no anime you have watched could have prepared you for this.
09:55I already see doubt and fear in your eyes.
09:58So let's begin our tour before you lose that little flicker of courage left within you.
10:04There's no better monster to greet you than the Noparabo.
10:07You might not notice it, but it is happy to have new victims.
10:11I mean visitors.
10:13Noparabo looks like an ordinary human being in almost every way.
10:16That is why it can blend in seamlessly with human society.
10:19But things will quickly get uncanny once you meet face to face with it.
10:23You see, it has no face at all.
10:25Its head is like a blank orb.
10:27But here's the thing.
10:29Noparabo is quite harmless.
10:30It only frightens people.
10:32That's it.
10:33In legends and stories, it usually does that by impersonating someone familiar to its potential victims.
10:38And once it has their attention, it causes its features to disappear.
10:41Almost as if erasing a pencil drawing.
10:44What is left is a blank smooth sheet of skin with no eyes, nose, or mouth.
10:47So, as you might have imagined, its true identity and what it really looks like is unknown.
10:53One of the stories in which Noparabo appears is about a lazy fisherman.
10:57Despite his wife's warnings, he goes fishing from a sacred imperial koi pond.
11:02On his way there, he meets another fisherman who also warns him not to go there.
11:06Still, he ignores him.
11:09Once he arrives at the pond, a beautiful young woman begs him not to fish there.
11:13But he doesn't listen to her either.
11:15That is when she wipes off her face.
11:17When the fisherman runs home to hide with fear, his wife confronts him and criticizes him for his wrongdoing.
11:23Plot twist?
11:25Only to wipe her face as well.
11:28Speaking of fish and ponds, let's move on to Cup Faw.
11:31Don't fall for their rather funny and mascot-like appearance.
11:35Cup Faw is a dangerous monster you wouldn't want to cross paths with.
11:38These creatures, which are often depicted as humanoid turtles, live in and around water bodies such as lakes, ponds, or
11:45rivers.
11:46Cup Faw's are generally the size of a human child, yet they are physically stronger than a grown man.
11:51Their skin color can vary from different shades of green to bright red and even blue.
11:56In addition, they can either be slimy or covered in scales.
12:00As unique as each Cup Faw can be, they all have a turtle shell on their back and a mouth
12:05resembling a beak.
12:07Their arms and legs are webbed between the toes and fingers.
12:10But the most characteristic part of their appearance is the bowl-like objects that lie on top of their skulls.
12:16This is considered to be the source of Cup Faw's power and life force, and must be kept filled with
12:21water at all times.
12:23If this water spills or the bowl is damaged in any way, a Cup Faw can become incredibly weakened and
12:28will be unable to move.
12:30Cup Faw's are known to cause mischief.
12:33Although they can befriend humans, you should always approach one with caution.
12:37Because they might try to lure you into the water to feed on you.
12:40However, there's also a chance they might challenge you to a sumo wrestling match.
12:44Just know that they are really good at it before accepting this challenge.
12:48Yet again, if you do find yourself in a match, here's a pro tip.
12:52Find a way to trick the Cup Faw into bowing so low that the water in its dish spills out.
12:57And hey, if you refill that water later, you can bring the creature under your command.
13:03Take a look at this lady here.
13:04She seems to be sleeping peacefully, right?
13:07Well, look again.
13:09There's something strange going on with her neck.
13:13Rokurokubi might appear as an ordinary woman by day, but when it's nighttime and her body is asleep,
13:18her neck stretches to incredible lengths and roams around freely.
13:23Although Rokurokubi is no less creepy than the other creatures, there is something that makes her different.
13:29It is that, unlike others, she is actually not born as a monster.
13:34She used to be a human being just like us.
13:37But she was transformed by a curse resulting from some evil action or misdeed.
13:42But the story gets sadder.
13:44Because the mentioned misdeed doesn't necessarily have to be her own doing.
13:49In many cases, it is either Rokurokubi's husband or father who actually committed evil actions.
13:55But she's the one paying the price because the curse only affects women.
13:59If you think Rokurokubi cannot be that harmful or scary with that heartbreaking backstory, then you're right.
14:05Her head might attack small animals sometimes, or she might cause mischief by scaring nearby people.
14:11But that's mostly it.
14:12What she loves to do in her night travels, however, is to lick up lamp oil with her long tongue.
14:18Well, who are we to judge someone's favorite food?
14:22Nukukubi is Rokurokubi's much scarier sister.
14:25She is like an advanced version of her.
14:27Sort of like an upgraded Pokemon.
14:30While Rokurokubi's head is always attached to her body,
14:33Nukukubi's head can come off from the neck and float around far and away from her body.
14:37The worst part is, though, she can get bloodthirsty sometimes.
14:40And that's when her detached head will start preying on humans to quench that thirst.
14:45However, she is not invincible.
14:47It is believed that if her body moves by any chance while it is sleeping,
14:50and her head is still floating around as that happens,
14:53then her head cannot return back to the body.
14:56Hope that comforts you a bit.
14:58You see a roll of cotton.
15:00I see a life-threatening monster.
15:03According to Japanese folktales, especially the myth of Tsukumogami inanimate objects receive a soul.
15:09Therefore, become alive and self-aware after serving their owners for a hundred years.
15:14Although they are usually harmless, they might tend to play small pranks on people.
15:18Yet again, they still have the capacity to get angry and vengeful.
15:23Especially if there are people who threw them away or didn't treat them well.
15:27They might group up to take revenge.
15:30Ittan Momen is one of those object monsters.
15:33These possessed long and narrow sheets of cloth, which were used to make clothes,
15:37can be seen flying through the night sky.
15:40They are often malicious and attack people by wrapping their bodies around a person's face and neck,
15:45strangling or smothering them.
15:47In some tales, it is said that wrapped cloths would spin around and around
15:50and quickly come flying to wrap themselves around people and take them away to the skies.
15:55Joker's laughter is going to sound like music to your ears once you hear this lady's
16:00Waruhionnu is a female-looking monster that lives in the mountains, but
16:03despite her non-threatening appearance,
16:06meeting one will actually put you in a really dangerous position.
16:09She will smile and start laughing at you.
16:12And once she does, you'll realize that her laughter is somewhat toxic and infectious.
16:17It will cause you to start laughing along, too.
16:20But even if she leaves, you will continue laughing after her until you are out of breath
16:25and unable to stand.
16:27Even if you were strong enough to resist laughing along with her, you would still not be safe.
16:32You see, merely hearing her laughter, no matter how far away she cackles,
16:36is enough to put you in a stupor.
16:38You'll be haunted by that annoying and ear-piercing sound wherever you go,
16:42for the rest of your life.
16:44However, it's not like anybody who travels through the mountains will meet her.
16:49There is one way to avoid this laughing curse altogether.
16:52You see, she appears to people only on the first, ninth, and seventeenth day of each month.
16:57So, plan your travels accordingly.
17:01In 1945, five TBF Avenger aircraft took flight for a routine training exercise around the Bermuda Triangle.
17:10In the middle of the exercise, the planes were struck by intense rain and heavy winds,
17:16despite the clear weather forecast.
17:18The pilots became extremely disoriented and radioed the base to report that their navigational equipment
17:24had stopped working.
17:25The last thing the base heard was,
17:28when the first plane drops below 10 gallons, we'll all go down together.
17:32And then, static.
17:34The five planes and their 14 crew members were never seen or heard from again.
17:41On his very first voyage to the New World in 1492,
17:45Christopher Columbus sailed through the Bermuda Triangle.
17:48Columbus reported that, one night, when he was on the deck of the ship,
17:52he noticed a giant light appear in the distance, unlike anything he had ever seen before.
17:58Columbus looked at his compass for direction, and it gave off erratic readings.
18:02You might have noticed that the Bermuda Triangle doesn't appear on any world map.
18:07This is because official institutions refuse to acknowledge that the area actually exists.
18:14A popular theory suggests that rogue waves are responsible for the many disappearances.
18:20Rogue waves are called extreme storm waves by scientists.
18:23They occur when different weather patterns take place at the same time and cause large, unexpected waves.
18:30Witnesses say that the waves look like giant walls of water.
18:34These waves could explain why ships go down fast and without leaving any trace.
18:40The Bermuda Triangle is home to some pretty intense and unexpected weather.
18:44Storms build up quickly and unexpectedly, then disappear soon after.
18:49If you blink, you might miss it.
18:51This could explain why few distress signals are issued.
18:55Pilots and sailors never saw the weather coming.
18:58No one knows exactly how many ships and planes have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
19:04The rough estimate is 50 ships and 20 planes.
19:07Most of the time, the disappearances had no explanation and no wreckage has ever been left behind.
19:14Another bizarre theory trying to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery comes from Charlie Berlitz.
19:20He insists that the area is home to the lost city of Atlantis.
19:24The missing ships and planes and malfunctioning equipment, according to him, were all caused by rays of energy let out
19:32by the special energy crystals that power Atlantis.
19:35While this sounds silly, Berlitz's theory was convincing enough that over 20 million people bought his book worldwide.
19:43In the year 1800, a large sailing vessel called the USS Pickering departed from the U.S. on its way
19:50to the West Indies.
19:51The ship sailed into the Bermuda Triangle along with its 90-man crew and was never heard from again.
19:58The USS Pickering was the first ever confirmed ship to vanish in the Bermuda Triangle.
20:03It's believed that the ship was taken out by a storm, but because no wreckage was ever found, we'll never
20:09know for sure.
20:11When the TBF Avenger planes went missing, a massive search operation was conducted.
20:17Boats and planes searched the Bermuda Triangle for any signs of the aircraft.
20:21One of the boats searching was a PBM-5 Mariner airboat.
20:25The airboat took flight at 7.27 p.m. and called in a routine radio message three minutes later.
20:32Then, it was never heard from again.
20:34No trace was ever found of the rescue airboat or the five Avenger aircraft.
20:40An enormous investigation was launched into the disappearance of all these vehicles, but nothing was ever discovered.
20:47This particular area of the ocean is one of the most heavily traveled shipping routes in the world.
20:52Some skeptics believe that this fact solves the mystery.
20:56Statistically, the busier the area, the higher the frequency of accidents and disappearances.
21:01While this makes sense, it's not the frequency of disappearances that's responsible for the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.
21:08It's the lack of explanation or wreckage found.
21:12On the ocean floor, decomposing organisms let off large concentrations of methane gas that gets trapped under the water.
21:20This gas can build up until, boom, it ruptures.
21:24The gas surges up to the surface and erupts.
21:27If a ship was in the area of one of these ruptures, the water would become much less dense and
21:32cause the ship to sink rapidly and without warning.
21:36Scientists believe this could be the cause of the many disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
21:41While this theory makes a lot of sense, it doesn't seem too likely.
21:44The U.S. Geological Survey has stated that no large releases of gas are believed to have occurred in this
21:52area for the past 15,000 years.
21:55The ocean floor is made of rocks containing a lot of magnetite.
21:59It's more like iron.
22:01Magnetic fields react to high concentrations of magnetite on the ocean floor, which may start a sort of conflict between
22:09the two.
22:09It can often lead to various weather anomalies and, as a result, navigation issues.
22:14And, naturally, any changes in the ocean floor or the Earth's magnetic fields influence the Bermuda Triangle a lot.
22:23Since the magnetic field is constantly moving, it might be also taking the Bermuda Triangle with it.
22:30Now that people know where the triangle is, it's easy to avoid it.
22:34It supposedly moves eastward together with the magnetic poles.
22:38But scientists still can't answer where exactly it will be in a couple of years.
22:42Some people blame all the disasters on the extraterrestrial paranormal activity.
22:48Others suppose it's all about raging natural phenomena.
22:53There's another triangle in Lake Michigan.
22:55Just like the one near Bermuda, the Michigan Triangle got its shady reputation for some disappearances.
23:02The first recorded one dates back to 1679.
23:05A large vessel, one of the largest of that time, set out on an expedition.
23:10Yet, once it got in the Sinister Triangle, it never came back.
23:15Much later, an aircraft disappeared in this triangle.
23:19The skies are usually very clear there.
23:21But back in 1883, some people witnessed abnormal things in the area.
23:26Some claim to have seen large blocks of ice falling from the skies.
23:30And the crew even managed to save one as hard proof.
23:34Meanwhile, the Pacific Ocean Mystery Area is another Sinister Triangle.
23:39Off the south coast of Japan, not far away from Tokyo, there's a sea where plenty of ships met their
23:45doom, disappearing without a trace in these waters.
23:49They call it the Devil's Triangle.
23:52Some scientists believe the cause of anomalies is the environmental changes.
23:56Also, there's a really high concentration of methane hydrates on the bottom of the ocean in the Pacific Triangle area.
24:04You're deviating from your original course and sailing in the wrong direction.
24:09There's the Caribbean Sea near the Triangle, peppered with small islands.
24:13The seafloor here isn't deep.
24:15The ship can get in shallow waters.
24:17And now the ship is stuck on a shoal, and you have no idea where you are.
24:22If this were the 21st century, the ship's captain would be able to reach the shore using GPS and other
24:29modern navigation.
24:30But the most interesting thing is that the compass would work correctly this time,
24:35since the magnetic north pole hasn't already coincided with the true one for a long time in the territory of
24:42the Bermuda Triangle.
24:43The Agonic Line is somewhere far away from here.
24:46There are no problems with navigation now.
24:49But for some reason, this is where ships disappear.
24:53In fact, not just here.
24:55Throughout the Atlantic Ocean, there are places where many more ships were gone.
24:59The Bermuda Triangle is not even in the top 10 of such places.
25:03One of the main reasons why many ships are lost here
25:06is that one of the most popular shipping routes in the Atlantic passes through the Bermuda Triangle.
25:11And the more ships in one place, the more shipwrecks.
25:15Simple probability.
25:17Then, it just starts getting weird.
25:20Other theories say that there's a space-time rift in this region.
25:23Ships and planes fall into this rift and end up in the past or the future.
25:28But for some reason, there's not a single proof of this myth.
25:31There's no reason to think that the rift is hidden somewhere here.
25:35The base of an extraterrestrial civilization is located in the Bermuda Triangle.
25:41Visitors from other galaxies steal sea vessels along with the crew,
25:45so no one finds the wreckage of the ships.
25:48This is also a popular myth that has no scientific justification.
25:52The kraken lives somewhere in the Triangle.
25:55It's a huge squid that sinks ships and also is a legend that sailors tell each other.
26:00However, gigantic squids live in the depths of the ocean.
26:04They can grow to the size of a half a train car,
26:07but no cases have ever been recorded where they sunk a large vessel.
26:10And in the area of the Bermuda Triangle, they have never, ever been seen.
26:15People in the past didn't know about the existence of these creatures.
26:19So when they saw them for the first time, they described them as huge, terrible monsters.
26:25Giant squids are some of the most elusive creatures on Earth.
26:28And scientists had to use sonar equipment to find them.
26:32They don't like to leave the dark depths and are likely to be afraid of the sound of any ship.
26:37So that should squash the squid as a suspect.
