00:30What you'll quickly learn is that this isn't a time about saving the world.
00:33It's one about just seeing if you can survive the next couple of days.
00:37We decided to create enemies that you can't really take care of yourself.
00:41So you need your friend to be there with your boss on your side.
00:45If you're trying to solo the levels or not cooperate with your friends, you will not survive.
00:52Every single design decision that's gone into making Vermintide has been bounced against the cooperative aspect.
00:56We want to make sure we're only rewarding cooperative play and punishing any style of play that isn't cooperative.
01:02We found that it was really important that you could drop in and drop out of the game at any
01:06time.
01:06So you don't feel the pressure while you're jumping into the game.
01:09Allowing players to join sessions in progress or allowing bots to take over from missing players.
01:13This means you can play the game alone with bots if you prefer.
01:16But we always recommend playing with friends as that's where the game is really the most fun.
01:19It's such a privilege to be working with just a well-developed and rich lore and all of these races
01:27and all these characters and weapons.
01:29And there's so much to take from.
01:31My favorite hero is the Bright Wizard.
01:32She's a crazy old lady obsessed with fire magic.
01:35Take the Skaven as an example.
01:37If we have an idea for an enemy type that we want to do, there's always that life.
01:42There is this archetype already in the armies and it's been such a privilege to have all of that deep
01:48wealth to take from.
01:49The Skaven are really like sneaky, menacing, conniving rat men that live underneath the whole planet.
01:55They've been really fun to work with since they have this sort of backstabbing mentality.
02:01And also they're a really like cowardly race.
02:03If you come up into a lone Skaven, we have the system that they will actually try to like move
02:09away and cower away.
02:10It's really important for us to have, make sure that we portray them as human beings and not just some
02:16monster race.
02:17In order to build a co-op game where you would never truly feel safe, we've built systems allowing the
02:22Skaven to traverse the levels of ways that even human players can't do.
02:25We looked into the Skaven lore, we found these pack masters that control the rat ogres.
02:31So we thought, let's take this guy, switch him around a little bit.
02:34He's really sneaky and always like running around in the background.
02:38Featuring a long grabbing claw.
02:40He'll grab onto one of the players and pull them away from his companions.
02:43And if you don't save that character in time, he will actually lift him up and hang him.
02:47If you are grabbed by a pack master, you are completely helpless.
02:53On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Rattling Gunner.
02:55And what is more iconic for the Skaven army than the Rattling Gunner?
02:58And what he does, he selects one of the players, starts shooting relentlessly at him.
03:02And if that player does not get uncovered as soon as he can, he's done for it.
03:07He doesn't care about if there's a friend or foe in between him and his target, he will just keep
03:12shooting.
03:12So you can actually use the Rattling Gunner to kill off other Skavens.
03:16What's fun about a game that's so dynamic and changes so much between the levels you play,
03:20is that you'll get some really crazy situations.
03:22In Vermatide we have an incredibly detailed hit detection system that allows us to detect where on the body you're
03:27hitting the enemies.
03:28This lets us do crazy decapitations like taking off heads, various limbs.
03:32We can even chop off the tails actually of the Skaven, which is something that is really cool.
03:38Vermatide is a visceral game.
03:39When using a two-handed sword, you expect certain results.
03:42This goes for every weapon in the game, whether you're using fire magic or a ranged weapon.
03:46We want enemies to die in the appropriate way.
03:50You can actually kill the pigs in Vermatide.
03:52In Vermatide, what you see is what you get.
03:55If you hit an enemy with an axe, you'll be chopping it apart and hitting it with a big hammer
03:59or send a ragdoll flying away into the distance.
04:01We really want every weapon to feel appropriate, and whatever reaction you're getting out of that weapon should feel just
04:07right.
04:07I really like going in with the hammer and the axe, because the axe, it really lets you chop off
04:12the heads, and it really sticks to your opponent.
04:15At Fat Shark, we've had a long-term connection with Warhammer, and we've always wanted to make a game like
04:19this.
04:20So, even if it sounds cliche, this really is a dream come true.
04:24Up there!
