00:15Hi, my name is Mark Norris, senior producer for Guerrilla Games on Horizon Zero Dawn.
00:20And here we are, finally with Paris Games Week, we premiered Horizon Zero Dawn at E3
00:25and at that time we only showed the behind-closed doors to a number of the media members, but
00:31we've never shown it publicly.
00:32And finally, we are going to do that here today.
00:38One thing that you should know almost immediately is, yes, you can explore everything that you
00:42can see here, but we're on a quest.
00:45Now we've hidden that quest UI and that quest interface, but one of those two tribes that
00:49you saw previously in the trailer, one of them has given you a quest, and it's a quest
00:53of critical importance, and that quest is to get a very specific resource.
00:58It's a resource from the canisters that you can find on the back of this herd that we call
01:02the Grazers.
01:03Now, why do you need this resource?
01:06Why does this tribe need it?
01:07What is happening in this world?
01:09Those are still things that we're going to keep a mystery, but you will desperately need
01:13to retrieve this because it's a critical part of what's happening.
01:17As you're looking at this screen, for the very first time you're going to notice some
01:20of our UI or our HUD elements.
01:23Now the art on this isn't exactly final, but you can start to see how the game is really
01:28starting to creep into what we're doing.
01:30You can see in the top middle part of the screen that there is a compass.
01:34Now we've hidden our quest markers and our quest objectives, and we'll talk about a quest
01:37here in just a moment.
01:38But you can see a compass certainly denotes an open world style of adventure.
01:43In the upper right hand corner of the screen, what you can see is the very beginning of a
01:47level and an experience bar, so you can start to see the RPG elements start to seep in.
01:52In the lower left hand corner of the screen, you can actually see our health bar.
01:55It's unusual, it's painted like an arrow.
01:58Some of the tribal influences are certainly coming into the UI and HUD, and even though
02:01the art's not final, you can expect that those tribal influences will stay.
02:05You've seen a number of locales inside of the trailer for Horizon Zero Dawn.
02:09You've seen some desert, you've seen some snow, and of course you see here the forest.
02:12And currently Aloy is crouched in what we call some stealth grass, or some tall grass.
02:17Stealth plays an incredibly important part of Horizon Zero Dawn.
02:20In fact, you can see the UI element for this right underneath the compass is a little circle.
02:24That is in fact a stealth indicator.
02:26And so Aloy will need to wait for the right moment in order to introduce that stealth attack.
02:36So we mentioned that there are a couple of RPG elements, right?
02:39One of those things that you just saw, especially if you've got the keen eyes or if we zoom in
02:43on it, is the number 825 that just popped up.
02:46So that number 825 is incredibly important.
02:48Why?
02:49Because it denotes that there are, in fact, RPG elements hiding behind the hood.
02:53That is a damage value.
02:54We call that floating combat text, and you can see that number pop up.
02:57But now we've actually also gotten into the loot menu.
02:59Now, we've described previously how important the machine parts are to the world of Horizon
03:04Zero Dawn, but here we're showing you some of those parts.
03:07In fact, that flame coil that you can see on screen is one of the elements that's required
03:10to build explosive arrows.
03:12Now, machine parts are incredibly important.
03:14The economy, the entirety of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn is built around these machine parts.
03:20So here you can see Aloy picking up what is essentially a couple of health plans.
03:24Now those will fill up your health if you get low.
03:26But the important thing is actually what they represent.
03:29You will want to explore every nook and cranny of this open world.
03:33The ancient city, the tops of mountains, rivers and valleys, all kinds of settlements, because
03:38you never know what you'll find.
03:40Gorilla's DNA is strong in Horizon Zero Dawn.
03:43We've talked about this game being an action RPG.
03:45But Gorilla Games is really known for its action.
03:49What Aloy is going to do here is she's going to use what we call the explosive tripwire.
03:53And that is really used as a trap.
03:55It can be used as a defensive countermeasure, but it's mostly used as a preventative measure.
04:01She knows, because she spent so much time with these machines, that these grazers are incredibly
04:07skittish.
04:07That they will run off at the first sight of her or the first sight of noise.
04:11And she knows that if she's going to complete this quest, she's got to get those canisters.
04:15So for her, the best way to make sure this happens is to set these explosive tripwires
04:20down and try to find a way to force the grazers into the traps.
04:25So that's what we're going to try and do.
04:26We're going to set down a couple of these traps and we're going to try and create a distraction.
04:48The machines in Horizon Zero Dawn do have herd like activities.
04:52And here we have a species defending itself.
04:55These grazers allowing a couple of them to stick around to fight Aloy.
05:09This is the mighty Thunderjaw.
05:11One thing that you will immediately notice is the size differential between Aloy and the
05:16Thunderjaw.
05:17The Thunderjaw is 24 meters long and it's 10 meters wide.
05:20It has 93 destructible armor plates, each with its own health value.
05:25And it has 271 animations and 67 VFX.
05:28It has 12 attacks, it's 550,000 polygons.
05:31And so what we're taking a look at here is actually some of the strategic and tactical
05:35elements of a fight that Aloy will want to think about when she gets engaged with the
05:40Thunderjaw.
05:40So we're going to take a look right here at the fact that there's actually some weak points
05:44on the Thunderjaw.
05:45As you're taking a look at the leg here, that orange muscle that you can kind of see underneath
05:50there.
05:51That is also a weak point.
05:52If you're able to hit that, you're able to do four times the amount of damage that you
05:55would ordinarily do.
05:56Now the question is, how would you actually take off that armor plate?
06:00Now we give you a couple of options there, but the best option is to use the machine itself.
06:06So we're taking a look at the disc launcher right now and you saw earlier in the E3 trailer
06:10that you can shoot off the machine.
06:12You can shoot off the disc launcher, but you didn't know why we did it.
06:14The reason why we did it is because it takes a lot of arrows to knock off the Thunderjaw's
06:20armor plate.
06:20But if you can knock off its disc launcher, you can pick the disc launcher up and use
06:24its own weapons against it.
06:26And that's one of the best ways to take down the Thunderjaw.
06:34Fighting the Thunderjaw is an awe-inspiring experience.
06:37We talked previously about the fact that it has 12 attacks, a number of those attacks that
06:41you're seeing now you hadn't seen before.
06:43It's not that it has a tail swipe and a foot stomp and a little bit of a disc launcher
06:47attack.
06:48Shooting off those disc launchers is incredibly important for a second tactical reason.
06:51It has a 360 degree absolute assault with that disc launcher that makes it incredibly difficult
06:57for you to get anywhere close to it.
06:59So you're going to want to take off those disc launchers.
07:01But if you are, you'll notice now it still has a rail gun and a mouth laser.
07:06So this thing's serious even though it's previously damaged, it still has a huge amount of attacks.
07:12So what Aloy is going to try and do here is try to find a way to tie the machine
07:16down so
07:17that she gets a brief window to figure out her next move.
07:34So that was the play through of the behind closed door session of Horizon Zero Dawn.
07:39We cannot wait to show you more.
07:41We're going to show you something brand new and something huge next year.
07:45Thank you for the players.
