00:00:26You should drink something hard.
00:00:29Shhh. We'll go to your room. It will be safer. Lead the way.
00:00:33As you wish.
00:01:04You should drink something hard.
00:01:22You should drink something hard.
00:01:37You should drink something hard.
00:02:07You should drink something hard.
00:02:10You transform each expedition into a greater success than the last.
00:02:14The Spanish caravelles sail slowly and unprotected.
00:02:17Lightning their weight has become a child's play.
00:02:20My congratulations.
00:02:22Any English child is worth more than a hundred Spanish adults.
00:02:27It is an honour to serve you, my justy.
00:02:29And a pleasure to do so at the expense of the Spaniels.
00:02:33I would like you to be fresh for the celebration I have prepared in your honour.
00:02:38Go and rest.
00:02:39So be it.
00:02:40Majesty.
00:02:46Majesty.
00:02:49Give me a caravel and I'll triple your profits.
00:02:53This rally makes me nervous.
00:02:56You are far more useful to me here than on the sea.
00:03:00Let each do his job.
00:03:03What else do we have, Lord Cecil?
00:03:05The Spanish ambassador.
00:03:07Bernardino de Mendoza wishes to be received.
00:03:10Send him in.
00:03:12We are going to have a little fun.
00:03:15This could get intense.
00:03:19Ambassador Mendoza, welcome.
00:03:22With all due respect, your majesty, I come to present an official complaint on behalf of the Kingdom of Spain.
00:03:30What is it this time?
00:03:31Too much fog for the eyes of your Andalusian horses?
00:03:34Or is the roast beef too raw for your embassy guests?
00:03:39If the provocation of the act of piracy by your boats against the Spanish merchant navy, stealing our cargoes under
00:03:46your majesty's protection seems so unimportant to you, I have nothing more to say.
00:03:52I was joking, but it is a very serious accusation.
00:03:58Serious indeed.
00:03:59One that may have an equally serious response from the Spanish Amaro.
00:04:03Will you be more specific, please?
00:04:05The proof is the individual I have just passed, who attacks with impunity and his ship is interested in plundering.
00:04:14How much longer will you permit this insolence?
00:04:16The King of Spain is rather furious, for there are serious reasons to believe that the English crown is becoming
00:04:26rich by stealing the cargoes of Spanish ship.
00:04:29How dare you!
00:04:31Tell your king that the cargo he is transporting belongs to the new world.
00:04:39Therefore, its origin is as illicit as the way in which the Corsairs obtain it.
00:04:44And, of course, they have nothing to do with this court.
00:04:47Are you insinuating that our traitors are pirates?
00:04:50I also have indications that your king is building a powerful armada to destroy us.
00:04:56That is preposterous and untrue.
00:04:59Our armies are fighting at the present moment in the Low Countries.
00:05:02To put down a rebellion by William of Orange, a rebellion you're helping to finance with the money you steal
00:05:08from us.
00:05:10Walsingham, that is enough.
00:05:12Proceed.
00:05:13Guards!
00:05:15Accompany the ambassador to the port.
00:05:18And have the Spanish embassy closed.
00:05:20Immediately.
00:05:22Your belongings will be sent on later.
00:05:26You will pay dearly for this outrage.
00:05:30And you and your country will be accused of high treason.
00:05:35What are you talking about?
00:05:37We'll find out immediately.
00:05:39Walsingham.
00:05:41Soldiers, bring in the prisoner.
00:05:49Ambassador Mendoza.
00:05:51Do you know this individual?
00:05:54I've never seen this man before in my life.
00:05:58Perhaps his appearance is confusing you.
00:06:01Do you doubt my word, sir?
00:06:05We doubt you as much as you doubt your signatures on these letters sent to the prisoner, Lord Throckmorton.
00:06:11Are you starting to remember, Mr. Mendoza?
00:06:15Interesting.
00:06:17If they're written by someone I do not know, and you claim they're signed by me, well, there are obviously
00:06:23forgeries.
00:06:24These letters are proof that Lord Throckmorton and you were leading a plot to assassinate our queen.
00:06:30They're just saying that.
00:06:32That's a fallacy you're saying to cover for your pirates.
00:06:36Throckmorton, will you explain to the ambassador what you just confessed to us?
00:06:42They have said it already.
00:06:46We intended on killing your majesty so that Mary Stewart should be our queen.
00:06:53The support came from Spain through its ambassador here present.
00:06:58Look at the man. He's obviously confessed, and the torture, it's incorruptible.
00:07:04Do not fear for your life, ambassador.
00:07:08Tell your king to direct his ambition to rule the world towards another country, or he must face the consequences.
00:07:17You were here from us.
00:07:20And you from us.
00:07:22Accompany him out.
00:07:30May God forgive you.
00:07:5025 years since I began this project.
00:07:54Many things have happened in that time.
00:07:57I've buried two wives and five children.
00:08:00I've fought all kinds of wars.
00:08:04I've seen the downfall of kings, queens, and popes.
00:08:0725 years.
00:08:09But I've built something that will last 25 centuries.
00:08:14Gentlemen, what do I have still to do?
00:08:18Pacify Flanders.
00:08:20Exden our empire through Asia.
00:08:24Conquer England.
00:08:27Wipe all heretics from the face of the earth.
00:08:39The Spanish Embassy in London has been closed down.
00:08:42War is imminent.
00:08:43I hate wars.
00:08:45They're for barbarians, not gentlemen.
00:08:47It is the only way we can get rid of Elizabeth.
00:08:49On that, we disagree, Mendoza, my friend.
00:08:51Look at the evidence, for God's sake.
00:08:53Your plot was aborted before he was born.
00:08:56We made a mistake with the agent.
00:08:57It won't happen again.
00:08:59You intend to insist.
00:09:02Because Spain can't help you now.
00:09:05We have just recruited a very promising young man for our cause.
00:09:09His name is Babington.
00:09:11He won't fail.
00:09:13You say that very confidently.
00:09:15It's true.
00:09:17He's young, intelligent, and passionate.
00:09:20He'll succeed.
00:09:23We'll have to get the bad news to Mary.
00:09:32Mary.
00:09:45No!
00:09:47No!
00:09:49No!
00:09:49No!
00:09:50No!
00:09:51No!
00:09:51No!
00:09:52No!
00:09:54No!
00:09:56No!
00:10:04You failed me.
00:10:05I assure you that nothing and no one has entered or left there.
00:10:13I don't know what to think or who to believe.
00:10:17They said it clearly.
00:10:19Your death and Mary should reign.
00:10:23That doesn't mean she was involved.
00:10:25She has no communication with anyone.
00:10:27And even less so from now on.
00:10:29I agree with Lord Cecil.
00:10:32Throckmorton's confession implicates her directly.
00:10:35Confession made under torture.
00:10:46Red-hot irons, fingernails torn out.
00:10:49They do that to them.
00:10:51No, that's the least of what they do.
00:10:55Very well, Countess.
00:10:57You may go.
00:10:59I forgive errors.
00:11:00Because I do not forget negligence.
00:11:08Majesty.
00:11:14What's worrying you?
00:11:17I don't know.
00:11:20I have a feeling our lives could be about to change forever.
00:11:25Can't waste time with these intrigues and conspiracies.
00:11:30Get rid of your cousin and you will have freed yourself of the problem.
00:11:35I have told you a thousand times I will not execute her without conclusive proof.
00:11:40She has twice tried to kill you.
00:11:44What further proof do you want?
00:11:45The death of a queen is no trivial matter.
00:11:48And while I'm still alive and Mary is confined, the rest is speculation.
00:11:52Mary is no longer queen.
00:11:55Her son is king now.
00:11:57Don't insist.
00:12:00Bring me the whole plot.
00:12:04Now.
00:12:05Forgive me.
00:12:07I need to rest.
00:12:33I need to have Mary transferred from Sheffield Castle.
00:12:41I'm sure it will not be for long.
00:12:43Besides, I can visit you there more often without the presence of my wife.
00:12:50She isn't the one behind all this, is she?
00:12:55Definitely not.
00:12:58Circumstances have changed at court.
00:13:00My wife has fallen into disgrace with the queen.
00:13:03Does she no longer satisfy her sufficiently?
00:13:07Mary, please.
00:13:08Bess has many faults, but she would never take another woman into her bed.
00:13:12How little you know of what a spiteful woman is capable of.
00:13:16She would do anything to hurt us.
00:13:18Anything but that.
00:13:19I've never believed that rumor.
00:13:23She is ambitious, warped, and mediocre.
00:13:26The most explosive mixture.
00:13:28She also had the impertinence to marry one of your daughters to the brother of my late
00:13:32Darnley.
00:13:33May he rest in peace.
00:13:34She's always wanted to win Elizabeth's favor in court.
00:13:37Now the queen has repudiated her.
00:13:40God takes revenge on my enemies.
00:13:43But that doesn't make her less dangerous.
00:13:45Forget her.
00:13:46You have many people who love you and are fighting for you.
00:13:50And you have me.
00:13:56I had you.
00:13:58And they took you far away from me, Earl Marshall.
00:14:01But this has given me more power and time to help you.
00:14:07And it has taken me away from my wife.
00:14:10She's unbearable.
00:14:18I thought I would leave this place for freedom.
00:14:22Or for this scaffold.
00:14:24And yet I'm going to another prison and to nothing.
00:14:27Don't torture yourself anymore.
00:14:29For the love of God.
00:14:31What is Tudbury like?
00:14:33It is a place we barely use.
00:14:35It's cold and damp.
00:14:37But I should do everything possible to prepare it so that you are comfortable.
00:14:43I owe you so much, my friend.
00:14:47So much.
00:14:48You'll be well cared for there.
00:14:50Amnas Poulet, the governor of Jersey, is in charge.
00:14:53Another jailer.
00:14:54He is a good man.
00:14:56A Puritan with strong principles.
00:15:00You won't get him to fall in love with you.
00:15:03I love you, Mary.
00:15:06Don't turn this into a farewell.
00:15:08We will see each other again.
00:15:09Of course.
00:15:11And I will see you reign again.
00:15:13And free forever.
00:15:16Madam.
00:15:17Everything is ready.
00:15:20Take care.
00:15:21I love you.
00:15:34Those damn Spaniards are hard nuts to crack.
00:15:36But I've killed over a hundred.
00:15:40Yes, over a hundred.
00:15:42Some with my own hands.
00:15:44Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:15:45Ooh.
00:15:47Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:15:48Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:16:12I bring two gifts for you.
00:16:14One from King Philip of Spain.
00:16:17The other from our Lord God.
00:16:22My God.
00:16:25My God.
00:16:26Have mercy of my soul.
00:16:28My God.
00:16:30Have pity of these poor people.
00:16:35With the death of William of Orange, the revolt in the Low Countries has lost all its strength.
00:16:39We cannot allow it.
00:16:41We must maintain the points of unrest that weaken Spain.
00:16:44Any ideas?
00:16:46Morris of Nassau, the late Williams brother, has asked for financial help to continue the rebellion.
00:16:50What do those idiots think?
00:16:52That gold reproduces itself?
00:16:54A little while ago our reserves were non-existent.
00:16:57We were bankrupt.
00:16:58No, no.
00:16:58He has an ingenious plan for a guerrilla warfare, which might produce results.
00:17:03We should help them.
00:17:04We are the next country to be invaded.
00:17:07Our Corsairs are harming their overseas economy, but it is not enough.
00:17:11Those laws are horrible.
00:17:15What makes you so sure about his attack?
00:17:18Well, they've already broken off diplomatic relations.
00:17:21King Philip is building the largest fleet ever known in order to take England and rule
00:17:25the Atlantic.
00:17:26They're already calling it the Invincible Armada.
00:17:29Invincible?
00:17:30We'll see about that.
00:17:32How far advanced is the construction of that fleet?
00:17:35When will it be ready?
00:17:36It's hard to say.
00:17:38Two years at the most, but it's growing each week.
00:17:41That's a lot of time if we move quickly.
00:17:44Lord Cecil, prepare a military alliance treaty with the United Provinces of the Little Countries,
00:17:50and get John Dee to organize an urgent meeting with Raleigh.
00:17:54We'll need more Spanish gold.
00:17:56No, that could mean a head-on confrontation.
00:17:58There will be no more half measures.
00:18:00I want my enemy to know whom he is up against.
00:18:03Philip won't find excuses to scares.
00:18:06You need the most precise information possible.
00:18:09Whoever strikes first gets the upper hand.
00:18:12Does that mean we'll send more money to the Dutch?
00:18:13No.
00:18:15For now, only men and ammunition.
00:18:18They are easier replaced than gold.
00:18:20Brilliant strategy.
00:18:22That's what I was thinking.
00:18:24Let's find a krill coming from a woman's lips.
00:18:27While we keep the war going in the Low Countries, we shall make our coasts impregnable.
00:18:32That is essential, Majesty.
00:18:34But don't forget, we are not owners of the entire coastline.
00:18:39I haven't forgotten.
00:18:41What has become of our good Gerard?
00:18:44He was arrested and executed.
00:18:47Those barbarians dismembered him.
00:18:50May God have it in his glory.
00:18:53Where's he pay the reward?
00:18:55No, Majesty.
00:18:5725,000 crowns that we have saved.
00:19:00And an enemy less.
00:19:03Mendoza, you see how it's not that difficult?
00:19:06Majesty, I...
00:19:09Elizabeth is better protected now.
00:19:13But waltzing them seems to be everywhere.
00:19:16Oh, yes.
00:19:16I know that he even has spies here.
00:19:20But don't worry.
00:19:21The end is as close as that of England's.
00:19:26King James VI of Scotland.
00:19:33Majesty, it is an honour to meet you at last.
00:19:35You are far more handsome than I was told.
00:19:39You must be in need of some refreshment.
00:19:42Not a while ago, I had another letter from her.
00:19:46Would you like news of your mother?
00:19:48I have no mother.
00:19:50The person you are holding in confinement is no more than a conspirator who killed my father.
00:19:55Harsh words against the woman who gave you life.
00:19:57Yes, she gave me life.
00:19:59And then filled it with pain, solitude and aggression.
00:20:03Her only feeling towards me is to take away the throne that is mine by right.
00:20:07She had that right before.
00:20:09Yes, and showed that she was unfit to exercise it.
00:20:14The comments about your character do you justice, as does your facility with words.
00:20:19A king's capacity for decision is as important as his preparation and skill in communicating, both with his collaborators and
00:20:28with his subjects.
00:20:30To what do I owe this invitation?
00:20:32As you know, we are headed for a war with Spain. That worries us.
00:20:38You have gradually been making England stronger and more powerful.
00:20:42We have been doing that.
00:20:44But if, God forbid, the Spaniards were to defeat us, they wouldn't stop at London.
00:20:50You are insinuating that?
00:20:52That they would continue on to Edinburgh.
00:21:00King Philip would overthrow you, put your mother on the throne.
00:21:03What makes you think that?
00:21:06With a weak, frivolous queen, he could do as he pleased without having to prolong the war against us.
00:21:13And I suppose you have already thought of alternatives to offer me.
00:21:16Indeed.
00:21:17We can draw up a mutual defence treaty between both countries.
00:21:22Historically, treaties between Scotland and England have always benefited you in an unacceptable way.
00:21:27This one would benefit both of us.
00:21:30What are you offering in exchange for my support?
00:21:33Didn't you hear the queen?
00:21:35England would lend you support if the Spaniards decided to extend their battle along the Scottish borders.
00:21:41The Spaniards are not such fools. They would never attack Scotland first.
00:21:45If Philip were to defeat you, God forbid, he would name my mother Queen of England and agree a lasting
00:21:53suitable peace between both countries.
00:21:56A moment ago you didn't have a mother.
00:21:58Because a moment ago you hadn't lost the war.
00:22:02You are far more intelligent than I expected.
00:22:05They won't attack us.
00:22:10If you sign the treaty, I will re-establish the Stuart line of succession.
00:22:17That is, you will be my heir.
00:22:22Put it in writing and I will sign it.
00:22:25Here it is.
00:22:44You know, with your youth and my experience, we'd be unbeatable.
00:22:49What are you suggesting?
00:22:50We would make a perfect marriage.
00:22:53You flatter me, Majesty.
00:22:55Let us drink to this momentous occasion.
00:23:00To our two great countries.
00:23:03And to us.
00:23:17Oh, she's clever.
00:23:19And fast.
00:23:21She got her way.
00:23:23James.
00:23:24She'll never marry.
00:23:25She'll never have any children.
00:23:28And James will be the next King of England.
00:23:33Oh, get to that point, for God's sake.
00:23:36There's a young Catholic called Babington.
00:23:40This time I'll implicate Mary in such a way that Elizabeth will have no choice but to execute her.
00:23:54Don't you see that the arrangement between my son and my cousin makes me totally dispensable?
00:24:00That isn't true.
00:24:03Circumstances in which your son has lived must have confused him.
00:24:07But I am still his mother.
00:24:09His mother and the Queen.
00:24:14Now I understand why Elizabeth refuses to have children.
00:24:18Bring me paper and ink.
00:24:24Right.
00:24:29I'm going to draw up my will.
00:24:32Madam.
00:24:33Calm yourself.
00:24:35Throwing up your will does not hasten your end.
00:24:40As you wish.
00:24:42I.
00:24:43Mary Stuart.
00:24:46Queen of Scotland.
00:24:48Widowed Queen Consul to the Kingdom of France.
00:24:52And legitimate heir to the throne of England.
00:24:56Bequeath all my monarchical rights to one single person.
00:25:03His Majesty King Philip.
00:25:06We will know how to use it for the greater glory of our Lord God.
00:25:16Is that all?
00:25:18Validate it with my seal and put the date.
00:25:2716th of June.
00:25:301586.
00:25:31It is done.
00:25:34The poet sent to the King of Spain.
00:25:36And when we are certain it is in his power.
00:25:39We claim it to the four winds.
00:25:43I want the whole world to know.
00:25:46That will be done.
00:25:52Majesty.
00:25:53The visitor you are expecting.
00:25:55I am Anthony Babington.
00:25:57At your service.
00:25:58I have been waiting impatiently for you.
00:26:01You are welcome.
00:26:02Thank you madam.
00:26:07Did you have any difficulty getting here?
00:26:09Not at all.
00:26:10I passed myself off as a Scottish traveller who wished to see his Queen.
00:26:14I am at your disposal for whatever you need.
00:26:17For the good of Scotland and England.
00:26:20Elizabeth must die.
00:26:22It is the only alternative and may God forgive me.
00:26:25Forgive my boldness.
00:26:26But would it not be better to wait for direct help from Philip?
00:26:29It has to be now.
00:26:32Moreover, as you know, I have just made Philip a participant in our victory.
00:26:36Or beneficiary in our defeat.
00:26:38Her death cannot be postponed.
00:26:41You can rely on it majesty.
00:26:42It shall be done immediately.
00:26:44Do you know the risk?
00:26:46And I accept it.
00:26:47His holiness has promised paradise to whoever puts an end to the reign of the heretic Elizabeth.
00:26:52But even were that not so, I do it for Scotland and for my Queen.
00:26:59Your blessing.
00:27:01Majesty, please.
00:27:02I beg your blessing.
00:27:05God be with you.
00:27:10Undoubtedly I shall not survive after the assassination.
00:27:13God forbid.
00:27:16Go with him, Mr. Babington.
00:27:18God save the Queen.
00:27:26Let us pray for this young man.
00:27:30And that he may fulfill his difficult mission.
00:28:04rethinkable Elisabeth.
00:28:06Cancel mere ghosts.
00:28:07God save the Queen!
00:28:07I choose God save Hush.
00:28:10He wanted to stab the Queen!
00:28:16Why did you wait so long?
00:28:18I had to make it look credible.
00:28:19He had stabbed me. It couldn't have been more real.
00:28:22I assure you, you're not in the slightest of danger.
00:28:24I'm not so sure.
00:28:34What is your name?
00:28:36Anthony Babington.
00:28:39Babington?
00:28:41Why did you try to kill me?
00:28:44Because you are not the legitimate owner of the throne of England.
00:28:49You say that very confidently.
00:28:52Who is, according to you?
00:28:58Answer if you don't want your head to roll right here.
00:29:01That is something I do not fear.
00:29:05Then answer.
00:29:06Answer.
00:29:20Answer.
00:29:33Answer.
00:29:34Answer.
00:29:35Answer.
00:29:36Answer.
00:29:36Answer.
00:29:37Answer.
00:29:38Answer.
00:29:43Get him to sign his confession and execute him.
00:30:12This is my throne.
00:30:16Answer.
00:30:17Answer.
00:30:17No one shall take it from me while I live.
00:30:21Not the king of Spain, not Mary Stuart, not the devil himself, if he were to present himself
00:30:31here.
00:30:33I shall protect England from all her enemies.
00:30:37God save the queen.
00:30:40God save the queen!
00:30:50Lord Cecil, I rest my cousin, to whom I've shown so much generosity.
00:31:00Yes, Majesty.
00:31:39This trial is a farce.
00:31:42As I am queen, only God can judge me.
00:31:44Save your grand eloquence, madam, you are no longer queen of anything.
00:31:49One is born and dies a queen, even if my throne was stolen from me.
00:31:54You calling your son a thief?
00:31:57No, he is just a toy in my enemy's hands.
00:32:01God is my witness, Lord Cecil, and you will not escape his judgment.
00:32:05Please, Lord Cecil, let us proceed.
00:32:10This is the evidence, Your Lordships, Anthony Babington's confession.
00:32:18The motive aggravates the crime because it was the accused's intention to usurp the throne
00:32:24and proclaim herself Queen of England and Scotland.
00:32:31Incriminating letters in her own handwriting to Anthony Babington and His Royal Highness, King Philip, King of Spain,
00:32:47who is, lest we forget, at war with our country.
00:32:53Very serious accusations.
00:32:56What have you to say, madam?
00:32:58I shall only answer to God.
00:33:00Yes, but unfortunately, God is not presiding.
00:33:03It is their Lordships who will be delivering judgment.
00:33:06You are already condemned.
00:33:08Yes, well, that may very well be so, but you are the one sternly accused.
00:33:13Would you wish to say anything in your defence, madame?
00:33:17My reasons are profound, and I have acted in legitimate defence.
00:33:22Legitimate defence?
00:33:25Tell me, has Queen Elizabeth, by any chance, ever tried to assassinate you?
00:33:31Worse.
00:33:32She has submitted me to a slow agony of harassment, frustration and deprivation of freedom.
00:33:39This is outrageous.
00:33:41Is it not truer that when you were expelled from your own country, she offered you protection and shelter?
00:33:51If you call shelter being gelled for over fifteen years while my friends were murdered,
00:33:56I was held incommunicado, and this whole plot was woven to us to kill me legally.
00:34:01A luxurious castle like Sheffield, with trusted friends and freedom to ride, to play music,
00:34:11to enjoy endless activities, to receive friends.
00:34:17You call this incommunicado?
00:34:21No.
00:34:21Throughout my life, I have been harassed, humiliated, betrayed and deposed simply for defending my throne and my religion.
00:34:30Queen Elizabeth does the same, but then she's never been complicit in someone's murder.
00:34:35How can you be so cynical?
00:34:37My cousin's throne is built on a mountain of corpses.
00:34:40Murder in your language!
00:34:41Damn me, have you no shame!
00:34:43I am the Queen of Scotland.
00:34:45I represent my country, and it is my duty to defend it until the last drop of my blood.
00:34:51Your Lordships, I, with great respect, I see no reason to prolong this trial.
00:34:56The evidence is irrefutable, and her attitude allows for no doubt.
00:35:06You will not achieve anything by killing me.
00:35:10If being Queen of Scotland and professing the Catholic faith makes me guilty, then I certainly am.
00:35:17Guilty! Guilty!
00:35:20Happy your Lordships, deliver your verdict.
00:35:24She shows not thy slightest sign of repentance.
00:35:27Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
00:35:53Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
00:35:57Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
00:35:57Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty! Guilty
00:35:57Her execution.
00:36:02You have hated me from the beginning and have always wanted to see me dead.
00:36:06Why, Lord Cecil?
00:36:07You are mistaken.
00:36:09I hate only what you represent.
00:36:12A threat to the treachery of Elizabeth.
00:36:15Against a government of despotism and terror.
00:36:23You were simply an obstacle to my country's advance.
00:36:29You represent an outdated religion with a corrupt and degenerate pope who has a legion of fanatics and, well, don't
00:36:40think.
00:36:41The Reformation is a heresy and God will punish you for the crimes you commit.
00:36:47Yeah, so many crimes have been committed in his name.
00:36:50I doubt a few more will trouble him.
00:36:53You don't believe in God?
00:36:55I believe in England and in Queen Elizabeth and I don't need anything else.
00:37:01You are condemned.
00:37:02No, no.
00:37:03I think then we both are.
00:37:05But then if your God suddenly appears, perhaps we'll both be saved.
00:37:08I mean, it's what you believe, isn't it?
00:37:10That he is always watching.
00:37:14Is he really going to allow the atrocity of seeing your beautiful head all blooded and lying on a scaffold
00:37:27floor?
00:37:28If that is so, it is because he prefers I serve him as a martyr.
00:37:36So be it.
00:37:41I shall finally stop hoping.
00:37:43I am free.
00:37:46I am free.
00:37:48I am free.
00:38:10I am free.
00:38:10I am free.
00:38:13I am free.
00:38:16I am free.
00:38:20I am free.
00:38:22I am free.
00:38:24I am free.
00:38:26I am free.
00:38:26I am free.
00:38:27I am free.
00:38:28I am free.
00:38:29I am free.
00:38:32I am free.
00:38:33I am free.
00:38:34I am free.
00:38:35I am free.
00:38:36I am free.
00:38:37I am free.
00:38:37I am free.
00:38:58What are you doing here?
00:39:00It would be better to think of all the reasons before taking that tone.
00:39:07At this stage, I have little left to think.
00:39:11Leave us.
00:39:13My Majesty.
00:39:14I said, leave us.
00:39:21I asked you a question.
00:39:24Where have you come?
00:39:27Do you wish to enjoy my pain more closely?
00:39:29Your pain doesn't satisfy me.
00:39:32Of course.
00:39:34It's not enough.
00:39:36You have come to see me die.
00:39:38If I had wanted your death, you'd have ceased to be here long ago.
00:39:42You prefer to torture me with confinement.
00:39:47To come to this.
00:39:48You left me no option.
00:39:50Is it regret or manis?
00:39:52It is weariness.
00:39:54So much violence and betrayal.
00:39:58I don't have the energy for so much hate.
00:40:01The hate that you generate.
00:40:04I should be reigning in Scotland.
00:40:07And you have destroyed the best years of my life.
00:40:11You destroyed them.
00:40:12With your mistakes and frivolities.
00:40:16Conspiring while you clung to your religion just to destroy me.
00:40:19You have to be.
00:40:24Protestantism.
00:40:26Catholicism.
00:40:28What does it matter now?
00:40:32Ever since I arrived in Scotland, you wanted to impose your will on me.
00:40:37Through violence.
00:40:39Through deceit.
00:40:39And betrayal.
00:40:41You never treated me as an equal.
00:40:43Because you never were.
00:40:46You and I are as different as Scotland and England.
00:40:51Between my subjects and yours, there is a generation of education, culture, refinement.
00:40:57That is why you did not want me on the throne.
00:41:00So that Scotland shouldn't grow in advance with the help of God in my preparation.
00:41:05This conversation is leading nowhere.
00:41:09Ask for forgiveness and you won't die.
00:41:14Forgiveness.
00:41:16For ruining my life.
00:41:19For taking away my kingdom.
00:41:21For separating me from my loved ones.
00:41:23Forgiveness.
00:41:24Oh, let me die with dignity.
00:41:27So hard to understand that I don't want your death.
00:41:31It's a strange way to show it.
00:41:36You became a danger to our unity and to the crown.
00:41:42Don't be obstinate.
00:41:45All I need is that you ask forgiveness.
00:41:48What alternative do you offer me?
00:41:52My humiliation with even more years of confinement until I rot away between four wars?
00:41:57I am in the middle of a war with Spain.
00:42:01Your allies.
00:42:04With a little patience you may achieve your objectives.
00:42:08But alive.
00:42:11Achieve them alive.
00:42:12Don't be stupid.
00:42:15I don't believe you.
00:42:18You are waiting for my humiliation.
00:42:20And when I am at your feet, you will sign the sentence and moreover my dignity would have been destroyed.
00:42:26Of Cecil's advice perhaps.
00:42:29As you wish.
00:42:31Arrogant and rash to the end.
00:42:35In the end is my beginning.
00:42:40Yes.
00:42:43Your greatest mistake is that you got more involved as a woman than as a queen.
00:42:50That is why you didn't win this battle.
00:42:53And yours is that you have lived without a soul.
00:42:57And that in order to be a queen at any price, you have forgotten to be a woman.
00:43:03A mother, a wife, a friend.
00:43:05And even to be human.
00:43:09You live on a cloud.
00:43:12I came here to prevent you ending up in the hands of the executioner.
00:43:18I haven't been able to convince you.
00:43:21I told you.
00:43:23You can take nothing from me but my life.
00:43:28The martyr queen.
00:43:31What fantasy.
00:43:35The virgin queen.
00:43:38What sarcasm.
00:43:42Your god and mine know that I have truly tried.
00:43:48My dear cousin.
00:43:53My end will be my beginning.
00:43:55and I will keep them playing.
00:44:07What are you doing?
00:44:08My dear friend.
00:44:08This is ΗboroughWing.
00:44:09It is my mother.
00:44:11It is my father.
00:44:14My father.
00:44:14This is my father.
00:44:14My father.
00:44:16I don't know almighty.
00:44:17I don't know where it is.
00:44:17My mother.
00:44:22I just have gotten all the way he wants.
00:44:23I just have a little bit drugiej in auminatingcommunica game.
00:44:23I was learning.
00:44:34I don't know.
00:45:05Majesty, you're going to get cold.
00:45:27Has it happened?
00:45:29Not yet, Majesty.
00:45:31It will be at dawn.
00:45:36What ails you, Majesty?
00:45:38It's all insane.
00:45:41I hardly knew her, and now I'm hurting deep inside.
00:45:46That's logical, sir.
00:45:47She gave you life.
00:45:48She is your mother.
00:45:49I was forced to ignore her, almost hate her.
00:45:54And now I feel that part of my life is leaving with her.
00:45:57You should not feel guilty.
00:45:58And I don't.
00:46:01But does the sacrifice make any sense?
00:46:05Don't torture yourself, sir.
00:46:07You are the king, and she has been the victim of her fate.
00:46:11It's disgusting.
00:46:13All my life I've been accompanied by bitterness and mysteries.
00:46:19Go and bring me news as soon as possible.
00:46:21Yes, Majesty.
00:46:38Elizabeth enjoying her triumph.
00:46:42The things that damned hyenas are capable of.
00:46:47She wanted to be my wife, and she wanted to be my wife, mother.
00:47:17Have a son.
00:47:33Have a good day.
00:47:35Have a good day.
00:47:52It is time.
00:47:55I am ready.
00:48:00Madam.
00:48:05Don't cry dear Mary.
00:48:08Be glad my suffering is about to come to an end.
00:48:12I am about to commend my soul to God.
00:48:16Pray for me every day to the end of my life.
00:48:57Time will erase your name.
00:49:02I will erase your followers and you take your own son's treachery to the grave.
00:49:10I will erase your love.
00:49:13I will erase your love.
00:49:17I will erase your love.
00:49:54Mary, we, Elizabeth I of England, sentenced you to death for the crimes of high treason, criminal conspiracy and attempted
00:50:07regicide.
00:50:08For which you have been tried and found guilty.
00:50:14That is untrue.
00:50:16Only God can judge me.
00:50:18Sentence signed and sealed by Elizabeth I of England on the day of yesterday, February the 7th, on the year
00:50:28of our Lord, 1587.
00:50:35Lord, have pity on those who, blinded by the evil that surrounds us, call the work of your church into
00:50:42doubt.
00:50:43And I also ask you to guide my son, James, who has been educated into Protestantism, to the true path
00:50:51of the Catholic faith.
00:50:52And I also beg you to illuminate my cousin, Queen Elizabeth, so that she may continue her reign serving you
00:50:59properly,
00:51:00instead of committing cruel crimes like the one she is about to perpetrate.
00:51:04Please, Majesty, repent and we'll put an end to this.
00:51:10That is what you and that bastard heretic of her cousin would like.
00:51:14Don't be an accomplice to your own death.
00:51:17By cutting off my head, you are not only killing a queen, you are also killing a symbol.
00:51:23It is in your hands to avoid that.
00:51:30Catholics around the world will not forgive this aggression.
00:51:34They will rise up in arms and destroy these islands like the plague that God sent to punish the Egyptians.
00:51:43Proceed.
00:51:48Tell me if I ask you that I died a queen, like a true Catholic and a real Scot.
00:51:54I sorrow my life, I will do so.
00:51:56Proceed.
00:51:59I forgive you with all my heart.
00:52:02Thank you for your clemency, madam.
00:52:05May I?
00:52:06I want my pearls in my final journey.
00:52:08And they are our salary, madam.
00:52:10You will earn more my way.
00:52:15This is double the value of the necklace.
00:52:19Thank you, madam.
00:52:27Don't cry.
00:52:29Tears must not prevent you from seeing the injustice you are about to witness.
00:52:34Only as a martyr shall I help my people.
00:52:37Mother.
00:52:38For the love of God.
00:52:40Mother.
00:53:52To you, God, I commend my soul.
00:54:00To you, God, I commend my soul.
00:54:08Adios, adios, domine, humanus.
00:54:11She left me no option.
00:54:14Humanus, adios, domine.
00:54:35Bring me a mirror.
00:54:40But, Majesty...
00:54:42Calm yourself.
00:54:45I've never been surprised by my face.
00:55:01Death is so disgusting.
00:55:07We humans are so ungainly.
00:55:18How fair is you, Majesty?
00:55:21John...
00:55:24You are going to survive your queen.
00:55:28For once.
00:55:30I wish I were mistaken in my prediction.
00:55:35However, I believe I will follow you soon.
00:55:40Agony is so long.
00:55:44The memory of my life is so short.
00:55:48May you be accompanied with the knowledge of being the greatest queen in the history of England?
00:55:54I don't know.
00:55:59I won a lost battle.
00:56:02They say the storm helped.
00:56:05If I had nothing to do with it, how is it a victory?
00:56:09Now is not the time.
00:56:12Do not allow these memories to torment your spirit.
00:56:17Shall they meet with all of those that have gone before me?
00:56:25Cut so deep to kill someone you love.
00:56:30A monarch's reign is fraught with the severest of convictions, Majesty.
00:56:38You taught me that theory well.
00:56:42But you didn't give me the underdote for so much pay.
00:56:47That is not exactly true.
00:56:49I spent many years trying to put you in touch with the angels.
00:56:55How could you think such a thing?
00:56:57I would have only have spoken with God.
00:57:01A sense of humour is further proof of your intelligence.
00:57:06Rest, madam.
00:57:09Rest.
00:57:21I don't know.
00:57:25I don't know.
00:57:31Shall I call the door?
00:57:33I don't know.
00:57:33No.
00:57:35I'd better.
00:57:39Give me a drink.
00:57:50What a great lie, all this is.
00:57:58Ambition.
00:58:02Hatred.
00:58:04Death.
00:58:08Suffering.
00:58:13To defend what?
00:58:16To arrive where?
00:58:19That is the greatest deception.
00:58:27I would give all my kingdom.
00:58:35Just...
00:58:39Just...
00:58:40Just...
00:58:42To what majesty?
00:58:45To live.
00:58:49To live.
00:58:53No, God teaches us to die.
00:58:59That is why we do not know...
00:59:05How to live.
00:59:08Yes.
00:59:14Look.
00:59:17Ten...
00:59:19You...
