08:52It helps me
09:19So we're talking about
09:26So we're talking about
09:52We're talking about what that is
09:53We're talking about what that is
09:53We're talking about what that is
09:55We're going to make examples
09:59Because the sheriff, he wants to see people build a program that helps people to help themselves
10:16I'm in this pod for the road
10:23I'm in this pod for the road
10:40And so I'm in this pod for the road
10:51I'm in this pod for the road
10:52I'm in this pod for the road
10:54So we're talking about that
10:54And as always you can see there's a smile on my face because I'm always a happy person
10:59And I never thought that I really had an anger problem, but I guess deep down inside I do.
11:06And I was just learning how to fix it as the days go on.
11:11It takes so much energy to be angry, to frown, and this program, this right here, it's beautiful
11:20because the sky's the limit when it comes to love.
11:23Like, I love you, bro. I don't even know you like that, but guess what? I love you.
11:28You see what I'm saying? Like, I love y'all. I just want you guys to know that.
11:32What do you say? Hate, hate, hate.
11:40I've learned so much about myself and about others.
11:44We're all trying hard. We're all trying to work together and keep it going.
11:49Get over here.
11:50I don't want to fight. Like, my knuckles are already scarred and I got scars all over myself.
11:56So I got to change.
11:59For the people that love me and for the people that I love.
12:12Tomorrow is the last day of the experiment.
12:15And I have staff that are still not on board with this.
12:18I have not made up my mind yet.
12:20I'm expecting the inmates to provide me the information on why this program should continue.
12:29Sorry, I'm late.
12:35Today determines if this program stays or goes.
12:40So I guess it's how we reflect to him how it has changed us.
12:45It all comes down to this moment.
12:47Yeah.
12:50I probably think it won't continue.
12:52I mean, it's probably too much for the COs and too much for the staff.
12:59H100, it kind of went how I expected it to go.
13:02That pod has become incredibly disrespectful and it doesn't really sit too well with me in a structured environment like
13:10how this is supposed to be.
13:13So I'm not overly excited, I'll say.
13:18All right, guys.
13:19Here today to talk about what we said we were going to talk about today.
13:22So I'm here for you guys.
13:24You tell me.
13:28Sheriff, first of all, you know, I come from a long line of being in prison and living segregated racial
13:37lines my whole life.
13:38We've came together as a group and we dissolved those in this plot.
13:45You know, we all put those differences aside and we accept one another as human beings.
13:50And we came together and we worked together and it worked out.
13:57Politics is something that we fought about and we'll fight about until long after I'm gone.
14:01But really, I like what they are trying to accomplish here.
14:05Any kind of positive change is commendable.
14:08So we did talk last night and I know that a lot of us, most of us have programmed and
14:14really want this to continue.
14:15We also understand that the harder we make your officer's job, the harder it's going to be for us, you
14:21know, as far as we don't want to hold up the staff.
14:24Just respect the staff.
14:29I'm from DLC and in this pod, we get $50 a week with my conversation so I can stretch my
14:34shit out, you know what I'm saying?
14:37That's not why I came into the program.
14:39I came in to change myself and help myself and help the rest of the guys in here.
14:43So that's, I'm just letting you know, me personally, that's what I'm doing.
14:47I appreciate your candor.
14:48But thank you, thank you so much for giving this a chance, for giving me a chance to be in
14:52the program.
14:54I've never lasted a pod this long in any facility.
14:56You can look at my name, it doesn't matter, you know.
14:58This is the first time in my life when I actually plan on doing better and changing and it's thanks
15:01to this program.
15:02And I get out with actually trying to put things in place to do better when I'm out rather than
15:06put things in place just to self-destruct.
15:09That was actually my next question.
15:10For those of you that have been down before, what makes this time different?
15:15Take a look at all the men you see in front of me, sir.
15:19None of us are the same person that walked through these doors six weeks ago.
15:23See, I've been coming in and out of these jails for a long time.
15:27And this is the first time I've wanted to change, you know?
15:31And I wouldn't have had that opportunity if it wasn't for these days.
15:34Understood.
15:38Like, maybe we're all just blowing smoke up your ass to get these benefits, you know what I'm saying?
15:42Maybe that is what's going on.
15:43Maybe we're all just, like, you know, saying all these things and doing all these things just so we can
15:46get these benefits and, like, get the rewards from, like, what we're putting into it, you know?
15:51But I don't think that's the case, you know what I'm saying?
15:53We're initiating our own groups out there and running them ourselves.
15:56Like, instead of just doing, like, what you guys expect, we're going to try to go above and beyond, you
16:00know, and do our own thing, you know?
16:02It's our voice.
16:02It's what we think, you know?
16:03I think that's the biggest thing.
16:05Sir, you got something?
16:07We're going to have to go through a lot of bumps.
16:09And what we're trying to tackle here is not just for ourselves.
16:12It's for the people that come next.
16:14Here it's our mission to make the world a better place.
16:17And that's why we feel like this program has some merit to it.
16:21It shouldn't stop.
16:23Good job, bro.
16:24That's good.
16:30After they presented me with their ideas, I was actually impressed that they had some grounded, realistic expectations of the
16:38program.
16:39But, of course, we've had a lot of problems over the last six weeks.
16:42And today doesn't erase all of that.
16:44So, right now, I don't know what we're going to do.
16:47Well, guys, let me go out and speak to my command staff.
16:49All right?
16:50I appreciate you guys' input.
16:52Obviously going to be input from them.
16:53And I'll be back tomorrow, guys.
16:55All right?
16:55Thank you, sir.
16:56Thank you, guys.
16:57Appreciate it.
17:01Initially, I didn't want it.
17:04But now that I see that the pod is doing well, the program as a whole, I think it's great
17:09for the community and for these guys that want change within their life.
17:14Look, we stood up as men.
17:15We fucking went through the program.
17:17We changed our lives, you know?
17:19And we did it with honor and dignity.
17:22You follow me?
17:23I think that the staff has something to say about it.
17:29They don't want to deal with it.
17:31I think he's going to come back with good news.
17:34I mean, we did work hard.
17:36It's nice to watch the fruits of our labor pay off.
17:38Like, I hope it continues because it gives us a chance to continue to do what we're doing and continue
17:44to grow.
17:44I like to learn from you.
17:46I like to learn from everybody, too.
17:47If he stops it, it's going to stop us from growing.
17:51Yeah.
17:52Fuck.
17:53I've been lost in my life for a long time in doing just things because I didn't know the direction
17:58I was going in.
18:00So, uh, for someone that has made a bunch of terrible mistakes, I'm grateful that I'm in the program and
18:07that, you know, I hope that the program continues after all this.
18:21So basically went in and talked to the inmates and wanted them to tell me why the program should continue.
18:26But at the end of the day, I wanted to find out from you guys, was there enough positive that
18:32it outweighed the negative that happened with it?
18:35Well, it's been a long six weeks, so I'm going to the end right now.
18:37It's been six weeks.
18:38We've had some ups and downs.
18:40Um, it was pretty bad at first, you know.
18:43It seems like in the last few weeks, though, you know, they came together.
18:49Yeah, I agree.
18:50They talked about the positive programming, however they can get the experience and get the life skills that they're going
18:57to need.
18:57Yeah.
18:58I mean, you would think that they would have been asking about more visitation like we gave them, you know,
19:04more commissary like we gave them, stuff like that.
19:06But if they're coming to you about the programs, then maybe if we steer it towards that, maybe it's something
19:11that really works.
19:13So we have definitely seen a change from the start.
19:15A lot of their concerns, you know, it sounded like it was, um, legitimate.
19:21Uniform staff doesn't get that a lot with those guys.
19:24They don't really open up to us with legit concerns other than that stuff that they want around here and
19:31extra stuff that they can get.
19:32So it was actually good to see.
19:34I understand we had hurdles.
19:36I understand we had hiccups.
19:38That's going to happen with an experiment when you try something new.
19:41But let's be honest, a lot of our line level staff, they were not for this when it started.
19:46Well, you saw our faces in the first meeting when you advised us.
19:51So, you know.
19:53I mean, there's still going to be some staff that are reluctant just because they're going to see this as
19:57extra work that they didn't really ask for.
20:00Weighing the pros and cons, there were two aspects of this experiment for it to be successful.
20:05I wanted the inmates to accept more responsibility for their wellbeing and step up and become productive members of their
20:11neighborhood, which is now that pod.
20:13But I also don't want to burden my staff with extra work that prevents them from their primary duties of
20:18security and getting home safe.
20:20So I appreciate the talk guys and I'll make a decision and I appreciate all the input.
20:26Sure.
20:27Thanks for meeting with us.
20:28Thank you guys.
20:37While they wait for the sheriff's decision, the inmates are trying to take advantage of the remaining time, knowing that
20:44tomorrow the experiment might be over and their privileges gone.
20:53Hey, Dad.
20:55How you doing?
20:56Good.
20:58So when my son William wasn't able to make the visiting, I thought it probably would be a good thing
21:03to talk to him about it and let him know what my feelings were at the time.
21:07Yeah.
21:08I got all freshed up and stuff.
21:11Okay.
21:12That's good.
21:14I got all freshed up.
21:19How's everything going?
21:21Were you able to make it?
21:23Nah.
21:23The thing is, I don't even have enough money.
21:26Okay.
21:27Okay.
21:28Yeah.
21:28I'm in the book right now.
21:30If anything, I got like one, like a hundred.
21:33And with an Uber, I mean, most people are not.
21:36I'm willing to go that far.
21:39I really wanted to see you, though.
21:42My son, he knows a lot.
21:45I'm glad he didn't follow in my footsteps.
21:47He's a college student now.
21:49So I'm very, very, very proud of him.
21:52I'm trying to get a virus off my computer, that's all.
21:54Oh, yeah?
21:55All that stuff I fired.
21:59Wait, so wait, when did they say you would get out?
22:04Right now, I don't know my release date.
22:06They told me that I had 2.5, 2.5 to do in prison.
22:11Okay.
22:11Which is going to fly by real quick.
22:14Even though I didn't get to see him, I was able to talk with him on the phone.
22:17And I was just letting him know that it was okay, you know what I mean?
22:20You didn't get to show up.
22:22I'm still here.
22:23You're still in my heart.
22:24And I'm still thinking about you.
22:25But it's okay, though.
22:27It's okay.
22:28All right.
22:29Thank you, man.
22:29I love you.
22:30Love you, too.
22:38This will be my first visit ever, ever.
22:41All the fucking time I've done it, in all the county jails, in all the fucking prisons,
22:45in the different states.
22:46I never got a visit.
22:48But today is the day, you know?
22:53All right, so who's here to visit?
22:55All right, if you guys want to come with me, you're going to need to sign in, and then
22:58I'm going to need you guys back.
23:02Who's going?
23:02All right?
23:04Murphy!
23:05Murphy!
23:06Oh, yeah, boy!
23:08Woo-hoo!
23:09My dog right there.
23:10Love you, brother.
23:12I'm a good one, bro.
23:13Woo!
23:19Elwood!
23:20Good job!
23:21How do you like Elwood?
23:22Take your tissue.
23:23Take your tissue.
23:23It's a really emotional moment.
23:25And just understanding that I'm going to get the chance.
23:27Especially Akili and Crystal.
23:29It's really, really important to me.
23:32I'm, you know, I'm already sitting here thinking about what to say, you know?
23:38All right.
23:43Okay.
23:46Here we go.
23:47That's it.
23:55You're playing, right?
23:57It was fun.
23:58I cried in the beginning, though.
24:01You've got to give me a minute.
24:02I swear.
24:03I'm coming.
24:04I swear.
24:05She's crying.
24:08I just want to say I'm sorry for not being there for so long, okay?
24:12You are just such an amazing young lady.
24:15Just in the letters I'm talking to you.
24:17I'm just so fucking proud of you.
24:18You don't even understand, okay?
24:22Oh, Arizona tore my life apart ten years ago.
24:26So...
24:28Hey!
24:30How you doing?
24:32I'm all right.
24:33I had to kind of get that out of my sister.
24:36I told you you were going to cry.
24:39I don't even know why I fucking bothered wearing goddamn makeup.
24:44I was just really nervous, and then I didn't know.
24:48Yeah, we were sitting in the lobby, and my stomach was, like, all turning and stuff.
24:52Keeley is an amazing young lady, and just, like, the way she carries herself, and Crystal, too.
24:59Just, like I said, the willingness that they took time out of their lives for somebody that hasn't been present
25:06in it for so long.
25:07You know, it shows a lot.
25:10Fuck.
25:10I don't even know what to say right now.
25:11I'm sorry.
25:13This is insane.
25:14It feels unreal, honestly.
25:16Right.
25:18Just, you guys, I'm really sorry for being selfish, and only worrying about my own needs these last 11 years.
25:25And I can't describe enough how much, how sorry I am for it.
25:30Like, really.
25:30And I want you to tell your sisters that, too.
25:33Like...
25:35I feel like he's really trying to get back in our lives, no matter what.
25:41And I feel like, this time, he's really going to follow through with his plan, hopefully.
25:46I'm trying to do the best that I can in here to better myself each day for you guys, okay?
25:51And for myself.
25:52And I'm sorry.
25:53And I can't change anything, but I'm definitely...
25:56I can't change the past, and I'm not going to promise anything, but I'm going to try every day.
26:00And we'll be here voting for you.
26:04Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
26:05I love you guys.
26:06All right.
26:07I love you.
26:07Love you.
26:08Thank you for coming.
26:09Tell your sisters I love the fuck out of them, okay?
26:11I love you guys.
26:26I see my old husband.
26:35I can.
26:36I can see the man that I fell in love with 20 years ago starting to come back.
26:40And that's nice.
26:43Hello?
26:45Hello?
26:46Hello?
26:48Hello?
26:49Hello?
26:49Hello?
26:51Hello?
26:52Hello?
26:52Hello?
26:54Hello?
26:56I told you as soon as you walked in, bring the tissue.
26:58Yeah, I know.
27:00Like, it was fucking awesome.
27:02Yeah, I was super happy.
27:04It is fucking life-changing having that human connection with people in your family that you love.
27:11I really appreciate being a part of this program and getting me in contact with my kids.
27:16I'm not the same person that I was four months ago.
27:19I can't change the past, you know, and I can't promise tomorrow, but I can work on today's
27:25And this is only the beginning if I can do this in six weeks, you know, what can I do
27:29in six years?
27:31How bad did you cry though?
27:45While waiting to hear the final verdict from the sheriff the pod decides to come together for what might be
27:51the last time
28:02political rules, they're set in stone in some of these higher, you know, custody institutions or prison or anything like
28:09that
28:09But us making a difference here in the people that are behind us as lives is what I'm focusing on
28:17What I'd like to do is throw a spread and we're taking all the race cards out of it, okay
28:22And we're gonna have food on the table
28:25We're doing it now, we're just taking a collection and then we're gonna cook in a tub and then we're
28:30gonna put it out there
28:30I'm gonna go put something there right now
28:33Hey, if you can get out of all that, then there's more power
28:39We're trying to break that racial divide, man
28:43All right, thank you, I'm gonna throw in
28:46I'm not saying that this is gonna change everything, you know, but it's a start for us
28:51You know, for some of us that have been down some pretty rough roads, man
28:55And if I can lead by example and say, hey, look
29:01This is just a county jail, it's not prison and it's a total different entity
29:05But if we start here, you know what, things can really happen over there
29:10Trust me, I used to be a dietitian to cook for 358 patients a day in two meals
29:14Yeah, I got you, I told you I got you
29:16Don't even worry about it, don't even worry about it, it's dead
29:20What we're trying to do is bring inclusion to everybody there
29:23Unfortunately, you know, in Arizona a lot of times it don't run that way
29:27And just for us to be able to come together as a community actually
29:31And show sheriff people that there are people that are trying to do something different
29:36Just to be a part of this change is amazing
29:38So I got two fucking oysters this time, two tunas, a rice, and a fucking, so you can put it
29:42in a log, and you can put it in a log in a soup, so it can be fucking amazing
29:47It might be the last night of the program, kind of like the last supper, you know
29:56Real quick, man, I want to, first of all, I want to thank you guys for coming down
30:00And this is a show of gratitude, solidarity, we're going to sit here, we're going to break bread, man
30:08And we're going to come together as a pod and to show the world, man, that you know what, we
30:13can do this, man, we can do this
30:14Thank you guys
30:16Thank you
30:16Thank you
30:20It was super cool to have every race sit down and them cook, and you'll never see that
30:24I've never seen that on any yard ever
30:28We don't do that
30:29It's unity
30:30That's what every yard's supposed to be, that's what we're supposed to be
30:36Dear Heavenly Father, please bless this meal we're about to receive, Lord, and thank you for your blessings throughout the
30:41day
30:41We come to you humbly
30:45Asking thanks for bringing this
30:47Peace to this pod, the whole six weeks we've been in here
30:50We haven't had hardly any problems, Lord, and we want to put a hedge of protection around each and every
30:53one of these men
30:54And Lord, I'd really like to put a hedge of protection, Lord, around the drug addict that still suffers in
30:59and out of these jails, Lord
31:01Watch their families and watch our families as well
31:03In Jesus' sweet name I pray to you, amen
31:06Amen
31:21Each and every one of you I can look at is different in little ways
31:24Than when you guys first came in here
31:25But really, you guys, just thank you for being part of my life right now, honestly
31:29And my recovery, and what I'm trying to do, and just everything
31:33I've been messing with all that
31:34We love you too, Woody
31:36All right, I'm gonna shut up and eat and fuck you guys
31:38We're going home
31:42Yeah, so, like, I've been pushing that since I got here, like, we was already on this
31:49Dang, like, this program really changing us for the better
31:52Like, if y'all want to work the program and become a community and united, like, that's part of it
31:57I'm trying to change the whole world in memory of my granny
32:00Like, that's all I can do at this point
32:02From the first time we did it, from now, you know, it was a lot different for sure
32:06Like, everyone just was just another normal day, you know, so it's cool
32:18Oh, my God
32:42So for all you guys who eat mustard,
32:45I love mustard.
32:46Just understand something.
32:49So we're going to sign this.
32:50You let it sit for 10 minutes,
32:53and then you wipe it off.
32:55And it'll be like that forever.
32:56It's never going anywhere.
33:03This is it.
33:04Hard to believe we're here.
33:06Last day of a six-week experiment,
33:08and it's all come down to the end.
33:11We didn't go into it thinking
33:13it was going to be a runaway success.
33:16There were times during this experiment
33:18I was just like, oh.
33:20Yeah.
33:23There were moments of conflict.
33:25Gentlemen, lock down.
33:30But the inmates worked through them.
33:32I take this fucking shit serious right here.
33:35This is my fucking life.
33:36They are definitely the most responsible pod that we have.
33:39We've come a long way, me and you, huh?
33:42But at the end of the day,
33:43did they really make enough progress
33:45to keep this program going?
33:46Oh, my God.
33:47That's what I've been trying to decide.
33:56We're all right.
33:58All right.
34:00All right.
34:01Hey, everybody.
34:01Get down here.
34:02Go.
34:03Get down.
34:04Go.
34:05Go.
34:05Get down.
34:07Go.
34:12Get down here.
34:17Go.
34:18Go.
34:18believe that people are gonna put this kind of time and effort us included into
34:22this for it to just end so maybe I'm looking at the positive side of it and
34:26hoping for much but you know that that's where I'm at right now I want to see the
34:29positive in anything that I can so I talked to my staff and I'll be honest
34:38with you guys I liked a lot of the input that I had when I came in here
34:43talking to you guys I will also be honest with you guys I think there's
34:47some people in here that are really really really working hard to better
34:51themselves and better this community and there's people in here that are just in
34:55here to get the freebies the free phone calls and their game in the system that
35:01that's the God's honest truth one of the things that I liked developing there was
35:07is they were actually using societal self-governance not internal politics
35:12self-governance they were starting to think like a neighborhood not thinking
35:15about solely their race based on my experience working in the prison system
35:19for 12 years seeing them all sit down at the same table and pray together
35:24holding hands is not something you ever see in the Arizona prison systems
35:29especially when you account for the racial politics that exist but I also need to
35:34acknowledge all of the problems we've had along the way you guys wanted to know
35:39what we decided we're gonna keep the doors unlocked let's continue on with this
36:00even though I definitely wasn't happy with all of their actions program as a whole was a success
36:05because they took the opportunity to develop life skills making their own
36:10choices that they want to make their life better so they don't reoffend and they don't come back
36:18you guys need to pat yourselves on the back
36:26we can't say thank you enough now for giving us this opportunity sheriff
36:30wow unfathomable like this yeah I think it's yeah yeah we're still going to continue to push forward and and
36:41bring up the people behind us is what it's really all about and so we thank you man we're really
36:48happy
36:50thanks the door's been unlocked that's fantastic gives us room to move and create a better program
36:58people make really bad choices you know that get us here but at the end of the day you know
37:04there
37:04are starting to be ways to better that and that's that's awesome you know like the world's changing and hopefully
37:10for better
37:25is anybody else's eyes tearing up fuck that's bright
37:39it's going good right now you know I spend my days uh I get to talk to my daughters you
37:44know
37:45and um focusing on sobriety and getting a degree you know like it out that I can maybe get into
37:52electrical board and so the program at Pennell County has helped me I want to experience life
37:58now and I know I need to start now if I ever have a chance when I get out it's
38:04kind of humbling
38:20people go to college they go into fraternities well this was like a fraternity we were all a family
38:26we're one family we're just trying to do better I'm gonna hold everybody accountable because I'm
38:30holding myself accountable
38:45I want to be a different animal when I get out here I'm still gonna be an animal
38:52really but can't change that instead of being a grizzly I'm gonna be a panda bear you know what
38:57I mean hey they're pretty vicious I've been a fucking thug and a fucking gangster my whole life
39:03and you know I'm done with it
39:15I don't want to be all out no more I just want to go home
39:18I just want to get out and be with my kids and just start building relationships with people
39:23and building relationships with my family
39:27any more questions
39:42how you guys doing getting better every day for the number of infractions that take place in that
39:49pod they are significantly less than the other pods inside my jail I like to get over here this is
39:55one
39:55of my pet projects just get over with you guys and like to get a little one-on-one information
40:00from
40:01you and we're gonna keep on with it and I'm happy to say it's still working to this day
40:15so since I've been I've been out I've just been working going to going to class you know
40:19trying to stay out of trouble spending time with my family that's it
40:26these guys want to leave me they won't leave me for nothing
40:32I was fucking up but I got my eyes got open we don't got to keep doing what we're doing
40:37you know
40:38it's never late to turn back
40:41go throw this inside the back over there in the closet please with the dirty clothes
40:46before I got locked up I was putting my kids and her to the side for that for the drug
40:50this time you know that's all that was on my mind my kids my kids my kids my kids
41:02so this is what I accomplished by doing good you know my family I fell but now I got myself
41:07up
