00:39The creatures in the Book of Spells are created from the text and the illustrations of the book.
00:46When developing the creatures we start off with a design from the game designers
00:54outlining where they're going to be used in the game.
01:00From there I would sit down and work with a concept artist to flesh out initial sketches
01:08and ideas, what these things are going to look like.
01:14You've got the initial model, what it looks like, its form, its structure, its colouring
01:20and then we need to try and make it move.
01:26When we get involved obviously we have to allow these characters to move, we have to give them the means
01:34to do that.
01:35And for that we build a skeleton that you can basically place inside that model.
01:42Once that's complete we can then effectively automate parts of that skeleton.
01:48so you can put a control on the hand and then when you grab that control you can just move
01:53it around like that.
01:54It's nice and easy and it just works itself out.
01:57We do that with the whole character and then when we're finished with that we can pass it over to
02:02the character animators.
02:06My favourite part in animation is actually the planning, the research and going and thinking about the character
02:15and the personality and what they would think and how they would act and how they would specifically react to
02:25a certain situation.
02:31And then once we have this creature that's got certain animations then I will combine these together and it really
02:36brings that original concept to life.
02:43I think one of my favourite creatures to develop was the dragon.
02:47Mostly because it was the first creature I got my hands on so I could experiment a bit and see
02:51what worked and what didn't work.
02:53And I discovered I could combine different animals to make a new one.
02:58So for example with the dragon I combined a leopard, a vulture and a pig to make the dragon's voice.
03:08But the dragon's movement and wing flaps were actually sourced from fire sounds.
03:14So any time you hear a dragon flapping his wings it's actually the sound of a fireball.
03:23The characters definitely go through a process of development where they might start off,
03:31we might think of them in one way at first and then as we work through the situations that they're
03:38in
03:38we might think of different, more entertaining ways for them to express their personalities.
03:48I think the reason kids love creatures and especially creatures in games is because of their fantastical nature.
03:55they take you to another world, you don't see them in everyday life.
04:01So to come up against them and see how they actually move and how they react is something that kids
04:09really love.
04:18you
04:39Grazie.
