Laws allowing most Tasmanian renters to keep their pets came into effect today. After passing the parliament last year. The state government says it has struck the right balance, but tenants' advocates say protections for renters should go further.

00:55Landlords can still refuse a pet on reasonable grounds, including genuine concerns about property damage, nuisance or safety.
