00:07One of my philosophies when casting and designing the voices for these characters in the game
00:11is to first take a look at how the characters have been portrayed in spoken word media
00:15The secret to getting the best performance out of the actor is casting
00:19If you have the right actor in the booth playing the right character, your job is
00:2490% done. We work very closely with Marvel and they kind of tell us
00:27how they envision the sound of these voices should be as well.
00:30A lengthy script of lines that they will use when interacting with enemies
00:34and with friends. Let's hustle!
00:36We fly down to Los Angeles and work at a studio called Studiopolis
00:40who handles tons of Marvel stuff in addition to our game
00:43There's definitely some actors and some voices that are going to be recognized in this game
00:46Our Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, all these voices have appeared
00:50in other games or other animations.
00:53I'm really, really grateful to be able to play Wolverine over again
00:56and make sure that my Wolverine is true for the fans too
01:00It's a lot of fun, you know, there's a lot of ad-libbing, there's a lot of improv
01:03Your eyes really are blue!
01:05On top of the lines are really well written
01:07We kind of sculpted what the voice should sound like
01:10We came up with just the right amount of evil and pompousness
01:14You insipid trolls!
01:15After you've established the character from a first session, the next sessions
01:19for me just seem to come, I can tap into any character that I need to
01:22once I've already done him or her, even once
01:24and then you just bring them out, they just come out to play
01:26They have such great experience playing these characters
01:29They know the characters inside and out
01:31I've got more where that came from
01:32With video games I'm always recording alone
01:35When you're in the booth, it's you and it's your lines
01:37You show up, there's a script in front of you
01:40Typically we've been doing it for so long that we actually don't even need an advance
01:43And in a video game the scripts are gigantic
01:45You kind of just like go down the page
01:47Usually it's obvious what's going on
01:50Generally we record just in one giant recording file
01:53We don't stop a lot during the session
01:55Your lines are categorized into hits
01:59Boosting up
02:00Thanks for the boost
02:01Player has selected you
02:02Greetings, comrade
02:03It's a wonderful challenge to the creative imagination
02:06Because you don't have all the visuals
02:08You have to, you have to supply that with your voice
02:10And you give them three completely different takes
02:12So they have something to choose from
02:14And be able to deliver, you know, lines with sarcasm
02:18Or wryness or dry wit
02:20And know what the difference between the three of them all are
02:23It always kind of turns out that the first time you record it
02:26It usually is more spontaneous and more true to character
02:28It's pretty fast paced
02:30Often on the spot they'll come up with other lines
02:32Or something will change and you have to really be ready to jump in
02:34It's really exciting
02:35We have good relationships with these actors
02:37We know each other very well
02:39So a lot of the direction can be done with shorthand
02:41Asking an actor to billboard a certain section of his dialogue
02:44Or a certain word just means to give that word or that section a little lift
02:48Ooh, blunder!
02:49They'll use analogies in life and they'll say like a little more musical
02:52Sometimes they'll have to say take the music out of it
02:55Just more like conversation like talking like this
02:57Instead of talking like this
02:59Throw it away just means don't make so much of it
03:01Less acting
03:02And then throw it away
03:03Don't mess with mutants
03:04Really it's just a quick way for us to get exactly what we want
03:07One of the big challenges about doing these games
03:09With a lot of fighting in them
03:11Is being careful to not burn the actor out
03:15No one!
03:16Even when my voice is a little tired
03:18I can still go into the character's voice
03:20Yeah, I mean anytime you have to do this for four hours straight
03:23And then yell on top of that
03:24And yell again and again and again
03:26Especially in the games
03:26You want to schedule that at the end of your day
03:29Sometimes I actually put Steve's face in my head
03:32When I'm making fun of Wolverine
03:33And we laugh about it all the time
03:35With the thing, the touchstone for me is my Uncle Joe
03:38Hey shorty!
03:39That's how I remember Uncle Joe
03:41I would often close my eyes and imagine the scene
03:44You know, swinging through the city
03:46Whatever was happening
03:46So it's a physical thing
03:48Part of being a voice actor
03:49I think you have to sort of be schizophrenic
03:52And a little rocker
03:53And I'm a little bit of both of those
03:54You can't take a psychopath like Deadpool home with you
03:57That's just not a good mix
03:58We just like to leave them in a little corner in a box
04:01Here at the studio
04:02Pull them out only when necessary
04:04After the recording is done
04:06And circle takes have been called out
04:08During the recording session
04:10A head and a tail is put on each circle take file
04:13Maybe some level adjustment
04:14Maybe some EQ adjustment
04:16Make them sound just right
04:17And we send them off to his owner
04:18We have a team of audio designers
04:19That pay really close attention
04:21To all of the different sound effects
04:22That have been established in other things
04:24So Spider-Man's webthwips sound like they should sound
04:27And then once they're implemented into the game
04:29You'll be able to hear the quips and sound effects
04:31And voices that you come to expect
04:33Right in the giblets
04:35The fact that a villain like M.O.D.O.K. is in the game
04:39Is really, really cool to me
04:41He's somebody who fans of Marvel Comics love
04:44But nobody outside of Marvel Comics knows who this guy is
04:47So they'll start getting insight into all the eight characters
04:50These gems
04:51It's not hard to get an immense depth of character range
04:55References here and there
04:57That makes that hardcore Marvel fan feel like
05:00This is the Marvel Universe I know
05:02Voice over plays a huge role in the game
05:04And for me it was because
05:06Now the voices in my head are actually
05:08Will be voices in your head
