00:14The ice looks great, like there's a solid inch in there, right?
00:18This is like a super informal track walk.
00:20Today I just want to see the ice.
00:22I can already see it's going to push me flat right now.
00:25Yeah.
00:27We don't get very much time on the track.
00:29It's a race against the clock.
00:32One of the unique things about being a Bobsleigh pilot is you have to have a couple screws loose to
00:37do what we do.
00:43It's an adrenaline rush that I can't describe.
00:49You feel awake.
00:52You feel alive.
00:53Woo!
00:55But for any athlete, it's all about staking your claim at the Olympics.
01:01You think this will take gold for Canada?
01:04One for 14 and another medal for this Canadian team.
01:08De Bruyne wins an Olympic medal.
01:10Now it's a tie between Canada and Germany for the gold medal.
01:14For Canada, all of a sudden it was one of the top Olympic sports.
01:18The most successful sport in all of Canada.
01:22Since 1998, Canada was winning medals at every Olympics.
01:26For Canada in the gold and they do it again.
01:29On the women's side, it's only ever been USA, Germany, and Canada have won all the Olympic medals.
01:33Canada will be won.
01:36Unbelievable.
01:37The best athletes, best drivers, and best equipment.
01:41Truly, the glory days of Canadian bobsled.
01:45Nobody could walk with us.
01:46But then, it just completely fell apart.
01:52Support for BCS is on thinning ice.
01:54Current and former athletes are calling for a change in management, citing bad governance and a toxic culture.
02:01The sport started going downhill.
02:03One of this country's most decorated Olympians, Kaylee Humphries, is to leave Team Canada and compete for the United States.
02:12Canadian Olympic bobsleigh medalist Christine De Bruyne suspended three years for doping violation.
02:18There's not that many positives in the last few years of this organization.
02:22We lost our way a little bit, but things were about to get way worse.
02:27People in Calgary are saying no to the Olympics.
02:30Well over half, 56% of Calgarians saying they're not interested in hosting the 2026 Games.
02:38Dismantling the top of the bobsled track is now underway at Winsport.
02:43Losing that track is a big blow.
02:47It's like we went to sleep and had a nightmare.
02:49Like, it's the worst thing you could possibly imagine.
02:54You know, you don't get funding unless you're getting results.
02:58But it's really hard to get results if you don't have any funding.
03:01It's a bit of a vicious cycle.
03:05Results have been getting worse.
03:10Drop down in the rankings.
03:13And medals bring notoriety to the program.
03:15You get more media attention, sponsors, the money starts rolling in.
03:19And you can use that to generate even more medals.
03:25So we're really trying to push hard for the next two years before the Olympic Games.
03:30Because our athletes, they're all looking for redemption.
03:44You were going to get a decent entrance into 12 regardless, but I like you made a change.
03:49Yeah.
03:49I've been coaching now for 10 years.
03:51I've seen every step in Cynthia's program.
03:54We expect more out of her now.
03:56The Olympics is the pinnacle of sport.
03:59It's what we're all training for.
04:00And I think this is the year that it's going to happen.
04:05Growing up, I started off in shot put and hammer.
04:08Loved it.
04:10Went to the London 2012 Olympic Trials in Calgary.
04:14And completely bombed out.
04:17But then I was fortunate enough to realize that bobsleigh is a second career sport.
04:24Cynthia Apia.
04:26Cynthia Apia.
04:2952-53 track record.
04:32Cynthia Apia.
04:34Cynthia has been our top girl for a while now.
04:38She's had quite a bit of success.
04:40She's been trying to put herself as a podium threat every weekend.
04:44Really making that last push to these Olympics.
04:59And in the lead up to the Olympics, I was like, shoot, I might actually win this.
05:05Little bump and you can see they're weightless for a split.
05:07Oh!
05:08She's over!
05:09But they are over!
05:11Apia and Richardson Wilson crashing.
05:14Inexperience really bit me.
05:16And I finished in eighth place.
05:17And for Apia, her hopes dashed.
05:22I was starting to worry that you were getting a mental block.
05:24Yeah.
05:25You changed.
05:26I did make a change.
05:28She'll be 35 at these next Olympics.
05:30It's time to perform.
05:31This is her window.
05:35Cynthia's got this nuclear weapon.
05:37Go, go, go!
05:38And that's the way she starts in Monobob.
05:41She's bigger and strong.
05:43Bam!
05:44Woo!
05:48Monobob is just the one athlete.
05:53I have a lot of Monobob podiums.
05:55But I'm still itching to get that first two-woman podium.
05:59Come on!
06:03She wants to transition to being not just the Monobob threat.
06:07She wants to be the complete package.
06:25We've got some new rookies coming on the women's side
06:28and want to see who's stepping up to the plate
06:30and, you know, trying to pick who I want on my team
06:32for the season.
06:39That new girl, Skylar, is going to be close.
06:41She should be pretty good at competing.
06:43She's NCAA.
06:44She excites me, yeah.
06:45Let's go, Skylar.
06:49Let's go, Skylar!
07:01Skylar's brand new, have an athlete, competed at University of Arizona.
07:05Good job!
07:06And to see her come out and be up there with the top girls
07:09who've been racing on the World Cup, that's really promising for her.
07:12You literally have pushed the same time I pushed.
07:14I pushed a 59 my first year, you pushed a 60.
07:17So you're like right on track
07:18and the coaches definitely have their eyes on you.
07:20So give yourself a pat on the back.
07:22You did a really amazing job today.
07:23Oh good, it was super exciting.
07:25My nerves are high.
07:26This is still super new to me.
07:28If testing goes well for you, the sky is the limit.
07:31If you come out and you push a massive number,
07:33you are going on to the top team.
07:35It doesn't matter that you're not experienced.
07:36They're going to give you that shot.
07:41Congratulations on the week.
07:42Thanks.
07:43It sounds like Cynthia's already been chatting with you a bit
07:47about like maybe joining her team in the season
07:48and the next two months you can make some big strides
07:51and like be a force like right away in the World Cup.
07:54I hope so, that's the goal.
07:55I think you got a lot of big opportunities in this sport.
07:59Before this.
08:00Come on Skyler.
08:03I competed in track and field.
08:05I was a heptathlete.
08:07I was usually 17th or 18th each year out of the whole US.
08:12And I was going to receive it.
08:14Track and field stopped being my dream.
08:19And that will put her out of the top 10.
08:23I was going to become a high school biology teacher
08:25at a local high school.
08:26But no athlete is fulfilled unless they, you know,
08:30make it to the big show at the Olympics.
08:33Brand new.
08:34Yeah.
08:36Oh, yeah.
08:37Yeah.
08:38It's every athlete's dream.
08:39And so my goal is to qualify for the 2026 Olympics.
08:44I'll just be like the anticipation killing me.
08:50Skyler really just came out of nowhere.
08:51And I think there's a great opportunity to really mold her
08:54into being one of the great ones in our sport.
08:57I'm excited.
08:58I'm really looking forward to it.
09:13Working with Sin was my first time on World Cup.
09:19Sin and I pushed really well together because she's so strong
09:22that she gets the sled moving right away.
09:27Then I have that top end speed to get us going like over the crest.
09:30So we worked really well together.
09:33But we worked like the best of friends
09:36towards the end of the season.
09:38I think tensions were growing.
09:39This is going to affect her downtime here.
09:41Her visor pops open.
09:43Sin and I had a pretty bad crash in Altenburg.
09:45Oh, it's over.
09:48He basically got sucked out.
09:51I tore my hamstring tendon.
09:56Altenburg, it's a difficult track.
09:58It's easy to crash there.
10:01There was a bad crash on the Swiss team
10:03with some really bad injuries.
10:05And our thoughts go out to Sandro's family.
10:09The brakeman ejected and passed out.
10:11But no one caught the sled.
10:13And he was laying lifeless.
10:15So the sled came back and ran him over.
10:19Shattered his hip.
10:21Cut his femoral artery.
10:23He almost died.
10:25So there was some fear in the air.
10:28Cynthia and Leah crashed in training.
10:31The day after, the Swiss kid had his bad accident.
10:36So we were already really scared to crash.
10:40Like, someone almost died.
10:43It took people up.
10:44And so Leah chose not to do the race.
10:47She just said, I'm out.
10:48So Cynthia had to race with Nespair.
10:52You know, something like that,
10:54it can affect your relationship.
10:59We hadn't really talked much after World Champs
11:02until like the first camp.
11:07I kind of went up to her and I was like,
11:08what are you planning to do this season?
11:09Because at this point, I didn't know.
11:13So I said, the fastest brakeman will be in my sled.
11:15And I went, OK, that doesn't sound like you mean me.
11:19Come on, Leah!
11:23It got to a point where after two years of working together,
11:26I wanted to see what else was out there.
11:28Maybe a change was needed for the both of us.
11:32The expectations I have on myself are more than anyone else
11:35put on me, but I'm feeling good mentally and physically.
11:40I'm excited.
11:40I'm ready to go.
11:42Like, race time cannot come soon enough.
11:44I think we're both going to thrive in our new partnerships.
11:58I can just walk our duffels over.
12:00Yeah.
12:01The brakeman has to put their trust in the pilot.
12:04As the pilot's driving down the track,
12:06I swear you can feel the brakeman behind you just wailing you.
12:12In the two-man bobsleigh, the pilot's job
12:14is to take the fastest line down the track
12:17with the least resistance possible.
12:19Let's go!
12:20Come on, Jay!
12:21Good job, bud.
12:23Back push!
12:24The brakeman is all about power.
12:26Here we go.
12:27At the start, they're accelerating the sled.
12:29Go, go, go!
12:30It's a huge advantage if you enter the track
12:32with a high top speed.
12:34The brakeman gets in, holds himself as low as possible,
12:38keep themselves aerodynamic and tight in the sled.
12:41At the end of the run, the brakeman pulls the brake
12:46once you cross the finish line.
12:52It's really hard for a brakeman to push as fast as they can
12:55into this abyss and jump in the sled and put their head down
12:58if they don't trust the pilot they're behind.
13:01It's really important.
13:13All right, you're learning anything stronger?
13:19Lots.
13:20I'm still learning lots ten years later.
13:24The mechanic side of things is huge.
13:26Like, you need equipment running well in order to win a race.
13:30Being a farm girl is probably a little bit helpful in terms
13:33of getting my hands dirty and pulling wrenches.
13:35how often do you put the grease in there you do it a couple times throughout the season but you
13:39don't have to do it every single race or whatever yeah all the girls have been around for a while
13:43so it's like second nature to them so they're they're going through it and I'm like wait what
13:47are you doing all right ready we'll just slide it two three whoa whoa okay oh wait I gotta go
13:56a
13:56little yeah always lift and slide it helps I do feel lost a lot of the time this one will
14:02go on
14:02that side this will go on the other side so this one will go here yeah with Skylar being new
14:08Cynthia
14:08has to explain everything show her the system show her how the sled works and teacher really what is
14:13bobsled wait so this is the front of it yeah this will always be the front longer longer short and
14:20will always point to the back there's a risk of like how's this person going to perform under
14:24pressure these are my shims Skylar came in with some great talent but she hasn't been down the hill
14:48first day sliding nobody knows what's going on there's one month at the start of the season in
14:56Whistler where we train together we test equipment to prepare ourselves to go to the races and it all
15:03culminates in Canadian championships day one you come back and you're like well I remember what I'm
15:10doing our job as coaches is to keep them focused on executing what they can control we just need to
15:18get them in the sled and shake off the rust what makes Whistler scary is the speed that two-story
15:33drop
15:33from the start you're already going like 90 kilometers an hour by the second corner on a track that has
15:4216
15:42most trucks you're not hitting that 90 kilometer range until like halfway down the track and then
15:49going anywhere from 120 to 150 kilometers an hour this is serious like what we do is actually really
16:09dangerous pretty good honestly I didn't have the nervousness that I thought I'd have felt pretty nice
16:15be in the back of the side again okay sin nice line through 10 just ease into this a tiny
16:30bit I'm being
16:31picky here yeah you went in too far and then caught it catch it nice and early but gently
16:45ready for two man tomorrow oh yeah yeah first two men first guy first run down the bobsleigh track is
16:52like nothing else yeah as long as they pull the brakes I know she's gonna be fine she'll be fine
17:01yeah I think so it takes a heavy set of balls to be able to go down Whistler as your
17:23first track
17:27is the most daunting experience all you see is down you can't even see the finish line from the top
17:39back set up all right let's go let's have fun
17:45I've never been down a bobsleigh track so I'm not too nervous I'm a little nervous
17:54we want everybody who wants to do it to get a shot to do it but obviously is not for
18:00everybody and if
18:01it's determined that it's not in your best interest to do this sport then we're gonna thank you for your
18:06time and say see you later so where do these go in the side yeah wherever feels comfortable
18:15here we go skyline let's go skyline when you do it here go skyline!
18:31Bei, fault, look!
18:35Let's go.
19:09Let's go.
19:42Let's go.
19:43Let's go.
19:43Let's go.
19:45Let's go.
19:46Let's go.
19:58Let's go.
20:00Let's go.
20:02Let's go.
20:05Let's go.
20:18Let's go.
20:46Let's go.
21:05Let's go.
21:09Let's go.
21:11Let's go.
21:17Let's go.
21:28Let's go.
21:31Let's go.
21:37Let's go.
21:47Let's go.
21:56Let's go.
21:59Let's go.
22:01Let's go.
22:10Let's go.
22:11Let's go.
22:12Let's go.
22:39Let's go.
22:46Let's go.
23:02Let's go.
23:11Let's go.
23:15Let's go.
23:15Let's go.
23:16Let's go.
23:48Let's go.
23:56Let's go.
23:57Let's go.
24:00Let's go.
24:01Let's go.
24:03It's okay.
24:04I'm already feeling better.
24:06Skylar is surprisingly golden up.
24:09She's doing what a good brakeman does which is you know get your pilot spirits back up when
24:13they're down in the dumps.
24:14One, two, three.
24:16Awesome.
24:18I was definitely a bit shaken up, but I'm still getting used to it, so.
24:22I'm so sorry.
24:24No, no, no, it spooked me in the moment, but I already feel better.
24:27Yeah.
24:28Every run is probably like equivalent to my first run.
24:33Like nervous system shot from the first week.
24:48She's a great driver, guys.
24:49I'm so sorry.
24:50That was awful.
24:52What a drive.
24:53Coming into the season, I'm with a new pilot.
24:55I'm with Mackenzie.
24:56I cranked you out of six.
24:58I wasn't worried.
24:58I like to give fresh slate.
25:00I'm sorry.
25:01That was literally my worst run.
25:03I can't wait.
25:04If that was your worst run, I can't wait.
25:06I love you.
25:06I'm sorry.
25:07It's always interesting to see what teams end up together for Canadian championships.
25:12I'm sorry that I had nervousness.
25:14No, it's okay.
25:16Mackenzie is a good young driver that doesn't always get the fastest start times.
25:20And she's teaming up with Leah Walkenden, who's been one of the top rake women in Canada for the last
25:25few years.
25:26But I know we were worried about four, so I was like, oh, nice.
25:29Leah has been put aside by her usual teammate, Cynthia.
25:34So you've got two girls that have something to prove, and that's really what we're looking for.
25:39That made me mad.
25:40I was like, oh, .
25:41I think it weighs way heavier on the pilot if something bad happens.
25:46We need to succeed as a unit to knock down the other teams.
26:14All right, underway we go.
26:16This is the Bump Slit Championship getting underway.
26:19This is the monoball competition.
26:21One, two, three.
26:27They're loose as heck.
26:29They don't go any tighter.
26:32It's basically an inter-squad game.
26:34See where the team stacks up against each other.
26:38Our top ranked.
26:39One, two, three.
26:43Canadian Championships is super important.
26:44It can set up your whole season.
26:46It can determine whether or not you're going to the World Cup.
26:48Or if it's determined that, you know, this sport isn't for you, then, yeah, you're going to get cut.
26:56Even though we're all competing for Team Canada, we're also directly competing against each other.
27:00And so you always want to be the top of your game.
27:04If you don't beat your own teammates, you don't get to go compete against the rest of the world at
27:10the highest level.
27:10You only have a very small window of opportunity to achieve big things in this sport.
27:17But it's the opportunity, right?
27:19And pressure is a privilege.
27:21It's a shot to go do it.
27:23Are we doing sin racing?
27:24Sorry, not today.
27:28They're nervous.
27:29And they should be.
27:31For them, it's a dress rehearsal for the season.
27:34Like in the second run, you could have just held it a little longer.
27:37I mean, it was probably this much off from perfect.
27:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:42I didn't have as many points last year, so I'm, I guess, a little bit on the lower rank side.
27:49My goal is to compete in both the two-woman event and the monobob event, and ideally be a medal
27:54threat in both.
27:58Cynthia and I, we've had a really interesting relationship over the last decade,
28:01because we've constantly been put against one another.
28:12It's clear.
28:13So far?
28:14You getting it?
28:14Yeah.
28:15Control copies were clear from Bob's start through to men's, where the barricade is set and secure for sliding from
28:20above.
28:21Outrun is clear. Track is clear.
28:23Copy that control.
28:25Okay, here we go.
28:26We're at five minutes to start. Track is clear for Cynthia Appiah. Track is clear.
28:33Here we go, Cynthia.
28:39Come on, Cynthia. Let's go.
28:41Come on.
28:45Come on.
28:46Come on.
28:48Come on.
28:52Cynthia Appiah is starting with a five, four, six.
28:55Cynthia's so strong in the monobob, she should do well.
29:02Exiting quarter seven, and that's known as there's loop 32, five, four, three there.
29:08Reasonable.
29:09A 132.5 speed.
29:1497.7 finish.
29:28Not my best run.
29:29I messed up the corporate corners.
29:37Coming into the race, I feel like I've been driving really well the last two weeks.
29:41And so I have the expectation of myself to win, but you've got to really enter into that process and
29:47just be present in the moment.
29:49Track is clear for Melissa Locos from Bob's start.
30:07I typically perform better when I'm having a good time.
30:11I sing in my helmet.
30:13People probably, I hope, don't hear me, but...
30:16Here we go, Mel!
30:18Here we go, Mel!
30:19Go, Mel!
30:20Go, go, go, go!
30:36pretty much textbook
30:45i have one of the greatest jobs in the world so i should have fun doing it right
30:50nice start mel thanks let's be honest we're professional tobogganers like my job is fun
31:00it's disappointing but you just you know lick your wounds and move on to the next run
31:09but does the first seat time still count
31:12yeah it's a combine time yeah oh come on both of them put together
31:16it's not just like best time no they don't choose your best for both parts of mine
31:21oh i didn't know that i didn't know that either i thought it was the best one
31:25track is clear for cynthia and apia from both start
31:30i want to win i want cynthia to come second
31:34you know
31:42start there 5.70

38:04All right, you can hop out.
38:07Nice run.
38:08All right.
38:09It was your first race, all good.
38:12Stay in those angles, really hit the sled hard, dig it out.
38:16Told Skyler to be long and strong in these first 10 meters,
38:19because it's a very fast start.
38:21All right.
38:22Yeah, good job.
38:26The track is clear for a muscle.
38:32Can you see my mouth?
38:35Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
38:40A little bit of a smash hit on the exit.
38:43That was awkwardly.
38:58I'm with Mackenzie.
38:59She's kind of at the bottom of the ranks.
39:01So we're coming into the race with a little bit of an underdog mentality.
39:05Leah's pushed with Cynthia in the past and kind of got a chip on her shoulder.
39:13I feel a lot of pressure to get her right in the race.
39:16And she can show everyone how good she drives.
39:22But I was shocked when we crossed the finish line in first.
39:28I was like, are you serious?
39:31Are you serious?
39:32Woo!
39:33This is great.
39:35This is great.
39:36This is great.
39:37The money.
39:39I'm so proud of you.
39:44The track is clear for Cynthia Appian and Skylar Sieben from the box start.
39:48She's being pushed aside and Skylar's pushed in.
39:53Let's go, guys.
39:54Let's go, Ted.
39:55Big push, ladies.

40:15Better second run.
40:165, 2, 8, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 6, 7.

40:53Up here, Johnson in the lead for the month, 49-7-3.
40:56We're down to the final two slits, year 40, number two.
41:01Skyler, we've got something dynamic going on.
41:04The track is clear for Mackenzie Stewart and Leah Walkenet from Bobstar.
41:07I looked at her and I was like, let's just have our day.
41:11Let's go, ladies.
41:13It's ours to lose, but it's not ours to lose because no one expects us to win.
41:266-100 is back from first.
41:325-3-9 is the start, 17-2-2 out of corner three.
41:36A good solid three tenths and that is increasing.
41:42I think this could be interesting.
41:45Exiting 7 at 3176 now at the increasing.
41:52Going off 4-10 to the second top 141 kilometers an hour.
42:01Mackenzie Stewart and Leah Walkenet will take first place at the 0-49-4-3.
42:10That was really good.
42:11I'm so happy for you guys.
42:17Good job, you're so happy for you guys.
42:19Good job, you're so happy for you guys.
42:20Good job, you're so happy for you guys.
42:21Good job, Daisy. I love you.
42:23Good job, Daisy. I love you.
42:23And for you.
42:29I just meant so much that Mack got to show how good of a driver she is.
42:34Just to be honest, Leah wants to show Cynthia that she made the wrong choice.
42:38These girls have pride and Leah kind of came out and stomped on it today, which is great to see.
42:44I don't think anybody's upset when something like that happens, you know what I mean?
42:47It's a good story.
42:48Except for Cynthia.
42:50Maybe, yeah. Cynthia wants to see her new break when doing good, but Cynthia has to be patient.
42:55In second place with a combined time of 1-49-73, Skylar Sieben and Cynthia Appiah.
43:05I'm kind of like hedging my bets that Skylar and I are the missing piece to getting me on that
43:10two-woman podium.
43:12This is the year that it's going to happen.
43:14And in first place, with a combined time of 1-49-43, gold medalist Leah Walkadon and Mackenzie Stewart.
43:30Mack helped me, I'm going to cry, sorry, um, refine my love of ball setting.
43:37Um, I had a really tough last few years, and I think you succeed when you're happy.
43:48We have this carrot called the Olympic Games, and people will go through quite a bit to be an Olympian.
43:56Good job.
43:57Woo!
44:07Good job.
44:07Good job.
44:08Good job.
44:09Good job.
44:09Good job.
