00:16Age of Charlemagne is the brand new campaign pack for Total.
00:19Focusing on the great general himself, the father of Europe Charlemagne,
00:23who was founder of the Holy Roman Empire.
00:26It covers Western Europe and features 8 playable factions, all new unit rosters, all new building trees, all new tech
00:31trees
00:32We should have lots of beautiful artwork in there as well, it is a fantastic campaign pack that's out there
00:37With the themes of Attila being so focused on the death and destruction and Attila the Hun and all that
00:44We've been moving forward to our campaign pack sort of representing the rebirth of the world if you will
00:49So The Last Roman is all about the last chance of the Roman to recapture the old empire
00:53And now Age of Charlemagne is when the medieval nations are being born
00:56You're starting to see nations like England and France and Germany start to emerge
01:01And new great kings taking the nations forward
01:05To show this progression each playable faction has a kingdom form an event it can have
01:09So for example if the kingdom of Mercia takes all the regions of England it can then transform into the
01:13kingdom of England
01:14And it gets a brand new effect bundle and a new name on the campaign
01:17And this is true of every faction
01:20Charlemagne even gets two where you can go from the kingdom of Charlemagne to the kingdom of Franks
01:23And then to Holomagne's empire
01:29When it came to the map boundaries we looked at the full extent of Charlemagne's empire
01:38And possibly if he wanted to go further then areas of the map where he could have gone
01:46So for example we included Britain and Ireland which he never historically went to conquer but
01:55They were involved in the whole Charlemagne world so we included them as well
01:59We didn't include Africa because it's not really a massive part of the Charlemagne story
02:04France is the centre of the Charlemagne map so we wanted to make France the right size
02:09And everything else around it had to fit in with that
02:12And I think for the scale of the Charlemagne map we spent quite a long time making sure that it
02:19was right
02:19And that it was large enough to feel good
02:22Because it's the main focus we wanted to feel really good with moving armies around France
02:27Moving armies in and out of Italy and stuff
02:29So we chose the scale because we got the biggest map for the right scale we could get
02:38I did a couple of different things on Charlemagne
02:45One of the biggest ones was the new victory conditions and objectives
02:49So for main game Attila we had a system
02:53Which was kind of based around a series of historical events the birth of Attila
02:57And the arrival of the Huns and so on and so forth
03:00Which worked really well for that but it didn't
03:02It didn't really have any relevance in the period which our game was set
03:05So we tried to think about a way to
03:08To kind of make victory objectives that were a bit more flexible and cater to the player's play style a
03:13little bit more
03:14And allowed them to achieve a victory in a way that they hadn't previously been able to in a Total
03:18War game
03:18So basically all you need to do to win is to earn a certain number of Imperium points that will
03:24take you up to a certain number of Imperium
03:25So 5 Imperium level 5 for a short victory and Imperium level 7 for a longer victory
03:32And the way that you earn Imperium had been a little bit
03:35A little bit tucked away in the base game
03:39So we kind of brought that to the surface a little bit more
03:42We put it on buildings, we put it on technologies
03:47And you also gained it by conquering regions
03:49So basically what this meant was that you had three different paths to gaining Imperium
03:56And you didn't even need to actually conquer a settlement if you didn't want to
03:59You can actually win the game just by building buildings that give you Imperium and researching techs that give you
04:02Imperium
04:04So we thought that that kind of allowed players to pursue very different play styles and still get that reward
04:09of having a victory
04:14So war weariness is a new feature in Age of Charlemagne
04:17It's essentially kind of representing that your people eventually will grow tired of war
04:23So you can't sustain war forever your people and your troops will eventually grow tired
04:28You'll start taking penalties things like lower unit morale
04:32Public order penalties and even if it gets really bad the loyalty of your generals will begin to drop
04:38So there's a number of ways that you can kind of counteract war eeriness
04:42Obviously if you have a sustained period of peace that'll start bringing it down rather rapidly
04:48Making peace deals with kind of various enemies if you're at war with multiple people will give you like a
04:54big drop
04:56Also you can do things like bring all of your troops home that'll help if you're in kind of a
05:01really dire situation
05:03Yeah, so we've got a lot of new unique story events in Charlemagne more than we've ever done before
05:09They're kind of based on history, so if you're playing as the vikings for instance, you're going to see
05:14yourself kind of going to england to raid some villages maybe ultimately ending in the danelaw
05:20They're quite influential these events more than ever before
05:24You can see things like regions changing hands and borders changing things like that, so
05:29So Charlemagne has some pretty cool event chains
05:32You'll start off with your brother carloman dying at some point
05:35And that's kind of going to kick everything off then you're going to be deciding how you want to go
05:40about
05:40Maybe taking over carloman's lands or maybe doing something else
05:45Ultimately you're going to end up towards the end of your campaign maybe trying to become holy roman emperor
05:51You'll be having a lot of interactions with the pope as Charlemagne did throughout his lifetime
05:55So the pope's going to play a large part of Charlemagne's story chain
05:58What do you think is campaign-wide chains?
06:03Campaign-wide chains is personality traits we redesigned the personality trait system
06:09and we tried to make to give players extra feedback regarding the personality traits
06:16Campaign-wide chains is wise
06:20We tried to imitate a little bit the medieval diplomacy
06:25So marriages became more important in Charlemagne
06:30The AI will offer marriages more often
06:34Marriages will give a huge diplomatic boost
06:37But divorcing someone will give a huge diplomatic penalty as well
06:42Also the AI will never raise settlements
06:46It will tend to occupy settlements rather than sack or loot them
06:51And players from the original campaign will find some differences
06:55Regarding how the AI treats sieges
07:00Meaning that the AI will tend not to assault settlements
07:03And will tend not to sally out
07:07Basically we wanted sieges to last longer in Charlemagne
07:13So in Charlemagne we have two basic personalities
07:15One offensive and one defensive
07:16And upon them sits the personality traits
07:20The personality traits exist in the main campaign as well
07:25We try to make them more interactive
07:29For example we have a trait called the loyal trait
07:33Which means that an AI which is loyal will be very hard to gain as an ally
07:39But once you manage to do that
07:41Then it will be very faithful to you
07:45And it will set as a high priority to help you if you are in war
07:50Since in order for traits to become more interactive
07:53They became more complicated as well
07:55In order to counter that
07:57We have added extra feedback
07:59So now when the player hovers over the diplomacy screen
08:02And he hovers over the personality trait
08:04He will see the traditional description
08:06But he will also see in green and red text
08:09Some gaming description of what that trait does in game terms
08:14So if you hover over the loyal you will see
08:16He's very hard to gain as an ally
08:18But if you do he will help you a lot
08:26Thinking about Charlemagne
08:28I mean it was the early medieval period
08:31So we thought we would do something like really kind of hardcore medieval style
08:36So we looked at a few of our past games
08:42And we looked at which unit icons have been most successful
08:46So we thought that the best icons that we've done recently are probably Shogun 2
08:51So we looked at what's really good about them is that they really look in period
08:57And they also are really readable
09:01You know with flat colors and outlines and things
09:04So we looked at what the possibilities we could do in an early medieval style
09:08So I looked at a lot of parchments
09:13Ancient texts like you know old Bibles and illustrated Bibles
09:17And Book of Kells and all that kind of stuff
09:20And we found a few nice pieces in a very similar style that we thought this would work
09:27So we then chose that as a style
09:30But it wasn't entirely straightforward because
09:32Just like the unit models in game
09:35The unit cards are constructed from components
09:38So not only did we have to define the style of it
09:41We also had to create a system where we could in Photoshop
09:49Decide what all the different components are
09:51So we've got torsos, heads, weapons, armor, etc
09:55And then we had to write some scripts to read in the unit database into Photoshop
10:02And then for Photoshop to automatically construct all of the unit cards based on all the components
10:13Alongside the release of Age of Charlemagne we've done a brand new update to the grand campaign
10:16Which has introduced the White Huns as a playable faction
10:19These are situated in the east near the borders of the Sassanids
10:22And have lots of lovely bonuses for beating up the Sassanids and other eastern factions
10:26They've got a brand new unit roster and all new stuff to do with them as well
10:34And yeah the hardest campaign in Charlemagne would be
10:38Legendary difficulty, playing as Westphalia
10:40Have to declare one every faction
10:42You can't liberate other factions either
10:44You must take and control every region you conquer
10:47Try and win that
10:48That's good, that's good
11:10всем
11:16Something's better
