00:13Welcome one and all to the second volume of our web series Once Upon a Time in the Sims Medieval.
00:19You will discover how the Sims Studio have created a realistic medieval environment
00:24as we take a look at the decor, the professions available and the creation of those authentic medieval sounds
00:31plunge into the world of Once Upon a Time in the Sims Medieval.
00:37In the last episode we discovered how the Sims Medieval game came about
00:41with its realistic atmosphere and colourful characters.
00:50Now we continue our journey into the land of The Sims Medieval to discover more.
00:55My name is Dave Motke, I'm an assistant producer for The Sims Medieval.
00:58The first thing that we did to define the visual style of the universe was actually sit down
01:03and just come up with a list of all of our preconceived notions and what we expect out
01:07of the medieval genre.
01:09Me, personally, I've done a lot of research into ancient beard growing techniques, irregular
01:15bathing, doing a lot of raids on my co-workers' cubicles, you know, things that barbarians
01:21would do.
01:21I feel like it's really important that I live that in order to make this game well.
01:26We actually took many inspirations for the architectural and the decor style for our game, from French,
01:33we had Eastern Europe, and you can see little bits and pieces of that all over the game.
01:38Ten professions from the period helped The Sims to blend into their new environment.
01:42So as well as being monarch, why not try being a knight, physician, wizard, priest, spy, bard,
01:48merchant, or blacksmith?
01:51Choosing the professions was really tough.
01:54We probably had a little over 30 to start with.
01:57And after playing and living with those professions for a while, we started to kind of pare those
02:02down.
02:03And we ended up with ten professions.
02:05And I think what's really cool about those professions is they're all widely unique.
02:09But don't worry, The Sims medieval is by no means all work and no play.
02:13Well, to keep everything funny, our real inspiration was The Sims franchise itself.
02:17So when a physician is throwing leeches onto their patient, it's not a bad experience.
02:22It's a funny experience.
02:23When you launch somebody into the pit of judgment to be destroyed, it's not a bad experience.
02:28We want to keep you laughing throughout the whole time.
02:34One of the key ingredients to getting lost in this new Sims medieval world is Simlish,
02:38the official language of The Sims.
02:40A special medieval dialect has even been devised for the new game by the studio.
02:44Hi, my name's Jill Johnson.
02:45I'm the art content producer for The Sims Medieval.
02:48So our audio team did a lot of research with old English style literary professors and they
02:54also took some inspiration from the more fictional, really ancient languages like Klingons from
02:59Star Trek they took inspiration from and some of the token languages and yeah, went from there.
03:04Artie managed to sneak into the recording studios to see the actors at work in this new Simlish tongue.
03:10As you can see, these guys really are ancient language experts.
03:13Check out this gauly scene where the physician treats his patient with leeches.
03:16Oh, here it is in classic modern day Simlish.
03:19Orbu Kinez, Missile.
03:23Missile Fripp.
03:25And now an old Simlish.
03:28Parsayale, Dovrim, Corbe.
03:33And this authentic middle-aged universe wouldn't be complete without some good old medieval music.
03:39Thank goodness that the sound team at The Sims Studio were able to find enough minstrels
03:43and live players to create the original soundtrack of the game.
03:47John Devney did an incredible job in terms of making a really, really compelling score
03:51that very much felt like it had come from a different time period.
03:54We wanted the music to sound right for the world of the game.
03:57The end result is something special, really transporting you to the Middle Ages.
04:01In fact, it makes you feel like having a mighty feast and dancing the night away.
04:04And now we close the second ancient volume of Once Upon a Time in The Sims Medieval.
04:09Join us next time as we take a trip down the catwalk of the Middle Ages
04:13to check out the latest fashions of the period.
04:15We'll also be bringing you more information about the gameplay itself
04:19and see just how talented all the new characters are.
04:22So, for the sake of your kingdom, miss not the next ancient volume of Once Upon a Time in The
04:27Sims Medieval.
04:37We'll see you today back in the next week.
04:40We'll see you next time.
