00:19This is Dustforce, it's one of my personal favorite games
00:22that Capcom is bringing over to Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita in early 2014.
00:27I really couldn't be happier about it. I had a great time with it on PC.
00:31What kind of person do you recommend this game to?
00:33Well, people have asked,
00:36well that's weird, I've heard of Dustforce, why is Capcom publishing it?
00:39We tend to say it's got some pieces of platform DNA.
00:43It's a solid 2D platformer,
00:45it's Mega Man platforming run and jump,
00:48you get a little bit of that.
00:49The side slashes of Dustman and Dustgirl,
00:52or Dustwoman, are more than reminiscent of Strider slashes.
00:55And there's a precision and a hardcore element to it
00:58that I think is present in a lot of Capcom games.
01:01Yeah, you definitely get the feeling that the guys who created this
01:04have played at least a couple Capcom games.
01:06Yeah, it may not be fair to say the Hitbox team,
01:09it's all about Capcom games,
01:10but it's definitely that old school flavor that,
01:12you know, me personally, I think of Capcom
01:14when I play a game like Dustforce.
01:18It is a beautiful thing.
01:19The music might very well be my favorite original game music creation.

01:25Of like the last five years.
01:26It's really, really good.
01:27Hopefully I didn't turn it down because I was capturing video with this earlier.

01:59We had a little jankiness yesterday when we were doing our Throwback Thursday stream.

02:06Love this screen.
02:09It frames those guys to look like enemies,
02:11and it sort of occurred to me when I was writing about it recently
02:13that you don't really have enemies in Dustforce.
02:15You just have people momentarily possessed,
02:20taken over by the dust,
02:22and it's up to you and your acrobatic platforming skills as it is
02:25to rid them of that, to liberate them.
02:28And yeah, also I was working on a video focusing on like,
02:31Yeah, it looks like a cute, quirky platformer.
02:34You see a little dude running right to left,
02:36and you kind of have to see it close up to really understand what exactly is happening.
02:41I'm doing a little wall run there to access up there.
02:43I double jump with this character.
02:45There's four different characters.
02:46They all have different moves.
02:47I got a dash move.
02:48I got a light attack, heavy attack,
02:50and you'll see how this all comes into play,
02:52and I'll access the tutorial real quick,
02:56which it looks like I skipped during the last playthrough.
03:00So, yeah.
03:02What separates Dustforce from a normal platformer
03:05are these little leaves that you see.
03:07Trails of dust, slime, leaves, grime.
03:11That is actually what you're going for.
03:13It's not about going from point 8 to point B.
03:15It's about a combo you pull off on the environment itself.
03:18In a way, it reminds me a lot of like certain
03:21minigames in Tony Hawk.
03:23Oh, yeah.
03:23Yeah, like grind the line.
03:28And I love this song.
03:29I believe this is called 9-Bit Expedition.
03:33So, oh!
03:34Oh!
03:34Oh, no!
03:35But yeah, like that's little deaths.
03:38Boom.
03:39I love that about the game.
03:40I know Super Meat Boy fans are familiar with that.
03:43Yeah, that's sort of become like a sub-genre of platforming.
03:46It's a sort of instant respawn super challenging kind of game.
03:52Or even like not just platformers.
03:53You look at something like Hotline Miami.
03:55Sort of a similar spirit.
03:57Oh, I missed it.
03:58It's going to kick your butt, but you will prevail
04:01if you just keep giving it your best.
04:05Bam.
04:06And that's a little tricky one.
04:08I had to try and hit a wall run there to get those leaves on the side.
04:11But just to show you, sorry, you can also slash leaves.

04:17I haven't learned my slash technique.

04:50is that you have a little bit of hang time like Elmer Fudd
04:52when you go over a cliff.

04:58And yeah, the game gradually teaches you all things like this.
05:00And what I do like about it is that like,
05:02you can play it like a hardcore game,
05:04but you can play it like a normal platformer
05:05and just try and collect all the dust.
05:06Uh-huh.
05:07But yeah, that's the wall dash.
05:10I love that.
05:12Ceiling grab.
05:14It's almost like you're sort of magnetized to the dust a little bit.
05:18But yeah, it does require you to press and hold in that direction.
05:21And it does, it can be, it can use a little bit of a high precision,
05:25but you know, once you get used to it.
05:26And what I was saying before is that, you know,
05:29no offense to the Steam one, it just didn't have native controller support.
05:32Oh, there, now I can use my slashes.
05:35This is my light attack and heavy attack.
05:37And I can do that in all different angles.
05:40Swap.

05:44And uh...
05:45Uh.
05:46Like that.
05:47But you can also continue a chain in midair by chaining your attacks.
05:52As you can see by that move.

05:57So you can extend jumps.

06:04It's all kind of hard to vocalize, but it's something you can definitely get the feel for.

07:10And by holding both the light and the heavy attack button, boom.
07:12It's great ninja teleport.
07:14You unleash that combo.
07:17Is that something all the characters have in common?
07:19All the characters have that in common.
07:20But what's cool is like most of the time you'll start up the game and you'll definitely
07:24see you use that a lot at the end of the level where there's like a big room filled
07:27with enemies.
07:27But when you look at pros play, uh, it's pretty great to see how you can unleash that
07:31in the middle of a level and build it back up again.
07:33Oh, yeah.
07:34And uh, that's how people improve time for speedruns.
07:37So this is me just gonna try and get through it as quickly as possible.

07:42I definitely feel like this is a game where you could learn exponentially by watching
07:46a couple speedruns.
07:48Yeah, and I'm not, like, most people are like dash dash dash.
07:52And there are four different characters in the game.
07:54This is taking the silhouette of dustman.
07:58But everybody has, uh, unique abilities.
