00:30You need something to say, like, okay, I'm setting a certain tone and a patina here so that then we
00:37can contrast that with some stark, like, changes.
00:40We need the intensity to strike a different chord. That only works if you have the negative space to play
00:46off of.
00:47We wanted you to be forced to make some choices in the world that showed how depleted the resources were.
00:56You know the drill. Look around. See if there's anything we can use.
01:01And we really wanted to give you a reason to go explore this space.
01:04It's like, well, all you need is to help you survive another day in this world.
01:08Throughout the world, the player finds all sorts of different pieces of items, such as rags, alcohol, bits of broken
01:18blades, bindings.
01:20And you can combine these together in different ways in order to create items that are useful for surviving in
01:26this world.
01:30Some items in the recipes require the same combinations of things or the same types of resources.
01:34So you have to make this choice. Do I want to go offensive with it? Do I want to go
01:37defensive with it?
01:38I can find a bottle of alcohol and some rags and I can create a Molotov cocktail from it.
01:42That's going to help me take out a couple guys if I use it appropriately.
01:51Or I could use those same ingredients and craft a medkit.
01:55And that lets me kind of choose. I want to play it more defensively and kind of have items that
01:59help me heal myself.
02:00Or much more aggressively, I want to have items that help me kill and destroy in order to then progress
02:05and get out of this area.
02:07Molotov and medkit are not the only ones that have these interesting overlaps.
02:12You can craft a shiv out of a binding and a blade so that you can sneak up behind somebody
02:16and take them out more quickly and more quietly.
02:19Or you can just jimmy open locked doors.
02:21So you are expending a binding and a blade in the hopes that there's going to be something awesome on
02:27the other side of that door.
02:28Or you could craft a melee upgrade.
02:31So you might have some nails that you've picked up or a pair of scissors or something.
02:35You're going to be able to use bandages and use these things to attach them to the 2x4.
02:41So now you've got a more powerful melee weapon.
02:43This is something you're going to be able to run and take down and then you just never blow.
02:46Alternatively, you can use those same type of nails to make a bomb.
02:51This is something you can place in the world and they're going to be able to trigger it.
02:58Since resources are limited, you stealth pass an encounter, you're not getting the stuff that was encountered.
03:03Not just the stuff off the guys that you would have taken down, but also in terms of what's in
03:07the environment for you to scavenge.
03:09So you have to balance this reward, but it's definitely all a part of the choice.
03:14And sometimes the world doesn't give you a choice.
03:16Sometimes the battle breaks out in a way you didn't expect and you have to make decisions in the moment.
03:22So that's another reason why we did the whole crafting system live.
03:26We didn't want the player to have to scroll through a long list of different items.
03:32We wanted it to be the absolute minimum amount of button presses.
03:38The thing that I hate about any games UI is when it pulls you out of the game for too
03:43long.
03:44So that was a challenge to reduce it all to like that half of a screen.
03:47You want to see Joel, you want to see what's going on around him and be aware of what's happening
03:54so you don't have an infected run up on you and start beating on you when you're crafting shivs and
03:59stuff.
04:00So we needed to make it streamlined and fast enough that you felt like you could take just that moment
04:06and be able to craft that thing that's going to mean your survival in the next 30 seconds or your
04:12failure to survive.
04:23The brutality of the encounters is allowing us to reach into the tone of the survival aspect of the game.
04:32When something comes up in their way, whether it's a human or infected, then Joel and Ellie, you hear them
04:36whisper to each other and you see their animations change.
04:39Everything, their whole demeanor reacts to the scenario in front of them.
04:43And that's the same feeling we want you to have when you're holding that joystick.
04:47It's just like, oh, okay, what do I have in my inventory?
04:50How many are there?
04:51Where are they at?
04:52Locate them and try to figure out, okay, what are we going to do?
04:56Joel, there's something over there.
