00:00Oh my god, I'm so embarrassed.
00:02Oh wow.
00:02For some reason, his thing just keeps dropping.
00:06It's causing their family a lot of distress.
00:08He has no range of motion now.
00:10His elbow just grinds.
00:12Brought him in today because he's limping.
00:14Like, look at this one.
00:15No problem.
00:16This one, if we try to flex it like that, that's the best I can do.
00:21We have an emergency coming in.
00:23Benji's howling, pain.
00:25Oof, yeah, that's an ouchy bladder.
00:27He needs to be unblocked, otherwise he's not going to live.
00:29I hope I don't have to say goodbye to him.
00:31Hey, no, buddy, I'm sorry.
00:35Across the country...
00:37Be nice.
00:38Indigenous vets are using their knowledge and skills...
00:42To help the animals we love stay happy and healthy.
00:56Are you making biscuits for all of us?
01:00Dr. Allison, your next appointment is here.
01:04Oh boy.
01:08This is how he sits with me everywhere.
01:12Today I brought in my 13-year-old senior dog, Archie.
01:16He is a cross between a poodle and a terrier.
01:20Archie, let's go.
01:21I brought in Archie to see Dr. Allison because we've noticed more of a decline in his health.
01:28I've had Archie since he's been eight weeks old.
01:32Up.
01:32There you go, buddy.
01:34He loves to be cuddled constantly.
01:37And he just loves to be around people.
01:41Hello, guys.
01:43Um, I hear Archie's not doing super great.
01:47I think he's got a sore throat because as soon as he barks, he coughs, right?
01:51Because it's like it's irritated or something.
01:53And he had really bad panting.
01:56He does have a small heart murmur that he's had for about the last three years.
02:00So we just really wanted to get him checked out to see if there was more quality of life
02:04that we could give him instead of being in distress.
02:07I just feel like, I don't know, he's just...
02:11He's just not himself.
02:12No, no.
02:13This is a perfect example of why it's really important to bring pets in for an annual wellness exam.
02:20Archie has a history of heart disease.
02:22He's getting a little bit older.
02:23It could be if there's something going on.
02:25So it's important to get it checked out right away.
02:28I'll just have a listen to him here.
02:35So I'm trying to pay special attention to his heart and lungs
02:39to just see how they may have changed since we last saw him.
02:45Excellent.
02:46His lungs are sounding good.
02:48But with his heart murmur.
02:50When you were here in June, we graded it as a grade two murmur.
02:55I'm going to put it at a three or four today.
02:59Previously, we could just hear the murmur in one spot on his chest.
03:02And now I'm able to hear it no matter where I put my stethoscope on his chest.
03:07So it's a little bit worse.
03:09Okay.
03:10I know.
03:11I'm sorry.
03:12It's okay.
03:13I know.
03:14It...
03:16I know.
03:17It's tough.
03:18I know.
03:19He is my best friend.
03:22Yeah.
03:24It just means it's a little bit more turbulent.
03:27It doesn't mean that his heart has gotten twice as bad as it was in June.
03:32So we'll do a physical exam.
03:33We'll just see if there's anything else that's popping up that looks unusual.
03:37And then we can kind of chat about what our options are, okay?
03:39And then we'll find the best one for him.
03:41Yeah.
03:42Okay.
03:42Okay.
03:43Does that sound like an okay plan?
03:44Okay.
03:45Heart disease can be really scary.
03:47But there are things that, as veterinarians, we can help manage.
03:52Good boy, Archie.
03:53What a good boy.
03:55I want to have a feel of his throat.
03:57Good job, buddy.
03:58Good boy.
04:00Good boy.
04:03Good boy.
04:06Good boy.
04:08Good boy.
04:14It's comfort.
04:15Making sure that that pet is still getting joy out of life.
04:20They're not in pain.
04:21They're not suffering.
04:23We know that he has heart disease.
04:25And the heart can sometimes push up on the windpipe and cause some irritation.
04:29We could try adding on an additional heart medication
04:33and seeing does it help his cough feel better,
04:35does he get a little bit more energy.
04:37That makes total sense what you just explained to me.
04:40My fingers are crossed that Archie feels better with the medication
04:43and that he goes back to being his bright usual self
04:46and we give him some more quality time with Leah.
04:49Hey, hey, that wasn't the worst.
04:51You did great.
04:53Archie's improved my life significantly.
04:55Even when I'm not well, he's there for me.
04:57So I feel like I could be there for him
05:00when he's not well during these times.
05:02Appreciate it.
05:03Yeah, of course.
05:04Thanks for coming in, guys.
05:06No worries. Take care.
05:08He's like, don't you have snacks for me?
05:20Tonight, I am on call and we have an emergency coming in.
05:25Hey, come on in.
05:27How are you doing?
05:28I'm all...
05:28You're all right.
05:29This little...
05:30Stressful night.
05:31Come on.
05:33Hey, orange cat.
05:35Let's have a look at you.
05:36My cat's name is Benji.
05:38He has just been acting weird for the past couple days,
05:42kind of lethargic,
05:43and tonight he was howling in pain.
05:46I can see from Benji's file history of urinary issues,
05:50it seems like going to the litter box frequently
05:53with no urine being produced.
05:54Is that kind of the gist of it?
05:56Yeah.
05:58I know.
06:00So you haven't seen him produce any urine?
06:02Like, there's no tiny spots in the litter box or anything?
06:05Mm-hmm.
06:07Benji the cat is presented for straining in the litter box,
06:11vocalizing,
06:12so that tells me that it's most likely a blocked cat situation.
06:16Meow.
06:18It's extremely important that with blocked cats,
06:21they come in on an emergency basis,
06:23and we have to unblock them.
06:26Yeah.
06:26Oof, yeah, that's an ouchy bladder.
06:30I know, buddy.
06:32Benji's bladder was this big,
06:33I could feel it right away.
06:35It was hard, it was painful.
06:37Meow.
06:37I'm sorry.
06:39Let's see if I can get anything out
06:41when I press on his bladder a little bit.
06:44Okay.
06:45I am.
06:47You're okay.
06:48My cat means everything.
06:50I never used to be a huge cat person,
06:52and after we got him,
06:53it's just been a whole different experience having him.
06:57He's fun to have around,
06:59always lays by your side.
07:01Okay, dude.
07:02I love the boy to death.
07:03Meow.
07:04I would do anything for him.
07:06Yeah.
07:08Yeah, so he's blocked.
07:11Not great news for Benji.
07:14Not being able to urinate isn't compatible with life.
07:17If you can't urinate,
07:19you're going to die.
07:24We need to help him somehow.
07:26When they have a big bladder like that,
07:28we put in a urinary catheter,
07:30try to break up the blockage.
07:32Honestly, sometimes we can't.
07:35We might not be able to unblock a cat
07:37if they have a lot of scar tissue in that region
07:39from being blocked multiple times,
07:41or if there's a really big, nasty stone
07:44or something in the way that we just can't get through.
07:47Meow.
07:49Benji had another blockage about six months ago.
07:52Always a fear of having crystals in his urine.
07:56I'm so sorry.
07:58This stuff is tough.
08:01And urinary cats are a hard one.
08:04Yeah.
08:08Quite a lot of anxiety.
08:10I hope I don't have to say goodbye to him
08:12because that means it locks me.
08:27He can't go home like this.
08:29Benji can't urinate.
08:31We're going to do whatever we can to resolve that.
08:34Come on, buddy.
08:36Meow.
08:37He needs to be unblocked.
08:38Otherwise, yeah, he's not going to live.
08:41Blocked cats can get really complicated
08:43if they have a really big, nasty stone in the way
08:46that our catheters just aren't able to go through.
08:49And sometimes, unfortunately, we have to euthanize
08:52because we can't unblock that cat.
08:55Okay.
08:58Hmm.
08:59Let's try something else
09:00because that already feels stiff.
09:05I'm trying different catheters
09:07to try to see which one will unblock.
09:09That's not even going to put water through.
09:12And then I'm putting a syringe full with saline
09:15on the end of my catheter
09:16to press the water against the blockage
09:19to unblock it.
09:22It's pretty serious.
09:23I mean, if we don't unblock him, he's going to die.
09:26Pretty severe.
09:27If they can't get the catheter in,
09:29it's going to be a whole different experience.
09:33And, uh,
09:35might have to look at other options.
09:38I can feel it right there.
09:40Really?
09:41I think so.
09:44Uh-huh.
09:46That was promising.
09:50Aw, yeah.
09:51Yeah, baby.
09:53Here we go.
09:54Work, doc.
09:56Success.
09:57Cat's urinating through the catheter,
09:58but it's urinating.
09:59The block was thick,
10:00and it took, like, a lot of pressure on my syringe
10:02to unblock it,
10:03but we got her.
10:07He's so handsome.
10:08He is very handsome.
10:10It's definitely good that they came in,
10:12saved this cat a lot of pain,
10:15a lot of distress,
10:16and possibly it's life.
10:18I feel like he adds a whole new part of my life.
10:21He's there for when I'm anxious,
10:24having a rough day,
10:25he just crawls up beside you
10:27and just knows how to brighten up your day.
10:29Little nugget.
10:31You can't really ask for a better resolution
10:33to an emergency.
10:34Overall, I'm really happy,
10:36and I think he'll be a lot happier tonight at home.
10:39He's like a big potato.
10:40I'm my boy.
10:41See, he's looking around and stuff.
10:42He's not too bad,
10:43but he's still pretty sleepy.
10:45Hi, dude.
10:46If your cat has a history of urinary stuff,
10:49you really want to be careful about its weight management.
10:52You really want to make sure it's intaking water.
10:54You want to minimize stress
10:56and make sure that you have really good litter box management as well.
10:59Those will all help you prevent urinary issues in your cats.
11:02Give him lots of fluids tomorrow,
11:04lots of water.
11:05Yep, lots of water.
11:06It's a big relief off the shoulders.
11:09I was crying.
11:11Yeah, I was quite scared.
11:12I was scared he was probably going to be the last night with him.
11:16Her being able to come in this late at night,
11:17we're very thankful for it and very happy.
11:22Words can't describe.
11:23Just overall happy to have him back.
11:25Thanks, guys.
11:26We'll see you later.
11:26Thank you so much.
11:27Take care.
11:28Come on, Benji.
11:29Come on.
11:41Okay, Walt, this way.
11:43My dog is old.
11:47He's what you call a silver lab,
11:49meaning he has the gray in his coloring,
11:52and he's six years old.
11:54Come.
11:54He is just so happy all the time.
11:59He's very spoiled.
12:03Mr. Bolt, we're ready for you.
12:06And we brought him in today
12:08because he's limping on his left front.
12:11The little bump that he has on his paw,
12:14where is that?
12:16We live on a farm,
12:17and there's thistle and rose bushes,
12:22and I'm thinking that he just got
12:25one that's sticking straight up.
12:27Just like that little red spot there?
12:30Yes.
12:30It's red and swollen.
12:33Okay.
12:33Okay, come on, Bolt.
12:34Let's go through the back door.
12:35Come on.
12:36But it's always a concern
12:38because of his history
12:40that any time he limps,
12:42it might be something more serious happening.
12:46Bolt.
12:47Have you got it?
12:48Come on.
12:51Bolt's a frequent flyer.
12:52He's over here
12:53because he had elbow surgery
12:55when he was a puppy.
12:56So he comes every month
12:58and he gets some cartrophin injected into him.
13:02Bolt was born with elbow dysplasia.
13:06It's a congenital problem
13:08where a piece of the cartilage breaks off
13:11and ends up floating around in his elbow.
13:15Good boy.
13:17We bring him up every month
13:18and he gets a special shot.
13:20Is it cold?
13:22Eh, you're okay.
13:23To make sure that he continues
13:25to run and play like a regular dog.
13:29All right.
13:29I don't look at this lump on his foot.
13:31Is it on the pad?
13:33It's like...
13:34Oh, right there.
13:34Is it?
13:35That little, like, red spot?
13:37She said,
13:38I'm not sure if that is what's causing it,
13:40but what's causing what?
13:41His limping.
13:43He's limping on...
13:44Oh, he's limping on this leg?
13:46If you watch him,
13:47he's just a little bit.
13:48No, he's limping on this leg
13:49because it's his elbow.
13:50His elbow was just...
13:52She just noticed that.
13:53Crunchy.
13:54Dogs that have elbow dysplasia,
13:56as they age
13:57and repetitive strain happens,
13:59it can very much limit their movement
14:02as they become arthritic.
14:05Like, look at this one.
14:07He can flex it.
14:08No problem.
14:09This one,
14:10if we tried to flex it like that,
14:12that's the best I can do.
14:14Arthritis is bone inflammation
14:16and it's painful.
14:18Oh, his elbow just...
14:21grinds.
14:27Good boy.
14:28He had elbow surgery
14:30when he was a baby
14:31and he has no range of motion now
14:33because it's all sclerotic in there.
14:35He's got arthritis.
14:37He's just sore.
14:38It's tight.
14:39Bolt is here today
14:40because he is limping
14:43and Lynn is concerned
14:45he has a sore in his paw.
14:49Yeah, no, it's your elbow.
14:50Hey, dude.
14:51Yeah.
14:54He prefers his weight on his right.
14:56He wants to offload it a little bit.
14:58That's why he's limping.
14:59But it's a struggle.
15:02Bolt is young
15:03and he's active
15:04and we want him to be able
15:05to enjoy his life.
15:07But the more he does
15:08the more he is going
15:10to further injure himself
15:11and then be in more pain.
15:14Up on the scale, big guy.
15:16Good boy, big kid.
15:1839.6.
15:19Oh, jeez.
15:20Oh, jeez.
15:20Oh, jeez.
15:21Just keep getting bigger and bigger.
15:23He's way too heavy.
15:25He needs to lose weight.
15:27He's overweight.
15:28He should have a nice waist.
15:30He's pretty straight
15:31from chest to back end.
15:34As body fat increases,
15:35so does risk for arthritis.
15:37Well, we already know
15:37he has arthritis.
15:38So we're making it worse
15:40because he's carrying extra weight.
15:41The less weight that he is carrying,
15:45the better it is for those elbows.
15:47Bolt needs to lose 10 to 15 pounds.
15:51You have medication?
15:52I have pain medication for him.
15:54His elbow's sore.
15:56Oh.
15:56He's probably done something
15:58to hurt it or strain it
16:00and cutting food back.
16:03Like half, 50%, gone.
16:06When I tell owners
16:07that their pets need to lose weight,
16:09I feel like I am stabbing them
16:11in the heart because,
16:12oh, you mean the dog's gonna hate me
16:16because I'm not giving him
16:17all the food that he thinks he needs,
16:19but they need to lose weight.
16:21So we'll start with that.
16:22That will make him feel better.
16:24Labs are foodies.
16:25They love to eat anything
16:27that people offer him,
16:29and my husband has a very kind heart.
16:32We'll see you next month.
16:33Okay.
16:34Okay.
16:35Yes.
16:36Your mom loves you.
16:37I know.
16:37Bolt does get a carrot every morning,
16:39and that's supposed to be
16:40his treat for the day,
16:41but I think he maybe has more than one.
16:45Okay, Bolt.
16:46And people who come to my husband's shop
16:48often bring donuts.
16:53But Bolt's happier
16:54when he can bolt around and play, so.
16:58The plan for the diet
16:59is no people food.
17:02He's not going to be a happy dog.
17:15Good boy.
17:17Jake is nine months,
17:19and he's a mini-pinscher.
17:20He can be a cuddle bug when he wants to be,
17:23but Jake's got attitude.
17:26Big attitude.
17:27Oh, my God.
17:29I'm so embarrassed.
17:30For some reason,
17:34his thing just keeps dropping.
17:38He dropped his penis,
17:40and it would not retract for half an hour.
17:44He couldn't move or anything.
17:46I hope that it's okay.
17:48There's no infection or anything.
17:50He's a good boy.
17:53Hi.
17:55Hello, buddy.
17:56I'm Dr. Allison.
17:58I understand that there is some concerns
18:00with his little prep use here.
18:02Yeah, I was told there's a picture.
18:04Let's have a peek at that.
18:06Oh, wow.
18:08I thought since he was fixed
18:10that none of that would happen.
18:14Unfortunately, just because they're fixed,
18:15it doesn't stop them from having erections.
18:18It does make it so that he, like,
18:21can't produce babies.
18:23It's normal to see a little bit
18:25of your dog's penis here and there.
18:27It happens, especially when they're excited.
18:29But in terms of a fully erect penis,
18:33that's very uncommon for male castrated dogs.
18:37And when that happens,
18:39he cannot walk, he cannot move,
18:42I cannot pick him up
18:43because I did it once and he cried.
18:46Okay.
18:47So it's stuck.
18:49It's causing their family a lot of distress.
18:52My concern is that,
18:54is there something wrong
18:55with, like, the skin surrounding it?
18:57If something is stuck under there
18:58or if there's, like, an infection
19:00or something else?
19:01It could be as simple as a little grass seed
19:04that's under there
19:05or, like, a little piece of rock.
19:07Okay, we got the whole team coming in.
19:09Hello.
19:10Hi.
19:11You're doing great.
19:12Here, here, Jake.
19:14Okay, Jake.
19:15Just here.
19:16Come on.
19:17So they actually have a bone in their penis
19:19and it feels intact.
19:21He's not painful about me touching it.
19:23But good news, I'm not feeling anything.
19:26Here, we'll give you a break.
19:27He's like, no, I do not like that.
19:29Sit, Jake.
19:30Sit.
19:32How it starts is the licking.
19:35Okay.
19:37So, is he doing it to himself?
19:41He could be.
19:43He gets heck when he likes.
19:46Okay.
19:48I reprimand him when it happens.
19:51Typically, if you're making a big deal
19:54out of something,
19:55even if you mean it in a negative way,
19:57it can often just be taken as a reward for them.
20:01My gut would say that we're probably talking
20:04about more of a behavioral issue here than not.
20:07This is a behavior that we want to try
20:09and manage with him.
20:12When it does happen,
20:13we're just going to ignore it.
20:15We're not going to worry about it.
20:16So, I say nothing.
20:18Great.
20:19I know.
20:20Unfortunately, with behavior things,
20:21it's going to take time.
20:23Right?
20:24Yeah.
20:24When he has his moment,
20:26don't give them attention.
20:27And he should grow out of it.
20:29So, he just needs to learn.
20:33All dogs are different.
20:35They all have their own quirks.
20:37Okay, Jake.
20:38Okay.
20:39But they're all lovable,
20:40just like Jake.
20:45I think that pets have a really great way
20:48of humbling us.
20:49Come here, Jake.
20:51Everyone's relationship with their pet
20:52and everyone's love with their pet
20:53is a little bit different.
20:55And it's really beautiful to see that.
20:57Do you want to give him a treat?
21:00Yeah, good boy.
21:01To practice medicine in a way
21:04that makes me feel good.
21:06People like to think it's super black and white,
21:07but it's actually very gray.
21:09Can I just have a peek in here?
21:11Good job.
21:12Good job.
21:12There's so many different ways.
21:15You can have some treats.
21:16You don't even have to do anything for them.
21:18You just get to eat them.
21:19You're very sweet.
21:20It's a puzzle that you get to solve every time.
21:23You did it.
21:24Bye-bye.
21:25Yay!
21:28I've been pretty single-minded on being a vet
21:30for my whole life.
21:31Hey there.
21:32We're going to just give her her little popes here.
21:35We'll get you another biscuit, don't you worry.
21:37I really love what I do.
21:38We'll get you.
21:40I'll see you next time.
