00:35This colourful ink looks unremarkable, but in fact it's home to a most extraordinary lifeform, capable of truly astonishing feats.
00:44While perfectly at home swimming in ink, these creatures can also survive on land.
00:50It might sound impossible, but when you see it for yourself, everything will become clear.
00:55Clearly, this isn't any ordinary squid. Our research has determined that these creatures can change into humanoid form.
01:07As squid, they can dive into it. While in human form, they can use weapons. They really are the most
01:16fascinating creatures.
01:20In most circles, these creatures are known as inklings, but our researchers just call them squid.
01:27Of course, there are males and females. Inkling boys and inkling girls, if you will.
01:35Our founder, Phil Aounder, witnessed them changing their skin tone and eye colour at will, like this.
01:42However, our intern, Shelley, says that the part that looks like hair changes colour each time they go into battle.
01:49The ability to change between humanoid and squid form starts when they reach a mature stage, usually around the age
01:56of 14.
02:00They can't run that fast on two legs, but just watch them go when they swim through ink in squid
02:07form.
02:10This footage, part of a peer-reviewed study, proves that they're around twice as fast while swimming.
02:17Jumping height is the same for both humanoid and squid forms.
02:22But by building momentum before leaping, there's a big difference in distance. Well, as you can see.
02:30Another discovery we made is that squid can climb up walls that are covered in ink.
02:40There are some obstacles they can't climb past, however.
02:48As you'd expect, they can only shoot ink when in human form.
02:51Aiming is perfectly simple, but highly evolved.
02:54By moving the Wii U gamepad, the on-screen reticule moves in the same direction instantly, so you can aim
03:02and shoot quickly and accurately.
03:04Quick as a splash, you might say.
03:08Spray ink in human form, then swim through it as a squid.
03:12This is really the key finding of our research into Inklings' movements.
03:25Squid are extremely territorial creatures, and often flaunt their turf, as this footage shows.
03:33This footage came from one of our field research teams, led by Dr. Barry Kuda.
03:38What you're seeing is a turf war.
03:42Eight squid, split into two teams of four, compete to claim the most area within a three-minute period.
03:47They use many different tactics and weapons to claim their turf by covering it in ink.
04:00When the match is over, this cat judges which team covered the most ground.
04:09While standing on your team's ink, you can run or transform into a squid to swim freely.
04:16But if you come into contact with enemy ink, you'll have real trouble moving.
04:21Also, you can take out enemies by shooting ink at them.
04:25You won't win any points this way, but as they burst into a shower of your ink, you can increase
04:31your turf at them.
04:33If you're taken out, you rise from the splashes, back at your team's base, ready to rejoin the action.
04:41That super jump is another unique behavior exhibited by these squid.
04:45When you tap a team-mates icon on the gamepad, you'll jump to their location.
04:50This is perfect for joining team-mates on the front line or supporting any brave inklings who find themselves overwhelmed.
04:59On the other hand, some squid achieve great results with less aggressive behavior, such as staying hidden from others
05:06and concentrating solely on covering ground in their ink.
05:10In this game, it's mind over splatter, that's for sure.
05:18After each battle, you're awarded points based on how much turf you covered.
05:23These points are converted to cash and also count towards increasing your level, which reflects your ability, in a manner
05:29of speaking.
05:31Let's move on to look at the five key turf war locations available from the start.
05:36This is Urchin Underpass.
05:38It's made up of several connected areas, divided by concrete walls.
05:46Remembering the path between areas is vital.
05:52The path leading to the central plaza is a real hotspot, where ink's sure to fly.
05:59Now we're looking at Salt Spray Rig.
06:03It's known for its mixture of high and low points, and teams often compete for control of the high ground.
06:12Neglecting the low ground has its dangers too, as your opponents could sneak in and claim it, turning the tide
06:18of battle.
06:21Next, Black Belly Skate Park.
06:23This arena's large open areas play host to truly fiery battles.
06:32Clinching the platform at the centre seems key to holding the high ground, but it's not going to be easy.
06:39Wall Eye Warehouse.
06:41Use obstacles to your advantage to stay hidden from opponents, then get close and let them have it.
06:49And finally, for now, arrow one on wall. Opponents attack from all angles, so good luck trying to expand your
06:56turf.
07:00Perhaps you've noticed the many different clothing styles, another fascinating area of squid life.
07:08One key finding we cannot stress enough is that, although they seem unremarkable on the surface, squid are extremely fashion
07:16conscious.
07:17They style themselves with headgear, clothes and shoes, which we gather under the term gear.
07:24The key to their fashionability, is that a word, lies in their natural habitat.
07:31This is the centre of all that is vibrant and exciting in this world.
07:35Incopolis.
07:36Young squid come here every day to discover the latest trends in gear and weapons.
07:44In this truly varied ecosystem, each shop is run by a different marine creature.
07:52The shopping area is known as Booyah Base, and it's right next to Incopolis Tower.
07:59The clothing shop, Jelly Fresh, is run by Jalonzo, rather, er, unique in his speech.
08:06He is nevertheless very popular with the young squid.
08:09Or so our coolest intern Ray tells us.
08:12His idea of expressing his personal style is wearing a different t-shirt every day.
08:18Oh, Jalonzo, that is, not Ray.
08:20He's worn the same Splash Mob t-shirt for months.
08:27This is Krusty Sean of the shoe shop, Shrimp Kicks.
08:31He loves shoes so much, he wears four different pairs at the same time.
08:37Annie is in charge of the headgear shop, Cooler Heads.
08:40She's shy, but has plenty of fans.
08:43Strangely, a clownfish named Moe lives in her hair.
08:47Many a young squid has been stung by his sharp tongue.
08:52Finally, Sheldon from Ammo Nights.
08:55He's a real weapons nut and knows everything there is to know about arming yourself to the squiddy teeth.
09:01A warning, however.
09:02Our intern, Marina, tells us that the shopkeepers turn away uncool customers.
09:07Increasing your level seems to be the way to convince them you're cool.
09:11Only then will they offer you better weapons and gear.
09:19There are three main weapon types.
09:22The shooter type, with rapid fire ink.
09:25The long distance charger.
09:28And the roller, for squashing opponents and spreading ink.
09:33I will now introduce you to some of the signature weapons of each type.
09:38First, the splatter shot, which is a popular choice for new players.
09:43You can quickly fire ink by holding down the trigger.
09:46So covering a lot of nearby ground is easy.
09:49And it's useful in a showdown, too, as long as you line up your shot before firing.
09:57Another weapon in this category is the Aerospray MG.
10:01It only has a short range, but if you can get close enough you can take down an opponent in
10:06the blink of an eye.
10:10As the jet squalcher has the longest range in its class, taking out distant enemies is like shooting fish in
10:17a barrel.
10:19Now, the blaster.
10:21This one's special, because its shots actually burst in mid-air.
10:25You can take down foes by catching them in the blast, or by splatting them directly.
10:32Moving on to the splat charger now.
10:34As you might expect, you charge up an ink shot, then let it all out at once in a powerful
10:40blast.
10:40Weapons like this are perfect for creating ink paths along the ground and up walls.
10:46Or sticking it to far off enemies who wander into your crosshairs.
10:54Another charger weapon is the Elita 3K.
10:57It has a long charge time, but a long range, too, so it's actually rather well balanced.
11:09The splatter scope is equipped with a scope.
11:12This weapon's so accurate, it'll shoot the barnacles off a boat at 500 yards.
11:22And the splat roller.
11:25It's great for charging forward and covering the ground as you go, and you can even squish any opponents in
11:30your way.
11:33When you shake the roller, ink flies off it, so you can even attack foes who are standing back a
11:38little.
11:40Here's the dynamo roller.
11:41It's heavy, which means it's slow to move.
11:44But it spreads so much ink when you shake it, that it can deflect incoming fire.
11:55These are all main weapons.
11:57But there are sub-weapons and special weapons, too.
12:01You equip weapons in sets of one main, one sub, and one special weapon.
12:06So it's vital to select the weapon set that suits your play style and the mat at hand.
12:13Sub-weapons consume a lot of ink with each shot, but each one uses a different amount.
12:18When your ink tank lights up, your sub-weapon is ready to go.
12:23Support your team mates and trick your opponents with these crafty sub-weapons.
12:31The suction bomb.
12:33A tricky fellow that latches onto walls and surfaces, then detonates.
12:40Now, the burst bomb, which explodes on impact.
12:44It's less powerful than the rest, but these bombs can be thrown repeatedly without consuming too much ink.
12:54The point sensor lets your team mates know about any foes in the vicinity.
12:59Perfect for spotting any foolhardy opponents who rush into your turf.
13:06This weapon is a devious sort, the ink mine.
13:09It's invisible when placed in your team's ink, and detonates when a foe approaches.
13:18Set one of these squid beacons, and a team mate can super jump over to it right away.
13:27The disruptor is filled with venomous fluid, which hinders enemy abilities for a short time.
13:36Moving on, special weapons certainly live up to their name.
13:40Cover ground with ink as normal, but when the gauge is full, it's special weapon time.
13:45Many special weapons are very powerful, so you can really cover large sections of ground and take out groups of
13:52enemies.
13:53The ink strike is a powerful weapon with unparalleled rage.
13:58Tap a location on the gamepad to launch a missile there, and watch it explode in a devastating ink tornado.
14:09Pinpoint every enemy's location with the echo locator.
14:12Your teammates will be able to see your opponent's positions too, so there'll be no escape.
14:21The bubbler creates a protective barrier for a short time.
14:27Nearby teammates can also pop in to share the effect.
14:34The kraken strikes fear into every foe.
14:37Transform into an invincible squid with a powerful spin attack.
14:42Main, sub, special.
14:45Every squid enters a turf war armed with a weapon set of those three weapon types.
14:51Mastering them all is key to success.
14:56Outside Booyah Base, players find themselves in the plaza.
15:01Many squid gather here.
15:03They are actually other players arriving from Miiverse, or ones you have encountered in online matches.
15:08This world has its own unique fashion, and inklings love to express their personality through the brands they wear.
15:23We recommend you study other players' gear to help you learn their strategies.
15:28If you see something you like, you can order it for yourself.
15:38Careful examination reveals the presence of an icon on this gear.
15:43This indicates a gear ability, which powers you up when worn.
15:48There are many gear abilities to discover.
15:51For instance, by equipping gear that increases ink efficiency, then firing your main weapon.
15:57Well, as you can see, it consumes a lot less ink than usual.
16:03Other gear abilities might increase your attack, defense, or speed, or even give you unique abilities like ninja, squid, and
16:13stealth jump.
16:16The number of abilities gear offers will differ, of course.
16:20Put simply, the rarer the gear, the higher the gear ability.
16:24An inkling can have up to four gear abilities at once.
16:28However, except the first one, the abilities you will get are randomly selected.

17:41This colorful character is Cutton Cuttlefish.
17:43A big name here in Octo Valley.
17:46Inklings seem to obey his orders to fight against the octopus forces.

17:50In a nutshell, the octopi have stolen the squid's precious Zapfish.
17:55And Cutton Cuttlefish orders its retrieval.
17:58Down here there's no shortage of odd sights.
18:01Take this kettle, for example.
18:03It seems to be connected to the octopus base.
18:09I should say that the octopus forces are officially classed as Octarians, but we'll just refer to them as Octopi.
18:17They're very varied and dangerous, and certainly not to be underestimated.
18:21As in all of nature, there are many obstacles to be overcome.
18:25Use all your skill to recover the Zapfish and emerge victorious.

19:43For instance, this armor increases your resistance to octopus attacks.
19:48There are other helpful items too, like the bubbler and inkzooka.
19:56These strange-looking items are power eggs.
19:59And they're scattered all over.
20:01You can use them to power up your hero suit, so gathering as many power eggs as possible is vital
20:07to survival.
20:15By far the most fascinating item, from the research laboratory's perspective, is the sunken scroll.
20:24There seems to be one hidden in each stage, and we believe they hold the secret to unlocking this world's
20:32mysteries.
20:33If only we could get our hands on them all.
