A mesmerising crocus display, designed by BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Nick Bailey, has burst into flower in Leicester as a tribute to the city’s rich cultural heritage.Bailey, who is also director of the University of Leicester’s Botanic Garden, gathered 60 green-fingered volunteers for an ambitious three‑day planting effort last autumn, planting 40,000 crocus bulbs in the shape of a paisley motif.

00:14We did it as a celebration of the incredible cultural diversity of Leicester. The pattern
00:21that I'm sat amongst is in fact a huge paisley pattern which of course originated in Mesopotamia,
00:27made its way into India, into Southeast Asia, into Europe and really so it's a pattern that is shared by
00:33the world.
00:44Now of course crocuses are very much the harbingers of spring and what better way to
00:50start a new season than with such a glorious display of colour.
