00:00Iran targeted Diego Garcia in the Shagos Islands before the government gave the U.S.
00:05permission to strike missile sites targeting the Strait of Hamus on Friday, it has been reported.
00:11But it is not clear exactly when the two intermediate-range ballistic missiles were fired.
00:17The Israeli Defense Forces said it was the first time Tehran had launched a long-range missile
00:23since the start of the war and claimed the country is now capable of reaching European cities,
00:29including London.
00:30However, Housing Secretary Steve Reid responded saying there are systems and defences in place
00:35to protect the country and insisted there is no specific assessment that the Iranians are
00:41targeting the U.K. or even could if they wanted to.
00:44So far, the government has not said exactly when the two intermediate-range ballistic missiles
00:49were fired at Diego Garcia in the Shagos Islands or how close they came to hitting their target.
00:55Diego Garcia is about 2,360 miles away from Iran and home to a base capable of accommodating
01:03long-range U.S. bombers and Navy ships.
01:05The Israeli military claimed the missiles could reach a distance of around 4,000 km, which is
01:12around 2,485 miles, posing a danger to dozens of countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
01:19One of the missiles was shot down by a U.S. warship, while the other failed in flight,
01:24it was reported, which Mr. Reid argued was proof that the region's defensive capabilities are working.
