00:03I don't care who does it
00:07I don't care how they do it
00:13I just want the bat dead
00:20Ladies and gentlemen to talk about Batman from Warner Brothers Games Montreal
00:24Please welcome Eric Holmes
00:33Hey guys, how's it going?
00:38So I'm here to show you our behind the scenes demo
00:41currently happening behind closed doors at the Warner Brothers booth for Batman Arkham Origins
00:47And this isn't intimidating at all presenting in front of this versus a room of 24 people
00:53So we're going to show you a playable demo
00:56It's going to show you a young raw Batman
00:59roughly about two years into his career
01:01At this point in his career Batman is something of an urban myth
01:04He's not well understood by the establishment
01:06The criminals aren't really sure if he exists
01:08And the ones that do know he exists really regret meeting him
01:11The police department regard him as an outlaw
01:14Because a vigilante is illegal
01:15He doesn't have any friends in the police department
01:20And yeah, so we're going to showcase some new areas of the city
01:23We're going to showcase a bunch of new features
01:27Tonight, the game is set on Christmas Eve
01:29And tonight, the Black Mask, who's currently the biggest mobster in Gotham
01:33He's the most powerful crime lord by far
01:36He has the vastest resources
01:37He has the largest gang, the best equipped guys
01:39He has placed a bounty of $50 million on the Batman's head
01:44And he has brought eight of the greatest assassins
01:47The most talented killers of the DC universe
01:49To come here tonight for one night only
01:51To try and claim that prize on Batman's head
01:54So with that said, we're going to jump into the playable
01:56We're going to run a video
01:57And I'll jump in and highlight some features as we go
02:10Boss has got the biggest assassins there is
02:13Here, in Gotham
02:15All on the same night
02:16And all going after the same guy
02:18He mad as hell
02:20Wants the bat deader than dead
02:22I ain't never seen Black Mask like this
02:26I don't care who does it
02:28I don't care how they do
02:29I just want the bat deader than it
02:40Wake up
02:43What the?
02:44What happened?
02:53Time to talk
02:54Where's Black Mask?
02:57Let me go
02:57Se sei un'assistica.
03:09Por favor, stop! Stop!
03:12Mi raccomando!
03:13Mi raccomando!
03:14Mi raccomando tutto quello che vuoi!
03:15Por favor!
03:16È troppo tardi.
03:18Ho già quello che ho bisogno.
03:20No!
03:20No!
03:25You're crazy!
03:27You're making crazy!
03:30There you are.
03:52The gameplay in our demo here starts off in the south island of South Gotham.
04:02It's a larger, more majestic area of Gotham than you saw in Arkham City.
04:08It's taller and the buildings have a lot of interconnections between them.
04:12So you can see a new movement style offered to Batman using his grappling blade movement style.
04:25One of the things you're going to see in this demo is a lot more variety in terms of what's
04:29going on in the open world.
04:31And what sort of options are available to Batman.
04:33Yeah!
04:34Keep screaming buddy!
04:35Ain't no one's coming!
04:36Not in this city!
04:38And not on Christmas Eve!
04:41Hehehehe!
04:42Guys!
04:42Where's Frank?
04:43Taking a leak!
04:44What's up?
04:45Are you kidding me?!
04:58Your gonna be a long time?
05:00Yeah!
05:01Yeah!
05:05Oh!
05:06Ugh!
05:06Ugh!
05:07Ugh!别ent
05:08role of player of player! Yeah!
05:09gonna be a long time for you. Yeah!
05:10Ugh!
05:10Ugh!
05:10Ugh!
05:10Hm!
05:12Ugh!
05:14Ugh!
05:15Uh!
05:15Ugh!
05:52che sono spreadato all over Gotham,
05:54e che possono passare a navigare all'inizio all'inizio.
06:10Quindi,
06:12è il CRIME.
06:40Il CRIME.
06:40Il CRIME.
07:08stile come batman in that batman can counter enemies and also strike them
07:12well this guy can counter batman and batman can counter his counters so we
07:18get a little bit of a rock paper scissors game going with these guys which
07:20is a little bit deeper than the regular group fighting and it shows just how
07:24skilled and how badass batman is
07:45so
08:11Grazie.
08:41Grazie.
08:41There, that should do it.
08:42So for the purposes of E3, we're going to follow on back on the main story, following up on Black
08:46Mask.
08:47But in the full game, the player can follow up at any point, continue to follow up the path to
08:51anarchy, follow the trail of evidence and story towards him, and take him down to get that upgrade.
08:56You can see here just how much taller our South Gotham Island is and how much more majestic it is
09:04than the previous spaces you've seen in the other games.
09:06I think that's something that's really fun to navigate around.
09:32What we're going to demo now is the new detective gameplay, the case file gameplay in Arkham Origin.
09:39What this is, is this is an expansion of the Batman detective experience.
09:43Batman could previously detect things and track evidence, but now he's going to use a system of sensors in the
09:49cowl and the super computing power of the Batcave, the Batcomputer back in the Batcave, and he's going to reconstruct
09:54the crimes in real time using the evidence that he finds.
09:57And that lets him track down who's behind each crime and bring them to justice.
10:02It's also a very cool, very Hollywood way of visualizing a crime which we think is just a really fun
10:07thing to see.
10:08But what caused him to lose control?
10:10This is where we start to step into the interactive storytelling because the player can actually scrub through the scene.
10:16He can play it backwards, he can rewind it, and he can also start playing it forwards and looking for
10:21more evidence.
10:23He can pause it at any time.
10:39I can analyze the first point of impact from here.
10:55The helicopter's tail rotor was severed when the fuselage hit the building.
11:00I should review the crime scene and find that tail rotor.
11:05So here he is, he's scrubbing back through here again.
11:09And he's coming back to that point of contact with whatever it was that damaged the helicopter.
11:14And he's going to follow the tail boom through the simulation to find where the real tail boom is.
11:41The helicopter crashed when a high-powered round shattered the tail rotor.
11:45The ballistics analysis will lead me to the shooter's position.
11:54So here he is, he's going to rewind the whole helicopter back together.
11:57Now he's found the different pieces of it.
12:01And he's going to find out where that bullet came from.
12:03The bullet that shattered the tail of the helicopter.
12:10The storytelling and interactivity is kind of like peanut butter and chocolate.
12:16This doesn't add up.
12:17This man's a member of SWAT.
12:20It's a white-heat fire on a police helicopter.
12:30This man didn't fire in the helicopter.
12:33He was aiming at me.
12:35The ballistics trace indicates this officer was killed by a ricochet from the same round that took down the chopper.
12:41There's only one person capable of a shot like this.
12:45Deadshot.
12:47The trajectory analysis will lead me to Deadshot's firing position.
12:51But that'll have to wait.
12:52I need to get to the Gotham Royal and find Black Mask.
12:57So once again in the full game the player could choose to fall off on Deadshot and head out.
13:03Find a number of other pieces of evidence, crime scenes, track him down and confront him for another unique upgrade
13:09with him too.
13:09But what instead we're gonna do is we're gonna go into the Royal Hotel where Black Mask is hiding out.
13:15The thing we're gonna showcase in here is a new gadget.
13:18The new gadget's called the Remote Claw.
13:20Batman's gonna shoot a projectile that fires out and grabs onto an enemy and then launches another claw out from
13:26that.
13:27And then pulls the two things together.
13:29So we can use that to create navigation opportunities.
13:31You can use that to take down enemies.
13:33You can use that to launch objects or enemies at each other.
13:37It's a really fun gadget for an open world game.
14:03It's too much.
14:04It's okay.
14:05Get off!
14:09No!
14:11This is how you upper each other!
14:16This is a slightly overpowered version of the gadget we've made for E3 just to demo it.
14:21We wanted to make sure that you guys could see every way you could use it.
14:47They're in the penthouse.
14:49That's my next stop.
15:07Is that right?
15:07Oh, I can't do this.
15:10I feel like this is pretty gittiating!
15:10No, I can't.
15:11I can't do this.
15:13You can't do this.
15:14You can find it, too.
15:14I need you, but...
15:15I need you to draw it.
15:16What you need?
15:16You can plug this over the circle.
15:19Buongiorno a te darvi in

21:49Sì.
21:51Sì.
21:52Sì.
21:53more than that today. This is our first public outing here at E3. This is the first chance
21:58for people to see the gameplay. We're not showing everything today, but I think we're
22:02showing a pretty dense barrage of new features for Batman, for enemies, for open world, and
22:08a whole bunch of story surprises too. Let's talk some more about the new stuff. Let's
22:11talk about this enhanced detective mode. Previously in detective mode it was very much like throw
22:16the visor on and let's find what we need to find. You guys have added a video component
22:21to this thing. A crime scene component to this thing. Let's not undersell what Rocksteady
22:25did though. They definitely had a bunch of detective stuff that made it feel like you were Batman,
22:29you were tracking down, you were following trails, you were analyzing things to follow directions,
22:33but the thing that we've tried to add to that is to bring in more of a question of mystery
22:38to them, more of a sense rather than I have to find, I have to follow a trail, which was
22:42predominantly how it was realized before. It's more like what happened here? Ask you a question
22:46and have you start to figure it out at the same time you're finding this evidence and you're
22:50seeing these really lush visual reconstructions as the back computer is synthesizing based
22:55on the evidence that you found what actually took place. So we have a number of these in
23:01the game. Some are small. Some are small and simple. Some are, this is a large epic one
23:06that you saw here at E3. Some of them are deeply mysterious. I would imagine that some of them
23:10are connected. You don't find out things about certain crimes for a very long time. I don't want to ruin
23:17anything. Sure. Because I think if I told you too much about them, when you got to them in the
23:21game,
23:21you wouldn't have fun with them. But I think the essence of what happened here and trying to figure
23:27it out and getting an aha moment in there is very powerful. And I think that's the core of what's
23:33been added to the detective experience with that there. Getting a, I think it's this. Oh my God,
23:38it's not that. It's this. And then the rush you get as the ideas start to connect. And I think
23:42that's
23:42especially cool when you consider our, our prequel setting too, because we have characters who in
23:49many cases aren't fully who they will eventually become. Yeah. And so trying to get to guess who
23:55might be in the game and who might be behind something and how it might connect with who they
23:59will later become, I think is a really, it's a really good collection of lenses focusing on one point
24:05to make for a really satisfying experience. Yeah. And you're bringing in a lot of new characters too.
24:08And you know, one thing that I've always loved about the Arkham games is different villains bring
24:13different gameplay and different mission types to the mix. And we've seen Deathstroke, we've seen
24:18Deadshot. We know that the penguin is back in there. What kind of gameplay do these new villains bring
24:25to the game? What happens when you go up against Deathstroke? Well, Deathstroke, what can I say?
24:31I don't think we've shown that boss game yet. So I don't think I can actually
24:34explain what I do. I think that's a little bit, we're going to keep that under wraps
24:37until we show that for real. But you're, I will tell you that you're right. Each one of
24:41these guys is built around an idea, uh, tying to the core game mechanics. And one thing,
24:46one thing I will say for, for our boss games is that I think our, our team fell in love
24:52with
24:52what Mr. Freeze did in Arkham City. Yeah. Mr. Freeze boss fight was fantastic. And I think the
24:57reason it was so strong was because there was the core stealth mechanics of the game. You've
25:01been lurking, you've been hiding, you've been going into corner cover, you've been going
25:04into shafts or doing blade kicks. And maybe you were paying attention to some of those
25:08things. Yeah. Maybe you've learned a few of those tricks. And then when you go up against
25:11Mr. Freeze, you have to use all of them. And it's the exam that you, maybe you've been
25:14studying for a little bit along the way. And then, you know, I, I, I, I test myself as
25:20to how engaged I am in a gameplay experience with my palms get sweaty, right? And my palms got
25:24super sweaty, Mr. Freeze, because he was, he was making me really, oh God, what, what did I learn? How
25:29do I use this? Oh, oh. And if you can fake yourself out with that and you made the game,
25:33that definitely says something.
25:34Well, that was Arkham City. That was Arkham City. No, I'm saying in these new ones. Sure. Well, well, that's
25:39the philosophy we try to embrace. So our boss games will principally be around core mechanics. Realized with that boss,
25:47that's kind of an exam around those mechanics.
25:49Very cool. And so, um, I think you'll see more of that Mr. Freeze spirit through all of our bosses.
25:53That's great. Uh, we're also getting some new toys. I know some of this detective mode takes place in the
25:58Batcave.
25:58What are we, what are we doing in a Batcave? Like, well, the Batcomputer is back at the Batcave. We
26:03actually haven't made any announcements about the Batcave.
26:05Okay. So, who knows? I mean, maybe, maybe there'll be something there. Well, well, we do know there's a Batwing.
26:11We've seen a Batwing.
26:12We do. There's a Batwing. The Batwing is a fast travel system. Okay. Whereby we can, um, travel to various
26:17shortcut points around Gotham.
26:18And there's actually a gameplay around a hacker, which has not been named, who is taking control of these various
26:24radio towers across the sea,
26:26which doesn't allow the Batwing to go near them because its systems get jammed. So there's a, there's a game
26:31system connecting, taking over those towers,
26:33reverting them back to their original state, switching off this jamming signal, and now you can fast travel through that
26:38location.
26:38Very cool. So you have territory ownership, you have a sense of progression.
26:41Almost similar to, uh, to a Far Cry 3 radio tower thing. It's eerie that they actually had that in
26:46that game, because if you know anything about game development,
26:48schedules, there's no, you'll know there's no way we could have added that after we did that game.
26:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's funny that it turned up in there, too. It's, it's, there's a little bit of
26:55a similarity.
26:55So something else I want to know is, uh, kind of a hallmark of the Arkham series is, has been
27:00other playable characters,
27:02whether it's in challenge missions or, like we saw with Catwoman, an entire campaign.
27:07Are we going to see the return of alternate characters and challenges? Are we going to see an alt character
27:12campaign?
27:13Well, there's already been one announced. And if you pre-order the game now, you get Deathstroke as a playable
27:17character.
27:18Cool. And you'll be playable through a series of challenges. Um, we have not made any announcements regarding anyone else,
27:23but, uh, who knows? There's, it's a long time until October 25th and we haven't announced everything for this game
27:29yet.
27:29Sure. So let's talk about the size of Gotham City now. Arkham City was huge. How big is Gotham now?
27:39Um, the Gotham that we see in Arkham Origins is roughly twice that size.
27:43Um, we're going to see whole new territories. We're going to see, um, also one of my favorite things about
27:49the game is, um,
27:51we wanted to bring a different mood to our world. And, um, obviously Arkham City is a prison and we
27:56are not a prison.
27:57Yeah. But, um, one of the things which I'm most happy about that is our game takes place on Christmas
28:01Eve.
28:01Yeah. So we get this wonderful, warm idea. You know, you think of your family.
28:06Yeah. You think of your folks. You think of gifts. You think of turkey. And like, it's a nice thing.
28:09Traditionally a very bad time to be Batman though. Right. Well, Christmas Eve, you have this set in Gotham.
28:15And now you have this warm idea set against this incredibly, um, black lung of a place, this dark corner,
28:23which is Gotham, right?
28:23Yeah. It's the worst place in the world on the happiest night of the year. So you have this really
28:28interesting contrast, which, which isn't,
28:29it's kind of darkly funny, but it's not against the theme. It doesn't rob the theme. In fact, I think
28:34it impresses the theme.
28:34It gives me like a, like a Batman Returns vibe, right? Like it kind of, I mean, obviously you're not
28:38going as campy as Batman Returns.
28:40But visually, I love that idea. Well, there have been many classic Batman stories told on Christmas, uh, Christmas Eve
28:47before.
28:47And, um, we're really happy to be very into video games. That's awesome. So let's... But not Batman Returns. Huh?
28:53But not like Batman Returns. But not like Batman Returns. So, uh, you guys also announced some stuff that's exclusive
28:58to PlayStation as well.
29:00That's right. What, what do we get as, as PlayStation players when we pick up Arkham Origins?
29:03For the PlayStation, there will be two exclusives. One of them, sorry, there is one exclusive with two skins, I
29:09believe. Gotcha.
29:10The two skins are, there's the Azrael Batman, which is, uh, also short-hand known by fans as Azbat.
29:16So it's an armored version of Batman, which is associated with, uh, a very pivotal story in Batman.
29:21Yeah, the Jean-Paul Valley Nightfall, like, yeah. Exactly. So that's the, the Nightfall storyline, where he went up against
29:26Bane.
29:26And there will be a number of challenge maps associated with that, which feature going up against Bane's gang.
29:31That's so cool. That's so cool.
29:33So we're working really hard to realize a version of it which is appropriate for that character.
29:37Another, uh, exclusive, which I think will be a big hit with fans, is the 1960s Batman skin.
29:42Yes. So it's the Adam West costume, as worn by our Batman, uh, which looks way more badass than it
29:49has any right to do.
29:50And I think fans will love that.
29:51That's awesome, man. Well, Eric, thank you so much for coming by, talking Batman.
29:56Thanks for having me. This thing looks so awesome.
29:57I could talk Batman all day, but I guess I have to go now.
30:00Coming up a bit later, we have Hohokum, but first let's take a look at the trailer for Splice.
30:08When I was looking the villain for the camera, we will show you a little bit of view on the
30:15background.
30:15It's sort of time for the film, I'm totally so sorry for the camera.
30:18You have to go now.
30:22I have to be very excited about what you have to do with the camera.
30:23So you know everyone else?
30:26I am so sorry for the camera.
30:27I know everyone else.
30:51Grazie a tutti.
31:35Grazie a tutti.
31:37Grazie a tutti.
