00:14So, you may be wondering
00:16First,
00:18Who the heck am I?
00:19Second, and more importantly
00:21What happened to Paul?
00:23And to Jeff? And to Josh?
00:26Well, I'll start with the second first
00:28And say they're all fine
00:29They haven't been eaten by squigs
00:32Nor are they out playing some other game
00:35Where they are
00:36Is letting me
00:38Speak for a change
00:40And frankly, the way they do
00:42You don't need to hear me very often
00:43But today, I think it's actually
00:46A very good time for me to speak
00:47So first, my name is Mark Jacobs
00:50I am the co-founder
00:52Of Mythic Entertainment
00:53And now, the general manager
00:56Of EA Mythic
00:58But I am also the lead designer
01:00Of Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning
01:02Why it's important that I'm here today?
01:04It's because we're going to talk about crafting
01:07When I first started doing the design for Warhammer
01:10Over two years ago
01:11One of the things that I really wanted to have
01:15Was a crafting system that was fun
01:18That was innovative
01:19And that was, quite frankly
01:22Something that we, especially, hadn't done before
01:27How did I go about laying this out?
01:29How did I go about designing it?
01:31It's very simple
01:31I started with two negatives
01:33First negative
01:34Was I didn't want it to be grinding
01:37Now we all know what that means
01:38It means making hundreds
01:39If not thousands of items
01:41That you can't sell
01:42Or if you can sell it
01:43Can't sell them for much
01:44Or that you have to give them away
01:46Or you just have to jump them
01:48Because they're not really useful
01:50The grinding is just used
01:52To take up time
01:53As you go up levels in the game
01:55Did not want that
01:56The other thing I didn't want
01:59I did not want this to be a recipe-based game
02:02Now, it's not that I have anything
02:04Really against recipe-based games
02:05But frankly, it's been done a lot
02:08Most MMOs use a recipe-based system
02:10So I thought, that's not what I wanted to see for us
02:14So what does that mean to the crafting system
02:17As it stands today?
02:19Well, first of all
02:21It means that it's not recipe-based
02:23I'll go into that in a little bit
02:25But second
02:26It also means that it is not grindy
02:29We don't want people
02:31Spending all their time
02:32Making objects
02:33Especially useless objects
02:35In the game
02:36Just to advance
02:37What we want
02:38Is for people to have fun
02:40So let's dive right in
02:42And start talking about crafting
02:43In Warhammer Online
02:45Age of Reckoning
02:46First of all
02:47When we say crafting
02:48What we're really talking about
02:50Is a collection of skills
02:51These skills
02:52At least for now
02:53Are apothecary
02:54Talisman making
02:55Cultivating
02:56Magical salvaging
02:57Scavenging
02:58And butchering
02:59Apothecary and talisman making
03:02Are crafting skills
03:03The other four
03:04Are gathering skills
03:05As a player
03:07You can only have
03:08One crafting skill
03:09And one gathering skill
03:10At any one time
03:12You will learn these skills
03:13From trainers throughout the world
03:15Starting when your character
03:16Begins to quest an adventure
03:18In the second chapter
03:20Of their own realm story
03:21You'll be allowed to switch skills
03:23By talking with trainers in game
03:25But switching skills
03:26Is a big deal
03:27And all progress made
03:29In your previous skill set
03:30Will be lost
03:31So you need to be sure
03:33To put it simply
03:34The gathering skills
03:36Get you all the ingredients
03:37And the crafting skills
03:39Well they let you put
03:40Everything together
03:41We'll start with the gathering skills
03:43So let's delve right into cultivating
03:45Players with the cultivation skill
03:47Can grow their own weeds and fungi
03:49Most weeds and fungi
03:51Are apothecary ingredients
03:53You don't need to be in a special place
03:55To do cultivating
03:56You can do it everywhere
03:58Let's go over the steps
03:59Of growing these plants
04:01Before you can grow things
04:03You'll need seeds or spores
04:05There are several ways
04:06You can get them
04:07First
04:08There's a merchant
04:09In each chapter 2
04:11That sells all the basic
04:12Low level seeds
04:14Certain monsters
04:15Often drop seeds and spores
04:17And some seeds
04:18Can also be found from scavenging
04:20You may start with a single plot
04:22For growing plants
04:23But as you advance
04:25You will gain as many as 4 plots
04:27By the way
04:28All this is subject to change
04:30Next comes the growth cycle
04:32The growth cycle of weeds
04:35And fungi
04:35Is itself broken down into 3 stages
04:38During the first stage
04:40You can add soil
04:41During the second stage
04:43You can add water
04:44And during the third
04:45You can add nutrients
04:47These items speed up
04:49The remaining time in each step
04:51And other additives
04:51Can affect the chance
04:53That something out of the ordinary
04:54Will grow as well
04:56When a plant is grown
04:57You'll need to harvest it
04:59This places the plant
05:00Into your backpack
05:01And sets the plot back to empty
05:03As you might expect
05:05Seeds and spores
05:06All have skill level requirements
05:08You won't be able to place
05:10High skill level seeds
05:11Into an empty plot
05:12If your skill is too low
05:15Now, let's look at another gathering skill
05:18Magical salvaging
05:20Magical salvagers can break down magic items
05:23Converting them into magical fragments
05:26These magic items are found in all manner of quests, PvE, and RVR encounters
05:33When a player magically salvages an item
05:36He or she gets to choose which bonus to extract from it
05:39Hey, I'm back!
05:40So, let's say that the item you're salvaging has two bonuses on it
05:44Willpower and intelligence
05:46You get to choose which bonus you want to extract
05:50So, sometimes you may want willpower
05:52Sometimes you may want intelligence
05:54The point is, it's your decision
05:56Salvaging also produces magical essences
05:59Primarily, these fragments and essences are used to make talismans
06:03Which we'll discuss when we move on to the crafting skills
06:07For now, let's continue talking about gathering skills
06:11Which leads us to scavenging and butchering
06:14I mention them together because these gathering skills are two sides of the same coin
06:20Since they both describe the skill of extracting resources from dead creatures
06:24There is an important distinction, however
06:27Scavenging can only be used on relatively intelligent, sentient creatures
06:33Butchering is only used on non-sentient creatures
06:36Think of it this way
06:37If it's smart enough to wear clothes, then it's probably got pockets
06:41And then you'll need to scavenge
06:42No clothes means no pockets
06:45And you'll need to butcher
06:47So, let's talk about scavenging
06:49The first thing we'll need is a corpse
06:51In order to scavenge a dead monster, that monster must be completely looted
06:56There will be an easy way to tell if a creature can be scavenged
07:00There will be flies buzzing around the corpse
07:02Next, you must own the scavenging rights for that creature
07:06Scavenging rights are initially owned by the player or group who killed the monster
07:11After a while, however, the scavenging rights open up to any scavenger
07:16When you first learn the skill, you'll be able to scavenge dead monsters up to level 5
07:21As your skill increases, you'll be able to scavenge high-level dead monsters
07:27We'll finish discussing gathering skills by talking about butchering
07:33Butchering is for all intents and purposes exactly like scavenging
07:37Except only non-sentient monsters can be butchered
07:41So, the only thing you can recover from their corpses are meat, skin, and bones
07:46What do you expect? It's butchering
07:49These ingredients have very specific and important uses, however
07:53Which leads us to our first crafting skill
07:57Apothecary
07:58Apothecary is a skill that allows players to create potions, lotions, and powders
08:03You can use this skill anywhere, anyplace, and anytime
08:08Once a player has the apothecary skill, he or she will then need some ingredients
08:14Merchants will sell all the necessary ingredients to make low-level potions
08:18However, ingredients for high-level apothecary
08:22Will naturally come from cultivating, scavenging, and butchering
08:27And a few other surprises
08:29So, now that we know where we get ingredients
08:32Let's run through how a player uses apothecary
08:35The first thing a player needs is a container
08:37No crafting, of course, can be done without one
08:40It's messy, and it burns your clothing
08:42Most apothecary containers have four slots
08:46The first slot is for the main ingredient
08:49Main ingredients determine what kind of potion you are going to make
08:53However, main ingredients are very, very unstable
08:57To make the overall concoction stable enough to succeed
09:01You'll need to add additional ingredients
09:04Once you've started hunting down higher-level ingredients
09:07Skilled potion makers will realize that they can start designing potions
09:11So the apothecary system, at its heart, is all about experimentation
09:15It's about taking this ingredient, and that ingredient, and that ingredient
09:19Putting it together and see what happens
09:22Sometimes things work really well
09:24Sometimes things work exceptionally well
09:27Some ingredients make concoctions more stable
09:30Some make potion effects last longer
09:33And some even increase the number of doses made
09:36If your creation is unstable
09:39There is a chance that the potion will fail
09:42Luckily, although your container may be destroyed in such a failure
09:46The ingredients gathered by player's skill cannot be lost
09:50So, here's another example of how we leave so much of the decision-making
09:54Regarding the crafting system up to the player
09:57Let's say you're going to do RVR tonight
09:59Maybe you only have two hours
10:01So you're going to craft some potions
10:03That are only going to last this long
10:05And will be very powerful
10:07On the other hand, if you were going to do PvE
10:10And wanted to play for, say, six hours
10:13You're going to craft potions that are a little less powerful
10:15But will last this long
10:18Furthermore, there's always the chance that something truly extraordinary might happen
10:22Making your potion a lot more than you expected
10:27And let's finish by talking about our last crafting skill
10:31Talisman making
10:33As you might have guessed
10:34This skill allows players to make talismans
10:38We're kind of clever, aren't we?
10:40Talismans are minor items of power
10:43Which can be attached to some armor and weapons
10:45Only rare and powerful items can have talismans attached to them
10:49To make a talisman, you will need four items from various crafting and gathering skills
10:55Including, of course, a magical fragment from magical salvaging
11:00You could consider this the main ingredient
11:04Combining these objects requires a container
11:07Just like apothecary
11:08The overall power of the talisman depends on the total power of the four ingredients
11:14More powerful fragments and essences are likely to make a better talisman
11:20Some talisman effects give bonuses to stats, armor, and resistances
11:25More powerful talismans can have much more elaborate bonuses
11:32I can assure you of one thing
11:34That no matter what, you will see that what we are trying to create
11:38Is something different
11:38Something interesting
11:40And we hope and expect
11:42That it will be fun as well
11:45If you look at what we did at Camelot
11:47Taking something that was
11:50Heavily evolutionary
11:51But with enough revolutionary things in it
11:54Like RVR
11:54To make it a great game
11:56That is what we are trying to do with the crafting system
11:59Take a non-recipe based system
12:02Take a non-grindy based system
12:04These are not new ideas
12:06But take them and put them together in a really interesting way
12:10A way that will be fun for the players
12:12Whether they are PvE geared
12:14Whether they are RVR geared
12:16Whether they just, frankly, even want to craft a little bit
12:21All in all, I think we are on track to having a great system
12:25But in the end
12:27It will be up to you
12:28To decide
12:30Whether we have hit it or not
12:31I hope we have
12:33I hope we have hit a home run with this system
12:35Just as we have with things like the Tome of Knowledge
12:37With public quests
12:38And other things in our game
12:40That are really going to set a new standard for MMOs
12:44We are working very hard on this system
12:46And over the next few months
12:48We are going to talk a lot more
12:50About not only what I have talked about today
12:52But other systems as well
12:55We hope you find them as compelling to play as they have been to make
13:00But no matter what
13:02I thank you all for your interest in our game
13:04In crafting
13:05And just frankly everything else that we do here
13:08I hope you enjoy it as much
13:10As we have enjoyed making the game so far
13:13Thank you very, very much
13:15Thank you very, very much
13:16Thank you very, very much
13:21You're welcome
