00:00This guy took a package from my porch and now he's about to open it in his car
00:03But what he doesn't know is this is a custom-built bait package that is recording him on four different
00:08cameras
00:08And it's about to unleash a pound of the world's finest glitter along with some other surprises
00:12But to understand how we got to this point first we need to rewind a bit
00:17About seven months ago. I noticed a package being reported as delivered, but it never arrived
00:21So when I checked our security cameras, I noticed this lovely couple out for a stroll
00:33As you can see they have backpacks on and they're just going around the neighborhood making an afternoon out of
00:38this
00:38If you've ever been in a situation like this you just sort of feel violated
00:42And then I took this to the police and even with the video evidence they said it's just not worth
00:46their time to look into
00:47So then you also feel powerless
00:49And I just felt like something needs to be done to take a stand against dishonest punks like this
00:54And then I was like hold up. I built a dartboard that moves to get a bullseye every time
00:59I spent nine years designing hardware
01:01That's currently roving around on another freaking planet
01:04If anyone was going to make a revenge bait package and over-engineer the crap out of it
01:08It was going to be me
01:10So I started with a sketch and some CAD and then I hit up my buddy Sean
01:13Who is really good with this type of small electronic stuff and we got to work
01:16Ultimately when they opened the package
01:18I just wanted to celebrate their choice of profession with a cloud of glitter
01:23Because I mean who doesn't love glitter?
01:25That's easy. I could just do that passively with like a spring when it opens
01:30But I also wanted to record their reaction
01:32And that's what makes the engineering here an order of magnitude more difficult
01:35Because if you think about it this thing has to sit on a porch all day and it can't be
01:39plugged in
01:39And you have no idea when someone will come and pick this up
01:42So it's not like you could just hit record on the camera and then put it in the box
01:45Because you're going to run out of battery and storage space
01:48On top of that I need some way to recover this footage in case I never get the bait package
01:52back
01:52So after six months and lots of design iterations and so much testing here's where we landed
02:02This custom printed circuit board is the brains of the operation
02:05It has a built-in accelerometer and when it's jostled it will check the gps signal to see if it's
02:09been moved from the porch
02:10And if so it sends a signal to all the phones to wake up and start recording
02:14And I'm using four phones that have a wide-angle filming mode and are angled back
02:18And this 3d printed portion is contoured this way because it represents the field of view of the phones
02:23So as you can see I'm guaranteed to capture their reaction no matter which way they open it from
02:28And nestled in here we've got a can of fart spray
02:31No joke you can clear a room with one spray of this stuff
02:34So we made a cam on a small motor that sprays it five times
02:37And not only is this just a nice touch but we keep repeating five sprays every 30 seconds
02:43Until they throw the package out of their car or house before they realize there's four phones inside
02:48This increases our chances of finding it because we always know the package location at all times due to the
02:53gps on the phones
02:54But even if we don't recover it all four phones have lte data plans
02:58So they upload the footage to the cloud so I can still see what happened
03:01And then for the piece de resistance
03:03We have a cup here on top that spins from a motor underneath
03:06So once you load in a butt ton of the world's finest glitter
03:09The motor spins really fast and the centrifugal force fires it evenly in all directions
03:13Then we cut holes in the side of the lid and covered them with one-way film
03:17So two of the cameras could see them as they walked away
03:19And then finally to make it look like an actual delivered package
03:22We added some shrink wrap and a delivery label
03:24Which is perhaps my favorite part of the whole thing
03:27Because if the thief wasn't in such a hurry
03:29They'd see that the package is actually coming from my childhood hero and inspiration for this project
03:34Kevin McAllister
03:35I even looked up and I'm using the address of the actual house they filmed the movie in
03:39And of course it's being shipped to his boys Harry and Marv
03:43And there's a charge port in the bottom because if it doesn't get stolen in a given day
03:47I can bring it in and then recharge all the batteries in the system overnight
03:50So the idea is the bad guy comes and takes it off your porch
03:53Then lifts the lid and these two limit switches tell the circuit board brain inside that the lid's been removed
03:58And then that sets everything in motion
04:00And I may be biased but sometimes a well-engineered design is beautiful
04:32And because the phones have GPS we created a virtual geofence around my house
04:36So I get a notification when the package has been moved off the property
04:39So I put it on the porch and now all that was left to do was wait
04:45Okay so I was at work and I got a notification that the geofence we set up had been tripped
04:49So then I checked the cameras and sure enough the package is gone
04:52So I checked the GPS and sort of tracked it
04:54And it appears they're in a car because they seem to leave my house pretty quickly
04:59But it seems to have stopped in a parking garage
05:02Which is where I'm headed to now
05:03And if you're new here this isn't a prank channel
05:06So I am completely out of my comfort zone
05:10And there she is
05:20Oh see some glitter
05:22This is like recovering the black box of a crashed airplane
05:25It would still work even if I didn't get the box back
05:28The footage would upload to the cloud
05:29But it's just faster to plug the phones in
05:31So I'm gonna go home and find out how this
05:34Somehow ended up here
05:36So it appears he was walking down the sidewalk
05:38And then suddenly makes a hard left
05:41Then he takes the package and gets in his car
05:43And eventually makes it to this parking garage
05:45Where this glorious sequence unfolds
05:57So I can't do this
05:57No way
06:07Look at that dude look at my car
06:10Dude
06:11Everything
06:13Oh my god
06:14I don't know what this is
06:18Literally like everywhere
06:27I'm going to get it on.
06:32Come on.
06:33Look at that smell.
06:36Look at that.
06:45Get out of here bro.
06:46You shouldn't even have grabbed it.
06:48Get this out of here.
06:50What do you want me to do?
06:51Get out of here.
06:59Take this stuff out of here.
07:01For real.
07:02Woo!
07:02Okay.
07:06Okay.
07:09Okay.
07:11Okay.
07:14Okay.
07:16Okay.
07:26Keep the change you filthy animal.
07:48So the moral of the story is, just don't take other people's stuff.
07:51Not only is it not cool, but on the plus side, you'll never find yourself in this situation.
07:56Or perhaps even worse, this one.
07:59I'm going to get in here and like, who you had in here?
08:25I'm going to get in here.
08:25Okay.
08:40Well, look.
08:41I had a break.
08:41I want to get in here.
