00:00The story that we, we must force
00:05The gigantic battle, fought by twenty
00:10The death of the dead, by the will of the vici
00:13To stare, to stare, to retreat from a madman
00:17Remember, we reject things
00:20The road, the world does not come true, it does not go
00:25Until war and death and victory have been invaded
01:12It was the work of the poor, of the displaced
01:15Of those who had lost everything
01:17And who sought among the wounds of the earth an opportunity
01:20Almost a compensation for the immense suffering endured
01:24They left home with a shovel and a pickaxe
01:26They brought with them a piece of cheese and some bread.
01:29For three, four days
01:31They slept in caves
01:33And then they went down to the valley with heavy loads on their shoulders
01:36They were the recoverers
01:38Men who after the First World War
01:41They went to the plateaus and mountains
01:43To collect war remnants
01:45Where war had previously brought death to families
01:49And then left a legacy of metal on the ground
01:51The earth had swallowed millions of shell casings
01:54Of grenade shrapnel
01:55Of pieces of barbed wire
01:57Of unexploded projectiles
01:59Fragments that now became copper, brass, lead
02:02To be sold at the country weighbridge
02:04To earn something
02:06We recovered to eat
02:07But also to reclaim the land
02:09And be able to cultivate them again
02:15In a few springs
02:17All the furrows of despair will disappear
02:20And the bites of the fierce iron
02:23And the thorny tangles
02:24Which still disfigure this plateau
02:27Thus, the writer from Trieste
02:30Gianni Stuparic
02:31He was writing on his way back from that war
02:33Who had taken her brother away
02:34It will take more than a few springs
02:36And when the peasant families
02:38Evacuees from the villages
02:39They return to their lands
02:41On which the war passed
02:42They ask themselves
02:43How can they be done?
02:44Plow again
02:45Our fields
02:46How can it be done?
02:48Return to life
03:00In a predominantly peasant country
03:03Like Italy a hundred years ago
03:04Return to life
03:06It means first of all
03:07Being able to cultivate the land
03:11Reset fields
03:12Land for pastures
03:13It's an absolute priority
03:18The first recovery of material
03:20It is done by the army
03:22He's the genius
03:23To organize its removal
03:25Mainly aimed at
03:26To render explosives harmless
03:28To civilians
03:29It is forbidden to put your hand in
03:30To the war remnants
03:32But the ban
03:33It will soon be broken
03:34It's impossible
03:35Keep people away
03:36From that expanse of wreckage
03:37At the doorstep
03:38Which can transform
03:39As a source of sustenance
03:41For entire families
03:43The first materials
03:45With which they managed to get through
03:46The winters
03:47And the first months after the war
03:49They were the ones that were torn away
03:51To the soldiers
03:52That they had gone
03:53Let's talk about shacks
03:54The trench stoves
03:56The roofs of the shacks
03:57And also many tools
03:59Used by the military
04:00What are the field kitchens?
04:01The provisions
04:02Everything was used
04:04From civilians
04:05For the first sustenance
04:07For the first few months
04:08Of sustenance
04:09In those areas
04:09Where there was absolutely nothing
04:11If not destruction
04:13And dead soldiers everywhere
04:27In the beginning
04:28The recoverers
04:29They dedicate themselves
04:30At the harvest
04:31Of noble metals
04:32Those who weigh
04:33They are worth more
04:34Copper
04:35The brass
04:35Lead
04:39In the second half
04:41From the 30s
04:41After the sanctions
04:42To Mussolini's Italy
04:43For the assault
04:44To Ethiopia
04:45The value of ferrous materials
04:47It undergoes a surge
04:51We go back then
04:52On the mountains
04:53In search of iron
04:54In addition to recovering
04:56Digging
04:56A systematic process begins
04:58Dismantling work
04:59Of the strong
05:02All stable structures
05:04They were re-assaulted
05:05From the recoverers
05:06And dismantled
05:08To use
05:09The iron
05:09That was
05:09Stuck
05:11In the concrete
05:16That too
05:17It was reused
05:18The domes
05:19Some batteries
05:20Self-propelled guns
05:22That they were so strong
05:23If they weren't already
05:24Were taken away
05:25From the military genius
05:26In the early years
05:27Post-war
05:28Various pieces
05:29That had blown up
05:30They were actually stolen
05:31Because they had
05:33A huge weight
05:33And reused
05:34Taken to the plains
05:36And sent back
05:37In the foundries
05:41Subioti
05:42And spaghetti
05:42They are two types of pasta
05:44But like this
05:45They were called
05:46Even depending on
05:47Of the form
05:47Two types of charges
05:49That they were found
05:50Inside the shells
05:51Two nicknames
05:52Data from the boys
05:53Yes
05:54Why some recoverers
05:55I'm a little more
05:56What children
05:57The fathers follow
05:58The grandparents
05:59Through the woods
05:59They look at them
06:00As they slip in
06:01Among the trees
06:02Looking for traces
06:15When they find
06:16The find
06:17His eyes shine
06:18They caress him
06:19And they free him
06:19Very quietly
06:20From the earth
06:20They almost seem
06:21Some archaeologists
06:22What are they looking for?
06:23A buried treasure
06:29The recovery
06:30It's a job
06:30But also an art
06:31The art
06:32To recognize metals
06:33To sniff out the spot
06:34Where to go digging
06:35But above all
06:36The art
06:37Not to blow up
06:38For a bomb
06:39Handled at sea
06:43For some
06:44It's an adventure
06:44For others
06:45From a very young age
06:46It's a must-take path
06:48Large families
06:49Poor work
06:50And everywhere
06:51The spectre of misery
06:52It's history
06:53By Rolando Lancedelli
06:55Class of 1927
06:57Ampezzo
06:57Recuperating by necessity
06:59From the age of 10
07:02Himself
07:03After many years of work
07:05When now
07:05The misery is over
07:06It will really become
07:07An archaeologist
07:08Digging in the earth
07:10He will find very ancient fossils
07:11Fossils
07:12What are they talking to us?
07:13When the Dolomites
07:14They were submerged by the waters
07:16And that they remind us
07:17That those slopes
07:18Those rocky massifs
07:19That a hundred years ago
07:20The soldiers
07:21They were blowing up
07:22With dynamite
07:23They had employed
07:24Thousands of years
07:25To form
07:34All the Dolomites
07:35They were under
07:37Under the water
07:38They were built
07:40Made by the sea
07:42And then
07:43Raise up
07:44And we see them
07:45Up high now
07:46Digging the foundations
07:49Of the refuge
07:50He came up
07:52A stone
07:53A stone
07:53That was different
07:55From everyone
07:56It was a fossil coral
07:58And we still search
08:01If there are others
08:02Because it was very interesting
08:04And then
08:06The whole family
08:07We were looking for
08:10In addition to
08:11Of relics
08:12Of the war
08:13Even fossils
08:41I was ten
08:43Eleven years
08:44When I started
08:46They were my uncles
08:47That were much older
08:49Which had already begun
08:54Much earlier
08:55One fine day
08:56They tell me
08:57You come too
08:58And collect something
09:00Of this metal
09:02To take home
09:04And since then
09:05Almost every day
09:06He was taking it down
09:08These metals
09:09I was looking for this way
09:10I had no equipment
09:13To dig further
09:15I was satisfied
09:17To turn
09:18On the scree slopes
09:19And collect
09:20This material
09:22I knew
09:23That certain orders
09:24It wasn't necessary
09:25Touch them
09:26But it wasn't
09:28That they gave me
09:29Lots of indications
09:30I had to
09:32Understand for myself
09:33Certain things
09:34They were not supposed to touch each other
09:37That they were dangerous
09:39When the backpacks
09:41They were quite full
09:4210, 15, 20 kilos
09:45We were going back home
09:47The further we went
09:49And the more it was found
09:51Why the nearby areas
09:53They were comfortable for everyone
10:12The recoverers
10:13They were piling up the material
10:15At collection points
10:16The trucks arrived there
10:18The traders
10:19Of the Fondovalle companies
10:21They were going down
10:21And they took it out
10:22Large scales
10:23They divided the metals
10:25They weighed them
10:26And they paid
10:26The equivalent
10:27In cash
10:28Then they brought
10:29Everything in the foundry
10:4235 kg
10:43For 600 it's 20,000
10:45This time
10:46Yes, we are lines
10:48Come on let's start loading
10:52Look at Pino
10:55It made no difference
10:57If there was the bomb
10:58There was the sword
10:59There was the helmet
11:00There was the bayonet
11:00Because for the first recoveries
11:02It was just war material
11:04For sale
11:06Unfortunately
11:06They were merged
11:08In the steelworks
11:08Even pieces
11:09That today
11:10They would have a value
11:11Collectible
11:12Very high
11:12But at the time
11:13We looked at the weight
11:23Peio
11:23Peio is a ski resort
11:25Where today
11:25Italians and Austrians
11:26They share
11:27Passion for the mountains
11:28During the First World War
11:31In these same areas
11:32The soldiers of the two countries
11:33They fought each other
11:34Fiercely
11:35At heights
11:36Where the war
11:37It had never arrived
11:38In the snow
11:39And the rock walls
11:40Of the Presena glacier
11:41A glacier
11:43Which like many others
11:44He is retreating
11:45And it can happen
11:46So that the glacier
11:48Retreating
11:48You awaken two bodies
11:50They are stuck
11:51On a wall
11:52Steep and straight
11:53Like a wall
11:53At 3640 meters
11:55They get confused
11:56With the rocks
11:57On site
11:58Local authorities rush to the scene
12:00And scientists too
12:01It's not difficult
12:02Going back to the era
12:03Of death
12:04They are soldiers
12:05Of the First World War
12:06After almost 100 years
12:08The ice
12:09He kept
12:10Beyond the bodies
12:10Also part
12:11Of the uniforms
12:12The two soldiers
12:13Found again
12:14They are treated
12:15With all due care
12:15Transported
12:16In the laboratories
12:17Subordinates
12:18To all the analyses
12:19That science
12:20Today it allows
12:20Today
12:21Those soldiers
12:22They will have a dignified burial
12:39The recoverers
12:40That they went to collect
12:42On the mountains
12:42Metal materials
12:43To then resell the valley
12:45They were also looking for the bodies
12:46Of the fallen
12:47The remains
12:48Some soldiers
12:48They were paid
12:49From the State
12:5020 lire
12:51More or less
12:52The daily wage
12:53Of a worker
12:53Death
12:54Then it was everywhere
12:56In family memory
12:57And in the earth
12:58Those bones
12:59They didn't make an impression
13:01Not much more
13:01To bury them
13:03It was a way
13:03To earn one's day
13:05And no wonder
13:06That to have
13:07A few more lire
13:08The people
13:08Separate the remains
13:10Of a corpse
13:10Splitting it in two
13:11The alleged identities
13:12Two arms
13:13Two bodies
13:14So
13:1540 lire
13:16As long as the authorities
13:17Miserable order
13:18In the exhumations
13:19And they regulated the compensations
13:21Sentencing
13:22From now on
13:23The heads are in charge
13:33I saw these
13:34Recoverers
13:36That they were digging
13:37They were pulling up
13:38All these bodies
13:39They took them away
13:41And they brought here
13:43The shrine
13:44It wasn't that they mattered
13:47The whole body
13:48They counted the skull
13:49How many were there?
13:51And the rest
13:52That was all
13:53Faces
13:54All
13:55As
13:56To be thrown away
13:57There
14:15The bodies
14:16They were scattered
14:17Along the front
14:18Not being able to
14:19Bury them
14:20In certain situations
14:21In which the attack
14:22It was imminent
14:23The comrades
14:23They buried them
14:24Where and how could they
14:25Often using
14:26The holes
14:27Some grenades
14:28And not always
14:29They put a cross
14:30To locate
14:31The burial
14:32Years later
14:33The recoverers
14:35They found themselves
14:35In front of
14:36To bodies
14:37Fun everywhere
14:51And above all
14:52And above all
14:52Over the years
14:52Thirty
14:53When fascism
14:54Make the big ones
14:54Ossuaries
14:55That we proceed
14:56To transport
14:56Of the bodies
14:57Of the fallen
14:57From the small cemeteries
14:59Of the countries
14:59To the greats
15:00Shrines
15:01Monumental
15:01But very many
15:03They are the soldiers
15:04Whose remains
15:04They remained
15:05In the place
15:05Of their death
15:06Or their first
15:07hasty burial
15:30They just passed by
15:31Twenty years
15:32From the end
15:32Of the First World War
15:33When Europe
15:35It sinks
15:35In a new conflict
15:36Even more terrible
15:43Italy comes out exhausted
15:45From five years of war
15:46Many cities
15:47They have been heavily
15:49Damaged
15:49From the air raids
15:50The infrastructures
15:52They are all
15:52To be rebuilt
15:53The production
15:54Industrial
15:54Collapsed
15:55Inflation
15:56To the stars
15:57It's spreading
15:57The black market
15:58In this context
16:00Of widespread misery
16:01For many
16:02The only way
16:03It's emigration
16:04The activity
16:04Der recovery
16:05He knows then
16:06A new season
16:07To avoid leaving
16:09In many
16:10They return to the mountains
16:11Seeking fortune
16:12HI
16:13HI
16:16Perhaps
16:16There would be a possibility
16:18What possibilities?
16:20To stay here
16:20Not to leave
16:21There would also be a way
16:22To make a few pennies
16:24But what kind of job would that be?
16:25In short, I work
16:26It wouldn't be exactly
16:27An updated work
16:28It would be more than anything else
16:29A lucky job
16:30Fortune?
16:31It would be a matter of pulling up
16:33A material from this
16:34Bombs
16:35Bombs
16:35That's what you find
16:36And you call this a job
16:38This is stuff to despair
16:39Because what are we?
16:42Could you be more desperate than this?
16:43The news is that
16:45The researchers
16:47They accompany each other
16:49To some metal detectors
16:50Made in America
16:51They are tools
16:53Fairly stable
16:54Heavy
16:54They have some
16:55Very heavy batteries
16:57But
16:57From research
16:58On sight
16:59Applied up to
17:00By then
17:01There is this news
17:02What brings
17:04To find
17:04Of the materials
17:05Buried
17:05Under half a meter
17:07Of land
17:08Of stones
17:08Of landslides
17:09We can say
17:10What happens next?
17:11At a later stage
17:12Of recovery
17:12A new phase
17:13What brings
17:15Always on the mend
17:17Of the same materials
17:18From the first hour
17:19But
17:20A further cleaning
17:22Of what was the front
17:23And more widespread
17:24Deeper
17:28Listen to that music
17:31Who knows what's underneath
17:34Here you are
17:36We put this thing here
17:37That it doesn't fall to the ground
17:38That it's all full of shit
17:41After you
17:42Pass me the peak
17:42On
18:07But what is there?
18:08Here are tables
18:10What kind of tables are you crazy?
18:11These are cassettes
18:13Dig
18:13Dig
18:14Dig
18:14Dig
18:17I'm singing a pig
18:18This time we found
18:20A deposit
18:22This
18:23It was a post
18:24Of machine gun
18:26Have you seen?
18:27This trap
18:28Eh
18:28What I was telling you
18:29He looked at his eyes better
18:30Of a person
18:41With the help
18:43The detector too
18:44That now we help each other
18:46A bit'
18:47With those tools
18:48And my wife
18:50Precisely
18:50He saw a shoe
18:52Rising from the earth
18:53And he pulls her up
18:55And he looks at her
18:57And they fall out
18:58The little bones
18:59Of the foot
19:00Then he calls me
19:02And I'm going down
19:03With the pickaxe
19:04And I start digging
19:06And it came out
19:07A skeleton
19:25In the mid 1950s
19:26The Italian economy
19:28It's back on track
19:29The mountain
19:30It's no longer just
19:31Destination of aristocrats
19:32Holidays
19:33Tourism development
19:34Of the mountain resorts
19:36It gives a strong boost
19:37To the construction industry
19:37Which absorbs
19:38Most of it
19:39Of local labor
19:42Many people
19:43He addressed himself
19:45More towards
19:45A job
19:46Less risky
19:48More profitable
19:49And less crazy
19:50Because it was already considered
19:51A crazy job
19:52That of going
19:53For bombs
19:55And to unload them
19:56To then resell them
19:57Tourism
19:58We can say
19:59What was
19:59The first
20:01Stop
20:02And he gave the first stop
20:03To what had been
20:05An activity
20:05For almost 40 years
20:07In the 60s
20:08The recovery
20:09It ends
20:10As an activity
20:12Working
20:12Maybe even 5-10 years earlier
20:15But there is someone
20:16Which continues
20:17To wander around
20:18For the front
20:18In search
20:19Of the material
20:30When I got married
20:32I started
20:33To go up
20:34With his wife
20:35Up the mountains
20:36We were going to do it
20:38These beautiful trips
20:39And it was collected
20:40Then they arrived
20:42The firstborn
20:44Loris
20:44And then it arrived
20:46The second born
20:48Graziano
20:48And him too
20:49We've gone
20:50Up the mountains
20:52And they went together
20:53All the children
20:54With his wife
20:55And the dad
21:15Tuna with peas
21:17Tomato preserve
21:18Anchovy fillet
21:19In spicy sauce
21:21There are 200 million of them
21:22Only the cans
21:24Of meat
21:24Distributed to Italian soldiers
21:26During the First World War
21:27There are those too
21:29With a patriotic flavour
21:30Like the appetizer
21:31Very fine
21:32Trento and Trieste
21:33Many of these
21:34They remained
21:35In the earth
21:36Of the battlefields
21:37And today they are wanted
21:39Collectibles
21:40Along with the lighters
21:41To the haversacks
21:42To the buckles
21:43And to the other treasures
21:44What they are looking for
21:45Today's recoverers
21:47It's not just
21:48The chromatic suggestion
21:49Of interest to collectors
21:51But above all
21:52The thought
21:52Of the conditions
21:53Where those tin boxes
21:55They were consumed
21:56Cans
21:57Open with the tip
21:58Of the bayonet
21:59From supported soldiers
22:00On the parapet
22:01Of a trench
22:02Frozen by the cold
22:03With arms made clumsy
22:04From heavy overcoats
22:06Cans
22:07Opened in a hurry
22:08To calm the agitated
22:09Of hunger
22:09Which together with fear
22:11They attacked the stomach
22:12In the long nights
22:13Waiting
22:14If you are hungry
22:16Look
22:18Far away
22:22If you have
22:24If you have
22:25If you have
22:25The cup
22:28The hand
22:32If you have
22:34If you have
22:35If you have
22:36If you have
22:37The cup
22:38The cup
22:39The cup
22:45This is what remains
22:46After the explosion
22:47Of the grenade
22:48There are signs
22:49That was shot
22:50This is the copper rod
22:52And this is the body
22:53Of the bullet
22:55And in here
22:56There was
22:56The tritorolo
22:57Which made the shot explode
23:06Today this activity
23:07It is without a doubt
23:08A passion
23:10A passion
23:11What is inside you
23:12The desire to discover
23:13What else is there?
23:14Under the ground
23:16Rebuild
23:17How soldiers lived
23:18Discover
23:19What did they do?
23:21What did they eat?
23:22What tools
23:23They brought from home
23:24What was their life like?
23:25Why be a recoverer
23:26It means to carry on
23:28The tradition
23:28It means to enhance
23:30The territory
23:31Where one lives
23:32And it means
23:38Remembering history
23:39For what it was
23:44While at the beginning
23:45There were tons
23:46Of material
23:47Today
23:48The new seekers
23:49They have to be satisfied
23:50Of the objects
23:52In fact, a backpack is enough
23:54Not very roomy
23:54To find
23:56The fun
23:56Of an exit
23:58For modern recoverers
24:00That I'm a little
24:01Collectors
24:01A little bit of seekers
24:02The dream
24:03That would be it
24:04To wake up
24:04In an area of the front
24:06In the first few months
24:06Post-war
24:07So in 19
24:09When the ground
24:10It's a joke
24:11Of finds
24:12When they passed
24:13Just a few weeks
24:14A few months
24:15From the retreat
24:16Of those who lost the war
24:17And from the advancement
24:18Of those who did not stop
24:20To collect
24:20What was there
24:21On the triceas
24:22But he was chasing
24:23The enemy on the run
24:25They are often found
24:26Some small splinters
24:28Lean on the stones
24:29Why
24:30They are found
24:31The water makes them come out
24:32From the ground
24:33And they are left there
24:34Instead we
24:35We bring them home
24:36Because after all
24:36It's right
24:37The first thing
24:38It's not fair
24:39See them above the rocks
24:40Throw it there
24:40Second thing
24:42There is also a way
24:42To enhance them
24:49It happens that sometimes
24:50Recoverers
24:51Very often
24:52Even when they go
24:53They find a lot of iron
24:54In the woods
24:54Splinters
24:55Bomb pieces
24:56Pieces of grenade
24:57Remnants of barracks
24:59And so
25:00There he is
25:03They carry these pieces
25:05To me
25:05And I'm having fun
25:06To assemble them
25:07And create sculptures
25:11This is a grenade
25:12The wheels
25:13They are the interiors
25:14Some grenades
25:15Here we have
25:16A stake
25:17Of the tent
25:18Some nails
25:20Here they are
25:21Italian bullets
25:23Here I used
25:24A spoon
25:25As a mudguard
25:25The piece
25:26Of a stove
25:29These are
25:30Of the Italian grenades
25:32They called themselves
25:32Sippe
25:34These are not things
25:35To be thrown away
25:36Because they are the memories
25:37Of those who fought
25:38Whose fell
25:39Here in our mountains
25:40That here with us
25:41Almost all
25:41They had grandparents
25:42In the mountain
25:52The danger
25:53Of this activity
25:54That's it
25:54To find
25:56Dangerous objects
25:58What are the bullets?
25:59The grenades
25:59Still loaded
26:01And in fact
26:02The recoverers
26:04Capacci
26:05They are very careful
26:06To touch them
26:06When it is found
26:07A grenade
26:08Which seems intact
26:10You leave it there
26:10And they warn each other
26:12The competent authorities
26:24But it happens often
26:26That some recovering
26:27Want to feel smarter
26:29Better
26:30More experienced
26:30And desire
26:31To enrich
26:32His collection
26:33Try to open
26:34Download
26:35To keep at home
26:36These objects
26:37But it often happens
26:38That someone
26:39It leaves its skin behind
26:43A thread of death
26:45Tie the war
26:46Warfare
26:46From 1915
26:47To war
26:49Remained asleep
26:50Under the ground
26:50For the following decades
26:52Invisible
26:53Silent
26:54Yet ready
26:55To explode
26:56And to write
26:56New names
26:57On new tombstones
26:58They died
26:59So many
27:00Of recovering
27:00They died
27:02Many
27:04All those
27:05What they wanted
27:05Get your hands on it
27:06All those
27:07What they wanted
27:09Download
27:10And besides
27:11It was like this
27:11If you wanted to sell
27:12The iron
27:12The bombs
27:13You didn't sell them
27:13Charges
27:14But you sold them
27:14Exploded
27:19At Ponte La Stua
27:20At the feet
27:21Of Mount Grappa
27:22There is a tombstone
27:23On which they are engraved
27:24Seven names
27:25Two of the seven
27:26They have the same last name
27:27Ludovico De Paoli
27:29And Vittorio De Paoli
27:30That tombstone
27:31So similar
27:32To many
27:32Of those
27:33That they remember
27:33The fallen
27:34Of the Great War
27:35It's a tribute
27:35To the recoverers
27:36From the area
27:37Deaths due to
27:38Of orders
27:39Unexploded
27:40Louis
27:41And Vittorio De Paoli
27:42They died
27:42At work
27:43In Italy
27:44From the 50s
27:44On the eve
27:46Of the economic miracle
27:47But all this
27:48It can happen
27:48Even today
27:49When no one
27:50He dedicates himself more
27:51On recovery
27:51Out of necessity
27:52But only
27:53For passion
27:57It's rusty
27:58It's worth nothing
27:59Vale
28:00It is worth remembering
28:01It is worth remembering
28:02Of the war
28:03The memory
28:03Of the past day
28:04To look for it
28:05I still like to go
28:07And I'm going there
28:09When I can
28:10It's always nice
