00:00MUSIC
00:21Thank you. Well, good evening, everyone.
00:26Good evening and welcome to The Jonathan Ross Show.
00:28And we have got a great show lined up for you tonight.
00:32Let's have a look at who's in my green room.
00:34First up, the star and co-writer of one of the most popular
00:37and most-watched TV shows of all time, Gavin and Stacey.
00:45I won't lie, she's tidy and we loves her.
00:49It's Ruth Jones.
00:51CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:52A fabulous Ruth Jones.
00:56Along with Ruth, we have a brilliant writer, director and comedian.
01:01He starred in comedy shows like The IT Crowd
01:03and Channel 4's Big Fat Quiz of the Year,
01:05which he is amazing when he appears on that.
01:06He has a truly unique voice.
01:08It is the magnificent alpha male himself, Richard Ayoade.
01:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:21Everyone loves my next guest. Everyone loves her.
01:24Whether she's hosting This Morning, The Great British Bake Off
01:26or For the Love of Dogs, she always brings joy, enthusiasm
01:30and real gusto to everything she's in.
01:31She's pretty much the opposite, in fact, of Richard Ayoade.
01:34It is Alison Hammond.
01:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:58And with her, star of the comedy horror movie Abigail
02:03and the brilliant TV show Big Little Lies, it's Katherine Newton.
02:09CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:10And also on the show tonight, we have got some fantastic,
02:13exciting music for you from an excellent young band.
02:15They've supported the likes of The Sex Pistols and Blondie
02:18and if you like guitar music like I do, you're going to love them.
02:20It is The Molotovs!
02:22CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:26OK, so, before I get my guests out,
02:29did you see the big royal news this week?
02:32OK, don't panic, it's nothing bad, it's not that bad.
02:35LAUGHTER
02:37King Charles has been trying his head at DJing.
02:42That's right, ones on the ones and twos.
02:45LAUGHTER
02:46Here he is, have a look at this.
02:47He was at some event and they let him take charge of the day.
02:50LAUGHTER
02:56And then...
02:56And then...
02:57And if I push this one, the fader goes up, is that like...
03:00LAUGHTER
03:01There he is, King Charlie XCX.
03:04LAUGHTER
03:04Or Fat Boy King, whatever you want to call it.
03:07LAUGHTER
03:07And when he's not dropping his brother,
03:09he's dropping beats, as you can see there.
03:12LAUGHTER
03:13LAUGHTER
03:15So, you might think he's out of touch, but listen,
03:18he gets to take charge of it.
03:19Listen to the banger that King Charlie drops, here.
03:22Who you think they're afraid?
03:26I like being full!
03:29LAUGHTER
03:30LAUGHTER
03:30LAUGHTER
03:32LAUGHTER
03:33OK, so, full disclosure, we may have doctored that clip a little bit.
03:39LAUGHTER
03:39Shall we get on with the show?
03:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
03:53LAUGHTER
03:59APPLAUSE
03:59Thank you so much for coming in.
04:00So lovely to you.
04:02APPLAUSE
04:02Thank you, thank you.
04:09Come and sit down.
04:10It's so lovely to have you here.
04:11I am a great admirer of both of you.
04:13I hope you know that.
04:15Aw.
04:15And...
04:16Were you upset about that handshake?
04:17Because I felt a little bit of social blow back there.
04:19Well, I went to...
04:20I went to sort of embrace you,
04:22because men do embrace and hug each other one another these days,
04:25but I felt from you there was a kind of,
04:26this is not...
04:27not how I want things to go.
04:28That hugging is out of control.
04:29LAUGHTER
04:30You wouldn't survive in Wales,
04:31cos they'd want to kutch you all the time.
04:33They'd want to cut me?
04:34No, that...
04:35It's normal.
04:36LAUGHTER
04:36No, it's kutch, you said.
04:38No, kutch.
04:38Kutch, which means...
04:39It's like a cuddle.
04:40That felt like a very low hug.
04:42LAUGHTER
04:43That felt like a pick-up and burn.
04:45I mean, see, now he's interested.
04:49For sure you know this,
04:50Ruth won the BAFTA
04:51for best female comedy performance
04:53in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.
04:55CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
04:58If only more people have watched it.
05:01LAUGHTER
05:01How was that moment for you, collecting that?
05:04Oh, gosh.
05:05Well, I didn't hear my name properly.
05:07I...
05:07The only reason I knew I'd win is because
05:10Rob Brydon and Joe Page
05:12were quite hysterical,
05:14and they were going,
05:15Yes! Yes!
05:16And it was a bit like the barn dance episode
05:18in Gavin and Stacey,
05:20when Rob Brydon was going,
05:21Surprise!
05:22Surprise!
05:23Quite manically.
05:24So, yeah, I didn't know,
05:26I didn't quite realise,
05:26and then I went up,
05:27but because I genuinely didn't think
05:29I was going to win,
05:30and I'm not just doing that kind of,
05:31like, humble brag thing,
05:33I genuinely didn't think I would,
05:34and I'd taken my shoes off,
05:36and I was sort of settled in for the night,
05:39and then when they called my name,
05:42I had to go up barefoot.
05:43Wow.
05:44Which was,
05:44which I kind of quite liked that,
05:46you know, in a long dress and no shoes.
05:48Very freeing.
05:48Very freeing.
05:49I want to talk to you about Gavin and Stacey,
05:51but I can't help but think,
05:52there probably isn't much more to say about it.
05:55There can't be many questions you haven't been asked,
05:57or am I right?
05:57Are there any that you can think of
05:59that you think,
05:59why has no one asked me this?
06:00People daily, daily compliment the show,
06:04which is so nice,
06:06and I don't take it for granted at all,
06:08but it does amaze me that it's still got this life to it.
06:13Well, when I saw you,
06:14it's so weird, I don't know,
06:15you must get this quite a lot of thought,
06:16but when I saw you backstage,
06:17my first thought was to say to you,
06:20what's occurring?
06:21Do you get that a lot?
06:23Yes.
06:23The weirdest place I had it was at a funeral.
06:27Um...
06:28Yeah, it was my...
06:28But you kind of knew what was occurring, didn't you?
06:30Well, exactly.
06:31And it was in,
06:32we were in the line-up,
06:33you know, after the service,
06:35it was my mother-in-law's funeral, actually,
06:36and I was very sad,
06:37I was very fond of my mother-in-law,
06:39and then this gentleman came up and he went,
06:42what's occurring?
06:43Oh, no!
06:43I went,
06:45well,
06:46I'm just mourning my dear mother-in-law,
06:48that's what's occurring.
06:50Um, yeah, so,
06:51but it's funny.
06:52I think people think it's the first time they've said it to you.
06:55Yeah.
06:55And so...
06:56And it's not even that,
06:57it's just because you're so familiar from the show,
06:59I mean, see,
07:00that's just the first thing that pops into people's head,
07:01I think, sometimes.
07:02Yeah, do you think I look like Nessa, then?
07:04Well, not exactly the same,
07:07but you can see that Nessa's in there somewhere.
07:09She does come in quite handy sometimes,
07:12you know, like I can sort of channel her,
07:14if I'm in a difficult situation,
07:15or if somebody's being a bit annoying,
07:17I can kind of go,
07:18oh, love, back off!
07:21That kind of thing is quite useful, yeah.
07:23Richard, is there anything that,
07:24when your fans approach you in the street,
07:26I'm sure respectfully,
07:26is there anything that they say on a regular basis,
07:28is there the equivalent of a sort of catchphrase you have?
07:31I mean, they just tend to be disappointed.
07:36LAUGHTER
07:39Do they try and hug you?
07:41Oh, no, no.
07:42I mean, very often they're trying to avoid me,
07:45because they know this interaction
07:47is not going to lead to the prospering of anyone.
07:51So, no, there's no specific thing,
07:53other than, you know,
07:55a general sense of what's wrong with you.
07:58LAUGHTER
07:59Are you, are you genuinely socially awkward?
08:03Is that even a question?
08:06LAUGHTER
08:06I mean, it's got a question.
08:08Look at my body language,
08:09I'm holding onto the sofa,
08:10my fists are in balls.
08:12I mean, what even is this posture?
08:13I've got a book in my pocket,
08:15I'm entirely dressed in cord,
08:17and you're asking me if I'm socially awkward?
08:21Well, but you know, is it...
08:23No, I'm Jack Nicholson.
08:24LAUGHTER
08:25I wanted to compliment you on the green,
08:28I mean, you seem to be negative about the green cord,
08:30and I think it's rather beautiful.
08:31Thank you very much.
08:32And thank you for pulling back before you make contact.
08:34It's lovely.
08:35LAUGHTER
08:38You are both brilliant writers,
08:40but I want to ask Richard about his book.
08:41Richard has a book out at the moment,
08:43a very funny book, which I have read,
08:45and I have laughed out loud many times while reading.
08:48It's called Afterthoughts, or Some Pistachios Won't Open.
08:52How would you describe this, this book?
08:54Well, I'd say it's a book in the tradition
08:56of the 17th century French moralists.
08:58LAUGHTER
08:59I don't think there's been a ban since Pascal's Pensee,
09:02so I thought I'd step up to the plate and take a swing.
09:06LAUGHTER
09:06You know, they're thought pellets.
09:08Yes.
09:08Dense, very robust, nutritious thoughts
09:12that can improve your life.
09:15I can tell you some of them.
09:16Well, tell me some.
09:16So the standard phrase to me is aphorisms.
09:19That conversation didn't get the way I wanted it.
09:21LAUGHTER
09:22I mean, I literally went like that, and he just went on.
09:24I know.
09:25You feel awkward.
09:26I feel awkward for you.
09:27I'm still holding the book, like I've gone on a whole set.
09:30You'd like to get your book out, Richard.
09:32Thanks for you.
09:32There you go.
09:33They're kind of little things.
09:35So you will all know, we all know things like,
09:37all which glitters is not gold.
09:39Well, for example, that glitters is not gold.
09:41E.G. glitter.
09:44LAUGHTER
09:47Better late than never does not apply with regards to infections.
09:52LAUGHTER
09:53Cold hands can also mean a stopped heart.
09:57LAUGHTER
10:01LAUGHTER
10:01Oh, you jeans!
10:02APPLAUSE
10:05So, um...
10:06And you're touring.
10:07You're going to tour this book, so to speak.
10:08I'm touring this book.
10:09I mean, another way of saying it is I'm selling it door to door.
10:13LAUGHTER
10:14But in June, I am going on a tour.
10:17Do you like touring?
10:18I've never toured before.
10:19Let's find out.
10:20OK.
10:21Now, can I just warn you?
10:22You will...
10:23Because I've done a bit of book touring.
10:25And you will have to meet people.
10:27And they may try and hug you.
10:30Or touch you.
10:31And I'm just preparing you for that.
10:35Without consent, it's an assault.
10:37LAUGHTER
10:38Can I say...
10:39Can I do you mind taking a bit of advice here?
10:42Go on.
10:42You're wearing corduroy.
10:43Yeah.
10:44Secondary to velvet...
10:44Why are you whispering? They're recording this.
10:46Because this is...
10:47To give you some gravitas.
10:49OK.
10:49Corduroy is secondary to velvet in terms of being the most tactile and attractive fabric.
10:54So...
10:55When a man or woman sees a corduroy-wearing person, the initial desire is to touch.
11:02LAUGHTER
11:03This sounds like something you've said before in court.
11:07LAUGHTER
11:08APPLAUSE
11:10Well, it didn't work then, it didn't work now.
11:12I'm terrified to touch him now.
11:15I mean, I would like to, but I feel...
11:16I just don't...
11:17I don't think you do.
11:18I don't think you do want to touch me.
11:19No, well, now you've sort of...
11:20I want to rebel against your rejection.
11:22Yes.
11:24Forbidden fruit is the sweetest.
11:26But in this current climate, I don't do it.
11:29Oh, we don't.
11:30I don't do it.
11:31The current climate being a climate of standard civility.
11:34LAUGHTER
11:35Respect for another's boundaries.
11:37That's right.
11:37I did a casting a couple of days ago for something that I'm writing,
11:43and I had to read in for a part with a male actor,
11:48and I had to say,
11:49is it all right if I put my hand on your shoulder?
11:52And it was, you know, it was...
11:54But you do.
11:54You do have to be really careful.
11:56Well, they have the intimacy coaches now.
11:57Yes.
11:58Oh, my gosh, I had one of them.
12:00I had one of those on a show that I won't name,
12:03because I don't want to embarrass them, but...
12:04Match of the day.
12:06LAUGHTER
12:08And they...
12:09All I had to do, all I had to do was sit fully clothed,
12:13the other person was fully clothed,
12:14and we were just sat there,
12:16and we just had to have a little peck,
12:18just a little peck on the cheek,
12:20and we had to have an intimacy coach for it.
12:22I had an intimacy coordinator for an audio book that I just did.
12:27LAUGHTER
12:28That's not even a joke.
12:29Oh, my gosh.
12:30Did you really?
12:30Yeah.
12:31Why?
12:32It was called Paddington Go To Peru.
12:34No, it wasn't.
12:35LAUGHTER
12:37I didn't ask for it.
12:38They were just there.
12:39I think they were obviously left over from the recording of 50 Shades of Grey.
12:42LAUGHTER
12:43Here's the exciting thing as well.
12:45Ruth has a new show on television,
12:47which you may have seen some of already,
12:48although they haven't dropped all of the episodes so far.
12:50I'm up to date.
12:51There's five drops so far.
12:52It's called The Other Bennet Sister.
12:54It's fabulous.
12:56It's on BBC One on Sunday at 8pm.
12:58How would you describe it?
12:59Because it's a familiar story but told in a different way.
13:02Yeah, so it's Pride and Prejudice but told from a different angle.
13:06So in Pride and Prejudice there are five daughters.
13:10Lizzie is the famous one who marries Mr Darcy.
13:13And the middle daughter is Mary,
13:16who's always considered to be quite boring and bookish,
13:19didn't want to fit in with society and get married and all that.
13:23And so I play Mrs Bennet and I...
13:26My Mrs Bennet is perhaps a little harsher than Mrs Bennet's you've seen before.
13:31And I treat her like a sort of 18th century estate agent
13:35who has five properties to sell,
13:38one of which will not shift no matter how much you reduce the price.
13:42One of which is a do-a-upper.
13:44Yes, exactly.
13:46It's fab... I'm so enjoying it.
13:48Oh, thank you.
13:49And such a great cast around you.
13:50We're going to see some now.
13:51Have a look at this.
13:52As I said, it's on BBC One on Sundays.
13:53Of course you can watch it on iPlayer.
13:56I see that you have stood up twice with the sparrow boy.
14:00Yes, Mama.
14:03And you will not dance with him again.
14:08But, Mother, he's been most attentive.
14:12He's quite the gentleman.
14:14Mary, his father owns a shop.
14:18Yes?
14:19With a bell?
14:23Mother, I have danced with him twice.
14:26I have no wish to marry him.
14:28You may not object to lowering yourself,
14:31but I will not have you ruin your sister's chances of a match.
14:45Yeah, you must watch it. It's an absolute delight.
14:47Richard E. Grant is in it with you.
14:49I love Richard E. Grant.
14:50And you play husband and wife in this.
14:52Yes.
14:52How's it working with him?
14:53Oh, joyous.
14:54And the characters are there once again,
14:56portrayed slightly differently from the book.
14:57But what I loved about the relationship
14:59with our Mr. and Mrs. Bennet is that they,
15:03I think, probably loved each other a lot at one point.
15:05Or certainly were very passionate about each other
15:08and that passion has now died.
15:09And so they really irritate each other,
15:12you know, to the point of absolute pure hatred.
15:15Wow.
15:17I mean, I hadn't got all that from it.
15:19I just thought maybe they got a bit bored with each other.
15:23But pure hatred.
15:24Richard, you've worked with Richard E. Grant as well, haven't you?
15:27He was on an episode of a show that I did called Gadget Man.
15:31Good show.
15:32Thank you very much.
15:32Did you enjoy working with Richard?
15:34It also ended in pure hatred.
15:37I remember him being quite touchy-feely.
15:39I remember he gave me a big hug when he met me.
15:41Oh, well, is that why you...
15:42Did he now?
15:42Oh, you wouldn't have liked that.
15:44Well, I don't think...
15:45I think he can also read people.
15:47So he didn't...
15:47Ah.
15:48He didn't even try.
15:49Yeah.
15:50I don't think he came close to an eight foot.
15:53By the end of the evening, I promise you this.
15:57I will hug Richard.
16:04And on that bombshell we'll take a break, but don't go anywhere because up next we'll be joined by the
16:08fantastic Alison Hammond.
16:09See you in a couple of minutes.
16:15APPLAUSE
16:22Welcome back to the show.
16:23Let's get my next guest out.
16:25Now, whatever she does and wherever she goes, she just makes it a lot more fun.
16:29Are you ready for more fun, Richard?
16:32Yes.
16:34It's Alison Hammond.
16:35APPLAUSE
16:52Tell her join us, Alison.
16:54Hello, Jonathan.
16:55Well, thank you for coming on. I'm so excited you're here.
16:57This is my very first time on your show.
17:00Do you know what?
17:00This is like a dream come true.
17:02Oh.
17:02It's like I've won a competition.
17:03Wow.
17:06So I've been reading up on Alison and I feel like I'm sure many of you do that
17:09I kind of know Alison because she burst into our lives on Big Brother. Yes, I remember that
17:15Yeah, and you were amazing on Big Brother and then
17:19Successfully transferred into TV presenting and I've done brilliantly ever since but you kind of because you do so many
17:24shows
17:24Where you know your personality is right front and center
17:26I think we do feel we know you you know you like a friend which is a good thing
17:30But so I went up on you to find out more about you
17:32Yeah, of course, and I was surprised to find out and you might know that Alice was named after a
17:39famous boxer
17:44No, what because no I should point out his name isn't Allison
17:49But part of his name is yeah, and people call me that all the time so that friends and family
17:53would call me Ali
17:55Muhammad Ali. Yeah, and why why were you named after Muhammad Ali? So
17:58My dad actually named me. I've got another sister in Jamaica called Alicia
18:03And then I've got another brother called Ali so the three of us
18:08After at Muhammad Ali because my dad was his bodyguard and he absolutely loved him
18:13So whenever Muhammad Ali would come to Birmingham my dad would be called out to go and look after Muhammad
18:19Ali
18:20I mean so it's mad because there's a moment where he actually came to the Odeon cinema to do
18:26I don't know what he was doing probably just to see a film
18:28He was doing like an exhibition because obviously he's a big-time boxer and I went along and my mom
18:36I went and sat on his lap and I was like, okay, get off me. I didn't know you while
18:40six years old
18:41I'll get off me. We have you happen. We've got those ones. This is baby Alison. We've grown up Ali.
18:47Look at this
18:48I'm like
18:49I'm like
18:50I'm like please stop kissing me. Why is he trying to kiss me? You don't like that, do you?
18:55Fair enough. Way in your personal space there
18:57Can I ask if your dad was his bodyguard
19:00Yeah
19:01In a fight
19:02Between your dad and Muhammad Ali
19:04Who would have won? I think they had a couple of like little sessions and I think my dad got
19:09knocked out
19:10Okay
19:11But he was ready to throw himself in the way
19:13Yeah, he would have taken a bullet for Muhammad Ali
19:16Without a doubt. He absolutely, well, he named all his kids after
19:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
19:22He loved him. We have a picture of your dad as well. Here's a picture of your father. I hope
19:26you don't mind
19:26Oh, I love that picture
19:28And he looks a bit like Ali as well
19:30Do you know what? A lot of people said they looked like brothers and I can remember back in the
19:34time
19:34At the end of the day, I think my dad was obsessed with Muhammad Ali
19:37He just like had his boxing gloves
19:41Muhammad Ali was really into magic
19:43So he would give me like magic tricks and stuff like that
19:46He loved magic Muhammad Ali
19:48I don't know if people know this but yeah, he was really into magic
19:50And he used to give me little tricks and give me this little traffic light
19:54And you put your hand over the top and it would be all green
19:56And then you put your hand over the top like I can't be all red and then you could make
20:00it green red like traffic light
20:02It's amazing. I lost it rich
20:04Yeah, have you still got the stuff that Muhammad Ali gave you?
20:07I lost it. I think it's in my loft somewhere, but I need to find it
20:09You do need to find that
20:10I need to really find it
20:12Alison has of course been co-hosting Bake Off since 2023
20:15You started there alongside Noel Fielding
20:17That's when the judges were Paul Hollywood and Prue Leaf
20:19Prue Leaf is no longer with the show, I believe
20:22Were you sad to see her go?
20:23Do you know what? The way I see it is it's kind of bittersweet
20:28We love Prue and she's incredible
20:31She's given nine years of her time
20:32But we also wanted to go and enjoy her life as well
20:35You know, she's I think she's 86 now
20:37And she's amazing
20:39Yeah, she's got a wonderful husband
20:40And they want to do more things, do you know what I mean?
20:43And when you're doing Bake Off your summer's gone, literally
20:46Yeah
20:46And she just wants to enjoy, so yes, that's very bitter that she's going
20:50But we're very excited and it's quite sweet that we've got Nigella Lawson
20:54Yes
20:54How exciting is that?
20:56That's going to be amazing
20:56Can't wait
20:58Yeah, I'm actually meeting her next week
21:00So you haven't met yet?
21:01Haven't met yet
21:01She's going to come to the studios
21:03I'm going to have coffee and have a little chat
21:05But she's really excited
21:06She is
21:07Well she's going to be great on the show
21:08Of course she pronounces things in a slightly weird way
21:12Not that you use
21:13You don't use the microwave a lot on Bake Off
21:15Microwave
21:16Microwave
21:18Ruth you must be tired of this but please share with us the Welsh for microwave
21:23Poppity ping
21:25Poppity ping
21:26Poppity ping
21:26I love it
21:28I love it
21:28So that will be exciting, so you'll be working with her
21:30And now we're still on board with you
21:31Yeah, Noel's going to be there, Paul's there
21:33Paul's turning 60 this year
21:35Is he turning 60?
21:36I can't believe it
21:36Yeah
21:37Do you ever bake for him?
21:38Do you ever cook for him?
21:39Because you're a good cook, aren't you?
21:40I do actually, you know
21:41So then we have a bit of time
21:43Because obviously sometimes it takes two hours
21:44Go out the back, knock up some brownies
21:47With some dime bars in, give it out to the crew
21:49But Paul will never say it's any good
21:53Then I clock him eating my brownies
21:56And when he's on his own, he's like, they're alright
21:58Alison, rumours been going round
22:00What's the rumours?
22:01Oh, there's always a rumour in there
22:02There's always a rumour
22:03Come on, tell me
22:03But this is an okay one
22:04The rumour is that you've signed up to do the next series of Celebrity Traitors
22:08Oh, for goodness sake
22:10And you would be amazing in that
22:12Can you confirm or deny or do you want to evade this question?
22:15I can't do it because I'm doing bake-off
22:18So it's the same
22:19I think it's the same time when I'm doing bake-off
22:21So that's a definite no
22:23Ah, but you did do Strictly
22:24And you did very well on Strictly
22:26I did do Strictly, I love Strictly
22:27And they've asked me in the past to do Strictly
22:28And I can't do it because I'm lazy basically
22:30And I don't want to work that hard
22:31It's hard work
22:32You enjoyed it as well
22:33Oh my goodness
22:34I absolutely loved it
22:36Ali Ash, Scotty Arnest
22:38One of the best dancers ever
22:39Nice man as well
22:40So lovely
22:41Really, really lovely
22:42Married to Jeanette
22:43Do you watch Strictly?
22:44No
22:44Oh, it's wonderful
22:46So basically you have to
22:48You have one week to do a dance
22:50And then you have to perform it live on a Saturday night
22:52And it is tough
22:54It is so scary
22:55But so much fun
22:56And you had to lift him at one stage as well, didn't you?
22:59Oh, it was awful
23:00So obviously at the time he couldn't lift me
23:04So we just thought, well, don't worry
23:05I'll lift you
23:07I can do it
23:08So there's a moment where he does a cartwheel
23:11And I have to kind of pick him up
23:14And
23:15And then like help him over
23:17So I thought, I can do this
23:18No problem
23:18Solid
23:19I can do this
23:20So he goes into his cartwheel
23:23And I pick him up
23:25And
23:25And break wind
23:29And then I'll put him back down again
23:31And I look at him and I go
23:32Let's never talk about this ever again
23:36But I didn't realise he's quite a heavy guy
23:40It literally took the wind out of me
23:48So Alison, you have a new show
23:49It sounds amazing
23:50It sounds really lovely
23:51Like one of those really kind of life-affirming shows
23:53It's called Your Song
23:54It's out in April on Channel 4
23:56Tell us a bit about it
23:57So your song is exactly that
23:59It's your song that you feel emotionally attached to
24:02So it could be
24:03I don't know
24:03It got you through a rough time going through school
24:06Or you know
24:07It reminds you of someone who's passed on
24:08Or it's just a song that makes you feel happy
24:10A song that really means something to you
24:12Something that really, really
24:13A song that really means to you
24:14And people come from around the country
24:17And they perform it on a stage
24:18It's our like roving stage
24:20That goes to Liverpool, Edinburgh, Birmingham, London
24:23And people just go on stage
24:25Who have never sung before
24:26And they sing the song to a random audience
24:29So they tell us a story
24:31And behind it
24:32And then they sing it
24:33And it's just a really beautiful feel-good show
24:36And I absolutely love it
24:37Aww
24:38Well, you're the perfect host for that company
24:39Let's have a look
24:39This is a little look at your song
24:41I'm excited
24:42I'm going to f*** myself
24:44I'm sorry
24:46When I was a little girl
24:49Watching were the people closest to them
24:53A huge supportive audience
24:55It might be
24:57Post-Revolution
24:58Singing
24:59It was an act of rebellion
25:01This song saved my life
25:04Somehow
25:05Ah, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
25:07I love the song
25:08Humankind
25:10Paloma and Sam decided
25:12Who should get the chance to perform
25:13It's pure
25:15Yeah
25:15Feeling
25:18In this once-in-a-lifetime concert
25:20You can imagine it bouncing around the walls
25:22At the Hankney Empire
25:23It was great
25:24It was great, didn't it?
25:26What a sweet idea for a show
25:27I'm actually quite surprised at how many times I actually cried
25:30You know, I'm not really a crier, to be honest with you
25:33Right
25:33And you get out there, you warm up the crowd with the song yourself, don't you?
25:37I warm them up
25:37Yeah, I warm them up
25:38What's your song of choice?
25:39I always go for Mustang Sally
25:40And I get everyone singing
25:41We get the audience going
25:43So I don't have to sing
25:43That's a good rousing one
25:44All you want to do is ride around Sally
25:47Sing it
25:48Ride Sally Ride
25:50Do you see what I mean?
25:51Well, you know what
25:52It works
25:53Why don't we do it properly
25:54If you reach behind all three of you
25:55You'll find I put a microphone
25:56Oh, you're joking
25:58And you know, let's get in the mood
26:00Oh, yes
26:01Let's get in the mood
26:03Let's get in the mood
26:05Let's get in the mood
26:08Let's get in the mood
26:08Yes
26:09Yes
26:09Yes
26:10Yes
26:11Yes
26:11Yes
26:12There we go
26:13Do we need to stand up?
26:15I think we might as well
26:16Come on, let's stand there
26:17Let's work the crowd
26:18I'm standing
26:19Are you ready to see so
26:20Shall I start it off?
26:21You start it off
26:22Are you ready?
26:22This is Alison performing
26:24Alright everyone
26:25Let's do this
26:26Come on
26:28You ready?
26:28I'll take a tree
26:29A Mustang salad
26:31A Mustang salad
26:33Oh, you're perfect
26:34Good start
26:36I guess you're ready to store
26:38Your Mustang down
26:49I wasn't going that fast. Why do I have to slow down?
26:53I guess you can stole the Mustang down
26:56I was going 18, it's a 20 zone
26:59Oh, it's up
27:03Well, you've been running all over the town
27:09I guess you've got a future flat feet on the ground
27:13Yes, right
27:17All you want to do is ride around Sally
27:21Sing it
27:21Ride Sally ride
27:24It's a very long song, isn't it?
27:26All you want to do is ride around Sally
27:29Sing it
27:30Ride Sally ride
27:32Sing it
27:33I don't touch you
27:33What an easy early morning
27:38I'm going to be
27:40Wapping those whippin' eyes
27:44Oh, yeah
27:46Thank you
27:51Take a break, but don't go away
27:52Because up next, we'll be joined by Katherine Newton and Sarah Michelle Gellar
27:56See you in a couple of minutes
28:08Welcome back to the show
28:09Let's get my next guest out
28:11Two fantastic actors currently starring in the brilliant horror movie
28:14Ready or not 2
28:16Here I come
28:16I've seen it already
28:17It's amazing
28:18Please welcome Katherine Newton and Sarah Michelle Gellar
28:25Thank you
28:26Hi, that was an impressive job
28:33Hi, thank you
28:35You are good to see you
28:37Oh, really?
28:39Oh, cool
28:39It's so nice to meet you
28:40Hi, absolutely
28:41Hi
28:42Great job singing
28:43Thank you
28:44Thank you
28:45Yeah, it was phenomenal
28:45Well, no, I think I wore that hat at the Taylor Swift concert
28:49Ah, there you go, of course, Queen Tay Tay
28:51Yes
28:52So you're both starring in, uh, Ready or Not 2
28:54Yeah
28:55Here I come, uh, which I've seen already and I loved it
28:58It was great
28:58Could you please set up the premise?
29:00Tell everyone who hasn't seen it yet
29:01Go for it
29:02What it's about
29:03Wow, she's giving it away to me
29:04Okay, let's go
29:05Ready or not 2
29:07Double or nothing
29:08Ready or not 2, here I come
29:09Starring Samara Weaving, uh, it's about
29:12Grace and Faith, two sisters finding their way back
29:14You know, trying to survive the night
29:16That's not what the movie's about
29:18That's not what the movie's about
29:19Sarah Michelle Gellar are trying to kill them
29:20Have you seen the movie?
29:21I'm pretty sure that's what it's about
29:22It's a continuation of a movie
29:24Right
29:24Where a bride on her wedding night
29:26Gets told she has to play a game with her new in-laws
29:28Because we all know in-laws are scary
29:30And she pulls a card and she gets hide and seek
29:32Which she thinks is funny
29:33Until she realizes that they're going to try to seek her and kill her
29:38That was so much better
29:39And if they win
29:40If they kill her
29:41They work for Satan, basically
29:44Yeah
29:44Um, and so they all try to kill her
29:46But in the end, you know what happens in the first one?
29:48She kills them all
29:49Yeah
29:49It's a family film
29:51It's a, yeah, it's a loving movie
29:53So in this one it picks up right where the last one left off
29:55Like the second after
29:56That literally the second
29:58Yeah
29:58And she finds out that there's all these other families out there
30:01That want to kill her
30:02It's a, it's really, it's so much fun
30:05I so much enjoyed it
30:07Uh, we're going to show a clip now
30:08And then we'll talk some more about it after this
30:10By surviving hide and seek you've triggered a new game
30:14This time against the high council families
30:16Double or nothing
30:17And this part will be familiar
30:21They will try to kill you
30:23Welcome to our home
30:26I'm not playing
30:28Okay
30:30Brunella, kill the sister
30:34No, no, no, no, god damn it
30:41Whoever wins runs everything
30:43Everything?
30:44The world
30:45I can't believe you're driving me out of the shit
30:51It's exciting
30:53What exciting for me
30:56It's terrifying for you
30:58It's all over
31:12It's a lot of fun
31:13It's so much fun
31:14I loved it
31:15There is a lot of very playful gore in this film
31:18It's not one of those films where you are going to
31:20Because it's it's kind of camp
31:22It's silly in that way
31:23And you both get covered in quite a lot of blood
31:26You can say that
31:27Fair
31:28How did they achieve the uh
31:29I don't want to give too much away
31:30But there's a way in which people sometimes
31:33Are ended
31:34Are you talking about
31:36The pathing?
31:37Yes
31:38What do you call it?
31:39The pathing
31:40The pathing
31:54Yeah
31:54Does it stain out of interest?
31:56And is it a nightmare?
31:58It is
31:58Especially if you have blonde hair
32:00My very first day we were filming
32:01We were filming in a hotel
32:03And so like instead of a dressing room
32:04They give you this hotel room
32:05And you know you go to a new hotel room
32:06Like you look around
32:07You're like is there stains?
32:08So I see these like blood drops
32:10Now normally in a hotel I'm like I'm out
32:12And I was like there's like a couple more blood drops
32:14And then I was like you know let me lean outside
32:16I was like hey did Samara have this room yesterday?
32:19They're like yeah why did she leave something?
32:21I was like a few things
32:22It was everywhere
32:25There's one scene where you're standing near someone who pats
32:27Papped
32:28And you get literally covered
32:30How did they see that is someone like with a bucket there or?
32:32Close it's kind of like that
32:33We have um we have blood cannons
32:36And they're they're like like what you imagine like a bazooka is
32:41Coming out of the ground pointed directly at your face
32:44And you have to be really specific about it
32:46Because if they miss your face you lost the shot
32:49You're not getting it back
32:51That's a two-hour reset
32:53Do they call this a blood cannon on the set?
32:55Yes
32:55They call it a blood cannon
32:56So someone will say can you now bring in the blood cannon?
32:58Yeah we're going to do the path
32:59Bring in the blood cannons
33:01Blood cannon is set
33:02Catherine is set
33:04Camera's set
33:05Three
33:05And you can't pre-ex it
33:07You can't go like this before the shot
33:09You've got to take it
33:10Yeah it's no it's really fun
33:12It's really fun
33:14So I have to talk Buffy a little bit
33:15Because Buffy is a show which means so much
33:17To so many people
33:19Uh you know
33:21The fans of Buffy you know better than I do
33:23Uh adore it
33:25And yet when you when you first played Buffy I guess you had no idea
33:28Of obviously knowing how important it would be to people
33:30But also even if it was going to be a hit
33:32Well no I mean it was a movie on a network in the states that nobody had heard of
33:37Based on an unsuccessful movie
33:39I wanted to see that film
33:39Did you yeah so you were you were the one
33:41Um and so the odds were I actually love that film
33:43But the odds were pretty stacked against us
33:45So no one thought we'd make it past the first few episodes
33:48And so when you signed on was it that were people kind of just generally positive
33:51Or did anyone say to you i'm not sure this is going to last or
33:54I got a lot of like it's so great you got a pilot
33:56Maybe next year you'll get a show that'll go to series
33:58It was more so I got those looks
34:01They expected it to be a failure yeah oh for sure
34:03Yeah that's amazing because it's so important
34:05I know richard you're a fan aren't you
34:07Certainly yes very much
34:09But you genuinely are aren't you
34:10Yes it's just I have a very insincere sounding voice
34:15There was talk recently about a reboot and everyone got very excited
34:18And that is not happening now certainly not at the moment
34:22But I'm sure you will have seen the fans reaction to that over the weekend
34:26How did that make you feel
34:27It's so overwhelming you know I
34:29Like you're dealing with your own stuff
34:31And you know the whole reason that we wanted to bring the show back
34:35Was for the fans I think buffy really gave people
34:39At a time where you feel like you don't fit in
34:42And people don't understand you it gave you
34:44We call it like found family chosen family and
34:48The outpouring has just I see it I feel it like it's just it's been really overwhelming
34:53Yeah well positive positive in a good way
34:56Fingers crossed it still happens so let's uh let's keep hoping
34:58Uh you've done so much in your career but there's one moment I was reading up on you and one
35:02moment stuck out
35:02Because it was sort of a different time but you won an award for a kiss
35:07I've actually won two for that two kiss awards
35:09Yes
35:09Oh my goodness
35:10I won I won best kiss and then I won later on they did the goat kiss
35:14I won greatest of all time
35:16Yeah
35:17That's amazing for cruel intentions
35:18Yes
35:19Was that right oh my gosh
35:20That was an amazing scene I don't know if you know but it was an amazing scene
35:24So I think we have a photograph here and the goat was for that kiss as well
35:27Yes it was
35:27Yes can you remember that moment when you shot it yeah that wasn't actually the kiss that was just for
35:32fun
35:32Yeah
35:33That was just that was later
35:36Yes I can because it was this you know new york very much like london right
35:40The weather is bad for a very long time and then it was the first beautiful day of the year
35:46So you know what everybody does on the first beautiful day of the year
35:49They go to central park go outside and that's where we were filming so we had about
35:53Three four hundred people just sitting there watching
35:57Uh while we did it take after take you know filmmaking you have to go
36:01Although for some reason roger come with the director did a lot of takes and uh yeah
36:04So we got it and you know um
36:07We thought it came out great until selma's mother just screamed at her
36:10I was like why'd you have to use so much tongue why was there so much spit
36:13There's like that famous spit take but we did it and you know what now she's now we're award winners
36:18yeah
36:19You know woofie it's amazing because i know you've talked about this but in gavin and stacey uh
36:23Nessa and smithy never kissed no they didn't even though they got married and they had a child together they
36:28never actually
36:30They never kissed so partly because james corden and i couldn't bear the thought of kissing each other
36:38So yeah so that was kind of written into the script behind closed doors yeah well no we never did
36:42no we never did
36:43Well in our minds no no they still behind closed doors they never kissed
36:46But that's presumably because you are such close friends rather than you found the idea off-putting
36:53Yeah and because we're like brother and sister so it would have been strange yeah yeah
36:57Kathleen am i right in thinking you had to do a because when people are going to be kind of
37:01playing a couple on uh
37:02In a film sometimes they do a chemistry test i believe before and to make sure that you do you
37:06can get along or the spark can be
37:09Effectively conveyed and you had to do one involving your kiss i believe is that right
37:12i did and i um he was so cute too and i was nervous about the kiss obviously so we
37:19were outside and i was like hey
37:21should we like talk about it and he was like i got this and i was even more nervous
37:27and then we go in and it's in front of like a table of people like how there's this many
37:32people it's like
37:32maybe like three more people sitting at this long white table and there's this big curtain behind
37:38us like we're on a stage and he leans in and he gets nervous and he pulls the whole curtain
37:44down
37:44No no no no and then you know maybe we should have talked about it yeah
37:50Did you get the job i did get the job yeah did he get the job no
37:56Richard have you audition for things do you have to audition or do people know what they're going to get
37:59with you
37:59i think if people have seen me they know not to hire me yeah
38:03they very much know if anything like i'm asked not to attend this sounds this sounds sort of hard
38:09to believe but didn't you audition for one of guy which's films once
38:13i am auditioned for the jason statham role
38:18i got very close down to the last two but they thought i sounded too tough
38:22that's my problem you two jesus get out of here
38:26that's too strong um okay so i'm going to change the subject somewhat and this sounds uh amazing
38:32but katherine is an incredibly accomplished golfer oh my gosh this is uh this is a fact really yes

39:03woods yes and i got a selfie with him hold it when you say i've hit into i had to
39:08play through him
39:08is that a golfing term yeah when you hit into them it's because you didn't know what you were doing
39:12right and i hit my drive too far in saint andrews it goes really far at the old course sometimes
39:17and my ball rolled on to the green and you know i just picked it up and kept going and
39:22he didn't
39:22mind no of course not i've done crazy golf sometimes and i'm especially good at getting it through the
39:28windmill that's called mini golf i think in america but over here where we invented golf the collector
39:37just uh just so you know okay we're gonna take a break but afterwards we may well get to see
