00:00Right now on Fast & Loud.
00:04Looks like Richard's getting a little special hair treatment.
00:08Last week, Hot Rod Hunter Richard Rawlings and Master Mechanic Aaron Kaufman laid it all on the pavement
00:14as Richard forked over six figures for a shot at NHRA greatness.
00:19100 grand, man. Let's go race.
00:20But as this drag car got Richard all revved up,
00:24delays with his pink caddy build brought a dark cloud over the shop.
00:28Got a penalty on this. $10,000 a day.
00:31Now with the caddy falling behind schedule.
00:33Why is everybody standing around?
00:34The monkeys are running two different races.
00:36And both cars are threatening to go up in flames.
00:40What happened? How much did that cost?
00:42With all the stakes on the line, will Richard's latest gamble bring gas monkey glory?
00:46I'm here to win.
00:47Or will this roll of the dice burn him twice?
00:51Could this run take us out?
00:52Heck yeah.
00:54What the ?
00:59All right, guys. Why haven't I heard the caddy engine fire up?
01:02Why is everybody standing around?
01:03I'm gonna get you up to speed.
01:05We're having, we had a major delay in getting our water pump,
01:08which throws a complete curveball in what we had planned.
01:10Does that mean we have it right now or we don't?
01:11We will, we don't have it. We won't have it till tomorrow.
01:14So as you heard, we had another delay on the pink Cadillac.
01:17This is starting to be a pretty crappy week, which ironically started out pretty damn good.
01:21What's up, guys?
01:22It all began when I snapped up a chance to partner on an NHRA drag team for a hundred grand.
01:27Holy cow.
01:28We're going for the juggler van.
01:29Hi.
01:29Hey there.
01:30And then I get a client that walks in the door and wants me to build a 55 Cadillac.
01:34Wait for it.
01:35My budget's 100.
01:37For a hundred grand. I mean, when does that ever happen?
01:39Of course, with the deadline coming up fast, I ended up having to buy the only 55 pink four-door
01:43Cadillac from the Fired Up Guys.
01:47We weren't even going to go crazy with this one. I mean, throw some air ride in it, metal flake
01:51the roof, not even paint the rest of the car.
01:53And as soon as we dove into it, well, surprise.
01:56Hold on, something's breaking.
01:57And surprise.
01:58What? What? What?
01:59And surprise.
02:01You cannot get parts. All the major systems have to be rebuilt.
02:04And to make matters worse, if we can't get it done on time, I'm facing a $10,000 a day
02:07penalty for every day we're late.
02:09You've got to read these things before you sign them.
02:11So my wallet's empty, and if I don't get the pink Cadillac done in time to replenish the monkey coppers,
02:15well, then that little drag race down the strip, that's going to be about the last you see of the
02:19monkeys.
02:19And now they're telling me that a water pump is holding it up. A water pump. Really? I don't even
02:24understand that.
02:25The water pump is not available for purchase. It is. You have to send originals to be rebuilt.
02:29Everything connects to the water pump.
02:30We won't have it until tomorrow.
02:31If the water pump doesn't show up until 4 o'clock tomorrow, we lose the entire day.
02:34Yeah, so here is our thought process on a backup plan to still make the time window.
02:38We're going to work through the night tonight and get as much done mechanically as we can.
02:41And then tomorrow we'll go ahead and have KC start flaking the roof.
02:44Okay.
02:45We only have four days left on the car.
02:46So what we originally were hoping is that we could get the car fired up and then turn it over
02:49to KC.
02:50Because that's going to take him at least two or three days to do.
02:52But since we're waiting on the water pump anyway, we're just going to jump ahead in the schedule.
02:55It's going to take him about seven hours to get the roof completely finished.
02:58And then it's got to sit overnight.
03:00We'll get everything else plumbed in tonight, where all we lack is the front of the motor.
03:03So as we need to put the front of the motor, the belt's on, we're ready to fire the car.
03:06And I don't know any other way.
03:07Not to make the window.
03:08We're just going to divert what our original plan was.
03:11Okay.
03:11My problem is, I missed my deadline on this and it is not normal like, oh, my customer will be
03:16pissed off.
03:17Oh, I know.
03:17I'm losing $10,000 a day per diem.
03:20Okay.
03:21I can't believe this whole thing is being held up by one stupid part.
03:24I mean, really?
03:24I mean, this water pump might be the most expensive water pump in the history of water pumps.
03:28We're just trying to make the best of the situation.
03:30It's a situation either way.
03:31Um, what am I supposed to do?
03:35I don't even know why y'all call me in here for these decisions.
03:37Y'all handle it.
03:38I'll go back in here and cry and wipe my tears up with my checkbook.
03:42I thought we were handling it.
03:44I mean, I thought we handled it quite nicely.
03:48Wish I had a checkbook to cry into.
04:04You gonna put plastic on the bottom?
04:05Yeah, we'll put plastic once we get in there.
04:07We won't be able to tape up that because we just need to be able to lift that one side
04:09up a little bit.
04:11Just to steer it.
04:12So this morning I'm back at my shop because the Caddy is an around-the-clock job
04:15and I'd rather be sleeping in my bed every few hours than on the shop floor.
04:19Richard hates getting flake all over his paint booth anyway.
04:22To be able to bring this car home and to actually just be out in the country,
04:25listen to the birds chirp and watch my kids play around, it's pretty nice.
04:28Let's go.
04:29Are y'all pushing?
04:30Yep.
04:31The only downside is the support staff isn't quite as big out here.
04:34We're never gonna make it.
04:35We're not gonna make it.
04:36Go.
04:37Oh yeah.
04:39Oh .
04:41Yeah.
04:43Are we in?
04:44Yeah, we're in.
04:45Alright, that's good.
04:48This Cadillac, it's pink, so it kind of had its own little pop anyways.
04:51But Richard sold it as more of a jazzy job, so they wanted to add a little sparkle to the
04:55roof.
04:55So this is more along the lines of what I like to do.
04:57Something a little more custom.
04:58We're gonna meet a deadline with it.
05:00He's not gonna have time to have me redo it.
05:02So I'm gonna do it the way I like it, and he's just gonna have to deal with it.
05:09So we're gonna go ahead and do a silver flake, and we're gonna put candy on top of that.
05:18Hell yeah, that's sweet.
05:25The more coats of candy you put down, the more it'll change the color.
05:28So we're able to regulate the color and get to a point where we're happy with it without
05:32having to just go with a generic pink and then just clearing over it.
05:35So this will allow us to get the color we want, and to make sure it matches the car the
05:38best that it can.
05:42Alright, gotta let that dry for a while.
05:44I think I'm gonna go ahead and feed the ducks.
05:54Hey, Richard.
05:55What's going on, Kevin?
05:56How you doing?
05:56Good to see you, man.
05:57Welcome to the pits.
05:58Right on.
05:59Good to see you, brother.
05:59How you been?
06:00Tommy, look at this.
06:01Get you some of that.
06:02I'm getting me some of that.
06:04It's awesome, man.
06:04What do you think?
06:05That's awesome, man.
06:06I love it.
06:06Digging it?
06:07You ready to go down the track of the Fast Monkey?
06:08Yes, sir.
06:09Ready to go.
06:10So we're out here at the Texas Motorplex.
06:11It's qualifying day.
06:16Anyone that knows me and Aaron at all knows that we like cars that go fast.
06:20We'd be thrilled just to spectate at a Pedal Fest like this.
06:23To have a horse in the race?
06:25Well, that's a lot better.
06:26Let's meet Mike here.
06:27He's our car chief.
06:28Peggy.
06:28How are you doing, dude?
06:29Mike Fitzroyx.
06:30Nice to meet you.
06:31Tommy's got the car all stickered up, gas monkey style.
06:33Ellie even dressed up the trailer that we drove it here in.
06:35But that's about where every comparison about what we do and what they do ends.
06:40Instead of turning out one cool car after another, they have to build the same car over and over to
06:44make sure it's ready to go 300 miles an hour or better in under four seconds.
06:47Now that's fast.
06:48You guys can break this car down, change motors, back up.
06:51What is it, like 45, 50 minutes?
06:53It has to be back at the starting line at 50 minutes.
06:55Wow!
06:56Yeah, everything comes out, another set comes in, brand new motor, we're ready to go.
07:00Wow.
07:00It's quite an orchestra.
07:01So today the big deal is you've got to qualify, right?
07:05Right.
07:05You're going to run down the track by yourself first because it's your rookie year in this car.
07:08First time in this class here.
07:10Okay.
07:11So yeah, I'll make a solo run and just get A to B, and then we'll come back and we'll
07:15get after it for the next pass.
07:16Hey, what's up, man?
07:17Hey, what are you doing?
07:18How's it going?
07:19Oh, they got me working today, man.
07:21Are you doing something important back there?
07:22Are you making coffee?
07:23Yeah.
07:26I'm Roger Hennon.
07:27I'm one of the guys responsible for snagging Richard into this team, and I've got to say it's a great
07:31move to this point.
07:33Richard did a great job with the design on this car.
07:36Everybody is wanting a picture of it.
07:38I'm just over the top excited.
07:40I can't wait to stand on the gas and turn the wind light on.
07:43Of course, first we need to start with qualifying.
07:46Bill Miller here.
07:47They make a lot of the races.
07:49Yeah.
07:49They're tough.
07:50You know, all the toughs are here.
07:53Really?
07:53Roger took me around and pointed out the big competition.
07:55I mean, there's John Forces here, Schumacher, Coletta.
07:58I mean, these guys have been doing it a long time.
08:00They're the .
08:01I mean, they're the ones to beat.
08:02They're the ones we're gunning for.
08:03Who's these Capco guys?
08:05They run really strong.
08:06I seen Spencer Massey up here a while ago.
08:09Yeah?
08:09But you know, we just got to outrun them one at a time.
08:12I'm trusting you.
08:13This is my first rodeo out here.
08:16We got a good name.
08:17We got a good team.
08:17We got a good car and a good driver.
08:19I guess that's the recipe, isn't it?
08:20That's it.
08:21We're gonna get it done.
08:22I'm ready.
08:22I'm ready to race.
08:24I'm excited.
08:24Well, let's go get over by the truck and get warmed up.
08:27This is cool being a part of this sport.
08:29Jumping in like we did, I think, is a big chance, but that's what Gas Monkey's about.
08:34And if we get this car to the finals on Sunday, not only will there be 30,000 people in
08:38the stands watching the Gas Monkey name fly by,
08:40there will be over a half a million more watching on TV.
08:43Get you some of that.
08:46So what's happening, Roger?
08:48We're fixing to start it.
08:49We're gonna warm it up.
08:50We're gonna make some noise.
08:51All right.
08:51Get it, Kevin.
08:54So this will be the first time I hear this thing run.
08:56Oh, yeah.
08:57We got a lot of people watching us.
08:58Everybody cool?
08:59Woo!
09:00All right.
09:00We're ready.
09:02Let it rip.
09:03Tater chip.
09:24Yeah!
09:26How about that?
09:27That's awesome, man.
09:28Yeah, baby!
09:30That's it right there.
09:31It is the definition of fast and loud.
09:33For sure.
09:34Welcome to Top Fuel Racing, brother.
09:36We're here now, man.
09:37I love it.
09:40All right.
09:41We can roll.
09:42Let's go.
09:45I'm nervous.
09:46I'm not even driving.
09:53So this is what Gas Monkey's always been about.
09:55You know, we're the underdog.
09:56We started a small shop in Dallas, Texas.
09:58Try to work our way up.
09:59And I'm a gambler.
10:01I'm always gonna try to get more.
10:02Try to do better.
10:03Try to do something else.
10:04And, you know, my on the line.
10:07That's the bottom line.
10:08Ready?
10:09Yeah.
10:12Fine. Go ahead.
10:13Go ahead. Go ahead.
10:17Coming up.
10:18Woo!
10:19Dustin goes head over heels for the pink caddy.
10:22It seems not folded down.
10:24Hey.
10:24While Richard's investment goes up in flames.
10:27The freaking engine is on fire.
10:29Damn it.
10:34While Aaron's waiting on the Cadillac to get back from paint, we're here at the National Hot Rod Association's Fall
10:38Nationals.
10:51For those of you that don't know how drag racing works, here's the skinny.
10:54There's 19 teams out there that are gonna compete over the course of two days.
10:57They get four runs to qualify.
10:59And if we come in the top 16, well, we make it to the final round on Sunday.
11:04We don't qualify?
11:05Well, guess we just sit around and drink beer the rest of the weekend.
11:07So it'll be a short weekend.
11:09And nobody wants that.
11:11The track is only 1,000 feet, so there's no time to waste.
11:18These cars can go from zero to 100 in less than a second.
11:21And that puts the driver up to four Gs.
11:23That's more than an astronaut taking off.
11:25So it's definitely not a Sunday drive.
11:27Wow!
11:27Now it's time for the national event debut for the Gas Monkey Garage Car.
11:32With Kevin Kinsley behind the wheel.
11:35Kinsley's already had a great career drag racing on water and land,
11:38but this is his first go around in the top fuel category.
11:42He's only done a couple of laps down this track.
11:45And he's looking to make a name for himself here today.
11:49You know, this is a high-stakes, high-velocity sport.
11:52I'm feeling the pressure, and I know Richard's got to be feeling it, too.
11:55Today's all about qualifying, and that's what we're here for.
11:58So Kevin's job is to put the pedal to the metal.
12:00My job is to cheer.
12:01Gas Monkey, Top Fuel Jackster, on the track.
12:03Let's roll.
12:15That's a respectable way for Kevin to kick things off.
12:18411, 261 miles an hour.
12:21That's badass.
12:22It's great strategy.
12:23Just lay down a clean run and get ready for the next one.
12:26So we made our first run.
12:27I love it.
12:27I'm excited.
12:28We ran a 411.
12:29No problems, except for we blew a couple of cylinders.
12:32And I was looking at it, and I'm like, how much does that cost?
12:35For the first run at a national event, I think the guys did incredibly well.
12:39I couldn't have been more impressed.
12:41On the six-cylinder, they still put down a time.
12:43Very similar to everybody else's eight-cylinder run,
12:46and we know the car's got a lot more in it.
12:48So I really think that this next run is going to be great.
12:51Get the jacks on you.
12:52Here we go.
12:55We're in the hunt.
12:56We're going to get after it.
12:57Holy cow, man.
12:58That is pretty wild.
12:59Yeah.
12:59That is good to see that.
13:01But, you know, I dropped the cylinder about 700 foot.
13:03I saw it on the right-hand side.
13:05What happens when it drops the cylinder is that you take a chance
13:08at just totally ruining the motor.
13:10So you got to lift when you hear him say that.
13:12And, you know, a driver, he hates to lift off the gas pedal.
13:16I'm excited, man.
13:16And the next pass it out really well.
13:18Oh, yeah.
13:19It's like it's in slow motion when you're doing it.
13:21It's pulling really hard, but it's like your eyes are this big,
13:23you know, and you're just trying to take it all in, you know.
13:25And it's just, it seems like an eternity, kind of.
13:29So what are the, what's the deal?
13:31What are they doing right now?
13:32Right now, we're just going to take the whole motor apart.
13:34We're going to service it, pull the pistons out,
13:36put a whole new compressed clutch back in it,
13:38put it all back together, and then we'll go again.
13:41Holy cow.
13:42Yep.
13:42Why do you take two weeks to build a car, man?
13:44Well, they built the same car over and over and over again.
13:48Yeah, yeah.
13:49So now that we've got one run under our belt,
13:51the real work can actually begin.
13:52We have to get the engine tore down, put back together,
13:54and prep for another race.
13:55Show me how you make this thing go faster,
13:56and you figure out what's going on.
13:57Our crew chief's going to take a look at all the data
13:59and see what we can do to improve the performance.
14:01Look at our timing graph here.
14:03Our number two cylinder we dropped at 1.3 seconds.
14:07So if you look right there, then we had another cylinder go out at 2 seconds.
14:11And the failure was probably due to just a lack of load?
14:15Lack of load with nitromethane.
14:17Lack of clutch load.
14:18So the trick to this whole deal is traction,
14:20delivering as much power as the tires will take.
14:22The problem is that on really hot track and with so much power available,
14:27if we give it too much clutch, we're going to end up smoking the tires.
14:29And the second we start spinning the tires, we're actually going slower.
14:33If we do that, then our competition that's not spinning their tires
14:36is going to blow right by us.
14:37So the crew is constantly making tiny adjustments to the clutch,
14:40to the engine, to the blower, trying to achieve the perfect balance.
14:43Copy that.
14:46It's hard to imagine the pressure these things are under.
14:49On a streetcar to make 1,000 horsepower is incredible.
14:52The motor makes 10,000 horsepower.
14:56Everything it does is really simple,
14:58but it is all the way on the ragged edge of what the material can actually handle.
15:02And so just a slight miscalculation or a failure of a park can cause,
15:07you know, a cascading effect.
15:08So you can easily blow up an engine and a run faster than you can say giddy up cowboy.
15:15The air is going to get better a little later this afternoon.
15:18Track will cool off and the car will stick a little better.
15:21And we're number nine qualifier right now.
15:23So, you know, we're in the top half of the field.
15:26Not a bad place to be after the first session.
15:29And, you know, when it cools off tonight and we get it a little faster,
15:32then, hey, we may move up from that number nine spot.
15:35That's what we're hoping for.
15:47Caddy's stripped .
15:49Yeah, it's still pink.
15:50Yeah.
15:52So while Richard and Aaron have been playing around the track,
15:55I've been taking care of business.
15:56We're on a drop-dead deadline for this caddy.
15:58So I busted my ass and got it done in two days instead of three.
16:02Dustin, are you driving this car?
16:04You want to borrow my shirt?
16:05Yeah, take it off.
16:07Yeah.
16:07Take it off.
16:08Woo!
16:09Dustin.
16:09What?
16:10Here, steer this because the wheels do this.
16:12So it wants to all the way off.
16:14Okay.
16:18See, I think Dustin looks pretty good in it.
16:21His seat's not bolted down.
16:23What?
16:24The seat's not bolted down.
16:26I was like, ah!
16:30He's a backseat driver.
16:38This car's heavy.
16:43Working out today.
16:47I'm pretty sure this is the girliest car that you've ever painted.
16:51All right, that's good right there.
16:52Right here?
16:53Yep.
16:53We got the car back from KC, and the flaking looks awesome.
16:56But it's probably just as well that Richard's at the drag strip.
16:59Because if he saw what we still had left to do on this car,
17:01he'd be really stressed out.
17:02Completely detail this and get down to this engine bay,
17:04get the fuel lines running,
17:05then we can try to start this car after lunch.
17:07Aaron's got to be at the track as well today,
17:08so he left me in charge of the project.
17:10The best news of the day is we finally got the water pump back,
17:12so we can really get cracking now.
17:14Getting our water pump, that really, really held us up.
17:17Basically, everything goes through your radiator hoses,
17:19your heater hoses.
17:20You can't put the pulleys on without it,
17:22which means then you can't put your altimeter,
17:24you can't put your belt, you can't do anything.
17:25So now that we've got it, get it bolted on,
17:27and get the rest of this engine put together completely.
17:35Stitch is putting the whole front of the motor together.
17:37Charles is going to handle the battery and all the wiring,
17:39and I'm going to get the fuel lines run
17:40so we can get some fuel to the motor.
17:42We're going to have to work as late as we have to,
17:43to have this thing fired up by the time Richard and Aaron
17:45get back from the drag strip.
17:47Hopefully, they'll have good news,
17:48and we can give them a little bit more once they show up.
18:03All right, man, we got it going.
18:06So first run, we did really, really well.
18:08We just went point A to point B,
18:09didn't really push as hard as we needed to,
18:11just needed to make a good run, see what it looked like.
18:15We started looking at the computer,
18:16and we realized that we needed to tune things up a little bit,
18:18so a little play with the clutch,
18:19a little play with the nitro,
18:21that's just the step we need to go after round two.
18:24They got the car ready in record time.
18:26We're ready to rock.
18:27Air's right.
18:28Temperature's right.
18:29The track's right.
18:30Everything is perfect.
18:31We should make a record run.
18:35That's Kevin Kingsley firing his car.
18:40That's how we go with a cat's monkey garage machine,
18:43plus sweat and beers.
18:45They're sitting at number nine
18:47after their top fuel debut run earlier this afternoon,
18:50but they got a lot of big names coming for them.
18:53Moody Smith and his crew have made a few adjustments to the car.
18:56Now they just have to sit back and see if they can get in.
19:07Kingsley's not going to be happy with that one.
19:10432 at 187 miles per hour.
19:13It's never good when you see flames coming out anywhere but the pipes.
19:16Damn it.
19:17Looks like they chewed the heads off that one.
19:20Sounded good.
19:21The freaking engine, it's on fire, Dennis.
19:23Not good at all.
19:25That's a lot of money.
19:26That's a lot of money.
19:27That caddy better pull through because I'm broke.
19:31Damn it.
19:34Coming up...
19:35We got a very long way to go.
19:36Richard lays down the law.
19:38Nobody goes home.
19:39Nobody does anything until it's done.
19:40Can we eat?
19:41But it's the caddy...
19:42Trying to start it.
19:43...that misbehaves.
19:45Whoa, whoa.
19:54So, our Gas Monkey Hen and Race team just finished the second qualifying run
19:57at the National Hot Rod Association's Fall Nationals.
20:03I don't even know how to explain it to you.
20:05That's why I brought Technical Guy.
20:08The car came out of the hole pulling hard.
20:10One of the rollers on one of the rockers came loose.
20:12And we didn't even really complete a run.
20:14What's up, man?
20:16So, what happened?
20:18Well, you know, this is a pushrod in the motor.
20:22This is what it's supposed to look like.
20:24Where's the rest of it?
20:26In the motor.
20:27When it broke this pushrod, then it started mixing up cylinders.
20:30That's when you've seen the copper.
20:31Fire starts eating through the hood.
20:33That's the green.
20:33That's the green.
20:34That might be the first time that I ever don't like the color green.
20:38Air got good.
20:39Boost got good.
20:40It was on a run.
20:41This pushrod just...
20:42Said no dice.
20:43Said no dice.
20:44Did we hurt anything else?
20:46If we did, there's another bullet.
20:48So, how many backup motors we got?
20:51Four.
20:52Four?
20:52For this weekend, yeah.
20:55This racing is expensive.
20:57There's teams here that have 10 motors back up.
20:59They're planning on wasting one every run.
21:01We're just trying to scrape by.
21:03We're still in, because I saw a lot of other cars fail, too.
21:05Oh, yeah.
21:05Yeah, we're still in.
21:06Hey, we got two more hits tomorrow.
21:08Cool thing is, is the car's not damaged.
21:10So, we're gonna be able to be back together running tonight,
21:13and we'll be back on the track in the morning.
21:15We're in the hunt.
21:15We're not dead last, and two more days of racing.
21:18So, I think it's beer time.
21:20It's definitely that.
21:25I had to get my own, because I didn't have a beer assistant,
21:27because I couldn't afford it, because I just blew a head gasket.
21:30All right, my man.
21:31Well, he did a great job.
21:32He kept it on track.
21:33We're good to go.
21:34So, we're back at it in the morning, first thing.
21:36We're back at it in the morning, first thing.
21:37All right.
21:38You and the team got done with it tonight.
21:40No, we'll have it back.
21:41We'll be ready to fire it here in an hour.
21:43Yeah.
21:44Wow!
21:54So, it's day two for the qualifying runs of the Dragster,
21:56and my mind's not even in that right now.
21:58It's on that damn pink Cadillac.
22:00The guys have been working around the clock to get it done,
22:02so I don't get penalized $10,000 a day for not delivering it on time.
22:06They said they'd be firing the engine this morning, and I hope it's true.
22:09You guys look like you've got a very long way to go.
22:12How?
22:12Because there's no hood on it?
22:14Four front clip.
22:16Four bumpers.
22:16My grill.
22:17Interior's all messed up.
22:18Paint looks good, though.
22:19What's up with that?
22:20Yeah, I know.
22:20Can you finish it?
22:21Yep.
22:21Actually, we're a lot further along than it looks.
22:24You've got about 24 hours.
22:25Yeah, we know.
22:26Well, here's the deal.
22:27Nobody goes home, nobody does anything until it's done,
22:29because we start losing a considerable chunk of money off the contract
22:31that I signed because the car's supposed to be there on X day,
22:34ready to rock, and then there's all this other BS
22:36that I didn't know was going on when I sold the car,
22:38so let's just get it done, get it out of here, make my life better.
22:42We'll do it.
22:43I've got a race to go to.
22:45They say can't leave.
22:48Yeah.
22:49Can we eat?
22:51If you can do it while still using your hands on the car.
22:53Hey, will you come feed me?
22:55No.
22:56I don't want to see that.
22:57I don't want to see that.
23:01So the pink Cadillac is back from paint, and that means my racing days are over.
23:05Back to reality.
23:06Well, at least until we deliver the pink car.
23:11Jason's already taking care of quite a few things that would keep the engine from running.
23:15He's got the leaky fuel line fixed and the flaky alternator.
23:18If we can take this off and start the car, I'd rather get the motor broke in.
23:21We can chase that.
23:22Now the only thing we really have left is break this thing in.
23:25Because our color sequence has changed.
23:28If there was any opportunity for failure, it would be whenever we start the engine.
23:31However, I doubt very seriously that we're going to have any problems with the motor.
23:35With our deadline so close, we brought in Jamie, our engine builder, just to make sure everything
23:39goes as smooth as possible.
23:41Assuming he didn't leave a piston out, I think we'll probably be okay.
23:44You think everything's hot to the distributor?
23:46Yes, we know.
23:47We tested it there.
23:48What did you do at the points?
23:49Half-ass set them at least?
23:50I set them off my book.
23:52Okay.
23:52Okay, good.
23:52Okay.
23:53Is that wire over there?
23:54Is that still connected to the battery over there?
23:55Yeah.
23:56Charles.
23:57I'm trying to start it.
24:03Nothing.
24:04Did I smoke that coil?
24:05None of it is.
24:06Freaking hot.
24:08We got the smokes.
24:10Do I got a flashlight?
24:13Oh.
24:14Sonny, what a bitch.
24:15The points are fried.
24:17The wiring inside the distributor is, it's pretty scuzzy.
24:21And I think that we just, we burned up the, not the point, the contactors on the point,
24:26but the, I think they're dead shorting in the body of the distributor.
24:29The condenser's probably what's gone.
24:32We just tried to rehab this old wiring harness.
24:34And we've done a really good job, but that doesn't mean there aren't demons lurking.
24:37So we just gotta find them and beat them out.
24:40I think the condenser just took a dirt nap.
24:47So the main part we need is the condenser.
24:48The condenser gives the jolt to the spark.
24:51It gives you enough to fire the motor.
24:53It's totally fried, so we've got the part we need.
24:55The points we can clean and straighten and put in, they'll probably work just fine.
24:57We're gonna give it a shot so we don't have to wait another 30 minutes for the part.
25:00Yeah.
25:01Yeah.
25:02Go for it.
25:05Need more battery than that.
25:06Whoa, whoa.
25:07Timing just a little bit off.
25:09Man, that sounds like some bitch is 180 out.
25:11That's what it sounds like to me.
25:13180 out.
25:16Sure enough, the timing was off on the distributor by about 180 degrees.
25:19So we adjusted the distributor.
25:21Oh.
25:22There you go.
25:23And gave it another shot.
25:25That's part of our problem right there.
25:26I'm ready.
25:28Your base steps back.
25:29.
25:35Dude, we need to do some more research because obviously we're doing something wrong.
25:37.
25:41Coming up.
25:42Oh, man.
25:43Richard's ready for some action at the track.
25:45Hey, Brittany, call me.
25:46Shut up, Richard.
25:48As the gas monkey car.
25:49I want a 3-6.
25:51Faces its do-or-die run.
25:53Or two.
25:55What the ****?
25:57Top-fuel dragster engines have approximately how much horsepower?
26:21The answer is D.
26:23Some top-fuel dragsters even have up to 10,000 horsepower.
26:38Whoa!
26:40Are you ready?
26:41We're ready, brother.
26:42Here we go.
26:42How are you?
26:43Good.
26:43How are you?
26:44So did you get all the problems fixed from last night?
26:46Oh, yeah.
26:47Oh, yeah.
26:47Boaty and the guys got it all put back together.
26:49Seen this thing around last night, and I didn't like the green light.
26:52First time I never liked green.
26:53It takes more green to fix the green, though.
26:55Oh.
26:55No, no, no.
26:56I'm all right.
26:57I'm all in.
26:58I got no more.
26:59So while Aaron and the guys are finishing up the pink Cadillac back at the shop, I'm
27:02here at the Texas Motorplex for the second day of qualifying.
27:05Yesterday, we came in at number 16.
27:08That's not good.
27:09There's 19 cars.
27:1016's kind of the bump.
27:11That's where you're either in or you're out.
27:13Because only 16 cars will qualify to race on Sunday.
27:15Like I always say, we're down to the cutting now.
27:18Yeah.
27:20All right.
27:20We can roll.
27:21All right.
27:21We're fixing to go run.
27:23All right.
27:23So yesterday was super expensive, and I don't have a whole lot more money.
27:27So we need to run this thing down the track, get the time we need, and get out without hurting
27:32ourselves.
27:33Not a problem.
27:33We're all good.
27:34All right.
27:36Of course, we're running at a bit of a disadvantage here because we're not a big established team.
27:40Get in there, fool.
27:41Woo!
27:42I mean, we don't have tens of millions of dollars behind us.
27:45But clearly money isn't everything.
27:47We're running in front of some of the top money teams there are, including Brittany Force.
27:51Shoot up.
27:51Ready to go.
27:52Her daddy, John Force, is one of the, I guess, the biggest drag racers in history with over
27:57134 victories under his belt.
27:58We're not in yet.
27:59You guys aren't in yet.
28:00We know what y'all can do.
28:02Just save us one spot, would you?
28:03But that's what makes it exciting.
28:05It does.
28:05If it was easy, everybody would do it.
28:07Exactly.
28:07And it's also why they call it a drag.
28:09Because if you don't make it, it's kind of a drag.
28:11Oh, we're gonna make it.
28:13Hey, Brittany, call me.
28:15Shut up, Richard.
28:16Go.
28:17Go.
28:18One thing I've learned so far, even LeBron James doesn't have as much experience talking
28:22smack as drag racers.
28:23Amtron, are you in yet?
28:25I'm not in yet.
28:26We're coming after that monkey.
28:27Let's race it now.
28:27See ya.
28:28Let's get it.
28:29Of course, if you're gonna talk the talk, well, you gotta walk the walk, and we only
28:32got two more chances to make that happen.
28:34All right.
28:35I want a 3-6.
28:363-6.
28:38Beat it.
28:46Looks like Richard's getting a little special hair treatment down there.
28:59What the ?
29:01We got the next round.
29:03We got the next round.
29:04We got the next round.
29:05The tires start spinning?
29:06Yeah.
29:07We'll back it out a little bit.
29:08When you overpower the racetrack, it's never good.
29:13So we turned in our third run at a 4.42.
29:16Nowhere near what we need to qualify for finals on Sunday.
29:21We're still sitting on the bump at 16, and we've only got one more race to see if we
29:25can stay in.
29:25And I'm a gambling man, but I don't like those odds.
29:31The problem we're having today is the track is really hot.
29:34That's causing the car to get a lot of tire slippage.
29:37It's causing the clutch to lock up too quick.
29:39That'll get Kevin into trouble.
29:41Now to qualify, we have to run quicker than we ever have, and it's not getting any cooler
29:47out there.
29:48Right now, what I'm doing is I'm picking out my static weight.
29:52We have a 12-lever clutch.
29:54So what I'm trying to do is distribute the weight properly, evenly.
29:57That run there, we pulled on a little too hard in the middle.
29:59With the racetrack temperature where it's at, the amount of clutch wear, geometry of the
30:04levers, the way it applies weight, was a little too aggressive.
30:07Let's go.
30:09A little clutch cooling.
30:11I'm really freaked out right now because, I mean, our money's on the line, the car's
30:14on the line.
30:15We got everything here, but we're just not pulling what we want to pull, and it's all
30:20about tomorrow.
30:20I mean, if you don't make it to the big show on Sunday, you might as well not have come.
30:33We've been working all morning ever since Richard left for the track to try to get this engine
30:36fired.
30:36We tried to start it a couple of times with no success.
30:41First thing, we had our timing off.
30:42We corrected that, and we thought we had it.
30:47But this is the typical breakdown.
30:49Every time you start a car for the first time after, you know, restoring it or putting
30:52it back together, you've got to chase all the little problems.
30:54What the hell was that?
30:55But this one chased us right back to the 1955 original manual.
30:59If it's telling you the firing order, like right here, 183-472, and they want you to
31:03start here, then that means 18.
31:05We have it 18.
31:07Does that make sense?
31:08That's right.
31:10I see that.
31:11Apparently, the firing order was screwed up.
31:13We had the distributor set right, but the plug wires were out of order, so we're going
31:16to give it another shot.
31:17Here, pump it like twice.
31:19All right, come on.
31:26Idle it up.
31:31Oh, it's a little bit.
31:34Hold?
31:35No.
31:35Let off.
31:40Damn.
31:45So the Cadillac's running.
31:46Jamie's watching it break in.
31:48Now it's just a matter of time.
31:50That's how much longer we've got left.
31:52But our time is running out.
31:54I hope they're running faster than we are out of the track, because this one is going
31:57to be really tight.
32:04Up!
32:04Up!
32:05Up!
32:05Up!
32:06Up!
32:07Pull up, Randy.
32:08So this is it.
32:09Our last chance to qualify to make the big show on Sunday.
32:11Kick ass.
32:12Better rip, Tater Chef!
32:13Go, go, go, go, go, go!
32:15Between this and wondering if Aaron's going to get the caddy up and driving, I mean, my nerves
32:18are shot.
32:19I've never stuck my head out this far on investing this much of my hard-earned money, and there's
32:23no guarantee on any of it.
32:25I mean, Schumacher just had a killer run.
32:27He just took the top.
32:30But I gotta tell you, it's about more than money right now.
32:33I mean, we're all on the same team, and we all want the same thing to win.
32:36And you can't do that if you don't even qualify.
32:38So, it's cutting time.
32:40Texas style.
32:42Here's the situation facing the Gas Monkey team.
32:45They're at number 16 right now.
32:47But that's not safe, because there are two very good cars coming up that are more than
32:51capable of bumping them out.
32:53Kinsley needs to deliver a 399 or better.
33:00Oh, Kinsley pedals it and smokes the tires.
33:06He ends the day with a 4.962 and 152 miles per hour, and that leaves him on the bump.
33:12So, we're all looking for that really fast run, and what do we get?
33:15411.
33:16Eh, it's not exactly gonna cut the mustard.
33:18I mean, we're still sitting on the bump at 16, and if one more car goes down the track
33:22faster than us, well, it's game over.
33:24Alright, Troy Buck is sitting in the 19th spot.
33:26He needs a great run if he wants to show off tomorrow.
33:39That's it.
33:40We didn't make it.
33:46Well, there you have it, folks.
33:47We won't be here tomorrow.
33:49We didn't pour passes.
33:50We didn't make the final, but then again, you know, some of the top teams in the world
33:53didn't.
33:53I mean, even Brittany Force didn't make it.
33:55Not racing tomorrow.
33:56It felt really good down low and in the middle, but it just wouldn't hold it.
34:00And I pedaled it, and I'm not supposed to, so I'm probably gonna get a tongue lashing
34:03after the cameras go away.
34:05But, you know, you want to get in so bad, we want to do good for you.
34:09I am disappointed, but that's not the whole story.
34:12This thing has been the biggest amount of money I've ever thrown out as far as marketing,
34:16and it is a huge risk for Gas Monkey.
34:18Did it pay off?
34:19Was it worth it?
34:20I think we shook this sport up.
34:21I always think there's a silver lining on every cloud.
34:24We kind of kicked the doors in on NHRA.
34:26We showed them what the monkey and Hensley and Hennon's all about.
34:30We're in.
34:31Oh, yeah.
34:31Let me tell you.
34:32One of our competitors said, man, you guys tweak on this thing a little bit more.
34:36Y'all are coming.
34:37Oh, we're coming?
34:38Yeah, we're coming.
34:38I ain't backing out.
34:39You backing out?
34:40No, I ain't scared.
34:41I ain't scared.
34:42And besides that, you gotta look on the really bad side.
34:45Brittany ain't got nothing to do tomorrow.
34:46It's Sunday.
34:47I'm gonna have a picnic.
34:49Boom!
34:57Coming up on Fast & Loud, Richard rolls the caddy in on time, but finds his reception strangely lifeless.
35:04Ladies, ladies, you're looking a little dead tonight.
35:09You wanna cut your sleeves off, Dustin?
35:11I'm telling you, once this happens, you'll go lift buildings and stuff.
35:14You'll feel so strong and masculine.
35:16I went out there and blew my nose with a cactus a minute ago.
35:19It's ridiculous how strong I feel.
35:20I think you've got good technique.
35:22You've got good form.
35:23He's been doing this for years.
35:26Golly!
35:26I feel great.
35:27You look so like trash right now.
35:29Do you not wanna arm wrestle everybody right now?
35:31Yeah.
35:31One, two, three, go.
35:33We're gonna dent this car.
35:34Where can we go?
35:35This is just gonna crawl out.
35:36Look at that hill.
35:37Did you see that hill come out?
35:43Well, here she is.
35:44It looks like my little gamble paid off.
35:46Well, this is Gas Monkey's take on a 1955 Cadillac, just like the one Elvis gave his mama.
35:52And they're not that common, so who has one?
35:55Over at Fired Up Garage, Tom and Jordan.
36:00Man, do we have to buy it from Tom?
36:02Whoa, that's gonna hurt on top of that.
36:05This thing was a horrible mess.
36:08Very scary.
36:09I ended up buying the car for 25 grand because I just have to have it.
36:12Was it worth it?
36:13Probably not.
36:14Did I need it?
36:14Yes.
36:15So I got the car bought.
36:16Gonna turn it over to Aaron and the crew and said, make it happen.
36:19We knew we wanted it lower, so, well, cut the springs, eh, not really our style.
36:24We wanted to put it on air.
36:25Woo!
36:25So we did just that.
36:26We yanked out the front coil springs, put it in airbags, and then in the back, well, we had to
36:30build that from scratch.
36:31It was on leaf springs, and now it's got a four link in the back, and it gets pretty low
36:36now, thanks to AccuAir suspension.
36:38When it came to the interior on this one, it was actually in really, really good shape.
36:42It's nice.
36:43It's white leather.
36:43It's not ripped.
36:44It's not torn.
36:45We wiped it down a little bit.
36:46It's perfect.
36:47But the motor.
36:48We sent it down to Jamie, and it turns out it's actually a good little motor.
36:51It wasn't trashed.
36:52It was just wore out.
36:53And I think it's gonna jam pretty good for the next owner.
36:58We had to put a little bit of gas monkey flare to it, so we relied on Casey for that.
37:03We laid down a good little flake job on top, brought Tanner in and did some pinstripe,
37:07and that kind of pushed it right over the edge to give it that gas monkey flare.
37:11The client, they needed some tunes.
37:13We know a stereo guy, and he paneled the entire back of the car while we were fixing the electronics.
37:18Boom.
37:19This thing looks nice, acts nice, drives nice.
37:22I'm telling you, pink is the new nice.
37:25We got this car knocked out.
37:26It's going to a good home up in Oklahoma at the Hard Rock Casino.
37:29Then somebody's gonna win it.
37:31So somebody's gonna get this car for free.
37:36All right, here we are.
37:39Woo!
37:41So I pull up at the Hard Rock, and our client, Roxanne, is so anxious, she doesn't even want
37:45to stop and talk until the caddy's actually sitting on the casino floor.
37:49Wow, it looks awesome.
37:51You know what?
37:51It turned out really, really cool.
37:53Basically, you gave me free reign to do whatever, and we did exactly what you know the gas monkey package.
37:57Win me sticker and everything.
37:58Well, you said you were gonna give it away.
38:00Yes, that is awesome.
38:02So there you go.
38:03It looks great.
38:04Full air ride all the way around with the AccuAir system, spruce up the interior,
38:07big stereo system, and metal flaked the roof.
38:09I love it.
38:10I love it.
38:10It turned out really, really nice.
38:11I was blown away.
38:13The car's perfect.
38:14It's more than I asked for.
38:15I love the pin striping that was done on it, the pearlized roof.
38:18I couldn't be more pleased.
38:20We rebuilt everything on the car itself.
38:22All the systems are new front to back.
38:24Motor, tranny, rear end, brakes.
38:27Everything is completely built and ready to rock and roll.
38:30Everybody in the casino's talking about it.
38:32They all wanna win it.
38:33Well, it's here.
38:33It's here on time.
38:34So, what do you think?
38:35I think it's awesome.
38:36Richard, you did an outstanding job.
38:39Thanks.
38:39Well, my guys at the shop worked hard.
38:40You didn't give us very much time.
38:41No, we didn't.
38:42So you guys are gonna give this thing away?
38:43We are tonight at 10 o'clock.
38:45You wanna give it away for us?
38:46Can I?
38:47Absolutely, really?
38:48You do that?
38:48Do I get to hang out till then and do some gambling?
38:50Yes, yes.
38:50But we're forgetting the money.
38:53Well, we can go take care of that up here.
38:55Cool.
38:55Don't give me cash.
38:56It's a casino.
38:57That'll probably end up giving most of it back to you.
38:58So they're happy with the car.
39:00I'm happy that it's here.
39:01It's done.
39:01All I gotta do is collect my check and have a beer
39:04and give the car away.
39:05Are you ready for this or what?
39:07Yes!
39:09All right.
39:09Well, I'm not gonna waste your time.
39:11I'm gonna bring the man out here right now.
39:13Richard, give away!
39:16Ladies.
39:17Ladies, ladies, you're looking a little dead tonight.
39:20So I roll up there and there's these chicks next to me
39:22that look like zombies and they smell like French vanilla
39:25for some reason.
39:26I'll never understand that part.
39:27All right.
39:27Let's figure this out.
39:29But the bottom line is they handed me an envelope.
39:31The name has been drawn.
39:32I rip it open.
39:33Okay.
39:34We got Curtis Choice Jr.
39:38There he is.
39:39There we go.
39:42Congratulations.
39:44Congratulations, Curtis.
39:45Who's got a free Cadillac?
39:46So I'm thinking, who's gonna win a four-door pink Cadillac?
39:49It's gotta be a chick, right?
39:50You know?
39:51Curtis Choice Jr.
39:52The car is beautiful.
39:53It may not be a real manly car now, but it will be.
39:57As soon as I get in it.
39:58So there you go.
40:00Another satisfied customer.
40:02Another satisfied winner.
40:03Everything's good.
40:04Gas Monkey got the deal done.
40:06This pink Caddy, it's probably the first four-door pink Caddy
40:08I've ever been a fan of.
40:09And it's probably the last one I'll ever be a fan of
40:12because nobody does it better than Gas Monkey.
40:14This the you can be riding around Tulsa like the man.
40:17All you need to get is a bikini girl in the front.
40:19You sit in the back with your lady.
40:20Have a little champagne.
40:22Go back and forth to the casino.
40:23You get together.
40:23I don't know what kind of text you're gonna show me that, right?
40:25Heck yeah, we are.
40:27Congratulations, my man.
40:28Good job.
40:29Woo!
40:30Woo!
40:31Woo!
40:32Woo!
40:33Woo!
40:39Richard invested $100,000 to become a big cat on the NHRA dragster race circuit.
40:45To ease his investment, he bought a pair of Jags.
40:48I don't understand English.
40:50And flipped them to his favorite Brit for a cool 40 grand.
40:53Yeah!
40:54He also bet he could deliver a swanky pink Caddy to the Hard Rock Casino in Tulsa in under two
41:00weeks.
41:00Super easy!
41:01After paying $25,000.
41:03Excellent.
41:05He rebuilt the engine and tranny, gave it air ride, and some metal flake to make this pink
41:14princess sparkle.
41:16And delivered this bell to the ball on time for a cool $100,000 payday.
41:20I love it.
41:21All told, Richard lost $45,000 this week just so he could run in the fast lane.
41:26But all that exposure for Gas Monkey?
41:29Ha ha!
41:30Priceless.
41:30HeJosh이신 .
