00:04This is the stealth playthrough of the Golden Cat Mission from Dishonored.
00:07Here to walk you through it are co-creative directors, Rafael Colantonio and Harvey Smith.
00:13Hello, I'm Harvey Smith and I'm with Rafael Colantonio and we are the co-creative directors of Dishonored.
00:21Dishonored is a first-person action game where you play the role of a supernatural assassin.
00:25You play Corvo Atano, who is the bodyguard of the Empress, the royal protector, and he is at the beginning
00:32of the game falsely accused of her murder.
00:34There are many ways to play the game. This is one of the premises of the game.
00:37So we provide a set of tools to the player. We provide an environment which is open and with various
00:44ways to get inside the buildings.
00:47And the simulation is here to allow the player to explore and to experiment with the mechanics.
00:54And really it's up to the player to play its own way and it's up to the systems to resolve
00:59the player's intention.
01:03All right, the mission in Dishonored that we're showing you today takes place in a bathhouse called the Golden Cat.
01:10And so even in the middle of the terrible plague that is gripping the city of Dunwall, the corrupt aristocrats
01:15are partying like there's no tomorrow.
01:18And in the mission today you have to track down the Pendletons, Lords Custis and Morgan Pendleton, who are corrupt
01:25members of Parliament.
01:25We're going to play this demo twice. The first playthrough is going to be stealthy, as non-lethal as possible.
01:35One of the things about Dishonored is the player is highly mobile.
01:39So there's not only, you know, sprint and slide and climb and lean, things like that that you'd expect in
01:44a first-person action game with a stealth component.
01:47But we also have supernatural powers like Blink that he was using to make a short-range teleport across the
01:53balcony.
02:03Here we see the player collecting a rune. He's using the heart to locate those runes.
02:09Those runes are used to upgrade your powers.
02:23There are multiple ways to infiltrate a building. In this case, we believe there is eight or nine ways in.
02:30You could go through the main door or through one of the open windows or breaker windows or behind the
02:37building.
02:37There's also various conduits, like if you possess a rat or if you possess a fish, you can go through
02:44the water.
02:45In this case, in this playthrough, we are going to show how we infiltrate the building by possessing a fish.
02:57You can pick up lots of little story bits by watching the characters in Eves dropping, but here the player
03:02is looking for a way inside the golden cat.
03:05I have to keep this position. He says to bring a bottle, I bring a bottle. He says to bring
03:10fruit, I bring fruit. He says to undress, I undress.

04:02based on the conversation that we heard
04:07whenever you enter this mission
04:09the position of the Pendleton Lords
04:12is dynamic
04:13so there are several different places they can be
04:17you can see the level of alertness
04:19of the AI
04:20so in this case
04:21there were like those two little indicators
04:23on the head of the woman
04:25because she almost saw you
04:26and that's a feedback
04:28so that the player can know
04:30if he's currently well hidden
04:31or if he's going to be detected
04:51here's another note in the world
04:53that also duplicates the information
04:55that the player gained by eavesdropping earlier
04:57so he now knows where each of the two Lords Pendleton are
05:02here the player is peeking through a keyhole
05:04and eavesdropping on a guard
05:06and the madame of the golden cat
05:10you can notice that the sound is muffled behind closed doors
05:15and the sound actually propagates based on the geometry
05:19which is really interesting for stealth gameplay
05:22because it helps you locate very well where the NPCs are around you
05:47here the player is choking out madame prudence
05:51and taking her key
05:52which is the master key to the golden cat
05:54he could have just taken the key and left
05:55but instead he wanted to loot the room
05:57so he left her unconscious
05:59so he could have snuck by without alerting her
06:01he could have killed her
06:03or he could leave her choked out on the floor
06:06it's all options
06:29this is fucking ridiculous as shit
06:37seen anybody with signs of a sickness?
06:39talk to that nice girl again
06:41the one I told you about
06:42you realize you're at the golden cat, right?
06:45yeah, but she's different
06:47she really likes me

06:59you're supposed to be on duty
07:00given the fact that the player can approach the game
07:02in a variety of different ways
07:04very violently or stealthy
07:06killing everyone or literally killing no one
07:09as they play through
07:09it feels very different when you play the game each time
07:13it feels like you're authoring your own path
07:15not only are there these different stylistic ways to approach the game
07:19but there are many different powers you can buy
07:21and no player can have them all
07:22and then there are also different pathways running through the map
07:26as we've mentioned
07:31here the player has learned that one of the Pendleton Lords
07:34is in the steam room downstairs
07:36so he's descending into the Hammam area
07:40even though he'd make even more if they didn't blow it on prostitutes
07:42my cousins are swarming at their mob
07:44he says the slaves have dug half a mile down
07:47so deep they're dying by the dozen from collapsing
07:49for this playthrough he's going to attempt to
07:51take out the corrupt members of parliament
07:54without sounding any alarms
07:56so he doesn't want these guards to see him
07:58or fire their guns
07:59or yell for help
08:14there's monkeys here
08:22some moor
08:24the Dortmund
08:25who's a priest
08:28who...
08:30who
08:30...
08:48Now, there are several ways to access the target.
08:52One would be to find the key for this door,
08:54because it's an unbreakable door.
08:56Another one would be to use a fish, which is in a pond,
09:01and infiltrate this way.
09:02The other way is to make it look like an accident,
09:05and so this is what we're going to do here.
09:12The screen lasted hours.
09:14He begged and let him die.
09:18That's terrible.

09:45Custis and Morgan Pendleton are slave owners who run a mine,
09:49and so by doing a side quest for a crime boss named Slackjaw,
09:53he will take them for you, shave their heads, obscure their identities,
09:58and put them to work for years in their own mines.
10:00So it's a way to accomplish the mission and neutralize the targets
10:03without actually killing them.
10:05And across the game, all of the targets can be dealt with this way
10:09for the very thorough player who doesn't want to kill them.
10:19So here the player is sneaking in stealth mode,
10:22and he's using his darkvision power to see through walls
10:26and see the view cones of the characters, the guards,
10:29and he's moving up on the second target.
10:31He didn't get a good look.
10:33Did he say what he wanted?
10:34I hear he didn't say a word,
10:36but he went through the place like the Outsider himself.
10:39Maybe the plague's driven him crazy.
10:41He didn't fight.
10:42Wait, Harper, you got this.

11:05So many people ask us,

12:47So here we're going to demonstrate one of the ways we can combine powers.
12:55Here in this case the player jumped off the building and would have killed himself normally,
13:00but instead what he did is that he used the possession power on that woman
13:04and therefore projected himself into her body
13:10and then could walk around this way without dying.
13:13What's happening to me?
13:13Those are things that when we designed the powers we did not know the extent of the possibilities
13:20and then like looking at players, finding them out is really really satisfying for us.
